Description
Historic grandeur overlooking the Golden Gate City This Nob Hill mainstay, dating back to 1907, blends contemporary and historic tastes. Decorative touches such as marble floors and Corinthian columns evoke turn-of-the-century grandeur, while modern conveniences such as high-speed Internet and a full-service fitness center and spa keep travelers grounded in the present. Three well-regarded restaurants offer options for every meal, and the city's oldest Tiki bar provides a break from the formality of the hotel. HighlightsThe hilltop location delivers panoramic and breathtaking views of San Francisco BayHop on any one of the city's cable cars right out frontUnion Square shopping is only a four-block walk from the hotel Rooms Accommodations -- 591 rooms, 62 of them suites -- span two buildings: the original, circa-1907 structure and a tower built in the 1960s. Rooms vary in size (325-425 square feet; up to 6,000 for suites), but all come with flat-screen televisions, Frette luxury linens, MP3 docking stations and Miller Harris toiletries. Many also offer stunning views of San Francisco Bay, while Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access are available in all (fees apply). Features The hotel has received numerous awards, including the AAA Four Diamond Award and ExxonMobil Four Star Award. Marble floors and Corinthian columns trimmed in gold accentuate the ornate Main Lobby. This area, spruced up in 1999, transports guests back to 1907, when the hotel opened. It may also transport TV fans back to the 1980s: Aaron Spelling's "Hotel" series was shot here. The United Nations Charter was drafted in the hotel, and even the concierge service is historic. Dating back to 1973, it's the first formal concierge desk in the U.S. All guests have access (fees apply) to the on-site Club One at Nob Hill Health Club, a full-service facility with spa and fitness center. Grab a Mai-Tai at the Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar, a kitschy-but-lovable Tiki lounge on the site of an old (circa-1920s) indoor pool. Very nice hotel, not the best location

  • CJ2011
  • May 17, 2012
We stayed in the tower to have the newer bathrooms with the separate shower. The bathroom toiletries were good quality, so they are worth trying! It was one of the most comfortable beds I have been in. We got a smoking room since it was much cheaper, and there was a strong smell when we got on the floor, but the room wasn't too bad. It would have been better if the windows opened and we could air it out, though. We did a LOT of walking up & down the hills, so if you are out of shape you will have to rely heavily on the cable cars to get around. The location was nice because it was centrally located, but it seemed a little far from everything. Overall a nice hotel and a very comfortable stay!

Beautiful location, and great staff. Everyone was very attentive and polite. The room was very good sized (two queens) and the bathroom and closet could have been rooms by themselves! The only drawback is that the hotel is on top of a steep hill so the walk to it is quite a workout. Taking the cable car is a great option b/c it stops right in front of the hotel.

Legendary Union Square hotel combines comfort, class The Westin St. Francis is the only hotel that actually sits on Union Square. The main building dates back to 1904, and many public areas boast the ornate columns, intricate woodwork and other design elements from this era. Perhaps the property's most famous feature is its Magenta Grandfather Clock, a popular place for people to meet. Today the property comprises two separate buildings: the historic main building and a newer tower. Three on-site restaurants offer a host of dining options. Highlights Historic grandfather clockOnly hotel situated right on Union SquareThree on-site restaurants, including the highly acclaimed Oak RoomSleep in signature Westin Heavenly beds Rooms Accommodations are spread across two buildings. Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access are available in all rooms (fees apply). Features The Westin St. Francis has received numerous awards, including the AAA Four-Diamond Award. The property opened in 1904 but was practically gutted due to damage during the earthquake of 1906. It reopened in 1907 and has been growing ever since. The new tower was completed in 1971. Great experience at this hotel. Lovely lobby; professional, friendly, and accomodating staff; free apples at the front desk. Enjoyed the lounge on the top floor; romantic and great view of SF. Room very large, clean and comfortable for two with great view of downtown SF. Not too bad of a walk to Chinatown, Financial District, and Fisherman's Wharf (I walked to all three and back). Price for overnight parking quite steep (eek!). Would come back.

Comfy downtown stay!

Had a very comfortable stay here. The staff were very friendly and the room was cosy and clean. I had no trouble with noise from other rooms or the street. I didn't go to the dinning room at all, but it always looked busy. Great location - right on the #38 bus line and close to the BART and cable cars.

More than your standard

  • GreysB
  • Dec 7, 2011
Aside from the prehistoric elevator and the bare bones amenities (even though they do serve you a free breakfast - very basic but you can eat what you like as much as you want) there was very little wrong with my stay. Just don't expect a pool or a fitness center. The rooms were comfortable (if a bit spartan) and the housekeeping and maintenance staff kept everything clean and in proper order. The front desk staff was also pleasant, and answered a lot of my questions. Overall if you're young and just starting out, like me, or don't need a lot of frills this boutique hotel is a good value for your buck and is just off the popular Union Square area near the Muni bus system and the BART train systems that take you pretty much anywhere.

The hotel was clean and the staff friendly and helpful. The room was stuffy though and the windows didn't have screens in them which made me a little nervous about keeping it wide open. Also the bed was located up against the window so I couldn't have it opened too far at night.

Description
Green boutique Nob Hill hotel blends history and eco-consciousnessGreen is the reality at the Hotel Carlton, a Joie de Vivre property. The Nob Hill hotel is certified by the city of San Francisco as a green business, is one of the few hotels in town to have solar panels, and was the first hotel in the U.S. to receive the LEED EB O&M distinction. The structure itself is historic, and dates back to the early 1900s. Inside, the vibe is international, as walls are adorned with art photos from the American Himalayan Foundation. Highlights Located mere blocks from City Hall and the Federal BuildingComplimentary nightly wine hour; free guided tour of the cityOn-site restaurant Saha offers Arabic fusion cuisine Rooms The majority of the Carlton's rooms offer guests expansive, unobstructed city views (a rarity in this district of San Francisco) because the hotel isn't flanked by adjoining buildings. Each of the 160 rooms (and the lone suite) includes an in-room laptop safe, a ceiling fan, and a CD player that is MP3 compatible. Decor in these rooms is soft; soothing tones of light blue and cream are punctuated by touches of glowing colors, such as saffron, Oriental red and a cheerful persimmon. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available. Pets are welcome (fees apply). Features Without question, the Hotel Carlton's attention to conservation is a major accomplishment. Nearly one quarter of the hotel's energy is generated by the rooftop solar panel installation.   All guests are invited to a complimentary wine hour every night, and are entitled to a complimentary tour of the city with a Golden Gate Greeter (a volunteer local expert). Also complimentary: morning towncar service to the Financial District, and shuttle service to and from the San Francisco Airport. The hotel Hotel Carlton offers adjoining rooms, ideal for families.   Saha offer an eclectic blend of Yemenese and Californian cuisines. The restaurant also features an old-world Chinese "scholar's table" that seats eight, bringing friends and strangers together to share the adventures of the day. The restaurant is only open for breakfast and dinner. Good Value, Bad Neighborhood, No Pool

  • SMASH1337
  • Mar 11, 2012
Neighborhood is a bit rough (at night), not fit for small children, but if your a group of guys they won't bother you. Also the hotel shuttle is pretty reliable so you can use that. Value was good, saved money and was pretty close to the Moscone Center for our convention. Rooms were a little smaller than expected. I was disappointed that there was no pool.

First trip to San Francisco and as lone traveller

  • Gary51
  • Mar 5, 2012
Loved this place! Country French feel with older furniture and no one bothers you, come and go as you please as concierge two doors down in sister hotel but they always helpful. Soft drinks and tea/coffee available all day and always fresh cookies and newspapers. Wine and nibbles in afternoon. Great breakfast with wide range to suit all and freshly prepped. I had a queen room with nice fireplace and well heated. No view from room and no widescreen tv but hey I came to SF to be by this lovely city by the bay and was not disappointed. The hotel is just up from union square and a couple of steep hills to climb or get cable which runs just two blocks down but sf is hilly so you expect this. Lots of diners and restaurants in a three block radius.

The hotel was very nice and at a teriffic location to local attractions. 3 blocks to cable cars, union square, china town. amenities included breakfast, supply of bottled water and soda, apples, cookies, and an evening wine and snack hour & half. Room was roomy with sitting chairs, fire place and many shelves for storage. Coffee provided in room. we would definitely stay here again and would recommend it for older couples with no kids. Floors are wooden, so early risers or night owls are audible. one loud nightclub at back of hotel had some howlers at 2AM on two nights. Otherwise with location of room, noise was at a minimum.

I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The location does not get any better. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms are small but to be expected at an older property such as this. The elevator was also small, slow and could only hold 4 people but so what?!?!? It was a 10 min walk from the Bart which made it even more attractive vs paying sky high prices at other nearby hotels. I would stay here again.

Our first trip to San Francisco was great and our accomadations were perfect. We were looking for something that was a little more quaint and certainly found it. The rooms are not large but very comfortable and clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. The rates were reasonable. Breakfast and evening wine and snacks included. Met many very nice people from around the world at the evening wine tasting. Location is good and very near many fine restaurants, but a pretty good walk to water. We are walkers so this didn't bother us. I highly recommend this Inn.

Description
Hip happenings in 1920s salon style hotel  Drawing on the literary and artistic past of San Francisco, the Hotel Rex, a Joie de Vivre Hotel takes its name from local poet Kenneth Rexroth, and his artist wife Andree Dutcher provided the inspiration for the new Californian/French fusion bistro Cafe Andree. Recently renovated, this cozy and original hotel blends elements of Provencal style with the feel of an authentic 1920s salon, and hosts jazz nights and literary events. Valet parking is available at Hotel Rex and pets are allowed (fees apply). 3 Reasons To Stay: Hosts regular cultural events Bang in the heart of vibrant shopping district Features paintings and murals by local artisans and a stunning collection of antique books and exotic objets d'art Hotel Rex, a Joie de Vivre Hotel Rooms  Seven floors and 94 guest rooms serve the Hotel Rex, a Joie de Vivre Hotel. The building itself is charming and further enhanced by its French inspired decor. Continuing the idiosyncratic house style, the bedrooms are in a striking but tasteful palette of ochre, burnt orange and burgundy, maintaining the Provencal theme, and checked or striped bedding and wall coverings. Individual objects crafted and hand-painted by local artists adorn the rooms. Rooms include beds that have pillow top mattresses, minibars, bathrobes and complimentary toiletries all provided, alongside cable television and pay-per-view movies. Smoking and nonsmoking rooms are available, and following the million-dollar renovation of Hotel Rex, they now provide wireless Internet access (free in communal areas). Great little spot right downtown

  • Chad S
  • Apr 7, 2012
Like most downtown hotels the rooms are small but the place has great character. The staff was very helpful and friendly and the location is great. Cablecar stop is right on the corner, BART is a short walk down Powell, and there are multiple ZipCar lots within a few blocks. Library bar is pretty cool and was busy every evening. Plenty of great spots to eat within a few blocks.

I love old, boutique hotels! The Rex is close to Chinatown, the theater, Union Square shopping, the financial district and convention hotels. The staff is friendly, the hotel policies are green and the bar is cozy. Guests receive a complementary glass of wine each evening and a $5 voucher for every day the maids don't have to clean your room. One of my San Francisco favorites.

This was a nice boutique hotel in a great location. The lobby was undergoing renovations (Feb 2012) but otherwise it was fine.

We had never been to San Fracisco and were happy to see this hotel was in a perfect location to sightsee. You are very close to everything. The accommodations are modest but clean. I would stay at this hotel again.

Description
The Andrews Hotel is a charming, European-style hotel centrally located in San Francisco's renowned theater and shopping districts. Our small size -- just 48 guestrooms -- allows our friendly and courteous front desk staff to give you individual attention. Citysearch Voted the Andrews hotel 'Best hotel staff' 2006. The building at 624 Post Street was completed in 1905 just before the great earthquake on April 18, 1906. Because it was built as a Class a structure, completely supported by a steel frame, it suffered little damage. However, the fire that engulfed the city after the quake did some damage to the lobby and restaurant. After being repaired the following November for $38,000, the building assumed its planned role as the Sultan Turkish Baths, a gentlemen's bath and relaxation establishment. The large electric sign on the roof announced its arrival on Post Street. As a full service business, the Sultan Baths featured a restaurant on the ground floor. The next level housed a salt-water plunge, tiled hot room, and a rubbing room. On the third floor one could find a barber, chiropodist, and a bar and lounge. The fourth and fifth floors featured small sleeping rooms and a steam room. Finally, on floors six and seven, one could rent one of several small apartments, each containing a bedroom and a parlor. Rumor has it that, at one time, the establishment had a rather unsavory reputation. Thank you for choosing the Andrews hotel for your visit to San Francisco. For the comfort and security of all hotel guests on New Year's Eve, parties or excessive noise will not be allowed in our guestrooms. Please be advised that non-registered guests will not be permitted beyond the lobby. Additional guests will not be added to the reservation at time of check-in. You'll be asked to stop by the reception desk to obtain a security bracelet before leaving for the evening (one bracelet per registered guest). Our Staff will be on duty to assist you for the evening. Only guests with bracelets will be allowed access to the guest elevators and the guestrooms; there will be no exceptions. Please note that once the bracelet is on, it can only be removed by cutting it off. We strongly suggest that you do not plan on using your vehicle for New Year's Eve. Due to the holiday, we are expecting traffic gridlock. If you choose to utilize your in-and-out valet privileges, a minimum of one-hour notification will be required. Parking will be available only for registered guests at $38.00 on New Year's Eve and $33.00 on all other nights. Parking is subject to 15.5% parking tax. On New Year's Eve, Fino Ristorante will be serving dinner with their regular menu from 5:00pm to 10:00pm. On New Year's Day, Fino's will be closed. The front desk staff will be happy to assist with New Year's Day dinner reservations at other restaurants. The staff and management of The Andrews Hotel wish you a safe and happy New Year.

I'd go back

This hotel had a wonderful overall atmosphere, and delivered on every promise made on the website. The continental breakfast included great fresh pastries, fresh fruit, orange juice, and hot coffee. Overall much better spread that I would have expected. In addition the free happy hour drinks were generous, and the staff was always helpful. The room was clean as well. The biggest drawbacks were the small size of the room, and the noise. It was never extremely loud, but the walls were thin, so you could easily hear other guests coming and going.

Quaint, homey, slightly funky

  • Colonel Legno

Two blocks off Union Square, this old (pre-earthquake) hotel retains the charm of an earlier era. A nice feature is the continental breakfast put out on each floor: juice, rolls, butter, jam, fruit, coffee, tea; put on tray and take to your room. There is wireless internet, but it broke down for over a day while I was there. There is no coffee maker in the room; there is coffee in the lobby at all times, but it is stale and hardly warm. The rooms are definitely on the small side. But great value and location. I've stayed there eight or ten times.

Met my expectations

What do you expect for a $100 hotel room? The place is run down but the bed seemed cleanish and the shower was strong. I got the last parking spot which would have been an issue if there wasn't a spot. If you are needing a bed to sleep in cheap this place is adequate.

The front desk staff was friendly. I had to park 2 blocks away the first night though, that isn't quite the free parking I was expecting... I also had to grab the blanket off the other twin bed as it got cold at night and the thermostat isn't under any single room's controls... The satelite tv was "off" somehow, every now and then it would simply stutter, then blank out for about 30 sec... I went down one of my mornings for the "breakfast" but couldn't find it... Mostly, it's exactly 1.5 blocks into "scary," and that got old... Otherwise, was clean.

Staff was unfriendly. Also under staffed only one person in the office. Didn't answer the phone EVER. rooms were very small and the. Building was not secure. There were bums getting high eight outside out window. Very easy could of came on the hotel property. Besides that it was right in the middle of all the good stuff easy to get around. But I next time ans going to spend the extra $200cash to stay somewhere nicer. Didn't feel I got my moneys worth. Might as well stayed at a

Stayed as part of a weekend trip to get my daughter settled in for an intensive dance program. We needed an economical place to stay. The staff at check-in was very friendly. Room was clean and about what I expected. Was surprised, though, that there was no place in the room for hanging up jackets or clothes. The spout in the bath tub was missing the valve to activate the shower.
