Description
Luxury meets history, vintage meets modern at Theater District hotel The Hotel Whitcomb has a place in San Francisco history like no other: Following the 1906 earthquake, the building actually served as City Hall. The majestic Theater District property still looks a lot like it did back then, with crystal chandeliers, Tiffany glass and Italian marble columns and floors. Made-to-look-old furniture highlights rooms upstairs, though modern conveniences abound as well. The on-site Market Street Grill serves up basic American fare. Highlights Historical spot -- the hotel once served as San Francisco's City HallLocated in the Theater District, across Market Street from the Orpheum TheaterOrnate preserved lobbyDine on classic American fare at The Market Street Grill Rooms High ceilings are common in the Whitcomb's 447 guest rooms and 12 suites. Furniture in these rooms has been specially crafted so it looks old. Accommodations come standard with modern conveniences as well, including flat-screen televisions, ironing boards and spacious workstations. Many also offer stunning views of San Francisco Bay, as well as complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. The Sunny Jim Suite also includes a wet bar and a dining area. Features Marble floors, polished brass fixtures, Tiffany glass and fresh flowers accentuate the ornate Main Lobby. This area transports guests back to the turn of the 20th Century, when the building briefly served as City Hall. It became a hotel in 1916. It's also a great place to enjoy a coffee and read a complimentary newspaper. All guests have access to an on-site health and fitness center, dry-cleaning service (fees apply) and transportation to San Francisco International Airport (fees apply). Grab a homemade Dungeness crab cake at The Market Street Grill, the on-site restaurant. Cute room!

  • Karister
  • Apr 25, 2012
This room was perfect! Very cute and clean. Not the greatest neighborhood - lots of sketchy people around. But only a short walk to the subway system, busses and trolleys and shopping. Make sure you have your printout of how many people you have booked. They tried to charge me extra for 3 people but I was able to prove that's the way I booked it so it was quickly resolved. Small but hot continental breakfast next door. I would book it again.

Though the location is a few blocks off the beaten path, it doesn't take long to walk to the area around Powell and Market (maybe 7-8 minutes?). The area has been described as "sketchy", though me, my wife, and my 22 month old daughter never felt un-safe. If you scare absurdly easily, then you probably don't belong anywhere in San Francisco. My wife and I were very pleased with the hotel. The staff was extremely helpful and considerate. Our room was clean and comfortable, and made a great place to crash after seeing the sights all day. The morning muffins and coffee became a ritual we greatly anticipated. Overall, I think we'd both give the Carriage Inn a strong 'A'.

Great location and value for money!

  • cheesy87
  • Mar 21, 2012
Quite a quirky eco friendly hotel situated in a great location for all of the central San Francisco attractions. Hotel rooms were clean, spacious and the eco friendly products, stying etc were a nice change to your bog standard chain hotels. Car parking was $20 a day which for convenience was decent value vs the public parking lot around the corner. Fantastic location in terms of walking to Union Sq (about 10 min max walk) or there's a tram/bus stop just up the road (3 min walk). Staff were friendly and very efficient, any reported problems (hair dryer missing) were fixed immediately. I'd definitely recommend this hotel in terms of value, location and ease for a long or short break to a great city. Public transport in San Fran was great but if you can get a car hired definitely do it, was very cool to drive over the Golden Gate Bridge and explore a bit more of the city.

We enjoyed the brightness and cleanliness of the hotel and the friendly staff. The beds were very hard and it would have a higher score on the room comfort if they were a tad softer. It was really nice to see automatic dispensers full of soap, shampoo, and conditioner. Would have also been a bigger plus if the rooms came with a small refrigerator. Overall we were very happy with the hotel and would stay there again.

The large windows with great views were the highlight of the hotel. All in all, it's a good hotel, not a great one but a good one and nothing really to complain about but at the same time nothing too much to blow you away. Convenient location for downtown SF without being in the horrible theater area and it's dodgy clientele. Would stay there again

Sehr freundlicher Besitzer, Motel sonst aber durchschnittlich

  • Nico
  • Jul 27, 2011

The room was decent. It was clean, quiet, and comfortable. The staff were helpful and polite. It is located in a pretty slummy part of town, but it was very close to the civic center which was the reason we stayed there. The only thing I wasn't happy with was the parking situation. The garage is dark and creepy with many homeless people hangning around outside. I definitely wouldn't let my girlfriend make a trip to the car by herself. Overall I'd say the hotel was worth the price.

We just needed a place to lay our heads after the NLDS championship game on Friday. Parking at the ballpark was 45 dollars. We got a room and parking for 109.00. We live 80 miles away and did not want to drive home after the game. This place suited our needs just fine. Not fancy and definitely not a "destination" hotel. It is what it is - inexpensive and no frills

It was a good clean place if you need a place to sleep and shower. We had a small room, which is fine, but the television only receives a few channels. I was nervous at first after reading some reviews, but was relieved that it turned out to be a good stay. The one problem: I left my jacket in the closet when I left and called a few days later to get it back...no luck. It's been two weeks and I still have not been given a simple "yes" or "no" that they have it. Everytime i call, they tell me to call tomorrow 'cause the staff is either gone home or cleaning rooms! So if anyone out there finds a black (faux) leather jacket with zippers on the front upper pockets...it's mine. Please send it to me. [...], the office clerk was nice.

I like this hotel. It's very nice. Not in the best neighborhood, but hopefully you'll get a good price as a result. And it's not in the worst neighborhood either. (I've stayed at "nicer" hotels in SF that were in comparable locations.) They do everything just right, and that's not to be underestimated. Thought it was nice that they included a list of the TV channels and the HBO Guide. (I stayed at the Hilton later in the same week, and they didn't offer that.) It's the little touches like that that let you know that they know what they're doing at the Holiday Inn.

Lovely but aging hotel, fine staff, good restaurant, and clean heated swimming pool.Only black mark - neighborhood seedy - you'll get hit on by beggars outside the hotel.

Great location, if you don't mind the crowds

  • MrsMidsomer

The staff are very friendly and efficient. The hotel location is superb and central. However it gets a very high volume of traffic and the rooms and amenities show the resulting wear and tear. The bathrooms and fixtures in particular could use an upgrade. if you don't mind the crowds this is a great pick for a downtown SFO hotel within walking distance of a number of attractions and amenities. And of course the view from the View bar and lounge is incomparable, even though it makes for a rather expensive bar bill

Great little hotel, lots of clean quality personality.

I reserved a queen room with shared bathroom. You get a small room with wall mounted TV, coat closet(w/iron and board), queen bed with reading lamps, normal sized corner sink, Window to alley, and mirror hair dryer/toiletries. I paid $90 and felt like it was well worth it for the location and quality of the room. You share a Shower room, and a specific men's or women's room with 2 other queen rooms on your floor. The rest of the hotel is the normal bathroom in room style. The lobby is basic, but has free breakfast muffins and coffee from 6am-10am. It was well visited by lots of visitors that lounged for an hour or so while I worked on my computer, enjoying coffee. Lots of internationals and couples seemed to be the clients. Will definitely use again, I liked my cozy quiet room.
