Find a relaxing escape on Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Blending traditional Southern hospitality with striking natural scenery and contemporary amenities, South Carolina's Kiawah Island is the perfect destination for escaping the stresses of daily life. Upon arrival, time seems to slow to a serene tempo as you're greeted with beautiful views, relaxing accommodations and warm, welcoming locals. Whether your idea of paradise is golfing, shopping, enjoying the beach or simply relaxing with a glass of wine at a fabulous restaurant, Kiawah Island is a great getaway destination.

Things to see and do

Beaches

Kiawah Island's 10-mile coastline runs from east to west, making any beach on the way worth a stop for picturesque sunrises and romantic sunsets. Since Kiawah Island is a master-planned community, the entire waterfront here is pristine and beautifully maintained. Try visiting different beaches to discover your favorite, and if you're traveling with young kids, be sure to check out The Sandcastle, a family-oriented community center that features swimming pools, a private beach, a playground for children and delicious poolside dining.

Golfing

Home to nine world-class courses designed by a renowned team of experts, Kiawah Island is a premier global destination for golfers. Seven of the island's best courses are part of the prestigious Kiawah Island Golf Resort, a luxurious retreat rated as the top resort in the U.S. by Travel ⁺ Leisure Golf magazine. While golfers of all skill levels are welcome here, beginners can sharpen their skills at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Golf Academy—a state-of-the-art program led by an accomplished golf instructor.

Special events

Community events

Kiawah Island's friendly and active community is one of its biggest draws. From tours and surfing lessons at the island's posh resorts, to promotional events and seasonal food stalls at Freshfields Village, local calendars here are packed with activities all year long.

Farmer's market

In the summer, head to Freshfields Village for the annual farmer's market for some of the best organic produce in the area—scheduling typically runs from June to August. Whether you love fresh seafood or vegetarian fare, this local favorite carries all the ingredients needed to make a tasty meal.

Live music

If you love live music, don't miss Music on the Green, a weekly concert series that takes place outdoors. All you need for a lively night of entertainment is something to sit on; most guests bring chairs and blankets. While the concerts are free for everyone, bring your wallet if you want a bite to eat while you listen. Snacks and drinks are available all night, so you never have to miss a beat if you aren't ready to head back home just yet.

Activities and events

If shopping or listening to live music isn't your style, you'll find plenty of other events to fill up your itinerary. Movies, trunk shows, island hunts and family crafts are just a few highlights from this year's event lineup. Special events do pick up in the summer, but chances are that you'll find the slower winter pace here just as inviting.

Keep in mind that the residents and business owners of Kiawah Island are always coming up with new ideas, and events can change from month to month, and year to year. Be sure to double check the current calendar to find out what special events will be held in the area during your stay.

Getting to Kiawah Island

Although quaint Kiawah Island feels a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of Charleston, it sits just 33 miles away from the city's busy Charleston International Airport (CHS). Since the island is joined to the mainland by a causeway, getting to Kiawah Island hotels by car is easy from the main airport.

Where to stay?

Once you're on the island, you can choose from a variety of accommodations. Kiawah Island Golf Resort's on-site Sanctuary Hotel is an award-winning luxury hideaway with upscale rooms and top-of-the-line amenities. For those on a budget, smaller Kiawah Island hotels and inns are a perfect match. No matter where you stay, the rest of the island is easily accessible with rental cars and bicycles.
