Detroit Hotels

Detroit, a major metropolis in Michigan, has had a profound impact on the world. From the advent of the automotive assembly line to the Motown sound, modern techno and rock music, Detroit continues to shape both American and global culture. The city has seen many of its historic buildings renovated, and is bustling with new developments and attractions that complement its world class museums and theatres. Detroit is an exciting travel destination filled with technological advance and historic charm.

Downtown Detroit boasts an international riverfront, ornate buildings, sculptures, fountains, the nation's second largest theater district, and one of the nation's largest collection of pre-depression era skyscrapers. Downtown Detroit features the Renaissance Center, including the tallest hotel in the Western Hemisphere, the Detroit Marriott, with the largest rooftop restaurant, Coach Insignia. Many restaurants emanate from the Renaissance Center, Greektown, the arts and theatre district, and stadium area. Joining the east riverfront parks, the city has the 982-acre Belle Isle Park with the large James Scott Memorial Fountain, historic conservatory, gardens, and spectacular views of the city skyline. Visitors may reserve a public dock downtown at the Tri-Centennial State Park and Harbor.

The guest room at the Greektown Hotel at Casino was great! Very modern and contemporary. A little small. The restaurant for breakfast was horrible! Very overpriced. Nowhere else to eat! The food was aweful! The buffet was overpriced for dinner did not have a very big selection for a buffet at a Casino. The only drawback is that if you do not use valet you need to go from the parking garage with all of your luggage to one elevator and then another elevator to your room. There is also no pool. The fitness room was nice. I would recommend for a short trip.

It was a nice hotel but we were on the 5th floor and it was EXTREMELY hot. There was no way to adjust the temperature and it was at least 85 degrees in the room. We blocked the vent with a pillow and opened the window but it was really uncomfortable.

affordable clean accomodation, but TERRIBLE location

  • Oct 18, 2011
I just got back from my trip to Detroit and I had stayed at Hotel St. Regis for 1 night. Thankfully it was just one night. The hotel is quite an old architecture and is located in a neighborhood that appears to be quite shady. I arrived on a Sunday and found the neighborhood to be deserted. Although the hotel is located not very far from Downtown, I was terribly disappointed to know that there was only one eatery across the street. I went around the block trying to look for a decent place to eat or order my food from, but found it hard to believe that near a bug hotel like that, there was one fast food store (Happy pizza) and a Chinese take out place. None of them seemed to be decent places to eat. I saw plenty of suspicious looking people walking around (people who looked like they had doped and drunk for days). Gleefully, the city Police Department is a block away. The only saving grace was a CVS phramacy from where I ended up getting chips and soda for lunch. The hotel menu is terrible. As far as the rooms are concerned, they were clean, beds were comfortable. I am saying beds because in the room I was initially assigned, the conditioner started making a noise and I could not sleep further. So I called the front desk person who told me that he would send someone to my room. After waiting for about 30 minutes, I went downstairs to ask if someting could be done about it. I was surprised when her said "Is it still making noise?" and I thought to myself, "You said you'd send somebody and now you expect the conditioner to get fixed by itself?" Then he quickly assigned me to another room and called someone to accompany me to the room to make sure everything in the room was OK. The other room was alright, but I was surprised that not a single word of apology was mentioned for the inconvenience caused. The hotel looked desserted and at night in the lobby (when I went down to report the conditioner making noise), I heard the sound of glass being shattered (as if someone was repeatedly banging a heavy glass object with a hammer) at 2-3 minute intervals from the "private party room" the whole time I waited in the lobby. There were no lights on in that room. The front desk person went inside the room and brought back someone else with him and that person quietly went and sent down in the lobby waiting area. It felt a little strange! 2 positive things: They let me check in earlier than the hotel check in time and check out a little after the check out time. Hence I give a 3-star rating. Bottom line: Plus - Clean rooms and spacious bath rooms; Minus - Old building, malfunctioning/non-functioning gadgets in rooms, poor location with very shady activities in and around the premises, poor options for dining, personnel can improve on courtesy

Description
From every angle, a unique, conveniently located downtown Detroit hotel The Milner, built in 1917 as the Henry Clay Hotel, is the oldest continuously operating hotel in Detroit. Earle Milner acquired the property partly because of its unique triangular "Flat Iron" style architecture. Milner also was attracted by the property's great location in the heart of Detroit, which remains an asset. The Milner's clean, affordable rooms offer attractive amenities such as free Internet access and a complimentary continental breakfast. Highlights Classic, centrally located hotel in the heart of downtown Detroit, within easy reach of major destinationsFree high-speed Internet accessComplimentary continental breakfastAccess to nearby YMCA fitness center and swimming pool Rooms Guests enjoy clean, comfortable guest rooms with attractive amenities, including free high-speed Internet, cable television, coffee maker, and iron with ironing board. Features Guests appreciate that the Milner is only steps from Comerica Park, Ford Field, major theaters and concert halls, and numerous restaurants and nightclubs. The hotel is also convenient to the Joe Louis Arena, Cobo Convention Center, Renaissance Center, and Greektown Casino.   The adage "a bed and a bath for a buck and a half" -- popularized by Milner Hotels in the early 20th century – is now part of history. The room was clean and the location was nice but we did not have any heat in our room and it was freezing in there; we asked twice about it and was told that we would have heat soon but we never did. Also, when we checked in the clerk did not look to see that we had booked through Orbitz then charged me again for the room. He said he had to get his manager to fix it; I checked the next morning and was told I was all set but I'm still waiting to see if I was charged twice.

This hotel is in a great location, very affordable, and is fine if you just need a place to sleep for a night while doing something in Detroit. The room has no bells or whistles. A bit grungy, my room had a kitchenette with cupboards, stove and plates etc...however it did not have a fridge. The hotel has no parking but there is metered parking on the street and a parking garage across the street for the Opera House can be used for 5 dollars. Overall a bit dirty but very affordable and centrally located. Close to ballpark and football stadium, Greektown, Fox etc...

Better than it looks

The first impression is scary, run down neighborhood and a check-in desk with security glass. But the staff is very helpful, the room is very comfortable and clean. Good TV, in room coffee pot, very comfortable bed. And best of all the price can't be beat.

when we checked in and got to our room everything was alright. 2 of my guests said the beds and pillows were so uncomfterable that they accually slept on the floor. after getting all our stuff in the room I noticed that the molding and drywall by the door on the inside and out had been kicked so some had fallen out. Also the keys to get in the room were very stupid and wouldnt hardly let us in, that was a constant fight. When we left in the AM, my boyfriend grabbed up a cup of coffee he quickly poured it out when he realized that there was a thick goopy substance at the bottom of his cup. BUT it was during hallowicked so they were prolly just overwhelmed at the number of ppl they had to cater to all the sudden.

Not a place to stay with the kids.

  • The Gambler
  • Jan 18, 2010
Hourly rates were posted in the lobby (enough said). $5 key deposit, I did get it back. Not a place you want to stay if your bringing the kids. It is nicely located between 2 casinos so if you want cheap place to store your stuff while spending most of your time at motorcity or MGM go for it.

Worst hotel ever!

  • Stevo Sand
  • Oct 16, 2011
Definitely my worst hotel experience ever. Knew the hotel looked a little sketchy when I was booking it. Had no idea it would be as bad as it was. Hotel manager tried to scam an extra $20 for having a 3rd person with us. First room we were given had fresh blood stains on the sheets. We were given a different room but it wasn't much better. Definitely pay the $20 or $30 more to stay in a better hotel!

Nice view getaway

  • Aleiouse
  • Apr 18, 2012
The room was beautiful, recently renovated with high ceilings, large modern bathroom and great view of the river from the extra large windows. The maid service was good. Front desk service leaved a lot to be desired. The woman in charge told me that even though my reservation said "river view," this did not mean that I was entitled to one since I booked throug a third party. She did give me a room on the river side because I was adamant that I only booked with the hotel because of the view. I am not sure I would stay there again.

Staff very pleasant and helpful! The cleaning staff needs training. Rooms look clean but were very dusty. When they cleaned the room, the didn't replace dirty glasses with clean ones. Instead they put the glass in the bathroom, that still had water in it, back in the original spot on the sink. I also had a dirty face towel put in my room that had a red spot on it (disgusting). Mirrors and glass tables were very smeary. Cleaning staff not very detail. The hotel also experience problems with the boiler, which took the company 3 days to fix. However the staff was very pleasant and tried to be accommodating as much as they could.

Mother and daughter staycation

The hotel is beautiful and the staff were more than accomodating. Even though the hotel is a non-smoking premise there was still a strong smell of cigarette smoke in the room. It was probably coming from the adjoining casino which allows smoking. Also, we were disappointed that weekday room service hours did not extend beyond 11:00pm and the menu selection was very limited

We were turned off at first by the casino, but our stay got a lot better after finally getting into our room. The only bad thing was that Orbitz messed up our reservation. Fortunately the hotel took care of it that evening and straightened everything out the next day.

Nightmare

  • May 5, 2010
This is a motel not more than 5 feet from a nude bar. While attempting to check in, there were lots of thugs in and out and around the motel. I requested a room right off of the parkinglot because of the area. When I went out to go to the room, there were people drinking and smoking right out front. There were men and women coming from the bar into the rooms. I immediately went back in and cancelled the room. This is a very scary place.

Great Couples Getaway/ Guys or Girls Weekend Out

  • Marie Y
  • May 18, 2012
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location is ideal...you can gamble and catch a show. Also, there are several restaurants where you can eat and all this is in one place. Let's not forget the dance club or the spa. The only thing missing is when I did relax in my room there was no guide to let you know what I was watching, sounds minor I know, but most people want to know that answer. Other hotels I've stayed in have not faired as well as this one. Now keep in mind they were not a casino/hotel, so I can't hold that against them. You did have to leave out to go dancing. While the couple of restaurants they did have had great food, there was not a lot of variety. Nor was there anything to do in the hotel itself other than watch tv, go to the spa, or entertain yourselves. That is why I know I'll visit this casino/hotel in the future.

This place was an absolute pit; the worst hotel experience I've had in a lifetime (I'm 55). I wanted to get my last 2 nights of the 3 refunded, and the hotel refused to give me a refund. There was whooping-it-up partying the entire night on Friday, and the amorous "hourly" customers on Saturday night were quieter, but kept us awake in a different way all the same. An absolute pit that should be closed down, and makes me nervous about ever booking with Orbitz again.

Great room and hotel, but it is very noisy... could hear parties in my room and could not stand the lobby after 7 pm on a Saturday night (loud people and a loud band). Room was great. One thing, I was planning on having dinner on site with a friend, but we could no do so because she is under 21. All of the restaurants must be accessed via the casino, which means anyone under 21 cannot eat on site unless you get room service. IMHO this is a MAJOR flaw.

When I pulled up to the motel, it was scary! The room was semi cleaned, smell old & like smoke! The bed had a sink hole in the middle. It was not a comfortable experience. I was traveling with 2 others, if I was alone I never would've stayed there. The staff was very nice! Just not a hotel for me. It was not far from the event but, I won't stay here again....
