wonderful staff, comfortable stay

  • Queen Victoria
  • May 14, 2012
The bargain hotel I had previously booked turned out to have few of the amenities I needed --a bellman on duty around the clock, an accessible front entrance, nor those I did not really need, like room service. At the last minute I found the Sheraton Tribeca at a very competitive rate. Thank goodness. The staff is very helpful and professional. The rooms are comfortable and roomy, and clean. The hotel is only 2 years old, so it is nice and new. I was in town to see many plays, half of which were downtown so the location was fine and much less touristy than Times Square. Only quibble is the room service menu is heavy on fat and complicated offerings (for example, not possible to get eggs without fried potatoes and meat). I'm from california and want more options in light fare than dried cereal.

Last minute trip to NYC before baby ;)

  • westcoastfun
  • Mar 12, 2012
I loved the location, amenities, and the hotel overall was great. I did not have time to explore the restaurant or rooftop bar. I did however feel the staff was stuffy and indifferent. I generally stay at leading hotels of the world properties and maybe my standards are a bit higher. But come on, i don't travel with my jewelry and was dressed to fly into Newark not on a private jet. So maybe i have to flash around my designer duds and layer on my mikimotos to stay there again to be treated better? I dont think I should have to. I took off a whole star for the front desk and how unfriendly the y were. When i'm smiling and they are not, it's generally not a good sign. :)

Mostly great experience

  • PlainviewKennedy74
  • May 5, 2012
Manhattan below 23rd St. has become a hipster theme park from river to river, but TriBeCa is still something of an oasis, so this hotel is ideally situated. The atrium design has the potential for noise infiltrating the rooms, but the doors and ventilation system keep the rooms absolutely quiet. My AT&T cell phone didn't work in the room, but on the plus side internet service is free. I'll definitely come back.

Young and very cool

A perfect downtown location at Grand and West Broadway, this hotspot attracts the young and very cool. Decor is modern and very well-done throughout. Rooms are New York sized - on the small side, but offers evrything one needs for a short stay. Beds are comfortable with lovely linens, and bathroom towels are thick, soft, and plentiful. The only downside was that it was a little dark. Hotel lobby has an inviting bar area, well designed with very comfortable seating, offering good drinks and small bites. A little on the expensive side, but there is no rush to leave, and one can linger over a drink with no pressure to order additionally. The staff is friendly and helpful.

The James New York, a newly built hotel anchoring the southwest corner of SoHo at Grand and Thompson Streets, will open September 1, 2010, featuring 114 guestrooms and suites bathed in natural light and unobstructed views of Manhattan. Located in the hotel, Celebrity Chef David Burkes' restaurant focuses on wholesome and hearty modern American food, locally sourced and presented in the creative and whimsical style that is Burke's trademark. Guests will enjoy several ways to experience the restaurant, including the Treehouse Bar for artisanal cocktails & homemade sweet and savory pop tarts from the Treehouse's toast bar; the loft-like main dining room featuring exposed beams and views through glass walls into the kitchen and wine cave; and outdoor space within the Urban Garden, opening this summer. The dining room boasts a bold, theatrical experience: a carving station where dishes are plated in the center of the action. David Burke Kitchen's interior is inspired by the surrounding Soho neighborhood, blending the cool, industrial simplicity of an airy loft with the rustic warmth of a country barn. The exterior of the second floor will soon feature a lushly designed Urban Garden, a welcome respite for guests above the city's hustle and bustle. The connected Garden Bar & Restaurant, takes its visual cues from the outdoor space which in turn has a variety of comfortable seating arrangements amid park-like landscaping; and will feature a select menu of snacks, an extensive selection of hot and iced teas, and will also be available for meetings and private events. Had a fabulous time

  • judy6465

Possibly the number one thing about the James is the fabulous staff. They go out of their way to connect with you and make sure that your needs are met. I can't say enough good things about everyone I dealt with. I'm quite partial to modern/contemporary design and really liked the design features of the hotel. The room was spotless and quite comfortable. They provide eats in the lobby/lounge throughout the day. Coffee and pastry in the a.m. Fruit and water in the afternoon. Wine and cheese in the evening, and cookies late night! The location in Soho was perfect for me because there's a lot I like to do in Soho. And I found it easy to get other places in Manhattan. Cab's are usually fine, but there's a subway stop right nearby and when mid-town is gridlocked as it was one of the days I was there, the convenience of fast and hassle-free transport was very welcome. All in all, a great place to stay.
