Boston city guide and hotels

Boston distinguishes itself through grand institutions like the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology and the dream stadium of baseball buffs, Fenway Park. From the colonial defiance of the Boston Tea Party to the US? oldest public park, Boston Common, it's possible to walk a path of American history through the streets of the Massachusetts capital. Influences from scientists, scholars and the young university crowd continue to mold the city into an ever-changing and energetic destination.

Where to stay: Boston Neighborhoods

Charlestown

Located on the north banks of the Charles River, Charlestown is where to come for a peep at ?Old Boston?. Charlestown Navy Yard and the Bunker Hill historic site characterize the flavor of this area, and many hotels in Charlestown give visitors a first-rate view of the Inner Harbor.

Back Bay

Back Bay is home to Boston's Public Alleys, which run north-south parallel behind many of the apartment buildings and businesses in the neighborhood. These narrow, time-sealed alleys offer a flipside look at the city, and if you walk them all the way to the upmarket South End, you?ll find a cluster of hotels. In addition, the South End is the home of the nation's largest Victorian-era neighborhood.

Charles River and Beacon Hill

Majestic 18th century mansions lord over the east bank of the Charles River ? stay in one yourself, if you can find a converted B&B - while the nearby Beacon Hill area is made up of quaint, gas-lit streets, brick walkways and decorative ironwork. Returning to the present, modern restaurants on Charles Street offer everything from five-star cuisine to New England clam chowder and oyster sliders.

Things to do

Fenway Park

This legendary arena has something to offer sports fans, history buffs and foodies alike, while spectators watch batted balls fly at the legendary Green Monster backstop wall. The stadium's single red seat commemorates the point of the longest home run ever hit in the Park, a whopping 502 feet from home plate.

Museum of Fine Arts Boston

Those with a hunger for learning have a full plate of options in Boston and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston owns nearly half a million works of world treasures, including some of Van Gogh's most evocative works, while the finds from the Giza expeditions to Egypt are awesome antiquities.

Museum of African-American History

Preserving the history of African-Americans in New England is the specific aim here, with the museum appropriately pitched at the site of Boston's former African Meeting House, also considered the oldest African-American church in the United States.

Harvard University

Don?t miss the chance to take a peek inside the ivy-coated campus at Harvard University just outside Boston, taking in some exhibits at the Harvard Museum of Natural History while you?re there.

Boston walking trails

Also called "The Walkable City," you can take your pick from many historic paths, including the 14-site Black Heritage Trail, or the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail that begins at Boston Common and winds its way to Charlestown, ending at the awesome U.S.S. Constitution. Just off the Freedom Trail on the Public Garden lake, the afternoon goes from exercise to elegance with a smooth ride aboard the city's Swan Boats (open April to September).

Transport

Many visitors arrive in Boston via Logan International Airport (BOS), located less than four miles from the city's center, in East Boston. Trains are also a common form of transport; Amtrak lines connect Beantown to most of New England's major cities at the South Station. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority runs many local lines from here, including Boston's subway and commuter rail. Technologies old and new merge when you load mobile tickets onto your smartphone to hop on and off trains around the city.

Fall into autumn: Boston vacations for leaf peepers

Move from leaf peeping to ghost peeping with Haunted Boston’s Ghost Tour. The company’s ghoulish, lantern-led walking tours connect visitors to Boston’s most famous ghosts and tell the kind of haunted tales you craved as a kid and still secretly love as an adult. Among other tidbits, tour-goers learn which well-known Boston hotel is its most haunted. Visit the Haunted Boston Ghost Tours for a $3 off coupon. There’s something unmistakably Boston about the sight of swarthy rowers cutting through a rippling river, and you can soak up that Ivy League feeling at this year’s 47th Head of the Charles Regatta on Oct. 22 and 23, 2011. The world’s largest regatta (also free!) takes place on the Charles River starting at the Boston University Boathouse and ending at Artesani Playground. The Weld Exhibition is a favorite viewing site.
