Luxury resort entices with gentle waves and challenging fairways Spread across 800 acres edging Kalapaki Beach, swanky Kauai Marriott Resort has what it takes for a fabulous tropical vacation, not the least of which is a 26,000-square-foot mega pool and Jack Nicklaus championship golf course. The resort's 10-story building holds 356 stylish rooms with views across flowering gardens and the blue waters of Nawiliwili Bay. On the sand, the famed Kalapaki Beach Boys have water sport rentals and surfing pros waiting to teach. Not that action is everything, because this is a fine place to kick back and do nothing. It is centrally located for exploring, from Waimea Canyon 31 miles west to the Na Pali cliffs 38 miles north. The shops and restaurants of Poipu Beach are just 15 miles southwest. FeaturesAfter a $50-million renovation in 2010, this luxury gem shines anew. Rooms feature bold colors and sleek, contemporary furnishings with an island vibe. There are six restaurants, including a morning coffee bar, with Italian, Japanese, seafood and international in the culinary mix. Worst room is still OK

  • Cheapskate54
  • Jan 17, 2012
We stayed for 4 days and nights in January 2012 in the worst room in the hotel. First floor, no view, standard amenities next to the elevators. We got a fantastic rate and knew that it would be their worst room so we didn't care about it. If we had been expecting ocean view that would have been a serious problem but since we knew it was going to be a non view room, it was fine. The King size bed was very comfortable. The TV was a 40 inch or bigger flat screen and the room was clean. The only time we spent in the room was sleeping. The rest of the hotel is great. The pool area is one of the nicest I have ever seen at a resort Including Marriott Ko Olina on Oahu and Marriott Beach Club Maui. This is the original Marriott resort on Kauai and has been expanded numerous times but its still a great property. Staff is friendly, location is great, pool is fabulous, and beach is nice but not spectacular as Hawaiian beaches go. Restaurants on site are typical resort restaurants with typical entrees between $20-30. If you are looking for a centrally located hotel on Kauai that can be had for a great rate this is a good option.

Description
Plantation-style goes upscale on Kauai's Royal Coconut CoastSet on 25 acres along a three-mile beach -- Kauai's longest -- this resort evokes the graciousness of the plantation era but with a host of contemporary amenities. The beach, which is perfect for sauntering or sunning, is not for swimming. No problem. Kauai Beach Resort has four pools, a beachfront sand-bottomed pool and a fantasy pool with a 75-foot lava-tube water slide among them. Two restaurants, a lounge, a fitness center and a spa round out the facilities. And when guests want to explore further afield, Kauai's east coast is an ideal spot from which to do it. Highlights Fantasy pool with 75-foot lava-tube water slideSeries of concerts and programs promoting Hawaiian arts and artistsHawaiian Rainforest SpaComplimentary bocceComplimentary airport shuttle LocationKauai's Royal Coconut Coast is rife with sacred sites and groves of slender coconut palms, with its character shaped in part by long, curving Wailua River, the only navigable river in all of Hawaii. A stay here should include visits to a trio of sites, Fern Grotto, Secret Falls, and 80-foot Wailua Falls, made famous in the opening scene of TV classic "Fantasy Island." RoomsAccents such as louvered doors and wood floors recall plantation style, but the old plantation homes didn't have what these rooms at Kauai Beach Resort have: travertine marble in the bathrooms and iPod docks in the living rooms. FeaturesThere's a distinctly Hawaiian feel to Kauai Beach Resort with its island architecture, but also a culture of sharing and promoting authentic Hawaiiana that sets it apart. The resort hosts events all year, including local musicians who share their art and stories, benefit concerts supporting the perpetuation of Hawaiian language and music, and a festival featuring the state's top slack-key artists. Check the annual calendar and plan your trip accordingly.   Although the beach out front isn't safe for swimming, Lydgate Beach Park, a couple of miles away, offers excellent swimming and snorkeling. Our stay was very relaxing. We even loved the roosters in the morning! I wouldn't recommend the restaurant for dinner. It was overpriced and I heard two other tables send their food back as did we. But their are plenty of places to eat nearby.

Opulent Poipu resort is both playground and blissful retreatAcres of saltwater lagoons and freshwater pools, grottos, waterfalls, and an extravagance of tropical blooms create a setting so lush it could be a movie backdrop for the ultimate island love story. Tranquil but playful -- who can resist a 150-foot water slide? -- the AAA Four Diamond Grand Hyatt Kauai inspires thoughts of paradise. For spa-lovers it may well be paradise since Anara Spa added its blissful garden sanctuary. Yet golfers, kayakers and tennis players will also find idyllic ways to while away the hours … or days. Highlights 45,000-square-foot Anara Spa Camp Hyatt (ages 3-12), now partnered with National Geographic KidsAdjacent Shipwreck Beach, where "Six Days Seven Nights" was filmed RoomsDecor at the Grand Hyatt Kauai is "Classic Hawaiian" with warm hues and rich woods. There are more than 600 rooms, each with lanai or balcony, but the resort doesn't feel crowded thanks to meandering paths and waterways that create a multitude of secluded, peaceful areas. FeaturesIt is hard to peg the resort as ideal for couples or families, lovers or adventurers, golfers or kayakers, because it is for all of the above. Romantics find hidden nooks among the gardens and lagoons and in the serene spa. Tranquil lagoons beckon to kayakers while golfers can take the challenge posed by Poipu Bay Golf Course, where distractions include whales breaching just offshore. Parents have bonding time with children during cultural and family activities, and adult time while kids play and learn in highly regarded Camp Hyatt. A twice-weekly luau and Polynesian revue is for everyone. DiningThere are nearly a dozen restaurants, bars, and snack venues at the Grand Hyatt Kauai, including an espresso bar where caffeine junkies can jump-start the day at 5:30 a.m. Stevenson's Library channels the ambiance of a Victorian gentleman's club (ladies welcome), a cozy spot for late-night Cognac or Port. Loved this hotel! The pools were amazing and I loved the water slide. The food in the restaurants was fantastic, but you really pay for it. But you also get what you pay for! I could easily spend an entire vacation here without leaving! The room was comfy and the staff was friendly and accommodating. Overall, it really added to the experience of being in Kauai.

My husband and I traveled to Kauai for the first time this January and made the excellent decision to stay at the Hyatt. Make sure you tell them if it is your honeymoon or anniversary - they delivered champagne to our room and we also got a cabana rental and a complimentary dessert. We ate at Dondero's one night and it was pretty good. The concierge told them it was our honeymoon and they delivered two special desserts and tea to us for free which was great. The service was excellent. We also booked a helicopter tour and a zipline tour with the concierge which were AMAZING. Worth every penny. I especially loved the ziplining.

Staff was great. Condo was in convenient location to access both ends of the island. Resort was quiet. Great views of ocean with access to walking paths right along the ocean. Can walk to Lydgate Park for safe swimming. Resort had security staff throughout the night--never had any problems. Well stocked kitchen made cooking a breeze especially using local produce from so many farmers' markets. Resort laundry room was clean and up to date--much appreciated.

We were not expecting high luxury but were so pleasantly surprised by our spacious and comfortable condo, I would return in a heartbeat. Located on the east side of the island, it was perfect for touring the north and the south ends of Kauai. Plenty to do in the area and convenient grocery shopping just up the road allowed us to save money on meals and get a real taste for how the locals live. Our views facing the ocean were beautiful and the pool seemed attractive and sufficient although we never used it. Although a little dated in construction, the decor was clean and cheerful. Bring earplugs though since the island is overrun by roosters.

Lihue inn offers history, modest pricing and a hint of plantation charmKauai Inn was the first hotel on Kauai and retains plantation charm and simplicity. Family owned and run, it ably captures the laid-back spirit that for many vacationers makes Kauai a favorite among the Hawaiian Islands. Rooms are comfortable and pleasant and guests enjoy gathering poolside for a complimentary continental breakfast each morning. Kauai Inn is easy on the budget but not without conveniences. There is a fine pool area, views of Nawiliwili Harbor and it is close to golf and an array of sport and tour options, including Kalapaki Beach. Highlights Laid-back charmBudget-friendlyProximity to surfing and other water sportsLess than four miles from the airport LocationLihue, on the eastern shore, has more to recommend it than the fact that it is home to the main airport on Kauai. Kalapaki Beach is a sweet curve of sand offering relatively protected waters and a slew of water sports, from surfing and windsurfing to boogie boarding. Catamaran and kayak tours are available nearby, and Niumalu Beach Park, a short way along the Lihue shoreline, is the ideal launch spot for a paddle up lovely Huleia River. RoomsThe simple, pleasant rooms at Kauai Inn include a small refrigerator and microwave for guest convenience, air conditioning and ceiling fans, and complimentary high-speed Internet access. There are also conveniences such as a hair dryer and iron (if you must). If you want a patio, request a room on the ground floor. FeaturesNo pretentions here. The hotel was a little hard to find, but once we were there we were very impressed with the friendliness of the staff. They allowed us to check in early so we could get our 13 month old down for his nap and had a crib for him (we weren't traveling with one). The rooms were simple but clean. There is a pool and also the rooms (main floor) have a porch leading out to a grassy area. The staff puts out a decent continental breakfast for the guests starting at 8:00am. We had been staying on another part of the island and stayed at this hotel for the night before we flew out - I would highly recommend this hotel for similar trips. The property is close to some restaurants, beach, and the airport.

Budget-friendly Lihue hotel offers old Hawaii charm and aloha spiritRestored, remodeled and under new ownership since 2005, Kauai Palms Hotel evokes a retro old Hawaii ambiance delivered with an abundance of aloha spirit -- all within minutes of the airport. Value is the overriding concept here but Kauai Palms Hotel is proof that value and quality are not mutually exclusive. Each of the 28 cozy guest rooms is tastefully decorated with island accents, some with kitchenettes, some with air conditioning, all with ceiling fans and windows that allow for breezy cooling. Free Internet and free parking add to the value. Highlights Value ratesOwned by a Kauai resident  Old-fashioned charm, modern touchesConvenient location two miles from the airportFree wireless Internet access in rooms LocationLihue is a combination of resort town and small-town Hawaii. There is a championship golf course, enticing resort restaurants and various tour operators are based in town. But there are also parks and small restaurants favored by locals, and Kalapaki Beach is popular with resort guests and locals alike. Lihue is also centrally located for exploring all of Kauai, from Hanalei Bay in the north all the way around to Waimea Canyon and Alakai Swamp in the west and Mount Waialeale, the wettest spot on Earth, in the heart of the island. FeaturesAffordable and friendly, Kauai Palms Hotel has a charm to it that many value-priced hotels simply cannot muster, apparent in the plantation-style building and rooms decorated with Hawaiian memorabilia and tropical accents. It is an easy choice for budget-conscious vacationers who do not want to give up evocative island views, in this case of the verdant Haupu Mountain Range. Rates alone make this hotel a deal, but kitchenettes in some units stretch vacation dollars even further. Kauai Palms Hotel rates very high for convenience. I spent a very comfortable evening at this hotel before an early flight out of Lihue. I really wanted an inexpensive place to stay near the airport, and this fit the bill perfectly. Plus, the room was comfortable, the front desk attendant was very pleasant and kindly suggested a nearby restaurant for dinner, and even though there seemed to be a lot of people staying that night (including a large-ish group of students), I was never bothered by any noise. The bathroom was a little dated and small, but I prefer vintage, so it really was perfect for me.

We liked the location of the hotel - very close to the airport (without getting annoyed by the air traffic), close to shopping and restaurants. Perfect location if you want to do day trips since it is located right in the middle of the main road connecting the west part of the island with its north point. The hotel has sand beach suitable for swimming. It is in a small bay, so the ocean is relatively calm compare to other beaches. We found out that not all the Kauai beaches are available for swimming. It is not good for snorkeling but you can drive to Poipu Beach and snorkel there – only 20 minutes from hotel. The pool is large and a nice option. Hotel was just renovated but do not expect major luxury in a brand new hotel. From what we observed they renovated the tiles by the pool and one of the restaurants. Rooms are nice but were not renovated – at least ours was not. Breakfast buffet at the hotel is pretty expensive but you can find bunch of local breakfast places close to the hotel. The restaurants are good – average with higher than average prices. However, if you are looking for a good Italian place go to Kauai Pasta in Lihue – food is excellent!!!! And prices are very good too!!! Also try the Beach House in Poipu – that is good.
