Historic grandeur overlooking the Golden Gate City This Nob Hill mainstay, dating back to 1907, blends contemporary and historic tastes. Decorative touches such as marble floors and Corinthian columns evoke turn-of-the-century grandeur, while modern conveniences such as high-speed Internet and a full-service fitness center and spa keep travelers grounded in the present. Three well-regarded restaurants offer options for every meal, and the city's oldest Tiki bar provides a break from the formality of the hotel. HighlightsThe hilltop location delivers panoramic and breathtaking views of San Francisco BayHop on any one of the city's cable cars right out frontUnion Square shopping is only a four-block walk from the hotel Rooms Accommodations -- 591 rooms, 62 of them suites -- span two buildings: the original, circa-1907 structure and a tower built in the 1960s. Rooms vary in size (325-425 square feet; up to 6,000 for suites), but all come with flat-screen televisions, Frette luxury linens, MP3 docking stations and Miller Harris toiletries. Many also offer stunning views of San Francisco Bay, while Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access are available in all (fees apply). Features The hotel has received numerous awards, including the AAA Four Diamond Award and ExxonMobil Four Star Award. Marble floors and Corinthian columns trimmed in gold accentuate the ornate Main Lobby. This area, spruced up in 1999, transports guests back to 1907, when the hotel opened. It may also transport TV fans back to the 1980s: Aaron Spelling's "Hotel" series was shot here. The United Nations Charter was drafted in the hotel, and even the concierge service is historic. Dating back to 1973, it's the first formal concierge desk in the U.S. All guests have access (fees apply) to the on-site Club One at Nob Hill Health Club, a full-service facility with spa and fitness center. Grab a Mai-Tai at the Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar, a kitschy-but-lovable Tiki lounge on the site of an old (circa-1920s) indoor pool. Very nice hotel, not the best location
- CJ2011
- May 17, 2012
We stayed in the tower to have the newer bathrooms with the separate shower. The bathroom toiletries were good quality, so they are worth trying! It was one of the most comfortable beds I have been in. We got a smoking room since it was much cheaper, and there was a strong smell when we got on the floor, but the room wasn't too bad. It would have been better if the windows opened and we could air it out, though. We did a LOT of walking up & down the hills, so if you are out of shape you will have to rely heavily on the cable cars to get around. The location was nice because it was centrally located, but it seemed a little far from everything. Overall a nice hotel and a very comfortable stay!

Beautiful location, and great staff. Everyone was very attentive and polite. The room was very good sized (two queens) and the bathroom and closet could have been rooms by themselves! The only drawback is that the hotel is on top of a steep hill so the walk to it is quite a workout. Taking the cable car is a great option b/c it stops right in front of the hotel.

Great experience at this hotel. Lovely lobby; professional, friendly, and accomodating staff; free apples at the front desk. Enjoyed the lounge on the top floor; romantic and great view of SF. Room very large, clean and comfortable for two with great view of downtown SF. Not too bad of a walk to Chinatown, Financial District, and Fisherman's Wharf (I walked to all three and back). Price for overnight parking quite steep (eek!). Would come back.

Wife and I stayed one night. 2 blocks from Ghirardelli and 2 blocks from Embarcadera Blvd. Very convenient to the wharf. I like to jog in the morning. The jogging trail along the bay that runs through all the wharf activities is 2 blocks away. Rooms were comfortable. Mattress a little hard but pillows are sleeper friendly. We got a late check out at 1PM without much problem. We were actually out of the room by 1:30PM. Front desk was accommodating although our requests were minimal. Parking is in garage under hotel. Very convenient but the cost was $47/day. Painful but worth it given the other parking options in the area. You can come and go from the garage all you want without additional charge until 6PM the next evening. Views from the rooms to the bay are obstructed by buildings but we were so close to the wharf area, we didn't mind. All in all we didn't have any negative experiences from our stay. That's how I gauge it.

I was in SF for the weekend extending a business trip, alone and it was lovely. Comfortable furnishings, great shower, good room (small but not too much that it mattered to me at all - and I had 2 large bags and 1 large suitcase). And perfect location by the water, near the Ferry Building (and all its wonderful coffee, ice cream, gourmet delights) and easy transport options.
Staff were helpful and the evening wine and cookies were both a welcome sight.
Thanks! Minimal fuss, room definitely up to scratch.

Aside from the prehistoric elevator and the bare bones amenities (even though they do serve you a free breakfast - very basic but you can eat what you like as much as you want) there was very little wrong with my stay. Just don't expect a pool or a fitness center.
The rooms were comfortable (if a bit spartan) and the housekeeping and maintenance staff kept everything clean and in proper order. The front desk staff was also pleasant, and answered a lot of my questions.
Overall if you're young and just starting out, like me, or don't need a lot of frills this boutique hotel is a good value for your buck and is just off the popular Union Square area near the Muni bus system and the BART train systems that take you pretty much anywhere.

Description
Green boutique Nob Hill hotel blends history and eco-consciousnessGreen is the reality at the Hotel Carlton, a Joie de Vivre property. The Nob Hill hotel is certified by the city of San Francisco as a green business, is one of the few hotels in town to have solar panels, and was the first hotel in the U.S. to receive the LEED EB O&M distinction. The structure itself is historic, and dates back to the early 1900s. Inside, the vibe is international, as walls are adorned with art photos from the American Himalayan Foundation. Highlights Located mere blocks from City Hall and the Federal BuildingComplimentary nightly wine hour; free guided tour of the cityOn-site restaurant Saha offers Arabic fusion cuisine Rooms The majority of the Carlton's rooms offer guests expansive, unobstructed city views (a rarity in this district of San Francisco) because the hotel isn't flanked by adjoining buildings. Each of the 160 rooms (and the lone suite) includes an in-room laptop safe, a ceiling fan, and a CD player that is MP3 compatible. Decor in these rooms is soft; soothing tones of light blue and cream are punctuated by touches of glowing colors, such as saffron, Oriental red and a cheerful persimmon. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available. Pets are welcome (fees apply). Features Without question, the Hotel Carlton's attention to conservation is a major accomplishment. Nearly one quarter of the hotel's energy is generated by the rooftop solar panel installation. All guests are invited to a complimentary wine hour every night, and are entitled to a complimentary tour of the city with a Golden Gate Greeter (a volunteer local expert). Also complimentary: morning towncar service to the Financial District, and shuttle service to and from the San Francisco Airport. The hotel Hotel Carlton offers adjoining rooms, ideal for families. Neighborhood is a bit rough (at night), not fit for small children, but if your a group of guys they won't bother you. Also the hotel shuttle is pretty reliable so you can use that.
Value was good, saved money and was pretty close to the Moscone Center for our convention. Rooms were a little smaller than expected.
I was disappointed that there was no pool.

We walked to all the major tourist sites. The hotel was located in a good area and an area where we parked the car and never drove again. It really was perfect.

First trip to San Francisco and as lone traveller

Loved this place! Country French feel with older furniture and no one bothers you, come and go as you please as concierge two doors down in sister hotel but they always helpful. Soft drinks and tea/coffee available all day and always fresh cookies and newspapers. Wine and nibbles in afternoon. Great breakfast with wide range to suit all and freshly prepped. I had a queen room with nice fireplace and well heated. No view from room and no widescreen tv but hey I came to SF to be by this lovely city by the bay and was not disappointed. The hotel is just up from union square and a couple of steep hills to climb or get cable which runs just two blocks down but sf is hilly so you expect this. Lots of diners and restaurants in a three block radius.

The hotel was very nice and at a teriffic location to local attractions. 3 blocks to cable cars, union square, china town. amenities included breakfast, supply of bottled water and soda, apples, cookies, and an evening wine and snack hour & half. Room was roomy with sitting chairs, fire place and many shelves for storage. Coffee provided in room. we would definitely stay here again and would recommend it for older couples with no kids. Floors are wooden, so early risers or night owls are audible. one loud nightclub at back of hotel had some howlers at 2AM on two nights. Otherwise with location of room, noise was at a minimum.

Bare Bones 1960's Motel

If you are in your 20's and artsy or a bargain seeking traveler, this slightly remodeled old motel might be right up your alley. As a middle-aged woman traveling on business, I would have checked out as soon as I arrived and found another hotel, but was too exhausted. I paid for a king bed and was given a tiny room with a double bed. Minimal effort has apparently been made to remodel in contemporary style (the bed was comfy and linens luxurious) but the room had a weird odor, the bathroom was the size of a broom closet with no counters, there was no full length mirror, and the only window was a sliding glass door onto the public balcony. There was no way to open the door for air a couple inches and lock it in that position for security, so I had to prop the luggage rack and a menu in so no one would enter my room at night. With all the young people staying there, it was thankfully quiet at night, and the location is great for a San Francisco hotel, accessible to all the sights and popular neighborhoods.
