Dallas city guide

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and Dallas is no exception. Situated in the northern part of the Lone Star State, its warm hospitality rivals that of its southern half. Catch a basketball game or a superstar performance at the American Airlines Center, take in some quality culture at Dallas Museum of Art, and round things off with dinner at one of many fine steakhouses or renowned seafood restaurants.

Where to stay: Dallas Neighborhoods

Downtown

The Downtown District is where the city pulses with life, its skyline punctured by glassy skyscrapers, booming city businesses, and a few familiar scenes from the Dallas TV series. Take an al fresco lunch in Main Street Garden or settle in with a long drink in the hip Grapevine bar.

Deep Ellum

Located east of the I75, Deep Ellum is Dallas' musical home and since most of the property is ex-industrial, it has a fun wrong-side-of-the-tracks feel. Claiming to be a home for Blues, all musical genres can be heard bellowing from the numerous bars, cafes and shops.

Historic City Center

A few minutes' walk to the west of Downtown sits the historic city center, where you'll find the original 20 streets of Dallas and the famous Red Courthouse. Amazingly preserved, the buildings here give a hyper-real taste of Dallas' Wild West history. Bring your own cowboy/girl dreams to life by picking up boots, hats and BBQ steaks in the period-style stores.

Things to see

Dallas Zoo and Aquarium

Dallas Zoo is a sprawling animal park, where herds of giraffes roam, flamingos flock and, when no one's looking, you can pretend you're in the jungle itself with areas like the Wilds of Africa and the Chimpanzee Forest. For those that prefer a more watery habitat, peer into the shark tunnel at Dallas World Aquarium and you might just come face to face with a Hammerhead.

Arts District

The Arts District exudes high-class refinement, and it has every reason to, boasting the biggest arts scene in the US. Situated between Uptown and Downtown, the best way to get oriented is to follow the 3-mile route through award-winning buildings and sculptures that include the stunning Opera House and Theater.

Dallas Museum of Art and The Sixth Floor Museum

An underdog amongst art museums worldwide, collections at Dallas Museum of Art span early American pieces through Van Gogh and Renoir. Top-notch museums abound in the city, but with JFK and Dallas intimately tied together in history, no visit would be complete without a visit to the somber Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza.

Things to do

The early part of the year sees the annual Cotton Bowl for football fans, while in spring and summer various arts festivals come to the city, including The American Film Festival and The Cinco de Mayo celebration.

The big event of the year has to be the State Fair, held between late September and mid-October. This is the big boy of state fairs and a great Texan tradition, with live music, rides and games, as well as auto and livestock events.

Transport

Until the 1970s, Dallas was a car and train destination, but now there are two commercial airports: Fort-Worth (DFW) and Lovefield (DLF). Both are roughly a 20-minute drive or a pricy taxi ride to the city center. Many hotels and charter companies run shuttle buses to Downtown every half hour and Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) keeps public transport buses and trains cycling between every airport terminal and Downtown.

Accommodation

Dallas caters for all budget sizes, from small cheap motels to full 5-star hotels. The small simple rooms in places like Knights Inn Market Center come in at around $53 per night, while at the luxury end of the scale, you'll find nightly prices north of $400 for the Ritz-Carlton. To go a little more native, try a B&B set in the Historic Center, and stay in the center of an authentic Wild West setting.

Climate

Dallas has a humid, sub-tropical climate, with pleasantly warm temperatures year-round. Spring and autumn have the stormiest weather, while the summer months are clear with temperatures peaking at around 100 degrees Fahrenheit in August. Winter temperatures will dip to the high 40's. The ideal time for visits is late spring or late summer, to avoid driving rain or brutal heat.
