All things went well...no real problems...things seemed clean enough. The room was very small...television very small. The check in area and staff was fairly typical of this brand...by far nothing to write home about. It did serve the purpose that I wanted...less expensive. I could not give anymore stars because frankly...it trails most brands. The value was good compared to other brands in the area for this time of year.

Shady area, rude staff

  • queenbee69
  • May 10, 2012
Area feels extremely unsafe... people were staggering around between the hotel and convenience store next door. The hotel lobby is very shabby, I saw no pool and the chain link fence is hardly appealing. Booked this hotel on the phone on the way there and when we saw it 15 min later, the rude desk clerk Brett refused to cancel our reservation and said there was a 100% cancellation fee.

Room was clean, not enough towels and they were paper thin. Beds had cheap matresses. Drive to Bourbon street was quick, but after traffic and parking, I regret not paying the extra money for a room on bourbon. We did not feel safe at this hotel, due to a disturbance right across the street involving a shooting in broad daylight. The hotel staff's response was welcome to New Orleans. Glad it was for only one night and never staying there again!

When I first booked my room at the Super 8 in New Orleans I believed that room would be just four walls, a ceiling, and an uncomfortable bed. Was I surprised! For the price, this hotel was beyond nice. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and very knowledgable about the city. The room had some extras I didn't see advertised such as a mini-fridge, and a hair dryer. They say you get what you pay for, but not here. You get a whole lot more.

Hotel service is average. The hotel staff are terrible even if you're just calling to get access to their wifi. If you want a hotel at a cheap price and near the casino, Bourbon Street, Canal Street, and the other popular street, Decatur, then this hotel is within walking distances of the places you are wanting to go. The room cleanliness needs big improvements. Even the TV remote looks dirty and needs to be cleaned under the bed. If you are only staying for the night and out and about during the day time, then this hotel would suit your preferences. For a couple's mini vacation spot, this hotel did not met our standards.

Liked the old style inn atmosphere but the rooms were very small, carpets were stained/nasty, bath room shower knob was falling off. If your staying there to party and just sleep thats fine but other than that an older couple will find it uncomfortable. The hotel had construction going on and was very noisy. Also the streets out front were being repaved. This was not disclosed prior to booking and should have been. B/C

Out of the Way but SO convenient

  • Lost Cousin Peanut

It was out of the way but convenient for what we wanted to do. The staff was efficient, the food was ordinary but acceptable. Our biggest problem was that the ice machines were not working. What we were looking for was a convenient and comfortable place, fairly accessible to our needs and we did find this at this motel. I would go there again.

Downtown boutique hotel celebrates West Indian spirit in Creole CityThe St. James Hotel honors the legend of West Indian immigrant and merchant, Che, who died in 1851 near the hotel. The portal opened by voodoo priestesses to guide his spirit to the Caribbean is said to have helped Civil War soldiers enter death peacefully. The St. James Hotel harkens to its Caribbean roots with elegant West Indian decor, brick and stone work, ornate iron work and lush plantings. Every room at this boutique hotel is slightly different. Great Value in the Heart of New Orleans

  • Former Nawlinian
  • Dec 25, 2012
I hadn't heard of this hotel, but the rates couldn't be beat. Pros: Only a few blocks from the Quarter, very courteous and friendly staff, clean and comfortable room, free wifi, incredibly fair price for location. Cons: Not exactly luxurious or lavish, room kind of small, no cable, a little noisy (due to guests mostly, neighborhood is fairly quiet spot at night). Really minor quibbles though; I just needed a place to stay while visiting friends, and the St. James suited my needs well.

Great location, excellent staff, mediocre amenities

  • 1313Dauphine
  • Dec 6, 2012
We had a great time at the St. James. The location was unbeatable, parking was suitable and the staff was amazingly helpful. Little things in the room made it irritable at times, like the hot water in the shower turning on and off at times, but besides that, it was an excellent time. Thank you!

I like the location of this hotel, not right in the middle of all the activities but close enough to walk to all of them. I like where I stay to be quieter! My only complaint about the room was the bed - one side was higher than the other. The hotel bar was great - best Bloody Mary's I've had!

This hotel was close enough but far enough away from the Quarter. I stayed by myself a few days extra after a work conference and I felt safe. I was close enough to the Quarter to see the tourist stuff, but far enough away to not dealing with the partying that occurs. It was nice to be close to the Riverwalk and the streetcars.

Perfect location, very friendly staff, beautiful room, comforatable bed, BUT maid service is terrrible! We left room midmorning and returned around 3pm. Room had not been cleaned yet so I called font desk , a couple times within 2hrs, I went in the hall and found a maid and ask her to clean room. She only 1 towel ,2 hand cloths and 2 floormats, thats all. I told front desk next morning and they said maid service is contracted. WOW

Fantastic French Quarter location

Have made many trips to New Orleans, all for weekend getaways or to attend certain music festivals that N.O. have. First time in this hotel. Very enjoyable experience. Very quaint, small hotel. Rooms are small but updated and clean. This the best way to enjoy the French Quarter. We lived in N.O. many years ago and continue to come back. Only to minor negatives. Still no elevator, but not really a problem. No bath tub (wife loves her bath tub) and no provision for parking by the hotel; you have to find your own. There is Central Parking Co. lot next door where you can park overnight for $35 if a place is available. The location cannot be beaten. Two blocks from Jackson Square. We loved it.

Hotel was in a great location(4 blocks from Bourbon st) for the price. They weren't the friendliest, but for the price I didn't care. Expect to pay $25 a night for parking and $100 deposit on the room. They have dishes and silverware in the room. If you don't clean any used dishes then expect a minimum $25 charge as well.

Bad Timing

A friend and I stayed at the BW Avalon not long after they had suffered hurricane damage. Our floor was being completely remodeled, and they had loud de-humidifiers all the way down our hallway. The dining area was also shut down, and breakfast was in another room. Overall, the room was clean (considering), the staff seemed pleasant enough, and it was cheaper than staying in NO, though it's a bit out of the way and there isn't much in the way of food around the hotel itself. I expected some kind of discount considering the state of the hallway (which was beginning to smell like mold), but none was offered.

The rooms were mediocre at best. With cracks in the walls and ceilings. The lighting left alot to be desired and was far to dim for my liking. The area was "interesting" to say the least and our room was close to a gas station where people decided the need to "bump" their loud music. Which woke me several times. Our hotel key was deactivated in between the two days we were their for no reason. So when we arrived back to our room late I had to go get the key "re-charged" for that night. Overall I have stayed at other hotels in the new orleans area and I will never again sacrifice quality and sense of safety to save a couple of dollars. And no I am not an older person who needs dead scilence to sleep or is paranoid for no reason. If you have a family I recommend looking elsewhere.

I have been in New Orleans on several occasions, however never stayed at this hotel, therefore I was somewhat apprehensive when I booked it. Upon my arrival the staff was friendly and efficient. It is a small boutique hotel, however it was perfect for what I wanted. It is close to Bourbon street, Jackson square and restaurants. The building is clean. I will definitely consider staying in this hotel again in the future.

We chose to stay here to get away from the traditional hotel atmosphere and enjoy something more "french quarter-ish." For 2 night stay w/o kids, room, location, courtyard, and convenience was awesome. A little nervous feeling once we arrived, but easily became comfortable. Very convenient for Bourbon, Decatur, Canal, etc..

Inn on St. Peter Street - New Orleans French Quarter

  • King Alexander
  • Sep 8, 2012
I stayed only one overnight, for oral argument to the Louisiana Supreme Court, so my experience is limited. My small room was mostly filled by the king size bed in this 200+ year old building, but it was very nice, original wood floor, huge window behind original shutters on ground floor facing the street in a quiet residental part of the French Quarter, painted original native brick facade forming the street side wall. There is no hotel parking, but independent protected parking is available in the area $20 to $35 for 24 hours. The staff was very courteous and helpful. Modern wave-card locks, nice large flat tv, nice bathroom fixtures. The only glitch was inability to make a long distance call from the room telephone, when I had temporarily lost my mobile. This should have been possible but there were no instructions and the night auditor wasn't able to supply any that worked, however he let me make a call from the front desk. The price was very reasonable and the location was great, quiet but near the action. I have stayed in many downtown New Orleans hotels, and would happily stay at this one again.

We stayed in the creole house off of St. Ann st. and I loved how close it was to the Fench Quarter. Only downfall was we had to find parking ourselves. When finally getting through traffic and all the blocked off roads, we finally found a parking spot and we literally didn't move it until we left 3 days later. There were clubs, food and bats close by so we walked everywhere. The room small but we only needed a place to pass out and get ready for the next day.

Good location but scary parking attendant

I am at front desk for check in & they were very nice & helpful but before I could finish signing for room, Parking attendant rushes in lobby yelling at me to come & park car now! I had to leave desk , follow him to underground parking garage where he continues to yell at me & insult me because he thinks I'm taking too long to move car. He had me shaking as I went back to lobby.....not a great first impression of hotel!!! The location was good... easy to get around but no restaurant close by. They do however provide coffee & tea in room. Just beware of parking attendant....he has bad attitude and anger issues...I recommend to self park which is $20 per day
