Beaches and watersports galore define Siesta Key

Located just offshore from Sarasota along the picture-perfect white sand and turquoise water of the Gulf of Mexico, Siesta Key is a beach and nature lovers' paradise. This small barrier island is about eight miles long and offers travelers the laidback island lifestyle of a beach town. Siesta Key hotels are located near Bradenton, Gulfport, Venice and Tampa, Florida.

Things to see and do

Not surprisingly, Siesta Key has several beautiful beaches. Siesta Beach has been named the nation's top beach by famous coastal expert Professor Steven Leatherman. Crescent Beach is a great choice for seclusion and quiet relaxation, and Turtle Beach is perfect for snorkelers and shell seekers. Picnic tables, a playground and restrooms make this a nice spot for families and children. Boating enthusiasts will appreciate the boat ramp and ample space for trailer parking.

Beach activities and watersports are a given in this island atmosphere. Siesta Key Water Sports has jet ski and boat rentals, dolphin-watching tours, private boat charters and sunset cruises. For bicycles, scooters and kayak rentals, head to Siesta Sports Rentals, which also rents beach chairs, umbrellas and snorkel equipment.

Museums and nature

By visiting the South Florida Museum in Sarasota, visitors can experience three great attractions all under one roof. The Parker Manatee Aquarium and Bishop Planetarium are both located within the museum. The museum features exhibits on the region, spanning prehistoric to present times, while the planetarium offers a state-of-the-art domed theater and educational astronomy presentations. The aquarium serves as a rehabilitation facility for injured manatees before they can be released back into the wild.

You can't get much more authentic Floridian than a trip to the Mixon Fruit Farm in Bradenton, which has been growing, selling and shipping citrus fruit since 1939. Ride the Orange Blossom Express tram through the citrus groves and sample freshly squeezed orange and grapefruit juice. The farm also provides land and shelter for injured animals, birds and reptiles. When able, the animals are released back into the wild. The farm offers wildlife tours to promote education and respect for wildlife.
