When to book your trip

Discover the natural flavors of Asheville

Surrounded by the atmospheric Great Smoky Mountains, Asheville makes a great base for nature-lovers, with nearby national parks and forests like Pisgah keeping the natural eye-candy coming. Not to be outdone by its scenery, the city also has hip art, music and food scenes to call its own. As the home of a beer-drinker's paradise of breweries and the sprawling Vanderbilt mansion Biltmore Estate, Asheville offers something for every palate.

Things to do

Asheville outdoor activities

More than 3,000 miles of trails wind around the greater Asheville area in North Carolina, providing hiking opportunities for novices and rugged terrain experts alike. Waterfalls gush through the dense evergreen forests of Pisgah and Nantahala, and the fall colors are particularly spectacular at Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Several zipline courses near the area let visitors check out the scenery from a more intense perspective. Navitat Canopy Adventures sits only 20 minutes from the city, and offers 13 ziplines, suspended sky bridges, and rappelling opportunities for those seeking more thrills.

If you'd rather stick closer to ground level, make a splash rafting down the French Broad River. Drive just 25 miles from downtown Asheville to experience class II, III and IV rapids.

The Biltmore Estate

Known as ‘America's Largest Home’, the Biltmore Estate is a French-inspired chateau, once home to George and Edith Vanderbilt, that features lush gardens, a winery, a spa, accommodations, outdoor activities and shops. Find yourself back in time, touring the expansive house that features art and furniture from the height of Vanderbilt fame and fortune at the close of the 19th century.

Explore the 8,000-acre grounds at your leisure, strolling through secluded woods or along the banks of the river; the manicured gardens are in colorful bloom from early April to late October.

Asheville breweries

The soft water that flows toward Asheville from Black Mountain has created an entire beer-making industry. With more breweries per capita than any other city in the United States, Asheville-s Brews Cruise is one of the most popular ways to experience a taste of almost everything Asheville breweries have to offer. Hop aboard a motor coach that takes you from hop house to hop house, teaching the history of Asheville's brewing scene, and serving flavors of the region along the way.

For an added dimension while you're tasting the ales, Asheville Brewing Company is located in a former movie theater, giving guests a chance to catch the latest flick while dining on award-winning pub grub. Or take the experience alfresco, and watch a movie at Wedge Brewing Company's open-air movie theater.

Asheville dining

A focus on quality marks Asheville's food culture. Many restaurateurs seek out the freshest, most local ingredients to combine in exotic and exemplary ways. Tupelo Honey Café is a local bistro with an assortment of southern food mixed with vegetarian options and an Italian flair. Pack's Tavern is a cozy pub with a pet-friendly outdoor patio and live music on the weekends. Chocolate aficionados can satisfy their sweet tooth at The Chocolate Fetish, nibbling on truffles, chocolate-dipped fruit and specialty items.

Getting there

While Asheville Regional airport (AVL) is located only 17 miles from the city, one of the best ways to travel to Asheville is by car. Interstates 40 and 240 cross the area, but the Blue Ridge Parkway is the most scenic approach. Getting from Asheville to nearby destinations like the Biltmore Estate and national forests is easiest by car, but Asheville does offer bus service throughout the city and to the town of Black Mountain. If you’re staying in one of the downtown Asheville hotels, you can get around easily on the ART bus, but make time for a trip on the old trolley network for a spot of nostalgic sight-seeing.
