Yes, the neighborhood is a little dodgy (but incredibly convenient: just a couple of blocks from the Powell BART and the heart of downtown SF).....but the hotel itself is clean, pleasant, fun to be in (the movie theme is very tastefully and effectively handled)....the staff helpful and polite.....my room was spacious (too often, older, center city hotels have rooms the size of closets).....the price was right, as well.....all told, quite a find.....I'd like to stay there again!

This hotel is in a spot where it is easy to get everywhere. One negative is that it is not in a very lively area. There aren't too many restaurants, bars, shops etc immediately around the hotel, that's a negative in my opinion but not a deal breaker. Mel's diner is connected to the hotel, so you do have that option. We walked to Union Square (about a mile) and to Haight Ashbury (about 2.5 miles) from the hotel but there are also buses right outside the hotel door. The staff really makes this place, they are so helpful and accommodating. They gave us restaurant tips, printed something for us, transportation tips, etc. And for a free breakfast, its pretty darn good! We ate it early on before a nice brunch out. You have to eat breakfast out in San Fran, they do brunch very well in this city. The hotel itself is old (in a good way, lots of history, etc) and cute. The rooms are small but clean and comfortable. I will stay here again when I return to SF and I would recommend it to others.

This hotel is great. My friend and I stayed there for vacation. Hotel is very nice and clean. the people are helpful and are always willing to help with anything. It's in the best location of union square, with alot of shopping and eating. The cable car starts a block away and it takes you to the wharf. Also it has a stop for tour buses at union square which is two blocks from it. The only thing is the room with one bed is very small ask for two bed room.

Had just one night in SF with the gf, and decided to try this place out. Great hotel. Looks and feels very high class, with a little bit of that old school tradition to it. Location was terrific, we were either a short walk or a short taxi ride to plenty of restaurants or clubs/bars. The room was terrific - great, comfortable king bed and a very warm vibe in the room overall (which was perfect for a December weekend). Place is usually pretty expensive, but the deal through here made it feel ilke a real steal. Would be happy to stay here again in the future.

Historic grandeur overlooking the Golden Gate City This Nob Hill mainstay, dating back to 1907, blends contemporary and historic tastes. Decorative touches such as marble floors and Corinthian columns evoke turn-of-the-century grandeur, while modern conveniences such as high-speed Internet and a full-service fitness center and spa keep travelers grounded in the present. Three well-regarded restaurants offer options for every meal, and the city's oldest Tiki bar provides a break from the formality of the hotel. Rooms vary in size (325-425 square feet; up to 6,000 for suites), but all come with flat-screen televisions, Frette luxury linens, MP3 docking stations and Miller Harris toiletries. Many also offer stunning views of San Francisco Bay, while Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access are available in all (fees apply). Features The hotel has received numerous awards, including the AAA Four Diamond Award and ExxonMobil Four Star Award. Marble floors and Corinthian columns trimmed in gold accentuate the ornate Main Lobby. This area, spruced up in 1999, transports guests back to 1907, when the hotel opened. It may also transport TV fans back to the 1980s: Aaron Spelling's "Hotel" series was shot here. The United Nations Charter was drafted in the hotel, and even the concierge service is historic. Beautiful location, and great staff. Everyone was very attentive and polite. The room was very good sized (two queens) and the bathroom and closet could have been rooms by themselves! The only drawback is that the hotel is on top of a steep hill so the walk to it is quite a workout. Taking the cable car is a great option b/c it stops right in front of the hotel.

This was a fantastic trip! The hotel is beautiful and the beds heavenly! It was a quick weekend trip so my daughter could audition for a graduate school program for Opera performance. The location to the music studio was perfect. and we had a blast exploring S.F. The ONLY downside for me was NO coffee maker in the room. I had expected that complimentary coffee would be a no brainer at such a nice hotel. I felt nickel and dimed having to pay $8 for a cup of coffee in my room.

We stayed in Petite Queen for 4 nights over the New Year's holidays. Front desk staff were helpful and polite, the room was clean and cozy, and the location was convenient - lots of dining options, mini-markets and coffee shops in the area. I was a little worried about the neighborhood -some reviews suggested it's somewhat sketchy, but it's simply not true. You might have a homeless guy ask you for some change and a cigarette, but that's it. We never felt threatened or uncomfortable on the street even after dark. It is within walking distance of Chinatown (20mins), Japantown (20 mins), Moma (20 mins), Downtown (20 mins) and Fisherman's Warf (45 mins). If you want to explore the city on foot, get a feel for San Francisco Atmosphere and have a room with a unique romantic feel - Vertigo is for you. Here are some things to be prepared for: Valet Parking will cost you $35 a day with unlimited in/out privileges. You have to call 30-40 minutes in advance to have your car ready. Street parking is tough, but doable after a day or two of figuring it out. Just read ALL the street signs and learn meter operation hours. There are also 2 street public garages in the area. Using those can save you about $15 a day. Hotel is located in a historic building, so with charm come little inconveniences-thin doors (be very quiet in the hallways), older tubs and elevator. Overall we really enjoyed our stay:it felt more like an apartment in the city than a hotel, and it is a great way to travel.

Description
Green boutique Nob Hill hotel blends history and eco-consciousnessGreen is the reality at the Hotel Carlton, a Joie de Vivre property. The Nob Hill hotel is certified by the city of San Francisco as a green business, is one of the few hotels in town to have solar panels, and was the first hotel in the U.S. to receive the LEED EB O&M distinction. The structure itself is historic, and dates back to the early 1900s. Inside, the vibe is international, as walls are adorned with art photos from the American Himalayan Foundation. Highlights Located mere blocks from City Hall and the Federal BuildingComplimentary nightly wine hour; free guided tour of the cityOn-site restaurant Saha offers Arabic fusion cuisine Rooms The majority of the Carlton's rooms offer guests expansive, unobstructed city views (a rarity in this district of San Francisco) because the hotel isn't flanked by adjoining buildings. Each of the 160 rooms (and the lone suite) includes an in-room laptop safe, a ceiling fan, and a CD player that is MP3 compatible. Decor in these rooms is soft; soothing tones of light blue and cream are punctuated by touches of glowing colors, such as saffron, Oriental red and a cheerful persimmon. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available. Pets are welcome (fees apply). Features Without question, the Hotel Carlton's attention to conservation is a major accomplishment. Nearly one quarter of the hotel's energy is generated by the rooftop solar panel installation.   All guests are invited to a complimentary wine hour every night, and are entitled to a complimentary tour of the city with a Golden Gate Greeter (a volunteer local expert). Also complimentary: morning towncar service to the Financial District, and shuttle service to and from the San Francisco Airport. The hotel Hotel Carlton offers adjoining rooms, ideal for families.   Saha offer an eclectic blend of Yemenese and Californian cuisines. The restaurant also features an old-world Chinese "scholar's table" that seats eight, bringing friends and strangers together to share the adventures of the day. The restaurant is only open for breakfast and dinner. We walked to Union Square and Chinatown easily. Access to cable cars fo Fisherman's Wharf were convenient. We had our car and the ride to Golden Gate Park was quick and simple. Hotel served wine in the late afternoon and it was fun to meet people from Australia and The Netherlands. As above, it's a good place to stay, an old but well kept hotel.

We had a corner room on the 17th floor, and the views were fantastic! While there was some street noise, and the AC was a bit loud, these did not keep us awake. The location of the hotel could not be better--across from Nordstrom's and near the Powell St. station, cablecar turnaround, and tourist information center. The staff was welcoming and helpful. The hotel has a grab-and-go continental breakfast (which you pay for) that is very convenient.

Modern Attractive Decor/SF Airport Locale

  • CarmelKidz
  • Jan 12, 2012
Excellent hotel for staying close to SF airport. The decor is modern/updated on a par with 4 star hotels. Added plus is that the windows open (San Francisco area climate is usually lovely/moderate, and fresh air from a crack in the window is very nice in this area). Parking is close in, another plus. Very easy on and off the freeway north to San Francisco or points south. Did not use breakfast or other food services so cannot rate. Had to wait over 10 minutes to check out in morning (no one at counter), so hotel could improve on that.

Luxury meets history, vintage meets modern at Theater District hotel The Hotel Whitcomb has a place in San Francisco history like no other: Following the 1906 earthquake, the building actually served as City Hall. The majestic Theater District property still looks a lot like it did back then, with crystal chandeliers, Tiffany glass and Italian marble columns and floors. Made-to-look-old furniture highlights rooms upstairs, though modern conveniences abound as well. The on-site Market Street Grill serves up basic American fare. Highlights Historical spot -- the hotel once served as San Francisco's City HallLocated in the Theater District, across Market Street from the Orpheum TheaterOrnate preserved lobbyDine on classic American fare at The Market Street Grill Rooms High ceilings are common in the Whitcomb's 447 guest rooms and 12 suites. Furniture in these rooms has been specially crafted so it looks old. Accommodations come standard with modern conveniences as well, including flat-screen televisions, ironing boards and spacious workstations. Many also offer stunning views of San Francisco Bay, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. The Sunny Jim Suite also includes a wet bar and a dining area. Features Marble floors, polished brass fixtures, Tiffany glass and fresh flowers accentuate the ornate Main Lobby. This area transports guests back to the turn of the 20th Century, when the building briefly served as City Hall. It became a hotel in 1916. It's also a great place to enjoy a coffee and read a complimentary newspaper. Aside from the prehistoric elevator and the bare bones amenities (even though they do serve you a free breakfast - very basic but you can eat what you like as much as you want) there was very little wrong with my stay. Just don't expect a pool or a fitness center. The rooms were comfortable (if a bit spartan) and the housekeeping and maintenance staff kept everything clean and in proper order. The front desk staff was also pleasant, and answered a lot of my questions. Overall if you're young and just starting out, like me, or don't need a lot of frills this boutique hotel is a good value for your buck and is just off the popular Union Square area near the Muni bus system and the BART train systems that take you pretty much anywhere.

great hotel, awkward to walk alone at night

  • Dec 11, 2011
the hotel was great, good beds, clean, good and healthy breakfast with fresh fruit and lettuce, tomato, cucumber, two types of cheese, meats, waffels, cereals, etc. There are a lot of homeless people in the first few blocks of Ellis street. As a woman I felt awkard walking home alone at night, but with a friend it was fine. It didn't feel hostile at all, just outnumbered. If you catch a cab home a night (quite cheap) or avoid these first few blocks by taking Geary street and then Hyde or Larkin to the hotel, it's fine.

I would have given this 4 stars, but the room needed some upgrades. BED- was by far the best! the TV could not get s signal, rug and floor and bathroom were clean, but it just lacked the boutique-y flare that comes with that cute overall special feel. It was great in terms of location, as I was visiting friends that lived a few blocks away and the bars we visited were all within walking distance, which at the end of the nite was a lifesaver considering we could just walk back to our hotel after many drinks and it was totally fine.

My stay in SF was for business. The location was good for my commute to the financial district. The location is close to all of the major shopping retailers, BART, Chinatown, restaurants, street cars and the trolley. My room was on the top floor of the hotel so I did not hear any noise from the street and I never heard anything through the walls of adjacent rooms. The only complaint I had with the room was that there wasn't a lot of water pressure when taking a shower. Other wise the free wireless internet and a clean room every day after coming back from a long day of work was welcoming. I did not take advantage of any other amenities. The next time I travel to SF I am going to look for a hotel that includes a fitness center as this hotel does not have one but offers a daily pass to a nearby fitness center for 3 lincolns, each visit.

This is a sweet little gem in the heart of San Francisco. The decor and ambiance are perfectly up my alley. The bathroom was TINY though....like tiny in a way that the faucet is even too big for the tiny little sink. But seriously, if you're looking for top notch in luxury, you are also willing to pay a lot more for a room.....basically, with Hotel Frank, you get a bit more than you pay for....but remember, this is not a Four Seasons. Regardless, I love that Hotel Frank is not stuffy, I LOVED the staff (Yay Ronnie!!)... Remember that you are paying an additional $30 a day for Valet parking (the norm in San Fran), just make sure that you leave no valuables in your car, as there were strange problems with our car when we got it back from a three day stint in Valet parking. Nothing went missing, thank goodness, but the trunk was broken and the seats and windows were adjusted (why must we adjust the passenger seat to park a car 5 blocks away, I wonder?). The ipods were disconnected and someone had changed the radio to the "Playboy" channel and had adjusted the air conditioning to a wonderful 58 degrees. During winter. I don't want to know what happened in our car while it was in the care of these people, but all I know is that they were happy to refund. And that makes me happy. I'll update as soon as the refund goes through.

Basically chose this place due to its proximity to north beach and price. It's within walking distance to the north beach bars. Only bad part was hat it was right in the middle of china town and we were here during Chinese New Years. So drums and parades woke us up at 8am even though we were on the 16th floor.

I was in town for a conference and didn't want to stay at one of the official hotels, because they were expensive and charged extra for things like wi-fi. The Powell Hotel is by no means posh, but it had free internet, breakfast, and weekday happy hour (quite a surprise), and it's literally steps away from the BART station. It's just what I was looking for.

Location and staff were really great in this little hotel on Columbus. Staff was very helpful, greeted you by name and did lots of little things to make the visit personal. Location is so close to some of the best food in SF. Really. While the rooms are VERY small, they seem to make up for it in service.

Nice NYE Vacation--Lousy Concierge

  • Chefparty
  • Jan 2, 2012
We came in for NYE weekend, and were very happy with the front desk, room, liked the parking being onsite. Beds very comfy and got a great night's sleep each night. One thumbs down aspect that I have to mention--the "concierge" in the gift shop...although very eager to help, had NO IDEA about nightlife for NYE. C'mon, folks, if you are going to be SOLD OUT for NYE, dontcha think you should have concierge services that are prepared? Spent WAYYYY too long over 2 days with them browsing Google with slow internet for ideas. One gal had lived in SF all her life and had never ever gone to a club, had to call her boss on her cellphone to ask what to look up on the internet. Gave us the wrong address to first club and we ended up in the bad part of town. Like I said, LOUSY concierge. What a joke. In the end, we did our own research and found our own way. Hotel room good overall.

Worst hotel I've ever stayed in.

  • jblat1
  • Nov 18, 2011
It pains me to say this because the people that work here are beyond pleasant and accommodating. That being said, I was mortified with my stay! First impression was it was filthy from the outside. Trash all along the street and NOT in a safe area. This was my first time to SF, so I didn't know any better. Outside the hotel, a man was 'cooking' his heroine on a spoon and about to inject himself. Inside, there aren't any glasses to drink, no way to turn down or control the temp in the room, and raw sewage backed up from the bath. Do yourself a favor and DON'T STAY HERE!

We arrived at 9:30 am and told us to come back at 2:30 pm and our room will be ready. So we left our bags there and left to go eat we arrived back at 3:30 pm and still our room wasn't ready and told us he was going to have to put a blow up bed because he only had one bed when we specifically asked for two. We were already tired and wanted to go to our room and rest for a while then go back to where we were going. So we decided to just leave that hotel and try to find another. We didn't even stay here and my credit card was already charged before we even got there and it said it was a three star hotel online when it obviously was not it was in a ugly area and we were very upset when we got there and nothing was ready.

Had A Great Time

A few friends decided we wanted to go to San Fran for a weekend. We have never been and I was looking for a hotel that was reasonably priced and close to union square. There was 4 of us that went. We are a younger crowd, 25-27 years old and looking for a good time. The chilled shots of Tequila at check in was a bonus! I believe the gentleman that checked us in was named Steven, want to give him big kudos! He was awesome! We spoke to him every time we passed him in the lobby. He was very friendly, always asked us about our days and nights out. He provided us great suggestions and was always smiling. He made us feel very welcomed from day 1 and through the trip. Our room was small but nice. We booked a 2 room suit, one king bed and one queen. Although the room was not huge it was fine for us. TVs in each room was nice, the painting on the ceiling and "Eagles" lyrics on the wall was nice also. The beds where super comfortable also. The area was nice also, very short walk to union square. We stayed out pretty late every night and always walked back to the hotel, we always felt safe. The Jones bar next door as a great outside area to have drinks and a bite to eat. We also enjoyed High Tide bar across the street, it was a dive bar with friendly bartenders. The hotel also had complimentary wine and cheese everyday. We enjoyed it our 2nd day there, it was a nice touch. Overall we enjoyed our stay at the hotel and would recommend it to others. Good time.
