Very comfortable bed and breakfast. Room was spotless and had a stunning ocean view. No restaurants nearby, so be prepared to drive to Hilo for dinner. Wake up to an amazing breakfast cooked by the owner and shared overlooking the sunrise over the ocean. Good launch point for seeing the volcanoes to the south or the Waipio valley to the north.

Wonderful Vacation

  • Vaca L0ver
  • May 29, 2012
My boyfriend and I stayed at Waikaloa Village for a week in April. We had a wonderful time at the resort. During our stay we embarked on the dolphin quest, zip lining, snorkeling, and of course the luau on the property. The dolphins were expensive but a dream come true, an amazing experience. Zip lining took us to the other side of the island that was a thrilling adventure in itself. Snorkeling was conveniently accessible in the resort, along with the luau (with excellent waitresses and the extra expense of the open bar)! The room was clean with a great view. The staff was friendly, especially the bartenders who recommended local spots. We would love to go back, a great first vacation together.

The resort is called the "Shores". I was looking for the "Aston Shores", so I missed it the first pass. We called reception, and were told it's by the Hilton. We enjoyed our stay, very quiet, nicely kept property, but dated furniture. Clean and comfortable.

Friendly staff, nice landscaping, best beaches just a couple of miles down the hill, spacious rooms, convenient to grocery. Ocean view in distance and golf course view in rear of room. Quiet and extra clean. Affordable, better than other resorts in area. Waikola area has much better beaches than Kona with less congestion. I cannot wait to return to Paniola Greens soon. The resort has a nice, clean pool with hot tub and fitness room, towels available for the pool and beach. Gas grills conveniently located to buildings.

Lovely honeymoon

  • Elizabella
  • Oct 8, 2012
We got in late after the reception building was closed for check in but they left our keys to the condo in a lock box outside so it was easy to get in with no hassle. The grounds are perfectly manicured and the community is gated. The condos have everything you need for a great stay! A full kitchen with anything you might need for cooking meals, washer/dryer, beach mats and towels, the king size bed was very comfortable. There is also a DVD rental station in the reception building and you can rent 2 DVD's a night. The only complaint I have about the condo itself is the towels are awful, feels like you're drying off with sandpaper. The pool is gorgeous, it's a saltwater pool, and a huge spa that seats 10 people with great jets. There are also a lot of beautiful birds that are on the property. The condos are a very short drive to Queen's Marketplace (which closes at 11pm) that carries just about anything you might need without having to drive into Kona. Gas is also close by. There is a public beach as well. Really cannot say anything bad about this place besides the towels, our stay was amazing and we'd go back and stay there again for sure!

The Halii Kai Appartment resort is situated within the Waikoloa resort, an artificial tourist village with a number of hotels and two shop areas. Halli Kai is very quiet and beautiful, consisting of around 25 buildings with 4-6 appartments. The spacy appartments are privately owned, some of them are rented out. This explains why interior design may vary. Our appartment was very nice and decorated with obvious taste. The kitchen was well equipped but it did not have a barbecue, but the resort offers an area with 3 top notch grills. The resort has a small but exclusive and cozy pool area close to the waterfront, incuding the gym with ocean view and a restaurant, serving delicious meals at very reasonable pricing. Tennis is first come first serve and equipment can be borrowed at the front desk. All in all an excellent place for a family to use as a base camp when visiting the north/east of Big Island, or to just relax and let the days fly by.

Aloha and smiles are a way of life in Hawaii, and it shows at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort. Open air reception and dining blend into the natural atmosphere. Breakfast buffet was very tasty with omelets made to order. Ocean view room was small but impeccably clean each day. A short walk from the Marriott entrance to one upscale shopping venue, and about 1/4 mile walk to another. Beautiful sunsets .... Gatherings... as the Hawaiians say....over the beach & Pacific Ocean at the Hotel. Located on the NW part of the Island 17 miles north of KOA through the 1859 lava flow...an exciting experience for the 1st time visitor!

Room is big enough for six. Sandwiched between the Marriott and Hilton Waikoloa Village. #1. Beds feel like Heavenly beds. Slept comfortably. Couches not so great however. It kept shedding feathers. #2. We could walk to Kings or Queens Shopping Center. Tip however is one should stock up at Costco and save $$$. Merrimans, Romanos Marcaroni Grill and Roys for a nice night out. #3. Full Kitchen with granite countertops and BBQ in Lanai! Pack some spices in your suitcase; none stocked. #4. A Bay Beach and pool within walking distance. #5. Short drive to Hapuna State Beach which is a must and room is stocked with ice cooler, beach chairs and beach towels. Overall, would stay again w/o hesitation.

Good value

We stayed last week of Dec 2011 in unit 9E. The condo is in a perfect location. It is literally on A-Bay beach and next to 2 shopping malls and many restaurants. The unit is nicely furnished and we love the convenience of the kitchen and the washer/dryer. The only complaint is that the pool is not heated and everyone entering the pool complained about how cold the water is. Also there is only one pool and hot tub on the property and it gets crowded. My unit was managed by Outrigger Condo and I am surprised that there is no daily housekeeping service. I was told that housekeeping would come every 7 days! So you need to make your own bed and clean up after yourself.

Good location

Even though we do not golf, this was very good value for a top location. We had ground level unit facing north and the green golf course. Short distance to Hapuna Beach (great for any age that wants to Boogie Board) and Kohala Coast. Only 1 hr. drive to Mona Kea visitor center, close to Kailua-Kona. AND, they recycled! It is amazing in a one week stay how much can be recycled, even plastic bags. We heard that the island was going to ban plastic grocery bags soon-- suggest they place reusable plastic grocery bags in each unit and use their recycling and the bags to attract the tourists who appreciate that kind of touch.

Description
In the cool upcountry at the base of Mauna Kea, Waimea Country Lodge welcomes you with warm island hospitality. Awake to complimentary locally-grown coffee, morning mists, rolling green grasslands, and extraordinary views of Mauna Kea. It's a location unlike that of any other Big Island accommodations, and it's no wonder. This quaint, farmhouse-style lodge seems to blend right in with the landscape. These accomodations are spacious retreats, featuring kitchenettes with a microwave, daily maid service, high-speed Internet, and a color TV you may never turn on. From the lodge there are endless opportunities to soak up the area's rich history that has been so carefully preserved throughout the years. Walk to Waimea Town (also known as Kamuela). There you'll find Parker Ranch, one of the biggest working ranches in the United States, along with western-wear stores, cultural and sporting events, and even rodeos. You'll also have easy access to Mauna Kea summit and its observatories, a premier spot on the planet for stargazing. On Mauna Kea, the world's tallest mountain, you'll see horse and cattle ranches that cover miles of open grassland. This is indeed home of the Hawaiian cowboy or "paniolo." Head east to the Waipio Valley lookout. Head west and explore the rugged coastline and beautiful beaches of the Kohala Coast, like Hapuna Beach Park just a 15-minute drive away. Be Ready To Be Charmed at this Big Island Hotel.

This is the second trip to Hilo that we have spent at Uncle Billy's and in the 4 years since our last trip, the rooms our exactly the same. No remodel or update to the rooms at all. We love the open style of the lobby and garden but would have liked the rooms to have been nicer. We went knowing what it was like but would have enjoyed a nice surprize

A friendly laid back place

  • RASSLS
  • Nov 2, 2012
Wonderful supportive staff. There was a tsunami warming while in Hilo and the staff was spot-on organized, supportive and efficient. All guests had to leave all hotels in the area for nearby shelters. After 5 hours and the all clear, we returned to staff anxious to serve and get us back into our rooms. This facility is older and yes could use some updates and refurbishing here and there. However for a clean convenient facility, that provides helpful and friendly staff and a good value, we were happy. Folks that demand marble floors and the latest furnishings won't be happy. Folks seeking value, cleanliness, helpful people, and a laid back pretty floral setting will be happy. We even saw staff quickly coming to the aid of a guest having a health crisis. They did a good job.

Good location, overall good experience

  • runningman123
  • Aug 8, 2012
Without us even asking they gave us an updated room with a king bed. Though we were only supposed to have a garden view we lucked out and ended up with a fantastic view of the ocean. There is no carpet in the rooms but there is white shiny tile. It looked like they didn't cover the bathtub when they did some plastering or something as there was hard, dried up plaster in the tub. The bathroom looked nice and was fully tiled with a large wide sink. The beds were comfortable and the room was mostly clean--we noticed the remodeling was done somewhat carelessly in some small areas EX: you can see some areas where the new paint didn't cover the wall completely in the corners and near the floor. This did not effect us though. The location is great with the ocean and tide pools in the lava rocks just a few feet away from the hotel, we even saw a sting-ray swimming by the edge. It is situated right off banyan drive where there are numerous, large and famous banyan trees. We did not try the breakfast they have on the main level. Yes the elevators were scary with very old and dirty carpet and some panels of the wall not completely re-modeled yet. Also, some other parts of the hotel are still being re-done as well with unfinished paint jobs and a whole open floor next to the pool that looks like they are working on. For us, the remodeling didn't effect our stay and it was overall a good experience

Half of the hotel is being renovated. Slowly. There are no restaurants on site but they do offer a breakfast buffet that i didn't partake in. my room had been recently renovated and was very nice and pleasant with an asian feel. Bed was very comfy and stylish. Bathroom was nice and big and all new. Staff was very nice and courteous. View was nice too. overlooking Hilo bay. Hopefully in the future it will all be finished and upgraded and maybe have a nice bar/restaurant in it overlooking the bay.

Great Vacation

  • akJohn
  • Dec 10, 2012
What a great time. The hotel itself is fantastic and the location and beach are great. The staff were amazing and genuinely friendly and helpful. I would go there again in a heartbeat. I would suggest that they pay more attention to the small details. Wallpaper corners peeling up, small areas of mold, not enough and inconvenient outlets, lights along walkways that were knocked over and wires exposed for obviously long periods of time, beach shower not working for a long period of time, etc. Again these are relatively minor things, and I got an amazing deal , but if I were paying high dollar there I would be wondering why the details were not being attended to better. As with all the hotels, the food is expensive, but really not too bad for what you get and the convenience. The location is very convenient for going to several other local eateries, some of which are amazing and most of the attractions are a short drive away.

There were three of us in one room, and because the room and bathroom are generously sized, it worked well. The staff was gracious but not fawning and the setting is fabulous. The room was quiet and well stocked with towels, etc. My suggestions include updating the funky old-style TV, and providing three chairs rather than two for the patio.

Great time at the Orchid during Kona Ironman

  • Oct 18, 2012
The atmosphere at the hotel was fantastic, romantic and mostly couples. Great cabanas overlooking the ocean if you don't mind paying the $60/day fee. Our booking included an "activity card" which made snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boards, etc. all free. This was a great thing to have if you like water sports. Free breakfast was a surprise... didn't mention it when we booked but it saved us a ton and the food was great. Our original room was a partial ocean view but was on the first floor and had NO VIEW at all unless you stood on a chair! The staff was accommodating and switched our room by the third day though and our room on the 6th floor was fantastic.

5-days in paradise

  • Kininc
  • Nov 19, 2012
We were greeted with a lea and were led to a beautiful ocean view room in the beach club area. It is a beautiful resort with many antiques from the Rockefeller collection. The amenities were lovely - 2- robes, terry and Japanese style. 2- sinks plenty of storage and hangers. The only criticism is that the food is very expensive ($80 for 2- breakfast buffets including tax and tip) and average.

I will go there again

This place is a hidden gem. There's a private beach and really amazing snorkeling. We've seen turtles both trips to the Mauna Kea. On this trip, we saw huge schools of fish and turtles 5 feet from the shore. We've also been able to see Manta rays in the evenings. The staff work really hard to keep the rooms clean. They clean your room and replenish your towels twice a day and have turn down service as standard service. It's the perfect place to mellow out, enjoy white sandy beaches, snorkel and relax. Water is not too rough so it's great for people who aren't great swimmers. This is our favorite place to stay on the Big Island. We will continue to stay at the Mauna Kea.

Vacation in paradise

  • The WAG
  • Nov 5, 2012
With the up and down reputation of the King Kamehameha, I was a little uncertain about the outcome. The hotel was clean and fresh. The A/C worked great, which I think is mandatory for a tropical vacation. The pool and deck were clean and well mantained. The beach front, though public, seems only to be frequented by Hotel guests with easy acces to snokeling. Located in the center of old Kailua, it was a short walk to restaraunts, etc. You could actually get by without a car. The on site restaraunts were not exactly top notch. The partial ocean view from the 6th floor was fine, kind of reminded me of Italy. All in all, a great value. The only problem is finding time to get back there.
