What travelers to Key West are saying

We lived in Key West from (1994-1997) and our youngest son was born there (Saltwater Conch) so it will always hold a special place in our hearts. We still have good friends we enjoy seeing and it's like we never left. So, I have few bad things to say about Key West. As far as advice - if you fly in and out there is no need to rent a car. Parking is difficuly and you can easily do without. The crowds seem to have increased so for those looking to really get away that will be a little harder to do but still possible. The snorkelling, diving, fishing are still excellent and a must do - the Rum and Reggae cruises are highly recommended. Of course Mallory Square and the sunset celebration are a must. The history buff will be satisfied by Mel Fishers Museum, the Shipwreck Museum, and the Forts on the island. Take the Conch Train first thing to get to see most of the island and plan your day. Otherwise, I could go on and one about the great food and drink - you have to have a Grouper sandwich at BO's Fishwagon, Cerviche Bar at Turtle Kraals is outstanding, and the Lobster Roll at the Clam Shack (see Triple D) to name just a few. Otherwise, RELAX and enjoy come cocktails and the open air establishments along Duval - great live music at numerous locations all day and night. Some folks are disappointed but I have no idea why, again, RELAX and enjoy.

One of the many Trolleys is a must Key West has a lot if history. Most of the stops will cost money if you choose to get off and explore.. You get a deal if you buy tickets from the tour that your riding we rode with old town trolleys the driver was very entertaining. All the rest have live music .. Sloppy Joes was a good choice we also enjoyed Jimmy Bs margaritaville.. Many places for snorkeling and kayaking the cheapest was in key largo on the way to the keys John Pennekamp it was half the price for kayaking than in key west.. We also did and airboat ride in the Everglades on our way home Coopertown was the cheapest a little run down but it added to the experience and they were very good we saw 50-70 gators on the ride.. Not to mention they had a short show before the ride.. I would recommend

If you want a great tan, KW is the place to be. My husband and I went parasailing. The two watersport guys were excellent mates. They really made our flight fun. As far as transportation, we took the trolley around town (excellent conductors) and when we needed to get to specific places quickly, we took the taxi. They have flat rates for everywhere one goes on the island. We enjoyed lunch at Caroline's Café where the Jambalaya is awesome (spicy). The best restaurant was Charlie Mac's where we enjoyed delicious BBQ. Awesome Food!!!

Get inspired in relaxing Key West, Florida

Made famous in song and spirit by the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams and Jimmy Buffett, Key West offers travelers a tropical Caribbean vibe. Key West is part of Monroe County, yet it feels like a million miles away from the mainland with its self-professed status of Conch Republic and its laidback attitude, with a vibrant collection of artists, musicians and entertainment options.

Things to see and do

Key West beaches

There are small, manmade beaches scattered around calm waters, where you can wade into the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico. Smathers Beach is a half mile of manmade coast that is perfect for a sunrise snapshot. Concession stands, watersports rentals and available restrooms make this a nice spot for families with children.

The 87 acres of Fort Zachary Taylor State Park offer a beach, a historic fort, picnic tables and wonderful sunset views. Located within walking distance to restaurants on Duval Street, South Beach is a local favorite. The third longest barrier reef in the world—and America's only living coral reef—is located just offshore from the Florida Keys, ready and waiting for explorers.

Literature lovers should visit the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, and take a guided tour of the house that the Nobel Prize-winner lived in for more than 10 years. The Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, the Key West Shipwreck Museum, and the Key West Lighthouse are all great choices for fans of nautical history and antiques. The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservancy offers the fragrance of flowers and the fun of butterflies alighting on guests' shoulders.

Water sports

Take a jet-ski tour around the island, sail off on a catamaran for a day of snorkeling, or head out to Fort Jefferson Dry Tortugas State Park. Located about 70 miles west of Key West, Fort Jefferson is a great day trip for swimming, snorkeling or just relaxing on soft sand. Travelers can also take tours of the historic fort. If fishing is your thing, you need only walk along the docks for a bit before finding an offshore fishing charter or tour boat.

Special events

Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square

Held on the dock at Mallory Square, on the western side of the island, this event is a nightly carnival of jugglers, musicians, street artists and performers of all types. Once the sun sets, the nightlife continues onto the world-famous Duval Street where nightclubs, gourmet restaurants, and outdoor cafes keep the party going into the small hours of the morning.

Key West Food and Wine Festival

The Key West Food and Wine Festival makes its way onto the island in January. This delicious event covers six days of food demonstrations, music, dancing, wine tastings and themed parties.

Key West Lobsterfest

Lobsterfest takes place in August, and marks the opening of lobster season with street fairs, concerts, a lobster boil, Sunday brunch and the Duval Crawl, a nighttime trek to several bars along Duval Street. Participating bars include, among others, Coyote Ugly, the Hard Rock Café, Pincher's Crab Shack and the Sunset Tiki Bar.

Travel Information

Key West International Airport (EYW) and Marathon Airport (MTH) are excellent choices for those wanting to get to the Conch Republic as quickly as possible. A travel alternative is to fly into Miami International Airport (MIA), rent a car and cruise through the Keys, traveling across crystal clear water and through small fishing towns along the way.
