Cheap choice in Memphis

  • Smee414
  • Dec 28, 2011
we chose this hotel to save some money when visiting Memphis. We got what we expected and the hotel can serve the budget traveller's needs. The room was large but needed some work. The elevators up to the rooms are outside, not in the hotel lobby, which is not the safest arrangement. The area around the hotel didn't seem too safe or unsafe, but the elevator/entrance situation was troubling. Breakfast was marginal at best with stale bagels and muffins and coffee. The location is definitely great and is within walking distance to the sights (Beale st, civil rights museum , gus's fried chicken, the Peabody,Gibson retail, etc). Parking was self park and an extra 10 per night. Overall a good choice for a short stay.

The room, service and amenities at this inn was great. the room was very clean, it was easy to control the temperature and the furnishings were in excellent condition. the Continental breakfast was good though there was only a limited selection. i would definitely stay at this inn again and if all the rooms were as good as ours, I would recommend it.

Great, convenient location right off the highway near plenty of restaurants and the mall, in a nice area. Quiet, comfortable room. Only complaint would be the dim lighting due to the fluorescent light bulbs and the loud wall unit for air conditioning/heat.

Checking in was very simple. The girl at the front desk went through the motions but did not go out of her way to be friendly. When we entered the room it smelled badly like mildew or sour laundry. The room was very small and the bed was awful. I really expected more for $200 a night. The "breakfast for 2" was a voucher for the restaurant. I really expected more. There are much nicer hotels much closer to Beale if that is what you are there for.

The good, the bad and the ugly.

  • Snapmike
  • May 9, 2011
The wife and I went for weekend getaway to the birthplace of rock n' roll. The Crown Plaza was a fair hotel. The good part was it's location and shuttle service. It was about 1/2 a mile from Beale St and they had a car that would drop you off and pick you up. Problem is they would only pick up until midnight which is just when Beale St is heating up! You could walk back to the hotel but its risky. The beds were comfortable and the room was clean. The staff was also very friendly. The bad was that the air conditioning did not work properly in room. It got warm in there and the unit was just circulating the room air. The controls didnt work on the unit. I also did not enjoy paying $10 a day to park my rental car in a hotel that, in my opinion, was way over priced. The ugly was the plumbing had a minor malfunction that could have turned very ugly were it not for my quick thinking by turning off the water valve.

The staff was really friendly and helpful. You can't beat the location: in the heart of downtown, right next to the Peabody, just 3 blocks from Beale street. The only issue was there was no ventilation in the bathroom so it would get really hot, and our sinuses got congested during our stay so we wonder if there was a mold issue.

Right when you walk in the courteous staff greets you with a smile and a glass of champagne. The room is a little small but very cozy and extremely comfortable. The small window had a very cute flower box on the outside and the view of the mighty Mississippi river was outstanding. The River Inn of Harbor Town is our new place to stay in Memphis.

We stayed at the Madison during the Beale street music festival. The location was perfect for the event, only a few blocks from Beale itself. We used the hotel's valet service (25$/day) which was safer and cheaper than other parking arrangements in downtown Memphis. The Grill bar located in the lobby was a great environment. It was a nice mini vacation for me. The thing that was really bad was the entrance of the hotel. Its off of a major street and the turn is Terrible. But otherwise it was a pretty decent stay. i would recomment this hotel to others.

Business Trip - stay was quiet and uneventful until the day I was to leave. I requested a 715 wake up call which didn't happen. Woke up at 805 in a panic and barely caught my 920 flight. . . plenty of parking, very close to freeways and airport is 7 mi away, pleasant rooms, have a $10 hot breakfast altho I didn't partake. very competitive at $79 and worth staying - other than the wake up call issue which was quite upsetting.

Staff was very friendly and helpful. Room was neat. AC unit was a little sporadic, but not that bad. Breakfast was great. The only problem wasn't really with the hotel, just the location. Pan handling in Memphis is getting to be an epidemic. If you want to take an evening stroll, or even a walk during the day, you're going to get hit up about every other block. Keep to the trolleys or drive.

The hotel is in a good position to visit Memphis on foot. It has some rooms without windows so, when booking, check that you are selecting a room with a view. In my case, the first room was without windows but as I asked I was moved to a room on 14th floor, with a nice window!

I stayed here while running the St. Jude marathon as it was a great price, near the start/end of the race. I was very impressed with the service I received and the room was great. Bed was very comfortable which is important when you are getting up early the next day to go run! I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a hotel in the area which is clean and friendly!

Interior finishes/paint are a bit jarring, but appear new and in good condition. This is a former medical building of some sort and it smells a bit antiseptic--not necessarily a bad thing, but it is notable. It is well situated near Memphis' major medical centers. It is also convenient via car or an antique streetcar to the downtown area and some other parts of mid-town. It is convenient to Rhodes College. All in all, it was a good, basic, budget urban hotel. We paid about half the cost of the nearby HI-Express and I doubt it would have been functionally any better.

Excellent Conference Hotel

I went to this Hilton for a conference. It was perfect; they had an enormous conference/ballroom area and the perfect presentation technology in place. The hotel staff was extremely friendly and willing to assist in any way they could. They even accommodated my extremely early check-in of 9:00AM. Shuttle is good. Hotel is close to Target and several dining places, so you don't have to rent a car; the shuttle will take you to those locations for dining. It is not that far from downtown or the zoo, using Poplar Rd. Really great experience!!

The initial expereince was horrible. I arrived early after being told I could by an employee. The guy Dave was cut throat and rude on the phone when I called. I drove 12 hours to find out that the hotel was overbooked and i may not have a room. My grandmother funeral was at 1 pm. It suggested that i go to the restroom and clean up because i didnt have an early check in. The guy dave suggested that I let my child sleep on the floor. However kenya & Ladonna did get things worked out and made the rest of my time ok! Without Dave I would give them 4 star rating.

i did'nt expect it to be so nice. the lobby was so gigantic with all the floors of rooms exposed inside ! it's an older hotel but they are trying to bring it up to date and may i say that their doing agood job. they have a restaurant which we ate breakfast buffet only, a little pricey for what the have eat. i would go somewhere else to eat next time. but for the cost of the room i can't complain!

You're one block north of Beale Street and you have Rendevous BBQ in your back alley, it's hard to beat that for the price. For that, the hotel was noisey, they didn't offer continental breakfast and the elevators were slow, but for the price, what do you really expect? If you want all those things and the location, stay at the Peabody across the street for 4 times as much. The hotel staff was very helpful and tourist oriented, you can't say that for other Memphis hotels we've booked. If you are there for a bowl game, the city-run free bus to the Liberty bowl picks up in front of the hotel.

We were not very impressed with our experience at this hotel. We had arranged for a non-smoking, 2 queen beds room, but were disappointed to find they placed us in a smoking room with 2 double beds. The decor was a bit out dated, and the elevator to the parking garage did not work. We expected more for the price we paid for the room. The hotel did have some redeeming factors. It is within walking distance to nearby shops and clubs to enjoy good blues music. The attendant in the hotel club was very knowledgeable and helpful, for new people to the area, on places to go to get the most out of experiencing Memphis.

I and a colleague stayed here for three nights. The rooms are spacious, wifi seemed pretty good for a hotel, and the location was great. Would have liked more equipment in the fitness room (only one treadmill). The common areas are very nice and breakfast was quite good too. I recommend this hotel and would stay here again.

Weekend in Memphis

The hotel staff was friendly and accommodating, rooms were clean, however the lighting in the rooms was not pleasant and the industrial strength flourescent bulbs should be replaced with a residential soft white flourescent to remove the feeling of an interrogation room. There was a family across the hall that were loud...even with the doors to both rooms shut, you could hear them just as if they were in the same room.

I was at the hotel for only one night with a friend. We were visiting the Southern College of Optometry so the location was perfect. The room was clean and cool when we arrived. It also was nice to have a refrigerator and microwave in the room. The beds were very comfortable and we both slept well. Also, the breakfast was very good and there was a good variety.

The trip was an anniversary gift to ourselves. The hotel has a great location near Beale street and plenty of great restaurants. The hotel has been well maintained with customer service being their #1 priority. The staff always greated you with southern hospitality that made you feel like a king or queen. Be careful of the service fee. If you do not want to use the health club, shoe shine and a few other amenities make sure to opt out of the service fee when you register (I would mention $ amount, but that is restricted by [...]). There is a fee for parking a car as well.

This was an excellent trip overall. The atmosphere in the lobby is great with the lobby bar and music. The duck march was also great. I was in town for the Lakers-Grizzlies game and it was great. I really liked that downtown area overall. I did miss In-Room Coffee and the rooms were a bit small. I would highly rate staff at the Peabody, very accomodating.

We stayed at the Union Xpress Inn on New Year's Eve. It is situated off of 240 on Union Ave, a main artery into downtown Memphis. The decor of the rooms reminds me of a Spring Break hotel with tile floors and utilitarian furniture. The best thing about the hotel is the trolley stop one block north on Madison. For $1, you do not need to park downtown for any events. We paid excessive rates due to the holiday, but for $69-79, its a good deal.
