Yes, the neighborhood is a little dodgy (but incredibly convenient: just a couple of blocks from the Powell BART and the heart of downtown SF).....but the hotel itself is clean, pleasant, fun to be in (the movie theme is very tastefully and effectively handled)....the staff helpful and polite.....my room was spacious (too often, older, center city hotels have rooms the size of closets).....the price was right, as well.....all told, quite a find.....I'd like to stay there again!

This hotel is great. My friend and I stayed there for vacation. Hotel is very nice and clean. the people are helpful and are always willing to help with anything. It's in the best location of union square, with alot of shopping and eating. The cable car starts a block away and it takes you to the wharf. Also it has a stop for tour buses at union square which is two blocks from it. The only thing is the room with one bed is very small ask for two bed room.

Clean rooms, good location

  • photomaria
  • Jan 3, 2012
We stayed in Petite Queen for 4 nights over the New Year's holidays. Front desk staff were helpful and polite, the room was clean and cozy, and the location was convenient - lots of dining options, mini-markets and coffee shops in the area. I was a little worried about the neighborhood -some reviews suggested it's somewhat sketchy, but it's simply not true. You might have a homeless guy ask you for some change and a cigarette, but that's it. We never felt threatened or uncomfortable on the street even after dark. It is within walking distance of Chinatown (20mins), Japantown (20 mins), Moma (20 mins), Downtown (20 mins) and Fisherman's Warf (45 mins). If you want to explore the city on foot, get a feel for San Francisco Atmosphere and have a room with a unique romantic feel - Vertigo is for you. Here are some things to be prepared for: Valet Parking will cost you $35 a day with unlimited in/out privileges. You have to call 30-40 minutes in advance to have your car ready. Street parking is tough, but doable after a day or two of figuring it out. Just read ALL the street signs and learn meter operation hours. There are also 2 street public garages in the area. Using those can save you about $15 a day. Hotel is located in a historic building, so with charm come little inconveniences-thin doors (be very quiet in the hallways), older tubs and elevator. Overall we really enjoyed our stay:it felt more like an apartment in the city than a hotel, and it is a great way to travel.

great hotel, awkward to walk alone at night

  • khlm
  • Dec 11, 2011
the hotel was great, good beds, clean, good and healthy breakfast with fresh fruit and lettuce, tomato, cucumber, two types of cheese, meats, waffels, cereals, etc. There are a lot of homeless people in the first few blocks of Ellis street. As a woman I felt awkard walking home alone at night, but with a friend it was fine. It didn't feel hostile at all, just outnumbered. If you catch a cab home a night (quite cheap) or avoid these first few blocks by taking Geary street and then Hyde or Larkin to the hotel, it's fine.

I would have given this 4 stars, but the room needed some upgrades. BED- was by far the best! the TV could not get s signal, rug and floor and bathroom were clean, but it just lacked the boutique-y flare that comes with that cute overall special feel. It was great in terms of location, as I was visiting friends that lived a few blocks away and the bars we visited were all within walking distance, which at the end of the nite was a lifesaver considering we could just walk back to our hotel after many drinks and it was totally fine.

Had just one night in SF with the gf, and decided to try this place out. Great hotel. Looks and feels very high class, with a little bit of that old school tradition to it. Location was terrific, we were either a short walk or a short taxi ride to plenty of restaurants or clubs/bars. The room was terrific - great, comfortable king bed and a very warm vibe in the room overall (which was perfect for a December weekend). Place is usually pretty expensive, but the deal through here made it feel ilke a real steal. Would be happy to stay here again in the future.

One of the best stays I had while I traveled the west coast was at the Castle Inn. Situated in a very good location with the Lombard street, Fisherman's Wharf and other attraction pretty close by. The rates were amazingly low and yet the rooms were very well kept which made our stay extremely comfortable. The best part though for me was the extremely friendly and helpful guy at the front desk. Made our stay even better with his helpful suggestions. I'd recommend Castle Inn to anyone who is looking for a comfortable place to stay which offers great rates :)

Older Hotel going through renovations. A decent place to stay if all you need is a clean bathroom and a clean bed. The shower doesn't get too hot, so be aware. A simple, basic room converted from what looks like an old apartment. After getting over the shock when you first walk into the room, it is not all that bad if you are ok with simple and basic.

If you want to save money, stay here

  • Nov 23, 2011
The staff was great. The hotel is fine; I wasn't impressed. There was no drinking water anywhere, so you have to buy it. Definitely an annoyance. Only one serious issue: location! Terrible location. Every time I went outside, I was concerned (I'm a 30 year old, average size male). When I'm in the hotel, I was fine. I would only stay again in this hotel if I really wanted to save money; otherwise, I would stay elsewhere. I marked that I would not recommend the hotel to a friend, but let me qualify: if you're staying with another person, I say it's fine; if you're alone, and unless you know marshal-arts, I really hesitate recommending it. Stay there if you want to save money. I saved $100.

Description
Green boutique Nob Hill hotel blends history and eco-consciousnessGreen is the reality at the Hotel Carlton, a Joie de Vivre property. The Nob Hill hotel is certified by the city of San Francisco as a green business, is one of the few hotels in town to have solar panels, and was the first hotel in the U.S. to receive the LEED EB O&M distinction. The structure itself is historic, and dates back to the early 1900s. Inside, the vibe is international, as walls are adorned with art photos from the American Himalayan Foundation. Highlights Located mere blocks from City Hall and the Federal BuildingComplimentary nightly wine hour; free guided tour of the cityOn-site restaurant Saha offers Arabic fusion cuisine Rooms The majority of the Carlton's rooms offer guests expansive, unobstructed city views (a rarity in this district of San Francisco) because the hotel isn't flanked by adjoining buildings. Each of the 160 rooms (and the lone suite) includes an in-room laptop safe, a ceiling fan, and a CD player that is MP3 compatible. Decor in these rooms is soft; soothing tones of light blue and cream are punctuated by touches of glowing colors, such as saffron, Oriental red and a cheerful persimmon. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available. Pets are welcome (fees apply). Features Without question, the Hotel Carlton's attention to conservation is a major accomplishment. Nearly one quarter of the hotel's energy is generated by the rooftop solar panel installation.   All guests are invited to a complimentary wine hour every night, and are entitled to a complimentary tour of the city with a Golden Gate Greeter (a volunteer local expert). Also complimentary: morning towncar service to the Financial District, and shuttle service to and from the San Francisco Airport. The hotel Hotel Carlton offers adjoining rooms, ideal for families.   Saha offer an eclectic blend of Yemenese and Californian cuisines. The restaurant also features an old-world Chinese "scholar's table" that seats eight, bringing friends and strangers together to share the adventures of the day. The restaurant is only open for breakfast and dinner. We walked to Union Square and Chinatown easily. Access to cable cars fo Fisherman's Wharf were convenient. We had our car and the ride to Golden Gate Park was quick and simple. Hotel served wine in the late afternoon and it was fun to meet people from Australia and The Netherlands. As above, it's a good place to stay, an old but well kept hotel.

The hotel was very nice and at a teriffic location to local attractions. 3 blocks to cable cars, union square, china town. amenities included breakfast, supply of bottled water and soda, apples, cookies, and an evening wine and snack hour & half. Room was roomy with sitting chairs, fire place and many shelves for storage. Coffee provided in room. we would definitely stay here again and would recommend it for older couples with no kids. Floors are wooden, so early risers or night owls are audible. one loud nightclub at back of hotel had some howlers at 2AM on two nights. Otherwise with location of room, noise was at a minimum.

Petite Auberge is conveniently located within walking distance from Union Square and right off the trolleycar stop. Front desk and staff were friendly and inviting, though rarely around, since they seem to be sharing staff with the neighboring White Swan Inn. Our room was cozy (read: small), but comfortable. Their free breakfast was very nice, usually including coffee, eggs, toast, and cereal. Housekeeping was not good--they forgot to clean our room one of the days, and some of our items went 'missing' on another.

The best location you can get for a hotel in San Francisco. It's 1 1/2 blocks from pier 39 and 1 1/2 blocks from fishermens wharf. It's within walking distance of almost everything. Can be a bit pricey, but reserve a room at least 2 weeks in advance and you can get some good deals. From the outside it looks a bit dated, but the inside has been remodeled and is very nice. It has a medium sized pool, a small but well equipped fitness room, and a fire pit in the courtyard. The staff was courteous, helpful, and professional. It also has a back entrance that opens onto the Embarcadero. The only downside is the parking, they charged $45 a day when I stayed there, but a block away there was parking for $30.

My stay in SF was for business. The location was good for my commute to the financial district. The location is close to all of the major shopping retailers, BART, Chinatown, restaurants, street cars and the trolley. My room was on the top floor of the hotel so I did not hear any noise from the street and I never heard anything through the walls of adjacent rooms. The only complaint I had with the room was that there wasn't a lot of water pressure when taking a shower. Other wise the free wireless internet and a clean room every day after coming back from a long day of work was welcoming. I did not take advantage of any other amenities. The next time I travel to SF I am going to look for a hotel that includes a fitness center as this hotel does not have one but offers a daily pass to a nearby fitness center for 3 lincolns, each visit.

This is a sweet little gem in the heart of San Francisco. The decor and ambiance are perfectly up my alley. The bathroom was TINY though....like tiny in a way that the faucet is even too big for the tiny little sink. But seriously, if you're looking for top notch in luxury, you are also willing to pay a lot more for a room.....basically, with Hotel Frank, you get a bit more than you pay for....but remember, this is not a Four Seasons. Regardless, I love that Hotel Frank is not stuffy, I LOVED the staff (Yay Ronnie!!)... Remember that you are paying an additional $30 a day for Valet parking (the norm in San Fran), just make sure that you leave no valuables in your car, as there were strange problems with our car when we got it back from a three day stint in Valet parking. Nothing went missing, thank goodness, but the trunk was broken and the seats and windows were adjusted (why must we adjust the passenger seat to park a car 5 blocks away, I wonder?). The ipods were disconnected and someone had changed the radio to the "Playboy" channel and had adjusted the air conditioning to a wonderful 58 degrees. During winter. I don't want to know what happened in our car while it was in the care of these people, but all I know is that they were happy to refund. And that makes me happy. I'll update as soon as the refund goes through.

I'm a single man and I spent 5 nights at the hotel on vacation. The location was very near all public transportation indside the city with easy access to everything. The staff was extremely helpful and pleasant and the room was clean. The bed was very comfortable but the hotel design could have been better. Noise level in the early morning hours was high (slamming doors, loud talking, etc), so it didnt allow much in the way for sleeping in. The room was considerably warm at times considering the outdoor temperature was very pleasant. All in all, slightly above average--I would stay again.

Booked a double bed room, ended up on the sixth floor with a partial view of the Bay Bridge. Only spent the night there so views were not important. The room was a good size along with the bathroom. It could have been cleaner but at least the bedding was clean. Beds are comfortable and for the price I am glad I stayed here.

The room was glorious. It was spacious and luxurious feeling. We had just been at the UCLA guest house, nice and priced right but not exactly luxurious, so Le Meridien was a great change. We had an easy check in with pleasant staff, helpful concierge for dinner recommendations, easy checkout. Overall great experience.

Overall we had a very pleasant stay here. Our initial room was on the second floor with no natural light, a gross ac unit and dusty and dirty corners... And the wireless Internet didn't work. After a quick call to the front desk we were moved to a MUCH nicer room on the 7th floor. We had a view and the beds were a lot more comfortable. The staff at the pickwick are superb. In the end, we had a great stay here and I would definitely come again! Oh yea, and the location is great! Lots of good eats near by and close to the BART.

Description
Historic grandeur overlooking the Golden Gate City This Nob Hill mainstay, dating back to 1907, blends contemporary and historic tastes. Decorative touches such as marble floors and Corinthian columns evoke turn-of-the-century grandeur, while modern conveniences such as high-speed Internet and a full-service fitness center and spa keep travelers grounded in the present. Three well-regarded restaurants offer options for every meal, and the city's oldest Tiki bar provides a break from the formality of the hotel. HighlightsThe hilltop location delivers panoramic and breathtaking views of San Francisco BayHop on any one of the city's cable cars right out frontUnion Square shopping is only a four-block walk from the hotel Rooms Accommodations -- 591 rooms, 62 of them suites -- span two buildings: the original, circa-1907 structure and a tower built in the 1960s. Rooms vary in size (325-425 square feet; up to 6,000 for suites), but all come with flat-screen televisions, Frette luxury linens, MP3 docking stations and Miller Harris toiletries. Many also offer stunning views of San Francisco Bay, while Wi-Fi and high-speed Internet access are available in all (fees apply). Features The hotel has received numerous awards, including the AAA Four Diamond Award and ExxonMobil Four Star Award. Marble floors and Corinthian columns trimmed in gold accentuate the ornate Main Lobby. This area, spruced up in 1999, transports guests back to 1907, when the hotel opened. It may also transport TV fans back to the 1980s: Aaron Spelling's "Hotel" series was shot here. The United Nations Charter was drafted in the hotel, and even the concierge service is historic. Dating back to 1973, it's the first formal concierge desk in the U.S. All guests have access (fees apply) to the on-site Club One at Nob Hill Health Club, a full-service facility with spa and fitness center. Grab a Mai-Tai at the Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar, a kitschy-but-lovable Tiki lounge on the site of an old (circa-1920s) indoor pool. Beautiful location, and great staff. Everyone was very attentive and polite. The room was very good sized (two queens) and the bathroom and closet could have been rooms by themselves! The only drawback is that the hotel is on top of a steep hill so the walk to it is quite a workout. Taking the cable car is a great option b/c it stops right in front of the hotel.

This was a fantastic trip! The hotel is beautiful and the beds heavenly! It was a quick weekend trip so my daughter could audition for a graduate school program for Opera performance. The location to the music studio was perfect. and we had a blast exploring S.F. The ONLY downside for me was NO coffee maker in the room. I had expected that complimentary coffee would be a no brainer at such a nice hotel. I felt nickel and dimed having to pay $8 for a cup of coffee in my room.
