Nice hotel

There are somethings that I found interesting about this hotel. Given the price, I was happy I secured such a lovely spot, close to the water and a fair walk to Navy Pier. My room was small and in the corner by the metal fire escape(outside my window) which was really cool...I could have walked out onto it if I chose. Although small, it was the perfect size for one person(probably two).
The staff allowed me to check in 3 hours prior to typical check in time which was greatly appreciated without any additional fee! Thank goodness!
However, when I ordered room service on a Monday night(because the establishment downstairs was 3 dollars more than room service price) it took the staff an hour and a half to bring the food...I ordered a salad. It was a little disheartening but they still received a tip. That's the only part that sticks out in my mind. Otherwise, it was a lovely place to stay for just the night...the heating apparatus was noisy and loud throughout the night but I found a way to quiet it down.

This is a hotel that has seen better days. A friend of mine described it best "Just a little tired". While staying in an old hotel is often charming, the woodwork in the room was is very poor condition and the bathroom walls and ceiling showed signs of repeated poor quality patching and repair. There are other near by charming old hotels at similar prices.

Located in a perfect place close to bus stops, touristic buses and a block away from Michigan Ave.
Housekeeping forgot to clean up one of our rooms the fourth day. We had to wait about 40 minutes till they arrive.
The rooms are dark and do not have ceiling lights, only lamps (4).
Rooms are confortables but rugs, desk, lamps and TV were dusty everyday.

weekly biz travel
- Jan 6, 2012
The room was clean, small but adequate, interesting, inexpensive, and perfect for my one-night business stay. They provide Rusk toiletries. My only minor complaint was that the vending machines on 5 floors would not accept my change - all my quarters were perhaps too new and the machines too old? - so I gave up (and did not pursue with the hotel staff, so perhaps a fix was available). But I will definitely return for all my business trips, and have already suggested to my husband using this hotel as a base for future leisure travel to Chicago. I would highly recommend this hotel.

We planned several days in downtown Chicago before heading up north for a family wedding and wanted to stay near the museums. Essex Inn was a perfect spot - easy access to the CTA bus and train, and we were able to walk to the Shedd Aquarium and Museum Campus. We had a great time and the hotel staff was wonderful - they gave us great directions and suggestions for local restaurants. I would definately recommend them!

Great Experience!! Loved Hotel!!
-

- Jan 26, 2012
Ok so I read a bunch of reviews before I booked this hotel and I was a bit skeptical considering there were mixed opinions. I usually forget to come back and rate where I stayed but I figured I would like to put my 2 cents in...I took the advice from a few different reviews and when I checked in I asked for a non-smoking room on the 17th floor that is a refurbished room. We received a room with all of those requests and we couldn't have been happier. It was just a one night stay but we had a blast. We also had 3 closets which probably would have been even more helpful had we stayed longer but still was nice to have the extra room! The small kitchenette was great!!! We were able to keep our beer and champagne cold and make popcorn in the microwave!! As far as I could see everything was clean. You can tell nothing is brand new but for the price I paid I was thrilled!!! Not to mention it is right behind the John Hancock building and Water Tower Place so walking is very convenient!! We ate at Mike Ditka's, which is one of my favorite places, and it is only 2 blocks away!!!

We stayed for one night just to get out of our routine. The staff could not have been nicer. The room was comfortable and reminded me of a small European hotel. The free breakfast was an unexpected surprise. Although the furniture was a little worn looking, everything else was in tip top shape. You can't beat the price for this location.

We had a very pleasant time at the hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful when we arrived late in the evening. Suggested a good place for a late night dinner. The restaurant in the hotel is a great place for breakfast and reasonable priced. Location is great. Easy walk to Michigan Ave.

Was suprised with the overall value. Location is awesome, minimal size room but clean. Common area kept up and clean. Window was drafty but was able to keep room warm. Neat little restaurant off the lobby. And had a tiny window with a fantastic view. Totally suited my purpose and no dissapointments.

This hotel is in a great location for shopping, restaurants, and site seeing. It is very easy to catch the buses to visit the museums, aquaruims, and other required tourist musts. We bought the 3 day bus passes and city passes. I would not recommed the City pass for everyone. I would have rather bought the full access passes at the Shedd Aquaruim and the Field Museum and not the City pass. The staff at the hotel is excellent. They are very helpful and friendly.

I stayed at the Wyndham a weekend in January this year and enjoyed my stay. The location was great- I recommend the Corner Bakery right across the street for breakfast, and Garrett's popcorn shop down a couple of blocks for a delicious snack. The staff were nice and friendly and the hotel was clean but offered few amenities. The TVs were outdated and the "cold box" in the room didn't get below 50 degrees. We walked everywhere from the hotel that we wanted to go but it would be relatively easy to catch a cab.

This is no more than a 3 star place, but value wise very good if you are looking for a non-fuss, non-fancy place. It looks a bit grim from the street, but the room looked like it was recently renovated, very clean, nice beds, roomy - no problems at all and better than I expected. Parking and internet were included - last time I stayed at one of the big star-big name hotels on Michigan they charged for internet which is one of my pet peeves, so bonus points for that. Would def stay here again.

Winter Weekend Escape

I had never been to Chicago before and was quite satisfied with my stay at the W Lakeshore. The hotel seems as if it has been converted into a W. Overall they did a great job. My only complaints are that the ceilings are on the low side throughout the hotel and they have that awful popcorn finish. The rooms are very chic and feel more like a cool apartment than a stuffy hotel room. My one complaint regarding the room is that I found the beds very uncomfortable. The mattress was on the hard side and the pillows were not down. Also the bed and bath linens seemed to be a low thread count and were on the scratchy side.

This was a fun quick trip/getaway. Did a package where parking and two drinks were included. Room was comfortable. The bar is always fun. The location is great for shopping, and hitting the nightlife afterwards. Since Bliss spa is right in the hotel, this was a great deal.

Three friends of mine and I were meeting up in Chicago to celebrate New Years. We chose this hotel because the price was very affordable and the location seemed ideal. When we arrived our expectations were exceeded!
We were immediately greeted by a very friendly concierge who got right to work on checking us in even though we arrived a few hours before check-in time. She was thorough, professional and very quick! We were given several maps and brochures that were very helpful in navigating our way around our first time in Chicago.
The room was very clean, spacious and comfortable. Plenty of clubs, bars, and restaurants nearby. We loved staying here!

Grande dame of the Gold Coast and Chicago Home to Hollywood's EliteThis Gold Coast boutique hotel has long been a magnet for Hollywood's elite, drawing the likes of Frank Sinatra, Gary Sinise, Richard Gere and Vince Vaughn since 1926. Classic decor and an under-the-radar location in one of Chicago's poshest neighborhoods drive its appeal. Nearby Rush Street, with all its bars and restaurants, certainly doesn't hurt, either. HighlightsHistoric boutique hotel in the Gold CoastBusiness centerHigh-speed Internet access Rooms The hotel sticks to traditional furnishings -- there are no shag rugs or zebra ottomans here. Great location and the staff are very nice. This hotel is very hopping at night and security was a bit of a pain after coming back at midnight from being out with friends. They made me show my room key (no worries) but after showing I was staying there they made me step back over the rope and walk around which was only 2 feet away!! Other then that the staff was great.

Everything at the Conrad was wonderful. Location is perfect, staff friendly. Only suggestion I would make is have a coffee maker in room. Great hotel, would stay again.
