Great spot to stay

  • hockey mom
  • Nov 29, 2010
We were only at the Lodge for one night but would have enjoyed staying longer if time permitted. The room was large, well laid-out and very clean. It has a great bathroom with slate and granite and a seperate shower as well as a nice tub. There was a microwave, snacks, coffee-maker and minifridge. The best part was the incredibly comfortable beds and the gas fireplace with flatscreen HDTV above. The Lodge itself is large and rambling with assorted stuffed animals placed throughout. There is a great view of the lake from the outdoor hot tub and pool however as it was November the pool was not in operation. The fitness room was also a big hit with my kids. If I was travelling to Whitefish again I would defintely stay at the Lodge!

Great fall getaway!

  • Oct 22, 2010
As a couple needing a weekend getaway, this was a great experience. We stayed in one of the new "Viking Lodge" rooms across the street from the main lodge. These rooms are the more affordable of the rooms at this hotel, but we certainly did not feel like we were getting anything less than the best. The room was very clean upon arrival. We were pleasantly surprised with the gas fireplace, the glass shower, and the nice bath tub. This room felt more like a nice master suite than it did a hotel room. Hotel staff were pleasant and accomodating. Our only complaint with the room was that the "king" bed was actually two twin beds put together, so sleeping in the middle of the bed proved to be uncomfortable. We would consider the 2 Queen option next time. The breakfast buffet left a little to be desired, and at $11.99/person, could have been much better. Our overall experience was a great one and we hope to stay there again.

Duck Inn condos are across town but fine

  • A&P
  • Aug 11, 2010
We stayed at a condo apartment, not at the Inn. The condo was across town in cozy Whitefish Montana. The condo was fine, about 1 1/2 blocks from the public beach on Whitefish Lake, nearer to the ski resort than the Inn actually -- although we were there in the summer for day hikes in Glacier National Park, about 20 miles east. This worked well. We also visited the ski resort at Big Mountain and the larger town of Kalispell. We had a great week and the condo was a great base for visiting the area. The town of Whitefish is picturesque with many inexpensive places to eat. Believe it or not, good food at the Bowling Alley on the main road into town. Also, the Red Caboose downtown was good.

Might as well stay at Holiday Inn

  • Montana Traveler
  • Aug 31, 2009
The idea that there is "Nothing finer" is completely false. There was no rustic charm, and nothing upscale about it. It was ordinary. I was very disappointed after reading the advertising. There was nothing really wrong with this hotel; it just was sort of nondescript. I expected it to be a special Montana getaway, but it might as well have been a La Quinta or another chain. For that price, it was disappointing. The staff were fine, nothing special. The room was fine, nothing special. The restaurant was fine, nothing special. For the prices they charge, they need to be a LOT more special. Our room overlooked the golf course. It was pretty ordinary.

Although the Inn is older we found it very cozy and comfortable. We found the rooms very clean and quiet. The front desk people were very helpful in letting us know what was going on in Whitefish and nearby areas. The best thing about this place is that it is right downtown and you can walk to all of the shopping and restaurants on Central Avenue. We would certainly recommend others to stay at the Downtowner. We found the rates comparable to some of the other hotels in town. We enjoyed our stay and will be returning on our next visit to Whitefish.

This place is a dump

  • Happy to be home!!
  • Aug 23, 2009
When considering our options for staying in Whitefish, our biggest concern was getting something close to the Amtrak station. It turns out that the Downtowner was the only option within walking distance. It was also more expensive than other hotels, as a result. But based on the reviews that we read from other travelers, it seemed as though this was a decent place, was convenient and would be worth the extra money. We were extremely disappointed when we arrived, to say the least. The entire property is severly outdated, despite their claims regarding a recent renovation. (I cannot even imagine what this place was like prior to their "updates".) The furniture, decor and bathrooms were old and crusty. I do believe that it was technically clean, but the overall feeling of the room was anything but inviting. And the room was stifling when we arrived, as they had not turned on the window air conditioning unit. When we turned it on, much to our dismay, it was incredibly loud, and was placed right under the curtains in such a way that the air blew the curtains all over the place. (This probably sounds ridiculous and believe me, it was!!) So, we thought that we could move the curtains to avoid this problem, but of course once we moved the curtains, we realized that we had the incredibly bright light from the hallway shining directly into our room. (Not to mention the privacy issue with other guests.) In the end, we slept without air conditioning. Overall, this was not a good experience at all and I would not recommend staying here to anyone. Unfortunately, we had to stay two nights - the night we arrived on the train and the night before we departed on the train. They had a 7-day cancellation policy, and we were arriving and departing within a 6-day window, so we were stuck with the room for the second night. I was seriously dreading having to stay there again. If I could do it over, I would have sacrificed convenience for quality and would have stayed somewhere outside of downtown Whitefish or else in nearby Kalispel. With the money we could have saved on the nightly rate, we could have hired a taxi or shuttle to pick us up from the train station.

My wife and I had a very pleasant four day stay at Kandahar Lodge. Principally in the area to visit Glacier National Park, we found the Lodge a great base in terms of it's location (an easy drive to the West entrance), and a lovely spot to come back to after day's arduous hiking. The snug bar was a great place to grab a drink and something simple to eat, and the fireplace and lounge were very inviting to just kick back and chill out in. The lodge is not a fancy or pretentious place, but is comfortable and welcoming, whilst cafe Kandahar really is a must for at least one dinner (stunning food).

The room was nice but very sparse on furniture. We were able to get a couple of plastic chairs from the front desk, but had to put most everything on the floor because there was no tables. (Except small bedside stands covered with clock and lamp.) There is no air conditioning. We had a fan that we could put in the window. This did work OK. We were there at the end of July. Most of the stores and restaurants were closed the entire time we were there. This requires you to go to Whitefish for all your meals. It is beautiful at the resort and there are some nice activity's in the area.

While we were there we spent almost everyday at Glacier National Park. It was an easy 30 minutes travel time. The views and wildlife in the park were amazing and definitely worth every minute to get there. We couldn't think of any other vacation that could top this one. The condo was amazing, clean, quiet, private, and comfortable. The staff was accommodating and friendly. We especially liked the secure underground parking. An extra bonus was the washer and dryer in our condo! During our stay the mountain resort had tons of fun activities and mountain biking races. We watched the down hill race from our balcony which provided spectacular views of the resort.

Great condo top of the line in all respects including location but it did not have an air conditioning and the room was like a sauna and did not cool down even with fans. I would recommend the condo only for winter fun until air is added.
