Southern charm in Savannah Southside - I-95, 204 Area
With its rich history, numerous park-like squares, moss-draped oaks and location on the Atlantic coast, Savannah, GA, is the closest you can get to experiencing the antebellum South in the modern day. Unlike the vast majority of cities in the Deep South, which were ravaged by Union troops during the Civil War, Savannah emerged largely unscathed. That's mostly thanks to its enterprising mayor who gave General Sherman's troops permission to take control of the city in exchange for not burning it to the ground. As a result, the city is still home to hundreds of historic, impeccably-maintained homes and buildings.
Things to see
Savannah Historic District
As the oldest city in Georgia, it's only fitting that Savannah has one of the largest historic districts in the U.S. It basically follows the boundaries of the original town plan from 1733, and most of the city's bucolic squares are located there. The district abounds with stunning examples of 18th- and 19th-century architecture, including exceptional examples of Greek Revival, Gothic and Georgian styles.
If you're a fan of the novel “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,” you can't miss this wonderfully spooky yet beautiful cemetery. Moss drapes down from stately oak trees, and a variety of exquisite statues, mausoleums and gravestones dot the landscape. The cemetery also affords incredible views of the Savannah River from several vantage points.
When you're in Savannah and want to enjoy premium shopping, dining and entertainment, you can't go wrong with City Market. This mixed-use development is a true gem and includes an eclectic array of shops, cafes, restaurants, bistros, bars, nightclubs and more. There's even a full-fledged art center with numerous working studios on the premises, so you can check out a lot of local art here too.
Pay a visit to this charming, 30-acre park, with its fountain that is an exact replica of the one in Paris' Place de la Concorde.
Traveling to Savannah
If you're coming to Savannah by car from the west, you'll most likely arrive via Interstate 16. From the north and south, most drivers arrive via Interstate 95. Several other major freeways and state routes provide easy access by car to the city too.
For air travelers, Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) is the most convenient choice. About half a dozen major airlines operate out of the airport and provide service to and from numerous major cities, including Detroit, Chicago, Atlanta, New York, Newark, Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth and Philadelphia. The airport offers numerous options for catching taxis and shuttles to the city.
Train & Bus
Savannah's Amtrak station is served by lines that operate from Miami to New York. There is a Greyhound bus station downtown.
Savannah has a humid, subtropical climate, with a coastal breeze that helps to temper what would otherwise be excessively high temperatures during the summer. The city only experiences freezing temperatures about 24 days per year, so you can probably leave your winter coat at home. It might be worthwhile bringing your umbrella between June and September, as this is when nearly half of the rain falls.
