I stay here a lot. The location is great. In one of the city's best neighborhoods and lots of excellent restaurants nearby. Rooms are small and lots of staff turnover, but that's NYC.

Typical hostel acommodation

  • Rider of Giraffes
  • May 9, 2012
I basically needed a bed for the night, and this was reasonable value. Good location, friendly staff, comfortable and reasonably quiet room. As typical for a hostel it was a shared shower room and toilet block. In essence, it was a bed for the night. I'm going to tick the "No, I would not recommend" box because it's not a hotel, although I would stay there again if, as before, I just needed somewhere to sleep.

What you would expect. Great if on a budget. Not very clean, and not fancy, but if you are only going to be there to sleep it's a good bargain.

Close to Lincoln Center and Juilliard. One bed, was too small for couple and no view. We requested upgrade, but fully booked until weekend when we were moved to larger room, which was just perfect.

I stayed one day, did not use the amenities really except a good (and costly) room service meal. I was in a ?superior? room (an upgrade) and I found it comfortable and quite large (by NY standards). Not blown away by the hotel but comfortable enough that I would return. Very close to major subways & amenities which is a big plus.

Large rooms, comfy beds, wonderful, friendly, accommodating staff, and fantastic location convenient to Lincoln Center and the theater district. This was our second stay here and we'll definitely be back. Just be sure to ask for a room away from the street. The first night, our room was so noisy that even with earplugs we had trouble sleeping. They were kind enough to give us an quieter room and even moved everything in for us while we were out for the day.

Loved the Excelsior

  • highschool friends
  • May 20, 2012
Having stayed previous visits at small apartment rentals, I was a bit nervous the Excelsior rooms would be too small and noise from the street and hallways would be a bother. Not so! My friend and I stayed 6 nights on the 15th floor in a room on the back side. There was some day time street noise even on the 15th floor and I suspect rooms facing 81 Street would be quite noisy. The room had two comfortable double beds (no bedbugs), a small closet with plenty of hangers and a surprisingly big well stocked bathroom. We never heard noise from the adjoining rooms or the hallway. The location on the C line and crosstown bus is ideal for getting to both the theatre district and museum mile. Highly recommend the Excelsior.

We were pleasantly surprised with a hotel. Room were clean and tidy, with little kitchen, air-conditioning, numerous wardrobes and a safe. You can use wi-fi (not included in the price) in a room or PC in the entrance hall. The hotel is situated 2 min. walking from a subway and 3 min. from local shops and there are also restaurants and take aways around. Would definitelly come again.

2 nights in NY

  • AlexKuz
  • Apr 4, 2012
Hotel has very convenient location, just couple steps from Central Park in Manhattan and subway station. Very reasonable price. That's nice. It's unusual for us not to have opened doors and own keys. It's more like small apartments/rooms for rent then a hotel. Every time you reach hotel you need to call check in to open main entry door.. it was very hot in a room (late march). Once you try to switch on A/C to make air cooler it becomes very noisy from A/C itself and additional noise from Central Heating water system that's annoing during night time. Bathroom was also inconvenient.. Room 3A didn't have even hooks to hang up clothes.

Great hotel in the Upper West Side

Very friendly staff. Older hotel but very well kept. Our room was extremely clean and kept. The only complaint really is that the room was a bit small - but probably about average for NY. Good location, close to most things. A subway ride away from everything.

The Lucerne is well located on the upper west side; It's been renovated so it is clean and nicely appointed. It would have been nice to have an in-room coffee maker, albeit there was an umbrella and flashlight for ememrgencies. There was 15% off of breakfast at Nice Matin restaurant downstairs and the food was very nice. The standard room is very small but OK if it's just for sleeping rather than hanging out.

Does what it says on the tin.

It's in a great location, just outside the subway on 103rd st. So it take about 10-15 mins to get in to soho or somewhere central. The room was clean but the amenties were basic. The bathroom was small. It is a good hotel and I would recommend it based on the value price and great location. But I would make you aware not to expect much more than a private style hostel. Our room was small and had just what was needed. The main problem was that the pipes in the building were very noisy. So when the rooms near us took a shower we could hear the water pipes really loudly. Was only a problem when they had a shower at 6am one morning. Other than that it did the job.

Great location, clean and quiet. The steps were a problem and the hallway is dark and narrow.

Concert getaway

The location is spectacular. The room was very very disappointing. It was extremely hot and we had to run the air conditioner (window model, very noisey) all night to even get the room to somewhat normal temperature. The only reason the value of the room is somewhat decent is solely due to the spectacular location. Two blocks to Broadway one block to Central Park, great! Lots of good spots to eat along Columbia and Broadway.

hotel personnel were very nice, good breakfast, location 1 block away from central park was great, room itself was old, compact, AC didn't work very good. Get a room on lower floor since only 1 elevator in the hotel.

Stayed a week

  • Mar 23, 2012
Room was a bit small for two people, but nicely decorated and the bathroom spotless. Other reviews covered the $4.95 Wi-Fi charge, which should be included in the cost of the room. Although we had a private bathroom, it was next to the shared bath and heavy weekend use meant quite a bit of noise between door slamming and ir hammering in the pipes. Microwave and refrigerator were nitce to have as we could enjoy leftovers from the many good nearby resaturants.

A Real Find

The Beacon is a great find. We've stayed there numerous times before and were happy to see that it had been renovated since our last stay. It couldn't have been better. The staff was very helpful and very friendly. It's close to the subway, has a Fairway grocery store directly across the street to make use of the in-room kitchenette, and only blocks from Central Park. We will definitely stay at the Beacon during our next trip to NYC.

Description
This is a hotel for people whose most important consideration is a low price. The rooms are small, but so are our prices, which are the lowest of decent hotels in this city. We have 120 rooms that are clean and comfortable. This is a residential neighborhood just above mid-town. It is quiet, so you will get a good night's sleep away from midtown traffic. We are five minutes from midtown, once you step into a cab or the subway. You can get a cab in less than a minute, and the subway is three blocks away, (a three minute walk). Three bus lines are also nearby. We give you maps of the city subway and bus lines. The Museum of Natural History is four blocks away on our same street, Lincoln Center is just below us, and you can walk to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Empire State Building is 15 minutes by subway and the Statue of Liberty, by ferry boat, is about 25 minutes.

Riverside Tower Hotel: Upper West Side

  • The Business Traveler
  • Nov 2, 2009
I have never taken the time to complete a hotel survey. Whether good or bad, I simply didn't make the effort to do it. If it was good, I'd likely return and conversely, if it was bad, I'd simply go elsewhere in the future. I feel obligated, however, to warn others exactly what they're getting into with this place so they don't make the same mistake. The location is great. The positives end there. The rooms are filthy. I'm a man's man and don't need to be pampered by 5-Star care, so when I say they're filthy, I mean I wrapped the pillow in my own t-shirt and slept in my clothes. The floor was horrific. Stains, spots and clumps of dirt greeted me when I walked in for the first time. The shower was so small you got out soapy because you couldn't maneuver to even rinse off. There was no cable, no internet (much less WiFi), and the staff at the desk in the lobby would not even look up when you walked in and out of the hotel. When I left to attend a meeting, I locked my things up in their 'secured room' which was filled with mildew-covered rollaway beds and bags of trash, which had split open (perhaps from mice) and trash was strewn about the floor. Upon returning home, I washed my clothes twice on a heavy cycle and took my suits (even the unworn ones) to the drycleaners. This hotel is absolutely filthy!

Canceled Room 5 Days Before Trip!

  • Sarah724
  • Dec 14, 2011
My boyfriend and I had stayed here when we visited NYC in April 2011. At that time, the room we had was fine but the joint bathroom was disgusting, mice, mold, etc., but it did look like they were doing renovations so we didn't think much of it at the time. We needed to stay an extra night and were given a different room which was nicer with a much nicer bathroom. The experience wasn't bad enough to make us not stay there again due to the cheap rates. However, we booked our room for our trip in December 2011 well in advance and received a call saying that the hostel had closed and we were responsible for finding other arrangements. We received this call on Monday and were leaving for NYC that Saturday. Needless to say, we were left scrambling to find another room!!

Inexpensive Hotel stay in NYC

  • Jingo
  • Nov 17, 2011
Although cheaper than what you'd find at most hotels in NYC, there are obviously reasons why. In fact, the rates really aren't all that cheap. I was charged an average of approx $130 per night not including taxes. The hotel is in a great location & the room fairly clean & with a sink, fridge & TV. However, there were cockroaches in the room the 1st night I was there. It also seems to be an SRO (single room occupancy) building so the people on my floor were possibly long time lower income residents. Lastly, there was a lot of noise coming in from either residents or buildings next to the hotel, hard to tell. I'd say try if you're really on a budget but for a single woman, probably not the best place to stay longer than a night or two.

The Morningside Inn is a newly renovated hotel in the heart of New York City's vibrant Upper Westside. It is housed in a 6-story, elevator pre-war building with the old world charm of that era. All rooms are brand new and have been decorated in a style of comfortable elegance. It is conveniently located near all public transportation along Broadway and just a short ride to the theatre district, Times Square and New York's many other attractions. It is just a short walk from Morningside Inn to Columbia University and many other institutions of higher learning. The neighborhood has an unmistakable academic/student flavor with many specialty boutiques, informal cafes, coffee houses and restaurants.

OK for singles or young couples

  • Grace
  • Oct 18, 2008
My husband and I (middle-aged) were disappointed with the condition of the hotel. Beds were clean and comfortble. Bathroom had broken floor tiles and miserable shower. Only soap was provided (no shampoo). No hand towels. Noise was a big problem -- wall are paperthin. The housekeeping people were very loud in the mornings (10:00 am) with lots of laughing and talking at what seemed right outside our door. (We were happy to hear laughing an pleasant conversation, however.) Our next door neighbors could be heard conversing and cavorting at 4:30 am. Pounded on the wall for them to shut-up. Saw a cockroach in our bedroom. Air conditioner was only slightly better than nothing. We realize that NYC is very expensive but for the price, we would have hoped to have gotten a room with good facilities despite not having any extras like an internet connection. Location was good. Easy access to subway and busses. Good restraunts/bakeries in the area. Easy walking to Central Park. Have to say that the hotel staff were very nice.
