Plantation-style goes upscale on Kauai's Royal Coconut CoastSet on 25 acres along a three-mile beach -- Kauai's longest -- this resort evokes the graciousness of the plantation era but with a host of contemporary amenities. The beach, which is perfect for sauntering or sunning, is not for swimming. No problem. Kauai Beach Resort has four pools, a beachfront sand-bottomed pool and a fantasy pool with a 75-foot lava-tube water slide among them. Two restaurants, a lounge, a fitness center and a spa round out the facilities. And when guests want to explore further afield, Kauai's east coast is an ideal spot from which to do it. Highlights Fantasy pool with 75-foot lava-tube water slideSeries of concerts and programs promoting Hawaiian arts and artistsHawaiian Rainforest SpaComplimentary bocceComplimentary airport shuttle LocationKauai's Royal Coconut Coast is rife with sacred sites and groves of slender coconut palms, with its character shaped in part by long, curving Wailua River, the only navigable river in all of Hawaii. A stay here should include visits to a trio of sites, Fern Grotto, Secret Falls, and 80-foot Wailua Falls, made famous in the opening scene of TV classic "Fantasy Island." RoomsAccents such as louvered doors and wood floors recall plantation style, but the old plantation homes didn't have what these rooms at Kauai Beach Resort have: travertine marble in the bathrooms and iPod docks in the living rooms. FeaturesThere's a distinctly Hawaiian feel to Kauai Beach Resort with its island architecture, but also a culture of sharing and promoting authentic Hawaiiana that sets it apart. The resort hosts events all year, including local musicians who share their art and stories, benefit concerts supporting the perpetuation of Hawaiian language and music, and a festival featuring the state's top slack-key artists. Check the annual calendar and plan your trip accordingly. Although the beach out front isn't safe for swimming, Lydgate Beach Park, a couple of miles away, offers excellent swimming and snorkeling. Opulent Poipu resort is both playground and blissful retreatAcres of saltwater lagoons and freshwater pools, grottos, waterfalls, and an extravagance of tropical blooms create a setting so lush it could be a movie backdrop for the ultimate island love story. Tranquil but playful -- who can resist a 150-foot water slide? -- the AAA Four Diamond Grand Hyatt Kauai inspires thoughts of paradise. For spa-lovers it may well be paradise since Anara Spa added its blissful garden sanctuary. Yet golfers, kayakers and tennis players will also find idyllic ways to while away the hours … or days. Highlights 45,000-square-foot Anara Spa Camp Hyatt (ages 3-12), now partnered with National Geographic KidsAdjacent Shipwreck Beach, where "Six Days Seven Nights" was filmed RoomsDecor at the Grand Hyatt Kauai is "Classic Hawaiian" with warm hues and rich woods. There are more than 600 rooms, each with lanai or balcony, but the resort doesn't feel crowded thanks to meandering paths and waterways that create a multitude of secluded, peaceful areas. FeaturesIt is hard to peg the resort as ideal for couples or families, lovers or adventurers, golfers or kayakers, because it is for all of the above. Romantics find hidden nooks among the gardens and lagoons and in the serene spa. Tranquil lagoons beckon to kayakers while golfers can take the challenge posed by Poipu Bay Golf Course, where distractions include whales breaching just offshore. Parents have bonding time with children during cultural and family activities, and adult time while kids play and learn in highly regarded Camp Hyatt. A twice-weekly luau and Polynesian revue is for everyone. DiningThere are nearly a dozen restaurants, bars, and snack venues at the Grand Hyatt Kauai, including an espresso bar where caffeine junkies can jump-start the day at 5:30 a.m. Stevenson's Library channels the ambiance of a Victorian gentleman's club (ladies welcome), a cozy spot for late-night Cognac or Port. We stayed at the Kaha Lani to join friends, one who had completed the Kona Ironman @ 70 yrs. Their accomodations had recently been remodeled and quite nice. Our rooms had not been remodeled and paint and fixtures looked tired. The one bedroom unit would be more than satisfactory if remodeled.

I took my family to Kauai for the Labor Day weekend. We had a late arrival and the office was closed, but the security guard had our information and keys and told me to "officially" check in the following morning. A couple of things off putting to this property is that the office closes at 6pm and there is no hospitality room for guests that have later flights. The beach is not easy to swim in so it was pool and beaches elsewhere.
Otherwise, the staff is very friendly and happy to assist with directions or eatery and activity suggestions.
My kids are late teens, early 20s and all had a nice time hanging out with each other and mom!
