Myrtle Beach city guide

More than 14-million tourists flock to the surf and sand of Myrtle Beach every year thanks to both the beauty of its beaches and its affordability for families. Offering a little something for everyone—from waterparks to luxury spas to live theatre—the coastline alone is worth the trip. Cool down with some beach, spa and golf time; get your thrills with a windsurfing or helicopter trip; heat up your nights at sizzling restaurants and even hotter nightclubs; or bond with the family at amusement parks and mini-golf. Free and low-cost activities abound, making Myrtle extra friendly on the wallet. Here's what you can't miss.

Getting there and around

Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) is the only major airport in the area and is located a short 10- to 15-minute drive from the center of town and about half an hour from North Myrtle Beach. Busses also run from a wide array of neighboring states and cities. Once you're in town, getting around is a cinch. Public buses and taxi services run throughout the beach and to many major tourist destinations.

Where to stay

Myrtle Beach is divided into several mini-beaches, each of which has its own personality.

Myrtle Beach proper

Many of the major attractions including Ripley's Aquarium, Myrtle Waves Water Park, the Boardwalk and the entertainment mecca known as Broadway at the Beach are all found here. A great hub for active families and those seeking the nightlife, central Myrtle Beach offers easy access to both the coast and kid-friendly fun.

North Myrtle Beach

The shops and nightlife of Barefoot Landing, the impressive array of golf courses, and the Barefoot Princess Riverboat draw a slightly more adult crowd to the northern portion of the Grand Strand, but there are plenty of families to be found here too since North Myrtle Beach is also home to The Trippo, a 175-foot-long inflatable waterslide.

Surfside Beach and Garden City Beach

Sandwiched between the hustle and bustle of North Myrtle beach and the relaxing vibes of the south, Surfside and Garden City are prime spots for those who want nothing but coastline. Sun, sand and water activities dominate.

Murrell's Inlet

Take in the beauty of nature and sink your teeth into some savory seafood here. On top of being a culinary delight, Murrell's Inlet is also home to the spectacularly lush Brookgreen Gardens and Huntington Beach State Park.

Litchfield Beach and Pawley's Island

Golf courses are available by the truckload here but in between tee times, Litchfield Beach offers a gorgeous retreat from the scurry of Myrtle Beach.

Things to do

Hit the beach!

Miles and miles of coastline is undoubtedly the best attraction, and with it comes opportunities for fishing, jet skiing, boating, water skiing, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, beach volleyball, kayaking, parasailing, and the list goes on. If ocean waves aren't your thing, you can also hop on a river boat cruise to explore the Intercoastal Waterway or get some thrills at Myrtle Waves or Wild Water & Wheels water parks.

Tee off

With nearly 90 premiere golf courses in and around the Myrtle Beach area, golf resorts and packages are abundant. Fan favorites include the Tournament Players Club of Myrtle Beach, which gives all players a taste of a professional-caliber course, True Blue Golf Club located on a former indigo and rice plantation and the budget-friendly Whispering Pines Golf Course which offers significant bang for the buck. There's also plenty for the kids: Myrtle Beach is practically brimming with mini-golf courses, ranging from dinosaur to pirate-themed adventures.

Spend some dough

Shoppers hit the Tanger Factory Outlets to pick up some discounted necessities then head to the more than 100 specialty shops at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach for one-of-a-kind items. With over 100 specialty shops, 15 attractions and 11 nightclubs, Broadway at the Beach also pulls in its share of shopping traffic and provides more than a few ways to cool down in between buying frenzies.

See a show

From magic shows to medieval jousts, there are shows for every age level here. Medieval Times and Pirates Voyage are both hotspots for kid-friendly dinner theater, but children can also peep some seriously impressive performance at the Palace Theatre's Illusions of Magic show. For the older crowd, The Carolina Opry's signature show has been drawing both crowds and press for nearly 30 years. The Alabama Theatre and Carolina Comedy Club are also solid bets.

Get weird

One of the best parts of Myrtle Beach is all of the downright weird attractions for children. The Backstage Mirror Maze at Broadway at the Beach, Magiquest's ethereal scavenger hunt, Pirate Adventures interactive pirate cruise for kids and the live stingray feeding show at Ripley's Aquarium all offer fantastically unique fun you won't find anywhere else. If you're looking for a few more traditional activities, Family Kingdom amusement park and the Broadway Grand Prix go-kart track have you covered.

Events and entertainment

Head down to Plyler Park on the Boardwalk all summer long to catch free, family-friendly entertainment every night of the week. Mondays bring a kids carnival, and every other night, the park hosts free seaside concerts or strolling musicians.

Creativity runs wild throughout the summer. Chapin Park and Valor Park host Art in the Park exhibits on select weekends throughout the year. Everything from jewelry and stained glass to pottery and metalwork are represented.

When the sun goes down, the screens come up in Myrtle Beach public parks. Martin Park in Surfside Beach hosts free outdoor movies every Thursday at 9pm while Valor Park offers screenings on Friday nights.
