What travelers to Sanibel and Captiva Islands are saying

We love the gulf. We wanted a short beach vacation and Sanibel was terrific. We beached for 2 days and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Duke May 29, 2015
Not your typical resort area. Quiet beaches. Can bike entire 10 mile island on separate bike lanes.
Brock B. Sep 21, 2015
Kind of crowded, but excellent beaches.

Find Floridian serenity on Sanibel and Captiva Islands

Connected to Fort Myers by a causeway, Sanibel and Captiva Islands stretch between Pine Island Sound on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. Banyan trees, tropical flowers and quaint cafes give these Florida islands an old-fashioned ambiance. Roam the palm-shaded Lighthouse Beach, scan the horizon for waders at J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, or snorkel for tropical wonders beneath the waves. Sanibel and Captiva Islands hotels throw you right in the midst of a good old Gulf Coast vacation.

Things to see and do

Beaches and bikes

Sanibel and Captiva Islands are known for their seashell-strewn shores. In fact, nearly 250 different kinds of shells can be found here. The calm and warm turquoise water of the Gulf of Mexico is perfect for families and small children.

Lighthouse Beach and Fishing Pier, located on the eastern tip of Sanibel Island, wrap around to the sound side and feature a boardwalk nature trail through the wetlands. Captiva Beach is a great spot for gorgeous sunset views. Rent bicycles and pedal across hard-packed sand, or travel down more than 22 miles of bike paths.

Water sports

Charter an offshore fishing excursion to catch snapper, cobia and grouper, or embark on a leisurely boat tour around the island. As an added bonus, you just might see dolphins playing in the boat's wake.

J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge encompasses nearly 6,400 acres that include mangrove forests, marshes and sea grass beds. The area is known for its migratory bird population as well as alligators and other native Florida wildlife. Visitors can drive, walk or bicycle through the refuge.

Best time to stay

Escape the chill of those colder locales by flying off to the Fort Myers area of Sanibel and Captiva Islands. The warm currents and sea breezes of the Gulf of Mexico make this a year-round destination for snowbirds, family vacations and spring break travelers, with temperatures never dipping far below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Where to stay

Most hotels are located on Sanibel Island, the larger, southern portion of the island chain. Stay central, to the west of Gulfside Beach, if you want quick access to the wildlife refuge and the green bays of Tarpon and Sanibel Bayou directly north. There are also a cluster of beachfront inns and luxury hotels along East Gulf Drive towards the very eastern tip of the isle, where the lighthouse looks over to the mainland. Prices run from around $100 a night to almost $300 for a private ocean view resort. You'll also find a few accommodations near to Captiva Beach in Captiva Island, where you can hop across to North Captiva by ferry.

Special events

Fort Myers Beach Shrimp Festival

Presented by the Fort Myers Beach Lions, the Fort Myers Beach Shrimp Festival offers all the fun of parades, arts and crafts vendors, and lots of fresh Gulf Coast shrimp. The Shrimp Festival Queen is crowned at this March event.

Fort Myers Beach Offshore Grand Prix

The week-long charity event known as the Fort Myers Beach Offshore Grand Prix climaxes with two days of offshore racing. During the week, there are block parties, motorcycle poker runs, concerts and a parade.

Sanibel and Captiva Islands Luminary Festival

Held in December, businesses, residents and visitors ring in the holiday season with the Sanibel and Captiva Islands Luminary Festival. A beautiful path of decorated trees and twinkling lights make the islands sparkle and shine as guests enjoy music, shopping and a holiday golf cart parade. You might even see Santa himself making a stop at the local galleries and shops.

Taste of the Islands

Taste of the Islands, held in November, is a celebration of community spirit and local cuisine. Local restaurants compete to win top honors from an esteemed panel of judges, making this a great way to find a new favorite restaurant. The event was created to raise awareness and funds for the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife.
