Very Classy Place! We found Parking was Difficult in down town Portland! We were able to park next door and walk through a tunnel to the Benson! They also Valet Park! We arrived a few Hours early....But They let us check in early so we were able to start exploring the area! All the staff was friendly and Helpful. The feeling of History was all over the Place. The room was average size and bathroom was small but worked fine! There were some noises from the street at night but still was fine. The Beds were super comfortable!

Right around the corner from the stadium, tidy rooms, and friendly staff. The good news; no grody carpets. The bad news; no carpets makes for noisy upstairs neighbors.

One of the less expensive hotels in Portland, it's within walking distance of concerts, bars, and the Portland Grill. We were upgraded to a suite for no additional cost because they were filled up, so the value was even better. The next time I find myself in a hotel in Portland for any reason, I'll be staying here again.

A Fantastic Surprise!

  • Been Around the World
  • Mar 26, 2012
I booked this hotel at the last minute for an overnight stay to meet some friends for a birthday gathering. This hotel is perfectly located! The valet parking was a pleasant surprise! All the staff with whom I interacted were wonderfully friendly and professional- from the valet to front desk. I didn't get the room type that I booked, but that was absolutely fine, as I simply needed a place to lay my head for the night! That said, I am clear that I will book this hotel again and again!

Came to Portland for a friend's bachelor party. We wanted to stay somewhere downtown to be close to the bars and clubs, so this hotel was a great fit. The staff was friendly and recommended several places to go. We weren't in hotel for long, basically just needed a place to sleep, but the rooms were nice and the beds were comfortable.

The Heathman in Portland was a very comfortable and welcoming place to stay in downtown Portland. I thought the costs could have been a bit lower, but given the level of amentities it wasn't too over priced.

I was in town for business. The room was small, but nicely appointed. Parking was not great. Valet struggled to find my car stating they thought I was just checking in for dinner in spite of the fact that they helped with the luggage. Overall a very nice place very historical feel.

I was in town on business and needed a centrally located hotel, with easy access to the 5 and 405 freeways. This hotel filled that bill for sure. The staff was very helpful. Upon check in I was handed a list of over 40 different choices for dinner, all within walking distance of the hotel, and informed there was a manger's reception in the lobby from 5:30-6:30. The reception included free beer, wine and appetizers, a great way to finish off a day of business. For dinner, I chose the Matador, great atmosphere, tasty food and a very reasonable price, only a 5minute walk from the hotel. The room was comfortable with a nice new big screen TV, in room coffee maker, microwave, iron and ironing board. The complimentary breakfast was also a good start to the next day, including your standard continental offering as well as eggs and sausage, and of course a handy dandy waffle maker. All in all it was a pleasurable stay and I will be staying here again for my next trip to Portland.

Great location, trying hard for service, still some gaps

  • Sally Richardson
  • Apr 9, 2012
Stayed here for a leisure weekend. The location is great, rooms quite nice, and staff are very attentive -- except that they are really missing the skills of a concierge. Several times I had questions about services or amenities in the local neighborhood, and got incorrect or incomplete information or even "I never heard of that" in response to a request I thought of as common tourist info. They don't seem to have a separate concierge, these questions are just handled by the desk clerks, so my advice to management is, get a trained concierge; or, if you have one, they need to work more hours.

Didn't know our room was directly over a local bar so was a little annoyed about midnite when bar patrons gathered on sidewalk for a smoke and some loud conversation. Second night was better. Best thing about it was 10 minutes to VA hospital. So simple it outweighed any negatives.

Overall Great Experience

  • Lil Miss Picky
  • Mar 12, 2012
The parking lost us from the get go... the original parking for the hotel was an absolute hunt. We ended up at the parking garage at the corner diagnal from our hotel. When checking in the lady helping was a lil rude and tried to charge me more as she said i had more people staying in the room than originally reserved. I had to argue with her and explain i not only reserved for 6 people but I confirmed both thru the online reservation site and in calling the Hotel in advance the 6 people. She left it alone after that but i thought she was rude. Anyways we stayed in a "executive double queen" room and it was amazing and beautiful. We enjoyed having the full kitchen for our snacks and the beds were AMAZING pillowtop clouds of comfort. The breakfast was wonderful and had many options including a awesome coffee machine with many flavor/style options. The morning staff was very friendly and helpful. I would definately stay here again!!

Expectations

  • Igor12345
  • Mar 20, 2012
The RiverPlace is quite a nice hotel with some unique features, but does lack a few things from making it perfect. I was told it was just recently purchased by Kimpton who are spending some more money to bring more things to it though. Hotel - a charming smaller hotel right on the river with a fantastic view and nice atmosphere. It has some space on the outside with bike and walking paths which do not make it feel as clustered as the other hotels downtown. The rooms and the inside are very clean and are nice and are not dated like you find at some hotels that have been open awhile. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Location - the location is downtown which is nice, but on the far southeast side of downtown. Portland has a ton of mass transit system that can get you anywhere downtown with the exception of this hotel so you have to do some walking if you are here compared to the other hotels that are closer to the entertainment, museum, and transit areas. The upside is it is a bit quieter and peaceful Amenities - the hotel has a nice bar and spa area for the guests which is quite comforting. The food at the hotel though is quite disappointing. Portland is a great town for food, but the food we had at the hotel was sub-par for a hotel this nice and for the city as a whole, but there are numerous great restaurants throughout the city and I understand Kimpton is pumping more resources into the restaurant and food at hotel. If you are looking to stay in and not do anything at the hotel at night, they do not have in-room movie ordering like most hotels, but they do have a selection of complimentary DVDs downstairs. Price - right now they have a ton of specials going on. You can stay at this hotel for as little as $142 a night which is quite a good deal. Normally the price is over $300 I think. Overall, a nice hotel with some unique qualities to it. These qualities some might like and some might not as much compared with the other hotels in Portland in the same class. The only real flaw that irked me was the food.

Have stayed at a lot of hotels in PDX and liked many of them. Am a big Kimpton fan so pre-disposed to like their hotels. The rooms aren't as fun/funky as others (although the bathrobes are) but big, clean and comfortable with usual Kimpton friendliness. Would stay again.

I noticed that the hotel was not very clean, which was disappointing. I ended up cleaning the bathroom myself so I would feel comfortable. Also, due to my flight being very early, an early checkout was refused to me, and I was told the reception desk would be locked in the morning until 7 am (which was when my flight was due to board). So I never did get to check out.

The Hotel is located on a busy intersection in down-town Portland, and is a nightmare to both get to and off-load. One way streets, a small drop off area and location all make getting to the hotel and checking in (on the 8th floor) a little clumsy to say the least. The hotel staff were nice, but we felt our inner room that faced the atrium was quite dismal, and lacked privacy if you wanted to open your curtains, and as the rooms were very dimly lit one felt the need to open them for additional light. The hotel is located in a very popular area for street people, there seemed to be a fair share of begging going on. I can't say we ever felt unsafe, but it was a bit much after a while. Nice hotel

We stayed for 2 nights for our honeymoon. We had very good service! The only weird thing was that the staff did not inform us that we needed to swipe our room key everytime we got on the elevator to go anywhere. Also the first night we got to the hotel the room was simply cleaned..the second night we asked for housekeeping and we came back to some small chocolate brownies on our pillow...we didn't have any of that on the first night.

My stay was good. Nothing too special about it. I wish hotels would come with DVD players so that we can watch movies. But overall, the stay was good. Nothing really wrong with the hotel at all.

Everything was wonderful, as usual and very comfortable. The only issue we had was being asked to pay $10.00/day for internet service. This is something that should be included in the reservation, as we all know, WiFi is not an expensive accommodation and one that, this day in age, should be a given. It inhibited the ability to work from the room. I did not purchase it out of principle, therefore had to go to local coffee shops off-site and it was an inconvenience. Other than that everything was very nice.

This motel was much nicer than I would have expected from a right-off-the-highway budget motel. My room was clean, comfortable and spacious. The location does make one feel a bit isolated, though. Pay a little extra for a room facing onto the inviting and nicely landscaped pool area. Otherwise, you might be facing onto a trailer park and noisy train tracks. Staff was friendly and efficient. I will stay here again,. Excellent value.

Good Base for Exploring Portland

  • TX456
  • Apr 10, 2012
The hotel served as a good "home base" for exploring Portland and the surrounding area. We looked at staying at hotels in the main downtown area, but decided to try something just outside downtown near the convention center because it was cheaper, but just as convenient. The hotel is conveniently located to a major light rail transfer station that takes you into downtown for free in just a few minutes. We walked to and from the station at night (with young kids) and felt it was safe. We were coming in from out-of-town with a car and found parking at the hotel to be a bit of a hassle. The valet option is probably the best to avoid the hassle and at $19 not much more than self-parking ($15). The self-parking only works if your timing is right (there are more rooms than parking spaces). The staff are very aware of the parking problems and try to help. We considered parking on-street since we knew we would take the car on day-trips and would not need parking all day, but at our first on-street parking space across from the hotel we found glass obviously from a car window that had been smashed at some point. So, we opted for the valet parking. The pool is slightly heated, which was nice. The two-bed room a decent size, the room quiet, the beds comfortable and the bathrooms clean. There was a microwave that could be used in the lobby, which was nice for heating up breakfast I bought at the store (there is no free continental breakfast). I wish the hotel room had a small refrigerator though. For the price, location, amenities (pool, fireplace in the lobby area, computers to use) and nice staff, this is a good deal and if we were to return to Portland, I would consider this hotel (though I'd bring a cooler!).

The staff was helpful in arranging transportation and giving us some good ideas about what to do in Portland. The Portland Street Car begins its route only steps away from the hotel, and we used it for free and easy trips into the city. At night we had a wonderful meal at Thirst, a local wine bar and restaurant a short walk away along the river. The breakfast staff was friendly and eager to please. Our room was large and comfortable with a full kitchen, comfy king sized bed , and nice sitting area. The pool and whirlpool were very nice, as was the gym.

Well earned getaway

  • Xeldra
  • May 10, 2012
Our stay was very enjoyable. Location was perfect. We attended a concert at the Rose Garden Arena, just had to walk a couple blocks. It was also nice that the hotel offered their own parking. It is always hard to stay at hotels that don't offer parking or won't pay for it specially in Portland. We were a walk away from the Steel Bridge and Chinatown. Also it was nice to be able to take a stroll and end up in downtown. Overall it was a enjoyable stay and the staff was super nice.

Beware of room by the stairs!!!

  • JP TP
  • Mar 19, 2012
If they put you in a room that has stairs directly outside of the window, ask to be moved or you will get no sleep. The stairs are metal and they are very loud whenever people walk up and down them. We would have asked to move, but the hotel as full. Other than that the rooms were very clean and comfortable. We have stayed here before and never had any problems.
