Description
Luxury meets history, vintage meets modern at Theater District hotel The Hotel Whitcomb has a place in San Francisco history like no other: Following the 1906 earthquake, the building actually served as City Hall. The majestic Theater District property still looks a lot like it did back then, with crystal chandeliers, Tiffany glass and Italian marble columns and floors. Made-to-look-old furniture highlights rooms upstairs, though modern conveniences abound as well. The on-site Market Street Grill serves up basic American fare. Highlights Historical spot -- the hotel once served as San Francisco's City HallLocated in the Theater District, across Market Street from the Orpheum TheaterOrnate preserved lobbyDine on classic American fare at The Market Street Grill Rooms High ceilings are common in the Whitcomb's 447 guest rooms and 12 suites. Furniture in these rooms has been specially crafted so it looks old. Accommodations come standard with modern conveniences as well, including flat-screen televisions, ironing boards and spacious workstations. Many also offer stunning views of San Francisco Bay, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. The Sunny Jim Suite also includes a wet bar and a dining area. Features Marble floors, polished brass fixtures, Tiffany glass and fresh flowers accentuate the ornate Main Lobby. This area transports guests back to the turn of the 20th Century, when the building briefly served as City Hall. It became a hotel in 1916. It's also a great place to enjoy a coffee and read a complimentary newspaper. All guests have access to an on-site health and fitness center, dry-cleaning service (fees apply) and transportation to San Francisco International Airport (fees apply). Grab a homemade Dungeness crab cake at The Market Street Grill, the on-site restaurant. Upscale attitude but only fair value
-
Tech Exec
- Dec 22, 2012
Rooms in San Francisco are all expensive, so the Westin is no exception. But while it has an air of being more expensive at the lobby level, the rooms are only average in terms of amenities and comfort.
The best features are the floor to ceiling windows offering stunning views of the City; the comfortable linens; and the very quiet and efficient HVAC system.
The bathroom and furnishings are nothing special whatsoever. And the ridiculous snack tray can't be moved because it's electronically tethered so you have to stare at a mini-mart on the dresser of your $250+ per night hotel room.

The hotel is old but charming. The rooms, especially the beds, are very comfortable and inviting.

I reserved a queen room with shared bathroom. You get a small room with wall mounted TV, coat closet(w/iron and board), queen bed with reading lamps, normal sized corner sink, Window to alley, and mirror hair dryer/toiletries. I paid $90 and felt like it was well worth it for the location and quality of the room. You share a Shower room, and a specific men's or women's room with 2 other queen rooms on your floor. The rest of the hotel is the normal bathroom in room style. The lobby is basic, but has free breakfast muffins and coffee from 6am-10am. It was well visited by lots of visitors that lounged for an hour or so while I worked on my computer, enjoying coffee. Lots of internationals and couples seemed to be the clients. Will definitely use again, I liked my cozy quiet room.

It was in a very quiet neighborhood. I felt safe coming back from a late night out. There are a couple homeless here and there but you'll see them everywhere. Staff was polite and helpful. Like most people mentioned, there is only one receptionist so be patient when checking in. Room was very clean when we got in. No fridge or microwave but didn't really need it. Bathroom was spacious but no vent! I really think hotels should invest in bathroom vents. If I'm going to be picky about one thing in particular then shower heads need to be washed. Other than that it was a pleasant stay and I don't mind staying here again.

I was in San Francisco for a week for a conference and so the Good Hotel was my best option given its proximity to the convention center and the price. Most other hotels by the time I booked were twice the cost or a ways away. Some reviews I read weren't great, but I think these were by people staying in the hotel's second building. I was in the main building, which is comfortable, clean and friendly. The other building is more of an open motel style, which I wouldn't want to stay in by myself. I will say though- the Internet, at least in the rooms, was terrible and the neigjborhood isn't great at night. I would still recommend it though since its also in a central area and its an overall nice hotel!

Very old. A/C could be from the 1920s and leaks. Toilet and Shower are separate from the rooms and must be shared. Cockroaches and other bugs abound.
It is cheap though.

We stayed 5 nights at the hotel in November around Thanksgiving. It is a MOTEL, not really hotel. The room was clean, freshly made every day, comfortable.
Front staff, Rickey, made it his business to be very helpful. We had no car so walked the 6 or so blocks to the Westfield Shopping Mall and to public transportation. I considered the location fairly safe and did not feel threatened, even later in the evening. You do hear the traffic noise from the Bay Bridge, turn on the A/C and this helps. All in all very satisfied with service, cleanliness, and amenities for the price paid.

This hotel is a few block away from Moscone Center and was perfect for us. You can't beat the price for the rooms. Room has a mini fridge and microwave. Plus there's a local pizza place that delivers (menu in room) and there's free wi-fi. Nothing fancy here, but the staff is very helpful and friendly. We will definitely stay here again.
