The hotel is centrally located. Everything you need is within walking distance. The staff is helpful and friendly. The rooms are nicely adorned and the beds are very comfortable and make for a good nights sleep. It is not a fancy hotel, but it is a good value. I will definitely stay there again.

Good value for the money

  • Cactus girl
  • May 2, 2012
This is a clean and comfortable hotel for the money. It's located 3-4 blocks from the trolley. You can park your car, if you've brought one, and take the trolley throughout the city. The cost (as of this posting) was $5 a day per person for an all-day pass. The staff was very courteous and helpful. We chose not to eat at the restaurant associated with the hotel (only because we have our favorite places), so we can't comment on the resturant. The hotel is located in your "typical" downtown neighborhood in any large city--meaning you'll see all types of people (tourists, families, business people as well as homeless individuals). We took the trolley to Petco Park, the Gaslamp District and to the Fashion Valley Mall (a very nice place to shop). My husband and I have stayed at many upscale Marriott, Westin and Sheraton hotels on business. However, for our personal travel, this is a nice hotel for the money. I don't believe it has a fitness or business center, but does offer free wi-fi, although it seemed a little slow when used with our iPad. We'd stay here again.

Great Hotel with A Great Location

  • androo
  • May 20, 2012
This Courtyard location was fantastic. The room was very clean and cozy. Location was not too bad it is located near many attractions including Sea World, Cornado Island, etc. Only downside to the location is the frequent airplanes flying out from the airport across the bay. In the evenings its not too bad though. Other than that though perfect place to stay with a friendly staff.

My wife and I decided to travel to the San Diego market on q whim and were very pleased when we checked in. This hotel offers a great location, convenient to the beach with a fantastc staff. The only downside is the absence of nicer restaurants within walking distance. In general we were very pleased and are planning our next stay for the same location.

pretty great overall

  • A guy with modest needs
  • Dec 4, 2012
I greatly enjoyed my stay. The place was very nice, the room was very nice. The amenities were outstanding. The staff was friendly. The hotel lobby has a glass elevator that is very very cool. A few small kinks caused some minor issues: 1. The breakfast in the cafe was terrible. I told them and they never got back to me about this, though they said they would. 2. The phone in my room did not work. This was fixed very quickly. 3. I asked for a few things (tissues, coffee) to be brought up, and they did not understand me - (?english as a second language problems?) but this got fixed pretty quick 4. I asked them to reserve a van to the ariport for me at a certain time, and they screwed that up twice, though it was ok because I expected that they would do that and I was able to catch a van on time. 5. On my way from the airport to the hotel, they claimed that they sent the van 2 times, so I ended up calling them 4 times, and waiting around at the airport for over an hour. Eventually they got me but there was very poor communication there.

Homeless Haven

We liked the hotel but we were not comfortable walking in the area because of the large number of homeless people occupying the sidewalks. We had a good dinner in the hotel's restaurant, but we were practically the only people in the place. That detracted from the otherwise ok ambience.

Parking: 35 dollars. It is from check in to check out but because I was watching a Padres game on day of check out, they allowed me to stay until after game without charging me again. This was really cool. Overall, the staff gets 5 stars, from check in, valet, room service to the poolside staff. The best thing about this was the location. I went to a padres game without ever leaving the building, went to dinner, went to a club both which were walking distance. The room seemed kind of small, but it felt clean. I guess I expected to be wowed a little more but it is just ordinary room with a good quality bed. The view was great, to the bay. I couldn't get a balcony room. There was no key in the room for the minibar so I had to order one. Also, our radio speakers were bad so we ordered a new radio and they brought it up quickly. A girl in our party said that it could use another outlet by the hall for hair drying by the mirror. IDK! Good overall.

Good value, fun location

  • jerrymi
  • Dec 27, 2012
We enjoyed the resort and the Pacific Beach neighborhood. Very lively beach community. The hotel is older and doesn't have all the amenities of a five-star hotel (eg, room refrigerator), but the location and pricing were hard to beat. Parking was $13/day, self-parking, more for valet. Easy driving access to downtown, Sea World, La Jolla coastline. Easy walking access to Pacific Beach and Mission Beach waterfront. If you just want to relax and not do all the San Diego tourist options, you could have a good time without a car. The resort has rental options for bicycles, skates, etc.

Historic San Diego hotel gives guest a glimpse of the past Located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter, the Horton Grand Hotel is the modern incarnation of two Victorian hotels that opened in the late 1880s. The hotel's oak grand staircase, marble lobby and antique furnishings transport guests to the 19th century. Just steps from the San Diego Convention Center, the Horton Grand Hotel today delights guests with charming ambiance, friendly service and a fantastic location near Petco Park and the bars, restaurants and shopping of the Gaslamp Quarter. Highlights Listed on the National Register of Historic PlacesUnique Victorian-style guest rooms feature hand-carved armoires, fireplacesLocated in San Diego's historic Gaslamp QuarterNew Orleans-style open-air courtyard Location Just two blocks from the Horton Grand Hotel, Westfield Horton Plaza is a hub of activity. Live music and performances take place all summer, and public art adds an eclectic sensibility. More than 100 stores and services are anchored by Macy's and Nordstrom. Rooms Some of America's great historic figures -- Wyatt Earp, Babe Ruth and President Benjamin Harrison -- stayed at the original hotels that make up today's Horton Grand Hotel. Banker's Hill Victorian

Wonderful fresh baked scones and a complete breakfast to start your day. A wine and cheese "happy hour" prior to a stroll in Balboa Park. Attentive staff and a chance to meet other guests whom you never would in other circumstances. Rooms very well decorated and the carriage house a bit small and perhaps could have used a ceiling fan, maybe not in keeping with victorian style? Convenient to Balboa park museums, the zoo, downtown and harbor area. Great restaurants within easy walking distance and felt safe even after dark. A very enjoyable stay.

Great Bed and Breakfast

  • Jenna Traveler
  • Jun 18, 2012
Really beautiful property. Young, friendly, knowledgable staff. Tasty breakfast, but needs some variation. Each day was a scramble, eggs to order, or fruit and yogurt. Luxurious sheets!! Great location -- a short walk or drive to everything. A couple minor things were in disrepair: the front door knob, a slow drain in our room, and the piano is badly out of tune. The breakfast service on the last day was less professional -- he forgot about us a couple of times. Snacks and wine each evening were a delight. All in all, it was a great stay and I would recommend it and hope to return. The Gothic Room is very private and beautiful!

Nice, but flawed

  • DVDNut42
  • Sep 10, 2012
Hotel has charm and history, a beautiful atrium off the lobby and all the trimmings of earlier glory days. The room (and the bed) were very comfortable. A few flaws, however. The elevator only worked for part of one of the three days we were there. The room cleaning crew seemed to stop halfway done on the second day: the bed was made, but the towels in the bathroom hadn't been touched, and there was a tattered dust rag sitting on my CPAP (breathing) device on the nightstand. Gross!

Review of San Diego Courtyard Marriott Downtown

  • Not enough
  • Apr 30, 2012
Overall I had a very good experience with this hotel. It was lovely, in that it is located in a historical building. Its location in the Gaslamp area made restaurants and other activities very accessible. The staff were very helpful and positive. The only downside was the degree to which the rooms were not insulated to reduce sound. Each night there were people on our hall being very loud for long periods of time in the middle of the night and you could hear every word said.

We had a wonderful stay in San Diego, this hotel was very nice, on the older side but very clean and comfortable. The continental breakfast was awesome, much more than expected and the staff fabulous. They have a shuttle bus that will take and pick you up almost any where you want to go, which made sight seeing wonderful since parking is very difficult and expensive. Would stay here again.

Our stay was average if a little over priced for what it was. We had a hard time getting into the hotel at first, the streets downtown are mostly one way. The staff was friendly and helpful but the hotel itself is nothing special. Our room was clean but the beds were a little hard. It is right off the 5 freeway and the noise is dampened somewhat but can still be heard. I would not recomend strolling around outside the property as there are quite a few homeless around the area.

I just stayed here this past weekend with my mother in law and sister in law. They were able to get us adjoining rooms which was great. The staff was very friendly and helpful, we had some issues with the wireless internet. The room was very clean and modern. They had everything you could want. We got drink coupons and breakfast coupons for being priority club members. The restaurant service was good and the food was pretty good too for the price. The location cant be beat. We had a great experience and will definetely stay here again.

I stayed for four days and the hotel was so nice considering their price and location, etc. They also provided a complimentary snack time before evening (not sure but maybe 4pm to 6pm). The menu is not just a snack, but a meal. If you want to save money, you should stay here.

I had a bad experience all day long from the time I left home until I arrived at the Residence Inn. Upon my arrival the clerk saw the expression on my face and told me to take a deep breath and gave me a bottle of cold water. From that point on, my trip was great. The room was nice. The breakfast was great. The only down fall was the parking. $38 a night is too much. Parking should be included with the stay.

Very attentive staff and fabulous location RIGHT on Pacific Beach just north of the Crystal Pier. Lots of restaurants within walking distance. I rented a bike from Pure Life ($10/day for three days) and rode around Mission Bay and up to La Jolla. Great bike paths!

Good quality, small, boutique hotel with a minimalist design and friendly staff. The restaurant and terrace are great and the location is good for going out in Pacific Beach and the ocean is thirty seconds away. The rooms were too expensive however.

Gaslamp Getaway

  • Nade's travels
  • Aug 20, 2012
This is my third time staying at this Hotel. It is always a wonderful stay. The staff is extremely helpful and the location doesn't get any better. You are in the middle of the Gaslamp district with all the goings on and nightlife as well as being 5 blocks from the convention center. The view from the rooftop of this hotel is amazing. The restaurant in the hotel is the Melting Pot and they have a Happy hour from 5-7 daily where you can get specialty cocktails for $5 as well as any cheese or chocolate fondue for half price, They also have Vin De Syrah - a wine bar below the Melting Pot. A chic hang-out for wine lovers, although they do serve other cocktails as well. The breakfast is fair. Basically toast and jam, coffee, juice, & bagels twice per week. There is no pool, but you have access to the pool at the Hardrock Hotel a few blocks away.

The staff was amazing. very helpfull and the room was very clean and tidy every day of our stay. The room attendant even took the time to arrange my daughters stuffies on the bed after making it! :) This meant alot to our little princess. It was also a great location just a short stroll to the amazing resturants and shopping of the Gaslamp quarter. we will certainly be booking with them again next time!

Day trip to SD

  • Dandy H.
  • Dec 27, 2012
Street traffic noise was too loud so we asked to move to a room facing the courtyard. Staff was very friendly and moved us. Warned us that diners might be loud too. Wasn't actually that bad (more like murmur of voices..which is better then the sound of cars zipping by). Loved the decor of the rooms and our fish friend. Room was clean and the bed felt great. Short car ride to zoo, botanical gardens, coronado, and restaurants. Will definitely come here again next time we're in SD.

While the hotel is being renovated they were good to give us a suite away from all the noise. The rooms were spacious, clean, newly renovated. The location is in Hillcrest right at Balboa Park which is a nice neighborhood. The staff was friendly and informative. The lower level bar/restaurant is a lot of fun at night with good staff and entertainment. The penthouse restaurant is beautiful with views. I highly recommend this hotel.
