CLASSY!

  • wsuplee
  • Nov 22, 2011
This club has been around since 1903. It is classic -- cigar shop and smoking area, card room, billiard room, vintage lounge adjacent to lobby, 2 or three restaurants and a bar, full size pool, character, character, character. We were in St. Louis for a conference at the America's Center and this is were some of us stayed. It is 0.4 miles from the conference center and the tunnel entrance to Lumiere Place Casino is at the end of the parking lot -- oh, yea, there is self parking.

Great hotel, but has hidden expenses

  • artimake
  • Nov 27, 2011
Very large, exquisite hotel. Stayed in a room with one king bed and a nice big window overlooking downtown St. Louis. The mini fridge was great to have, and the bed was comfortable and had a nice down comforter and soft pillows. The bathroom had a large tub with the curved shower curtain rod, giving you extra space, but the shower head was so high up on the wall that I couldn't reach it without standing on the side of the tub (I'm 5'1). My husband had to come in and adjust it for me and it was really lose for some reason. I couldn't point the shower head in the direction I wanted because it kept falling downward. Not sure if it was just our room or if all the rooms are like that. Also, the layout of the bathroom puts the sink behind the door, which is awkward. You have to open the door and then close it to get to the sink. Then there are the hidden charges. The room comes with a bottle of water, but it has a $3 tag on it. You also have to pay for wi-fi in the room. They charge you $14/day to park your car in the garage, which is the only place to park and I didn't know about the parking fee until we checked-in. They do not offer complimentary breakfast, but they do have a restaurant in the hotel and a Starbucks, which means more money spent. I found the Starbucks to be a bit lacking for such a nice hotel. The coffee was typical Starbucks, but they barely had any pastries/cakes/sandwiches at all. Overall, great hotel if you don't mind spending the money. This was a special treat for my husband and I, not our typical hotel stays. We didn't feel safe walking around after dark, so be aware of the location. Even during the day we had bums trying to ask us for money and sketchy-looking people were wandering aimlessly on the streets.

Great STL Hotel

  • May 16, 2012
The hotel was perfectly situated to get to everything we wanted- arch, Busch Stadium, restaurants, and a very easy trip to Forrest Park. The staff and our room was wonderful- couldn't have asked for a much better experience. Word of caution- the hotel parking lot fills up during home baseball games and they do not reserve spots for guests.

Awesome breakfast in accommodating surroundings. Room was comfortable. Close to all the places you want to go around St. Louis. We got a huge suite - with two bedrooms and two complete baths, as well as a sitting room and full kitchen - for about $60 per night (including tax) because the hotel manager decided that we looked tired and upgraded us to a new room. A couple of issues - two of the lights in the suite did not work, and there is no restaurant, only room service, which is pretty expensive. But the beds, towels, furnishings, views, wake-up calls, and all other amenities were great. It's about three blocks from the Arch, and there are good restaurants within easy walking distance.

A bit scary

  • bobbog
  • Mar 26, 2012
In true motel fashion, the doors open onto the streets. This would not be awful except that the doors all had gaps at the bottom so that noise and bugs seeped through. The location relative to downtown was great, but the clientele, vagrant population, and run-down areas immediately north of the hotel made walking in and out of the hotel a bit frightening. The beds seemed clean, but the carpets, bathrooms, and the building itself were very run-down and pretty exposed to the elements, making them musty and grimy.

The staff was polite and very helpful. Location is right next to the big stuff so you can walk if you want to. The rooms had AC so it helped a lot during the hot summer day. but the sink in the room was dripping and made the floor wet and some other minor maintenance issues in the room.

  • Apr 17, 2012
I will start with the good. The hotel is right off the main highway. Everything we needed was within walking distance but we did take a few cabs and the bellman was eager to assist. The hotels courtesy shuttle was also available and we used it. The attached restaurant was good. We had both a breakfast and dinner buffet around $14 a person. And for the bad. There was no remote for the tv which wasnt a big deal but I tried calling the front desk and the operator multiple times and got no answer from either. Our door had to be pulled shut hard when leaving the room and both nights we returned after housekeeping had cleaned it and our door was still cracked!! There was a wet spot in the carpet in the hallway the whole weekend. Wet enough you could hear the squish as you crossed it. I am not sure what that was about but weird. And lastly, A few doors down there was a half eaten tray of food laying in the hallway. We noticed it when we returned that night about 7pm. It was still there when we left about 10 the next morning... All in all, a good stay. Just some minor discrepancies.

Not bad!

  • Random Traveler
  • Mar 27, 2011
The hotel was not in the location we expected; it wasn't "downtown" with all other attractions. Yes, it was only about a 5-7 minute drive, but the area surrounding the hotel was rundown with old, vacated buildings. Very "dirty" looking. The walls were also paper thin. We heard everything from the room next to us. Other than that, our stay was really great hotel-wise. The TV was great, microwave and refrigerator were very convenient. The staff were wonderful and nice.

We were visiting friends and family and the zoo, and this hotel was perfect for us! The staff was super helpfull and crazy nice! The room was great with a sitting area, perfect for the kiddos. Breakfast was good as well, enough of an option for the whole family. And the best part: the showers had great pressure and the hot water lasted FOREVER! We are pretty picky about our hotels and can honestly say there are only 2 that we have stayed at in the last 5 years that we would stay at again, and this place is one of them :)

Stayed One Night

  • KMICT
  • Oct 31, 2011
Stayed one night while at the World Series. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room was average. The bed was very hard and not comfortable at all. The television was very old and no remote. My reservation was for a non smoking room but they didn't have it and put me in a smoking room. I would have expected more for the price. It was double what it should have been for this type of room. For a few more dollars could have been right downtown.

This hotel was a great stay for the night. The customer service was outstanding and very helpful. The room was spotless but did not have a refrigerator which was the only downfall to my room. I am not sure if it was just my room that did not have a refrigerator or if none of them did.

Amazing staff ...

  • OwenAKASarge
  • Jan 31, 2011
I stayed here for 6 weeks for work. The check-in process was very easy and the staff was amazing, especially "Keta" and "Bekah". I was settled into my temporary "home" within 30 minutes. My suite had a full service kitchen, including: a full sized fridge, stove, sink, garbage disposal, and microwave. My internet connection was wired but was reliable. There is plenty of free parking and you are right beside a major freeway so it's easy to get on the road quickly and you are right downtown. My bathroom door didn't close fully but I mentioned it to the front desk and it was fixed right then. I had requested extra towels and clothes hangers one morning and they were in my room waiting for me when I got "home" from work that day. The business center on the main floor had 2 PC's and 1 of them was out most of the time I was there and there was no USB access to the printer so I had a bit of a problem doing my expense reports but I was able to manage. The free breakfast is good but I'd suggest getting down there early because it goes quick. The stove in my room could have been cleaned better as one day I used it to cook a pizza and there was something that smoked at the bottom of the stove. Also, the frying pan was warped which made it hard to cook with. The TV had very limited channels Overall I would rate this as a 4.5 because it was comfortable, in a good location, and the staff was great.

The staff was very friendly. The room did not have a microwave or refrigerator in it, was told that all rooms did, but the three I reserved did not. Bathrooms were extremely too small. Could barely turn around in them. Other than that it was a very quiet stay.

Checked in super late (5am) after being awake for 22 hours straight.. Host at the desk was extremely nice and helpful. He made sure to get us the latest check out possible so we could get some rest before getting on the road again. The cleaning staff however did their best to make sure we got as little sleep as possible. Disregarded the do not disturb sign twice, Ran into our actual door with come kind of heavy cart twice And, could be constantly heard shouting back and forth all morning. We checked out unrested to say the least. Room was nice, but building was hard to find.

Hotel Review

  • JPederson
  • May 1, 2012
When we walked in the front door I was a little concerned as the front steps, carpet, was not clean. My concerns soon vanished. It was a magical place. It was the St. Louis train station built in 1896 totally refurbished. The wood; stained glass and decor was magnificant. No indoor pool was a bit of a downer but the shops and the amazing resturant made up for that. The breakfast buffet in the resturant was over the top. The people were very helpful and cordial. Thanks for the experience.

Great Anniversary trip

  • Fiskerman
  • Feb 27, 2012
We had a great room; with the exception of the first night! Nice sunny south side room with a view of the outside courtyard. Loved the atmosphere and the shops; the owners were very helpful in directing us to some of the better spots in St. Louis. Access to the Metro right out the back door. The only negative was the "rowdies" who created quite a ruckus outside our door from midnight to four in the a.m. I expected better security from a four star hotel and a better response from the front desk and managment.

Nice ambiance

  • Wendy
  • Dec 6, 2008
This hotel was very easy to find and had a comforting and elegent atmosphere with a wood burning fire place in the lobby. I was very disatisfied with the hotel dining options. The room service is very limited on options and expensive. It offers food choices that are more focused on fanciness than taste. Only about ten options total. The Fox and Hound is a bar, no food offered but a cheese tray. Coming from IL, the smoking atmosphere was a bit much for me to take. The hotel is non-smoking, but the bar in the lobby is not. Overall, a decent place to stay. Not a choice for those looking forward to ammenities. The television in my room was about 20+ years old and very small. I did like the staff and their friendliness during most of the trip.

Small distractions, but overall O.K.

  • Leslie
  • Apr 22, 2007
My room was very satisfactory, and it was cleaned well each day. Fresh towels, soap etc when needed. My greatest complaint is the loudness when hall doors were closed. Sounded as though someone was slamming them shut. Annoying in the afternoon when I was trying to nap, as well as later in the evening. On one occasion, it sounded as though the water was screaming in the bathroom, and I suspect that an adjoining room had turned on the hot water in the shower. Vibration? The continental breakfast was O.K., nothing special. All in all, my experience was O.K.
