New Orleans city guide

Known as the spiritual home of jazz, Cajun cuisine and Mardi Gras, New Orleans offers visitors a unique experience all of its own. This southern Louisiana city is synonymous with the phrase 'laissez les bons temps rouler' (let the good times roll), and whether you find it in the ornate architecture of the French Quarter, the music of the Preservation Hall, or simply wandering the banks of the Mississippi in the soft twilight, New Orleans knows how to show its guests a seriously good time.

Where to stay: New Orleans neighborhoods

The French Quarter

Stay in the French Quarter to find the heart and soul of New Orleans, and easy access to nearby attractions like Jackson Square. The Vieux Carr‚ is a melting pot of European-styled architecture and African culture, where different styles of music spill from almost every street caf‚ and bar as the sun goes down.

CBD

The Central Business District is a vibrant, popular spot in downtown New Orleans. The vibe is sleek and modern, and attracts a cool mix of suit-wearing execs, creative types and visitors. You'll find the Louisiana Children's Museum, National World War II Museum and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art all within easy reach.

Garden District

Uptown, luxury-seekers can stay in the Garden District for a more elegant experience. This time-capsule-for-19th-century New Orleans still clutches on to tradition with its classical street plan, grassy parks and pristine squares.

Warehouse District

Art-lovers flock to this cool, cosmopolitan precinct -- also knows as the Arts District-- which is ripe with modern-art galleries, museums and restaurants. Contemporary Arts Center forming the focal point.

Things to see

Get a taste of New Orleans' diverse legacy by visiting the attractions around the French Quarter, most notably the 2.5-acre park at Jackson Square, which has been classed a National Landmark since 1960.

Nearby, on the banks of the Mississippi, St Louis Cathedral remains one of the oldest operational churches in the U.S. History buffs will enjoy the National World War II Museum in the Arts District, while New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) has a prestigious collection of French and American art, as well as African and Japanese artifacts and 60 outdoor sculptures.

Families shouldn't miss the Audubon Zoo or the Aquarium of the Americas, with its 600 species of marine life and the popular Caribbean Reef viewing tunnel. Those interested in sport will love the 72,003-seater Mercedes-Benz Superdrome; this impressive space also hosts exhibitions and festivals.

Transport

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) is New Orleans' main airport, located 15 miles outside of the city. Airport shuttle buses run every half hour to the main hotel districts in the French Quarter, Fauborg Marigny and Garden District.

While walking is the best way to see the city, the Charles Avenue Streetcar is a fun way to get from the uptown to the downtown areas. There's also the free Canal Street ferry, or you can buy a JazzyPass if you plan on using the bus a lot during your stay.

Accommodation

New Orleans, like most cities, has a sliding scale of hotels. Visitors can find luxury 5-star suites at The Ritz-Carlton, where a price tag of $299 upwards will get you access to amenities like the indoor pool and Garden District style interiors, as well as a desirable French Quarter location. Another charmer: grand dame Le Pavillon Hotel, which puts you in easy walking distance to the French Quarter and the Warehouse District. Standard rooms can be found at hotels like the Comfort Inn & Suites Downtown (from $129). For a more intimate environment, the city also has plenty of B&Bs and inns.

Annual events and festivals

The most famous New Orleans event is Mardi Gras, which usually happens between February and March, taking visitors on a whirlwind tour of the city in full party mode. Enjoy street parades, outrageous costumes and the fun ritual of throwing colored beads -- at floats, strangers and each other!

May sees Jazz Fest return to New Orleans, a 10-day celebration of the city's best-loved music genre, with both modern and traditional performances and names like Santana and Irvin Mayfield gracing the stage. Satchmo SummerFest pays tribute to the city's favorite son, Louis Armstrong, in August, while food heritage is celebrated at the Treme Creole Gumbo Festival in November.
