The Cities of New York State

New York City

There's a reason why so many movies and songs are based on this city. With every kind of museum imaginable here, from the famous Museum of Modern Art to the Tenement Museum, you could spend an entire vacation gallery-hopping. But you might miss out on the world contained within Central Park, where a zoo, ice rink, shopping mall and even horse-drawn carriage rides delight visitors. The West Village and Brooklyn are your destination for the funkiest of shops and markets. Experience exclusive restaurants on the Upper West Side or have the most delicious hotdog of your life in Queens.

Of course, there's also the Statue of Liberty waiting out in the bay, and you can circle the water-based sights for free with the Staten Island ferry. Hotels here can push $200 a night, but root around and it's possible to get that figure down to $150. Because of its amazing subway network and abundant cabs, you can stay in any of the five boroughs and be able to see all the sights without a vehicle.

Buffalo

Located in upstate New York, Buffalo puts up a good show against bigger rivals for the culture crown like NYC. Home to both the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and Frank Lloyd Wright's mind-blowing Darwin Martin House Complex, you can visit the site where one of history’s finest presidents, Theodore Roosevelt, had his inauguration when elected. For sports lovers, Buffalo is home to two professional sports teams: the Sabres hockey team and the Bills football team. Both teams have their own extraordinary stadiums, and an army of loyal fans. Hotels in Buffalo are very affordable, and the average price for decent accommodations is around $100 per night.

Rochester

As the third-largest city in New York, Rochester packs in the action, and is particularly beloved of family groups. Great sites such as Susan B. Anthony's house and the Mount Hope Cemetery provide the history lessons, while Lake Ontario beaches and parks designed by Central Park's own mastermind Frederick Law Olmsted provide the green interludes.

For the wine lovers out there, Finger Lakes Wine Country has trails and tours that wend their way around Keuka, Cayuga and Seneca Lakes, with the chance to taste ruby reds and crisp whites from 32 different cellars. In addition, hotels in Rochester are extremely easy on the pocketbook. With an average of hotels prices around $80, Rochester is popular amongst NYC weekenders.

Travel in New York State

Travel to New York usually starts in the Big Apple. Fly into John F Kennedy airport (JFK) or La Guardia airport (LGA) and use the shuttles or public buses to get into Manhattan. Outside of New York City, there are regional airports like Greater Rochester International (ROC) if you prefer a domestic flight, but generally it's advisable to rent a car. Get on the I-87 north of NYC and follow the line of the Hudson River towards Albany, then switch onto I-90 towards the northern lakes, Rochester, Buffalo and Niagara Falls.
