Bare Bones Discount 'hotel' in a Great Location
-
ExperiencedBudgetTraveler
- Jun 26, 2012
The hotel itself was fine for the price/location. Bare essentials which was exactly what I was looking for. However, the water temp. was a bit unsteady, the (ONE) elevator seemed to take a little long and the light didn't light up on our end so you had to just assume it was coming for you. Minor issues and if you're looking for just a place to stay with a bed and shower you'll be fine.
If you need any kind of SERVICE don't even bother. I received a parking ticket upon arrival, there was no one to valet my car, check in took at least 30 min. and the staff I dealt with was unhelpful, unacknowledged, and unfriendly. Every time I asked a question at the desk I had to wait at least 20 min. before being helped ((they where horribly slow)) and when I asked they either didn't understand what I was asking or didn't know the answer. Gave the wrong directions into the city and repeadily did not know which Ave. was to the right and left out of the building. Park Ave. is a RIGH out the front door, Madison Ave. is a LEFT. I figured it out after a day, I'm not sure how the Gershwin staff doesn't know that. I did have the manager help me with a problem but I was underwhelmed.
So over all, if you're looking for some place affordable and this is the perfect location for you it is great. BUT BE AWARE do NOT expect customer service and the usual concierge that you find at hotels in other cities (or more $$ ones). Staff was overall friendly but just useless and slow.

Great locale and clean small rooms
-
Amy business traveler
- Dec 2, 2012
Lovely hotel smack on Broadway in the heart of Upper West side at 94th. Polite staff, though I asked for a room with a bathtub, and they said yes, then when I walked into my room it was shower only. Then I called and they apoligized and moved me to a room with a bath. I was surprised thtat they have not even a tiny exercise room - I always like to run for 30 minutes on a treadmill when I'm on business travel. BUT room was perfeclty fine, clean, it's a great location, so if you just need a clean safe pleasant place to stay while you explore NYC, this would be a great fit.

I had a perfectly fine stay at the Hotel Newton. The room was a standard NY hotel room, small, but functional; came with a coffee maker, refrigerator and microwave. Room was clean and quiet. As for location, 94th and Broadway is pretty central to get to the Upper West Side and Midtown easily. The Manhattan Diner is right next door for a good nosh. A few things were a bit strange at the hotel: the phone in the room did not work, and even though I reported it, it was never fixed. The wireless access was strange also. I never got the hotel's paid wireless internet access, but ended up using a free access point, so all was good.

This Hotel is all about the location. It is right opposite Madison Sq gardens and close to the main subway stations. If you just want somewhere to sleep when exploring NYC and not that fussed about the accommodation then this is fine. The hotel is old and the decor is dated, we did have trouble with hot water but if your up early enough this is not an issue (we had an engineer look at it in about 15 min).
Bed was a bit small but comfortable, we had a Tv with about 30 channels, and we also had free WifI in our room (level 4, but higher levels might not get it). We did hear a bit of road noise from the avenue below but still slept well as we where very tired from the days events. Overall we did not have any major problems and the staff were always willing to help.

I GO PLACES
- Dec 9, 2012
I'm originally from NYC, so I don't need to be "in the heart of" the tourist attractions. This hotel is located in a "real neighborhood," and from that vantage point, it's interesting even for tourists, especially since the subway and buses are right there. I even saw a stop for the NYC tour bus a block away.
The lobby is nothing to write home about, but who cares? The hallways are long and narrow and noisy. The doors slam closed. The elevators are very slow. A tad off-putting also was walking down the hall and seeing a guest in her nightgown sitting on the floor talking on her cell phone! Still, the rooms are large by NYC standards, and all in all, it can feel above average when the price is right.

A place to lay your head
-
dustytiger
- Nov 6, 2012
I chose this location because I was traveling by train and had to stay overnight in New York going to and from Florida. I was looking for cheap and close to Penn Station. My choices were cheap and clean or sleeping at the Amtrak guest waiting area at Penn Station. The Americana met this need.
What does it have?
A clean cheap place to lay your head for the night within a New York walk to anything you might want to see or eat.
A sink to wash your face, towels under said sink.
What doesn't it have?
Wifi. Yeah seriously. Have your smartphone ready. A toilet in your room. There are many on the floor sometimes you have to go to a couple to find one that's free depending on the floor, (There are shower there too wasn't up for that adventure).
Quiet and darkness. Bring ear plugs and sleep mask.
When I first arrived at the Americana I thought I had made the biggest mistake of my life. This was my first solo trip. Thankfully I had a friend who lived in New York meet at my train and get me to the hotel. It is not really walking distance with luggage but I needed the stretch. We checked out the room and agreed it was clean and the security was there or else I would have been in his hole of an apartment whether or not we both fit.
I thought about booking somewhere else for my trip home but I realised I would not find anything cheaper and I wouldn't know if it would be clean, nor where it was and how much it would cost to get to and from Penn station (like peanuts even with a good tip for the driver) so I kept the reservation. It's not luxury by any stretch. But after sleeping in my seat on a train any clean bed for the night is nice. Just be prepared.
This is a place for a younger traveler out on an adventure who doesn't want to hang out in their room. Would I recommend it? Probably but only to people looking for exactly this; cheap and clean a place to lay your head nothing more nothing less.

Location and staff are good; everything else was bad

The two men working the front desk were friendly and helpful, and the location was perfect. The room, however, was not good. It was not well cleaned. I had to put sheets on the bed myself. The hallway was smelly. In our two room suite, one of the rooms had no working lights. The TV didn't work. The internet didn't work. The mini-fridge had not been cleaned at all. The shower had mold in it. The closet was filled with laundry bags of dirty sheets. The only upsides - we had plenty of clean pillows and blankets, and the air conditioner worked well.

Location, price, and...refrigeration

Julie Kaffe
- Jun 27, 2012
I like these accommodations. Simple enough, but since you are not me, it's probably important that I add a few qualifiers. I lived in New York for five years, I went to NYU, and I like to have a means to refrigerate my purchases from the Union Square Greenmarket. If you, like me, want to stay somewhere that is reasonably priced in this area and don't mind a place that is more like your average old, un-renovated NY apartment than the Ritz-Carlton, this is your place. (Honestly, I could care less about the pillow-top mattresses, faux-riche furnishings, and pseudo-luxuries of those sorts of hotels.) The Village Apartments is clean and efficient (and a bit endearingly shabby), and the location is perfect. I had a cute little refrigerator in which to deposit my greenmarket snap peas and in which my husband could chill beer. All of which will mean I will happily stay there again. But, as the husband said, the place might be a bit of a shock if you are more accustomed to staying in the average hotel.

Couldn't have asked for a better location - 3 minute walk from Central Park, Fifth Avenue and Columbus Circle (with shopping centre), 8 minute walk from Times Square, this hotel may not be 5 star luxury but it's perfectly comfortable (2 large beds in a twin room) and clean enough for a short break. We also recommend the diner directly beneath the hotel which was always packed - that has to say something! Definitely recommended.

Room size was nice and comfortable, location awesome - hotel staff friendly and helpful. The noise from the street was almost unbearable. I would not stay there again with any kind of street side room. I faced 77th, not Broadway - and there was noise off and on all night long. If you sleep well with all kinds of city sounds - go for it - otherwise I would ask for another area of the hotel, or stay somewhere else.

- Nov 29, 2012
We found this hotel VERY clean with a very nice, friendly staff. However, the room was very small and it was difficult to get the shower to work. There was no soap dish or shelf in the shower to hold soap or shampoo, so you had to either try to hold it while you washing, etc or leave it on the floor. The Queen size bed was comfortable and the staff did get the room ready about two hours early for us which was very helpful since it was cold and wet outside. the location was great--within walking distance of Times Square. There was a very good Italian Restaurant in the basement of the hotel.

The only things you need to know:
- $150 for a room in Manhattan.
- The kind of room you get when all you're going to do is sleep there.
- Two bathrooms per floor, so if you're squeamish about that, look elsewhere.
It's a great value for the location, and I will probably make this my go-to for solo weekend trips in NYC. It's not a luxury hotel by any stretch of the imagination, but neither is it dumpy. It's a room with a door and a bed, sink in the corner, bathroom down the hall.

NYC Chrismas Weekend Getaway

I have stayed at this hotel 3 times, now and it is well worth the price especially if you want to be close to things like Union Square, subways and great dining experiences.
The staff is very helpful and kind and they do validate parking which is great when that is the last thing you want to think about paying after a fun trip in NYC.

Gerne wieder....

A relative good hotel
-
Minh D
- Dec 24, 2012
The best thing about the hotel is its location, which is only 3 minutes walking from the train (subway) station. The B-D line in this station would take you to most of the attraction sites (shopping centers on 34rd street, 42nd street, Times Square, Central Park, etc). It will also take 7-10 mins walking to Soho, where you can find quite some fashion stores as well. However, if you really want to be in the center and can walk to the fashion districts, I'd not recommend this hotel. You can book another in mid-town for $25/night more (I used to book one and then cancelled because my friend recommend to stay in Chinatown).
The 2nd best thing about the hotel is the bathroom. It's clean, water is hot, strong and the bath space is quite roomy. At the end of the day, I think a good shower is what you really really need.
The bed is quite comfortable, I could get some really good sleep here. Overall, I do not really have any complains. I did not need any help from the staff but I saw them helping other guests quite enthusiastically.

Hotel has very convenient location, just couple steps from Central Park in Manhattan and subway station. Very reasonable price. That's nice.
It's unusual for us not to have opened doors and own keys. It's more like small apartments/rooms for rent then a hotel. Every time you reach hotel you need to call check in to open main entry door..
it was very hot in a room (late march). Once you try to switch on A/C to make air cooler it becomes very noisy from A/C itself and additional noise from Central Heating water system that's annoing during night time.
Bathroom was also inconvenient.. Room 3A didn't have even hooks to hang up clothes.

Nice location, small room, uncomfortable bed

See I will just give honest feedback, nothing more nothing less. No undue praises no rants either.
*****************************************************
Location is excellent. Few blocks from Empire estate, Times Sq, Penn station and Rockefeller Cntr. So you get the best of the world. Staff (Colin) was friendly. I booked a queen size bed. The bet I got was 2 single beds combined to make a queen size bed, which was very uncomfortable, so we requested Colin to change our room and he did it within 20 mins, We are thankful to him. The beds in this hotel are crampy and rooms very small. So it is good for backpackers, budgeted travellers. Why live in Jew Jercy for 70$ when you can live here for $100. You decide. But if you get better hotel for like $140, I htink that 40$ extra is money well spend on the good night sleep :)

I can not say enough about this hotel. The Washington Jefferson was a find. Personable service, extremely clean, and I am picky about cleanliness, great location. I would only mention that the mattress was quite soft and a little lumpy in case you are a person who likes a firm mattress. MIght be time to get some new thicker ones. I took other writers' suggestions and asked for a room in the back. It was very quiet. This is my new place to stay in NYC.
