Pretty Good Choice in San Diego

The hotel was lovely and the wine hour was great. They don't have self-parking so prepare to pay $40 each day for their valet service or "park at your own risk" across the street.

Hip hotel at a great price

  • Joshuabee
  • Dec 10, 2012
Exactly what you'd expect from a Kimpton hotel - clean, hip decor, well-appointed comfortable rooms, and a good location. The only complaint I had was that people in the hallways can be LOUD. I get that it's something of a party hotel, but wow it seems like the doors must be made of paper for all the good they did in blocking noise. Side note- If you don't want to hear bass thumping in your room, make sure you request specifically not to be placed on the 5th floor overlooking the pool. It wasn't overwhelming, but it wasn't helping my hangover any while I was trying to sleep it off on a Saturday morning.

Description
Hip, open-plan hotel in historic Gaslamp QuarterThe Keating is a small, 35-room hotel in the center of the Gaslamp Quarter of downtown San Diego. Designed by Pininfarina (read: Ferrari and Maserati) and opened in 2007, the hotel prides itself on its unconventionality and caters to people with active lifestyles. On site are the Sway Lounge, a chic nightclub with an underground NYC ambience, a spa offering Swedish stress-relief, a pizzeria, Club diVino and the MerK restaurant. The Keating also offers meeting facilities and in-room couple's massage and aromatherapy. 3 Reasons To Stay: Cutting-edge, Pininfarina-designed boutique hotel in a listed, historic 1890s building Located in the vibrant Gaslamp Quarter near San Diego's major attractions and entertainment venues Fine dining, Italian wine collection and exclusive wine tastings from local wineries The Keating RoomsThe 35 luxurious 'stanzas' (guest rooms) and suites feature customized furnishings, such as spacious closets, ergonomic chairs, and custom-design beds by Pininfarina. Many aspects of the 1890s building, like mahogany fittings and stainless steel, remain. The loft-style rooms feature no interior walls: the traditional bathroom/bedroom division is replaced by an open floor plan. Resin and concrete floor treatments eliminate the need for carpeting. Expansive ceilings and the building's original exposed brick walls complement the decoration. Good Location

  • Bruin Lady
  • Dec 29, 2012
We stayed overnight to attend the Holiday Bowl so the Sofia Hotel was perfectly located with the restaurants of the Gaslamp District, Seaport Village, and the trolley station all within a very short walk. Our double bed room was quite small (thank heavens there was a sliding door on the bathroom!) but the bed was comfy and the room very clean and quiet. Brian at the front desk was helpful with tips on riding the trolley. Our stay was definitely good value for the money.

Was good for the price, but...

  • Dec 10, 2012
...the front desk clerk delivered a snide shot that was particularly surprising at check-in, but I let it go. Was due to conflict with their info/my booking info, and he resolved it to my satisfaction. King room small, but bed was great, and room/bath VERY clean. Carpet/furniture rather worn, however. Restaurant staff friendly. Valet parking at $22/nite very pricey compared to room rate.

The hotel looks and feels dated, but it is all about the location. It is located right at the bay. Horton plaza (heart of downtown) and Amtrak are within a mile. The hotel provides shuttle to the Zoo, Horton Plaza, Amtrak and the Airport. The staff were really nice, it was getting late for our flight, so the staff put us on a taxi and made sure we made it on time. The furniture, decor and comfort were below par. Overall the experience was pretty pleasant.

Upscale and affordable

  • Patwill9
  • Dec 16, 2012
A surprisingly affordable slice of luxury in downtown San Diego. The rooms are spacious and attractively decorated, there's a friendly vibe among the staff and guests, the marina is a 10 minute walk away, and there's a terrific brewpub next door. There is a downside to all this value: not an awesome location if you are a fun seeker instead of a businessperson. You'll have to cab or walk to the Gas Lamp district and there is zero shopping other than the chain store laden mall. I was happy to make the trade off to stay at a hotel I couldn't otherwise afford.

Nice spot minutes away from Gaslamp

  • Dean P.
  • Dec 11, 2012
Great spot to stay for a short vaca! My room was clean, staff was nice and location was satisfactory. Minutes away walking to the Gaslamp District. The new 'rooftop' lounge is a nice spot, even though its not literally on the rooftop (2nd floor). Very posh. The gym has minimal equipment but enough to get by. They have a nice foosball table close to the pool which is always fun. I would recommend a stay...

Noisy and cramped

  • Discerning global travell
  • Nov 29, 2012
We chose it because of its convenient downtown location. Antique elevator may be 'cute' but dangerous in its vicious slamming of grille doors, slow and unreliable. Very helpful and service orientated staff. Room cramped, stuffy and bed small for two people. Adjacent Brian's restaurant will not accept hotel discount vouchers on most items and only once can discount be used. However lots of better alternatives all around. Valet parking expensive. We walked a lot and used public transport. Noisy area, no quiet rooms. Visit rooftop for breathtaking views. Next time we'll choose a better value for money hotel nearby.

Spacious....NOT!

  • koriss
  • Nov 25, 2012
We were a bit disappointed....the room did not resemble the pictures on this site. Our room was very small....thankfully, we didn't spend much time there. No ocean view either. After reading other reviews, we requested a room with a whirlpool tub....the guy at the desk asked what the difference was between a whirlpool tub and a regular tub. We were told the hotel didn't have whirlpool tubs. The location is a big plus.....walk to restaurants, bars, and shops in the gaslamp quarter. Brian's 24 is awesome and the valet parking is a deal! Just be sure to request your vehicle 10 min before you plan to leave.

The hotel is centrally located. Everything you need is within walking distance. The staff is helpful and friendly. The rooms are nicely adorned and the beds are very comfortable and make for a good nights sleep. It is not a fancy hotel, but it is a good value. I will definitely stay there again.

Good value for the money

  • Cactus girl
  • May 2, 2012
This is a clean and comfortable hotel for the money. It's located 3-4 blocks from the trolley. You can park your car, if you've brought one, and take the trolley throughout the city. The cost (as of this posting) was $5 a day per person for an all-day pass. The staff was very courteous and helpful. We chose not to eat at the restaurant associated with the hotel (only because we have our favorite places), so we can't comment on the resturant. The hotel is located in your "typical" downtown neighborhood in any large city--meaning you'll see all types of people (tourists, families, business people as well as homeless individuals). We took the trolley to Petco Park, the Gaslamp District and to the Fashion Valley Mall (a very nice place to shop). My husband and I have stayed at many upscale Marriott, Westin and Sheraton hotels on business. However, for our personal travel, this is a nice hotel for the money. I don't believe it has a fitness or business center, but does offer free wi-fi, although it seemed a little slow when used with our iPad. We'd stay here again.

pretty great overall

  • A guy with modest needs
  • Dec 4, 2012
I greatly enjoyed my stay. The place was very nice, the room was very nice. The amenities were outstanding. The staff was friendly. The hotel lobby has a glass elevator that is very very cool. A few small kinks caused some minor issues: 1. The breakfast in the cafe was terrible. I told them and they never got back to me about this, though they said they would. 2. The phone in my room did not work. This was fixed very quickly. 3. I asked for a few things (tissues, coffee) to be brought up, and they did not understand me - (?english as a second language problems?) but this got fixed pretty quick 4. I asked them to reserve a van to the ariport for me at a certain time, and they screwed that up twice, though it was ok because I expected that they would do that and I was able to catch a van on time. 5. On my way from the airport to the hotel, they claimed that they sent the van 2 times, so I ended up calling them 4 times, and waiting around at the airport for over an hour. Eventually they got me but there was very poor communication there.

Homeless Haven

We liked the hotel but we were not comfortable walking in the area because of the large number of homeless people occupying the sidewalks. We had a good dinner in the hotel's restaurant, but we were practically the only people in the place. That detracted from the otherwise ok ambience.

Very Classic Hotel

  • Anonymous
  • Dec 6, 2012
The furniture, moldings, and even the door keys scream classic charm. They try very hard to make this a five star experience and come very close. Much of the staff is young (not always a bad thing) and may still be searching for their own careers outside the hotel industry. Since they're not fully committed, this shows through just a bit from time to time and only creates a minor tarnish. Overall, great place to stay if you want to have easy access to areas outside downtown.

Nice rooms, clean. No refrigerator unless you pay extra. Ice machines are only on every other floor. No smoking policy yet we smelled pot on the 4th floor when we went to pick up ice.

Parking: 35 dollars. It is from check in to check out but because I was watching a Padres game on day of check out, they allowed me to stay until after game without charging me again. This was really cool. Overall, the staff gets 5 stars, from check in, valet, room service to the poolside staff. The best thing about this was the location. I went to a padres game without ever leaving the building, went to dinner, went to a club both which were walking distance. The room seemed kind of small, but it felt clean. I guess I expected to be wowed a little more but it is just ordinary room with a good quality bed. The view was great, to the bay. I couldn't get a balcony room. There was no key in the room for the minibar so I had to order one. Also, our radio speakers were bad so we ordered a new radio and they brought it up quickly. A girl in our party said that it could use another outlet by the hall for hair drying by the mirror. IDK! Good overall.

An economical hotel choice with free wifi. Not the most ideal location, and the staff lacked a bit of charm, but we were pleasantly surprised by the clean and nicely furnished rooms.

  • Jul 7, 2012
Our stay was average if a little over priced for what it was. We had a hard time getting into the hotel at first, the streets downtown are mostly one way. The staff was friendly and helpful but the hotel itself is nothing special. Our room was clean but the beds were a little hard. It is right off the 5 freeway and the noise is dampened somewhat but can still be heard. I would not recomend strolling around outside the property as there are quite a few homeless around the area.

I stayed for four days and the hotel was so nice considering their price and location, etc. They also provided a complimentary snack time before evening (not sure but maybe 4pm to 6pm). The menu is not just a snack, but a meal. If you want to save money, you should stay here.

I had a bad experience all day long from the time I left home until I arrived at the Residence Inn. Upon my arrival the clerk saw the expression on my face and told me to take a deep breath and gave me a bottle of cold water. From that point on, my trip was great. The room was nice. The breakfast was great. The only down fall was the parking. $38 a night is too much. Parking should be included with the stay.

Review of San Diego Courtyard Marriott Downtown

  • Not enough
  • Apr 30, 2012
Overall I had a very good experience with this hotel. It was lovely, in that it is located in a historical building. Its location in the Gaslamp area made restaurants and other activities very accessible. The staff were very helpful and positive. The only downside was the degree to which the rooms were not insulated to reduce sound. Each night there were people on our hall being very loud for long periods of time in the middle of the night and you could hear every word said.

We had a wonderful stay in San Diego, this hotel was very nice, on the older side but very clean and comfortable. The continental breakfast was awesome, much more than expected and the staff fabulous. They have a shuttle bus that will take and pick you up almost any where you want to go, which made sight seeing wonderful since parking is very difficult and expensive. Would stay here again.
