Feel the southern comforts of South Carolina

From the eastern seaboard, South Carolina is the gateway to the Deep South, and you can feel the difference as soon as you cross the border. The air gets hotter and sultrier, the accents slow down, and a wealth of Southern-style comfort food is available at the click of your fingers. South Carolina is most famous for its beautiful coast, but once you travel inland toward the Blue Ridge Mountains, you'll find an intriguing world of hidden small towns, beautiful swampland and untouched wilderness. No matter whether you stick to the beaches, explore the islands off the coast, hit the cities or head into the backcountry, get ready for a memorable journey into the heart of the South.

What to do

Beaches and beyond

Myrtle Beach is the most famous stretch of sand in the Palmetto State, and visitors and locals alike have been flocking there since the area got railroad service in 1900. Today, Myrtle Beach has a definite beach-town vibe, and its laidback atmosphere is great for relaxing by the water, doing a little shopping or enjoying some fresh seafood in one of the many beachfront restaurants.

If you want to get away from the typical beach scene and take in some local history while you're at it, be sure to catch a ferry out to the Gullah Islands. These islands stretch along the coast of South Carolina and were abandoned to newly-freed slaves after the Civil War. Isolated on the islands, the Gullah people developed a distinct language and way of life, and today you can still hear Gullah spoken and try some of the culture's exquisite cuisine.

Do the Charleston

Romantic, elegant Charleston is the oldest city in South Carolina and one of the most beautiful cities in the country. While you're there, slow down your pace and find time to stroll along the city's cobblestone streets, smell the blooming magnolias and observe the beautifully preserved antebellum buildings. The historic Charleston City Market is an especially nice place to spend an afternoon poking around, and once the sun sets, the city really gets going.

Charleston is especially well-known for its food culture, and the city's restaurants are a constantly changing showplace for the area's talented chefs. Seafood and local cuisine are huge, and your dining options range from new takes on traditional Southern to just about every kind of ethnic food imaginable. The neighborhoods around the College of Charleston have many of the best restaurants; Spring and Cannon Streets are especially popular among visitors.

When to visit

South Carolina can be very warm in the summer, so visiting in fall or spring is the best way to take advantage of the region's more temperate seasons. October and April are the most ideal months for exploring this gorgeous state, as both are mild. October can still have some days warm enough to hit the beach, and April is when the local gardens are in full bloom.

Where to stay

South Carolina hotels run the gamut from economical to lavish, and some of the most romantic places to stay are in any of the restored antebellum homes that have been made into hotels.

Myrtle Beach

If you're planning to stay at Myrtle Beach or one of the other popular seaside areas, be sure to book well in advance as hotels can fill up quickly. Sheraton Myrtle Beach Convention Center is situated in the business district of the area, but is still close to the beach and Myrtlewood Golf Club.

Charleston

With so much happening in Charleston, you're never far away from the action. The SpringHill Suites by Marriot Charleston North offers spacious rooms, and is close to South Carolina Aquarium.

South Carolina is one of the most charming states in the country, so whether you stay at the beach or head into the city, you're in for a Southern-style treat.
