Lovely setting for family with toddlers on the Upper West Side
-
Dr. Jimbob
- May 30, 2013
We have twin 3 1/2 year old toddlers, and this was our first experiment with travel relying solely on mass transit. We picked this place because of its proximity to Central Park and the Museum of Natural History, but it proves to be a terrific location for a batch of other reasons.
Subway accessibility is good (1 train at 79th street and Broadway, B and C at 81st Street and Central Park West), though neither stop is handicapped accessible (for that you take a seven block walk from the 72nd Street stop on the 1/2/3). Many terrific restaurants in the area, a top tier coffee shop cata-corner on Amsterdam Avenue, and a big low-priced grocery store chain at 72nd and Broadway.
Our superior queen suite was ideal - for a Manhattan hotel, quite roomy main room with two queen beds, and a separate sitting room with a small kitchenette (fridge, microwave, Keurig coffee machine, a few plates, bowls, and silverware, and a corkscrew). Flat panel TV in both rooms, though the cable signal was not HD and defaulted to a stretched display. No particular view from our room and the windows were unopenable, nice from a safety standpoint, but meant we relied on the in-room AC units to regulate temperature (which they did well).
Bathroom was a judicious size, well appointed, with Gilchrist & Soames toiletry products. Cleaning services were excellent, and you had your choice of two newspapers delivered to your doorstep every morning. In house WiFi worked pretty well, delivering good speed fairly consistently through the day. In the lobby, there is also a restaurant attached which is a very fine bistro-style, moderate-to-high priced French restaurant (nice if it's pouring and you're feeling lazy, though many fine take-out options will deliver to your room in the area and know the hotel well).
Downsides: Our double wide stroller fit into the elevator only with wiggling and yanking. It did fit, but was something of a struggle, and anybody with a wheelchair may find the same struggle. You have to negotiate steps with said stroller or wheelchair, there is a side stair with a ramp though the ramp is not wide enough for a standard width wheelchair. Noise was reasonable, though I could hear my kids shrieking from around the corner as I was returning to the room one night, so I don't know how well soundproofed the rooms are (though nobody complained to us).
All in all, though, this is more constructive criticism than genuine gripes. We loved this hotel and would definitely stay if we're looking to stay near the subway on the Upper West Side in the future.

Can't do better than this...my room had a perfect view of Lincoln Center...the rooftop pool (just a lap pool but nice) and outdoor and indoor lounge has great views of the neighborhood. Everyone was nice and the room was comfortable. Easy choice if you want to check out the shows and arts and music at Lincoln Center and/or enjoy Central Park.

Great place to stay if you're attending events at Lincoln Center or the MET. Room was clean and comfy. Great view from our window. Take your own snacks, however, you don't want to pay $6.50 for a Kit Kat bar in the room. Room was overpriced, but that's typical for New York. At least it was clean, comfy, and a great location.

This has really become my go-to everytime I come to New York. Free internet, friendly and helpful staff, great location with an awesome little market 50 feet around the corner, convenient to the subway. It's got some old charm to it but has been updated enough that it feels pretty nice. For NYC you can't beat the overall value, it's among the most affordable in the city given the solid quality you get back.

The location is spectacular. The room was very very disappointing. It was extremely hot and we had to run the air conditioner (window model, very noisey) all night to even get the room to somewhat normal temperature. The only reason the value of the room is somewhat decent is solely due to the spectacular location. Two blocks to Broadway one block to Central Park, great! Lots of good spots to eat along Columbia and Broadway.

Still a great find. When you have finished with the crowds come back to the Beacon for a relaxing rest. The staff go way out to help you. The rooms are just right. Peace perfect peace. Want to eat where the locals eat then head up town. All in all this is a great Hotel. I have stayed here time and time again and will continue to.

The Beacon is a great find. We've stayed there numerous times before and were happy to see that it had been renovated since our last stay. It couldn't have been better. The staff was very helpful and very friendly. It's close to the subway, has a Fairway grocery store directly across the street to make use of the in-room kitchenette, and only blocks from Central Park. We will definitely stay at the Beacon during our next trip to NYC.

Functional Base

Fairfax Tourist
- May 28, 2013
The hotel is generally a bit tired and needs investment, but the top 2 floors (11&12) have been refurbished so our room was ok - small but ok. Elevators are very slow and creaky, and the tv picture in the room was unwatchable as the signal was so poor with limited channels. Good access to subway, so ideal base for sight seeing, but don't plan to spend too much time in the hotel itself.

Nice place. Our room with one queen was small, but nice, comfortable feel. On the 3rd floor we heard noise from outside - barking dog, people talking loudly, but it was fine at night. Clean, nice bathroom with a fan and good quality soaps. The room was cleaned daily, to our satisfaction and the staff was friendly. The entrance & lobby have a more European feel - old, cozy. Great location - down the street from Central Park and across the street from Natural History Museum. I'd stay there again and would recommend it to others.

We were in NYC for a family graduation, and this was our second stay at this property. Particularly for the money, it is great value and a perfect location on the upper West Side (immediately across from the subway). The room size is typical for NYC, and the bathroom very nice (completely redone). The only very minor drawbacks are the single elevator, which is typical of smaller NYC hotels (we used the stairs except when we had our suitcases), and the window AC (we didn't mind but those bothered by noise might). Very clean property and very professional and polite staff. We enjoyed staying at this property and would stay here again without hesitation.

Hotel has very convenient location, just couple steps from Central Park in Manhattan and subway station. Very reasonable price. That's nice.
It's unusual for us not to have opened doors and own keys. It's more like small apartments/rooms for rent then a hotel. Every time you reach hotel you need to call check in to open main entry door..
it was very hot in a room (late march). Once you try to switch on A/C to make air cooler it becomes very noisy from A/C itself and additional noise from Central Heating water system that's annoing during night time.
Bathroom was also inconvenient.. Room 3A didn't have even hooks to hang up clothes.

We took our kids to NYC for the first time in March of 2012. The Milburn was a pleasant surprise. We booked a Queen suite which was very large and roomy. It consisted of a bedroom with full bath, a separate living room with a kitchenette, small dining table and a sleeper sofa. The sleeper sofa would have been uncomfortable for adults but was great for two light kids. Both rooms have a good size flat screen TV. The room was quiet and the staff were very helpful. parking was easy at the Avis lot around the corner ($27 per night at the time). The location is great if you like the park. With being just a block from Columbus and Amsterdam, finding good eats was not a problem.

It is just a short walk from Morningside Inn to Columbia University and many other institutions of higher learning. The neighborhood has an unmistakable academic/student flavor with many specialty boutiques, informal cafes, coffee houses and restaurants.

My husband and I (middle-aged) were disappointed with the condition of the hotel. Beds were clean and comfortble. Bathroom had broken floor tiles and miserable shower. Only soap was provided (no shampoo). No hand towels. Noise was a big problem -- wall are paperthin. The housekeeping people were very loud in the mornings (10:00 am) with lots of laughing and talking at what seemed right outside our door. (We were happy to hear laughing an pleasant conversation, however.) Our next door neighbors could be heard conversing and cavorting at 4:30 am. Pounded on the wall for them to shut-up. Saw a cockroach in our bedroom. Air conditioner was only slightly better than nothing. We realize that NYC is very expensive but for the price, we would have hoped to have gotten a room with good facilities despite not having any extras like an internet connection. Location was good. Easy access to subway and busses. Good restraunts/bakeries in the area. Easy walking to Central Park. Have to say that the hotel staff were very nice.
Description
This is a hotel for people whose most important consideration is a low price. The rooms
are small, but so are our prices, which are the lowest of decent hotels in this city. We have 120
rooms that are clean and comfortable. This is a residential neighborhood just above mid-town. It is quiet, so you will get a good night's sleep away from midtown traffic. We are five minutes from midtown, once you step into a cab or the subway. You can get a cab in less than a minute, and the subway is three blocks away, (a three minute walk). Three bus lines are also nearby. We give you maps of the city subway and bus lines. The Museum of Natural History is four blocks away on our same street, Lincoln Center is just below us, and you can walk to
the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Empire State Building is 15 minutes by subway and the Statue of Liberty, by ferry boat, is about 25 minutes.

First we were assinged a room that was really small and a little bit dirty. But we had "Luck" that the shower was not working and they couldn't fix it so we were moved to another room which was bigger and cleaner.
It is ok if you will be out of the hotel for most of the time because the installations are clean and it is secure. But it does need some reworks, also the bed was not that good so i couldn't sleep well.

It's in a great location, just outside the subway on 103rd st. So it take about 10-15 mins to get in to soho or somewhere central. The room was clean but the amenties were basic. The bathroom was small.
It is a good hotel and I would recommend it based on the value price and great location. But I would make you aware not to expect much more than a private style hostel. Our room was small and had just what was needed.
The main problem was that the pipes in the building were very noisy. So when the rooms near us took a shower we could hear the water pipes really loudly. Was only a problem when they had a shower at 6am one morning.
Other than that it did the job.

Great location, clean and quiet. The steps were a problem and the hallway is dark and narrow.
