What travelers to Dupont Circle are saying

Washington doesn't disappoint however, it was pretty crowded with tourists. The Capitol was a disappointment since the rotunda is under construction. The Library of Congress- spectacular!
Allison S. Aug 17, 2015
I used to live there. Nothing new under the sun (or snow in this case). Just another business trip.
Stephen R. Mar 7, 2015
So much to do, but avoid the summer heat and humidity if you can.

Explore the capital at Dupont Circle, Washington

An unassuming section of the nation's capital, Dupont Circle is one of those hidden treasures that contains some of the city's most exciting promises. Unlike some of the more traveled districts, this historic area is quiet and accessible. In addition to being a cool place to simply walk around, it's full of neat little shops, bars and eateries that cater to visitors who just want to experience the city at their own pace.

Things to see and do

Sampling the local flavor

Like many D.C. neighborhoods that revolve around classic traffic circles, Dupont Circle is home to a nice park of the same name. The park is the perfect starting point for everything from excursions to one of the infamous winter snowball fights that draw hundreds, and its close proximity to Dupont Circle hotels makes it a natural gathering point for the city's visitors as well as residents. Glen's Garden Market is a daily occasion no matter what the weather is like, so be sure to stop here and pick up something tasty and fresh to recharge yourself before exploring.

Viewing history up close

The other benefit of starting your tour in this iconic block is that it's encircled by some of the best examples of centuries-old architecture in the city, including the traditional Strivers' Section on 16th Street and row houses dating back to the 1800s. Dupont Circle is also home to the few surviving examples of the mansions that senators used to live in, and you will find no small number of active foreign embassies within easy walking distance.

Visiting national landmarks

Dupont Circle is conveniently close to Metro station, where you can pick up the Red Line to head straight to the National Zoo only one stop away. Or instead, travel in the other direction towards Metro Center to hook up with lines to the National Mall, the White House and other seats of power. Dupont Circle hotels make great central points for people who want to access all four quadrants of the city, as well as Virginia and Maryland. The train is the easiest way to get around and beat the daily rush, but those who want to travel aboveground also enjoy bicycle rickshaw rides at almost all hours.

Culture lovers should be sure to visit the Phillips Collection. Although the Smithsonian museums get more billing, the Phillips was the first modern art museum in the country, and it's a great place to see some rare pieces by Whistler, Picasso, O'Keeffe and Monet.

When to visit

Dupont Circle caters to travelers year-round and there's generally something going on no matter when you decide to check in. For instance, the Capital Pride festival and parade in June and the High Heel Race in October are both insanely popular scheduled events, but at any other time, you may be treated to an impromptu maypole dance in the park, participate in a huge tug-of-war or get to watch a political rally from your hotel window.

Where to stay

A concentrated and bustling area, there are a number of mid-to-high price Dupont hotels to accommodate visitors. Major events like Independence Day celebrations, presidential inaugurations and spring's Cherry Blossom Festival tend to draw larger crowds and higher rates.

Dupont Circle Hotel

Fresh and contemporary, the Dupont Circle Hotel is in the heart of the area, within walking distance of pretty much everything. The Bar Dupont is a great place to treat yourself to a well-deserved cocktail.

Traveling to Dupont Circle

Many visitors fly straight into Reagan International Airport and ride the Metro or a get a cab for the three miles north journey into Dupont Circle. You can also arrive via Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Virginia; although it's a bit further out, this is a good way to take in more of the areas surrounding the city itself.
