Bed and Breakfast in Center City, PA

  • Michal
  • May 29, 2011
Took my son to Philly for his birthday. The room was clean and well decorated; however, at $250.00 per night, I felt it was over-priced. The room was very small (reminded me of Bed and Breakfast). The location was good (historic district), but had to park in garage two blocks away for $18.00/per 24 hours and drag luggage down the street to hotel. The surfaces in the room were also a little dusty and the side table near the chair was wobbling whenever you tried to put something on it. In addition, the air conditioner was not working very well. There are no real amenities in the room. There was a bottle of water provided but you would have been charged $3.00 extra if you drank it. I brought my own drinks and got ice downstairs (much cheaper). TV only had about 20 channels, so there was very little to watch when we came in for the night. My son spent most of his time on the internet when we were in the room. (cable provided to plug into your laptop). The complimentary breakfast was scanty. You could "upgrade" if you wanted to, but we went out to breakfast at a restaurant instead. I might stay there again due to the convenient location. If you are traveling with children and need more amenities, this might not be the hotel for you.

Cute outside, ok inside, very convenient

My stay was a positive experience. Looked at from the outside, the hotel entrance is a lovely colonial/early American building in an area with lots of similar structures. If you go and like colonial architecture, make sure to wander up Cuthbert St, a little to the north. My room was perfectly functional. The wine bar is excellent. The hotel is very accessible to downtown, Penn, etc. because the Market St. subway is right there. Also, a 5-10 minute ride gets you to 30 ST station and trains to the airport, Jersey, etc. The worst thing: the breakfast coffee was undrinkable. People, please, put some coffee in your coffee!

Penn's View hotel is ideally located in Philadelphia old district. We were able to walk everywhere we wanted, including up to the Philadephia Art Museum, Penn's Landing, the Constitution Center, Reading Terminal Market, and so on. The nice part is that the subway is on the same block as the hotel, and the stop for the tour buses, carriage rides, etc, was only a few blocks up, so very easy to find transportation if needed. Tons of eating places in every direction. The Continental, just up the block, has sidewalk seating, and we ordered one salad for $13 that was large enough for the 2 of us to split. I recommend the Constitution Center, the program on Freedom was excellent and has an nice museum. We were also right near Franklin Fountain, an old fashioned ice cream parlor-excellent! The hotel was nice and accommodating . We had a king size bed which was very comfortable. It is right next to a busy road, but we were facing an alley, so we really didn't hear too much. The bathroom was nice and clean, the only problem was the Jacuzzi tub didn't work on the one night we went to use it, but the hotel adjusted that for us on the bill. They had a large ice water jar ready for when you came in, which was delightful on the days we were there. The continental breakfast was adequate, not quite as large as some hotels, but enough to get you going. My husband would have preferred more meat and choices, but we were both satisfied all in all. We were there for 5 nights, so we got a good feel of the place. I was a little worried our first night, because it was a little noisy, but after that we were fine. I would recommend staying here if you wish to be near the sights. Friendly, courteous staff as well.

A bit of a surprise ...

  • Joe
  • Nov 21, 2010
The hotel was a bit of a surprise. I like older hotels and I have stayed in many simple places without a lot of frills. There was a window taped with cardboard to keep it closed. The bathroom shower dripped constantly and others that stayed there had toilets that did not work plus other basic problems. It was a good location and the people that worked there were nice. But overall it was really a dump.

Not sure how they charge close to $100 a night for this hotel. I've stayed in hostels that were far better than this facility. Everything seemed broken, old, dirty, dilapitated - just an all around unpleasant place. If you don't have very high standards for cleanliness and comfort (bed was horrible) - then it's a good place because of its location. Otherwise, I would never recommend - ever.
