My husband and I drove down to San Diego for the night to see the Dodgers play the Padres at Petco Park on opening day. Hotel Solamar is located two blocks away, which is perfect walking distance. The hotel staff was very friendly and efficient. We were running late and they had us checked in within minutes and we were off to the game. We will definitely stay here again, even with the our kids. This is a hip, fun, and family hotel. Loved it! Pet friendly too!

Great value for someone traveling on a budget

  • Traveling on a budget
  • May 6, 2012
The Sofia Hotel is located in a perfect location. I stayed there for a week and found it very convenient. The staff were very helpful with all questions I had such as suggestions restaurants and flagging cabs down. The Hotel is located within a 5-10 minute walk of Petco Park and Gaslamp Quarters. Its a 15 minutes bus ride from The San Diego ZOO, just hop on the 7 bus across the street. It is a perfect hotel for anyone who is traveling on a budget. You wont find a hot tub in your room and things like that but if you are more interested in seeing the town, this is a great place to stay. The rooms are a little small but for the price it was great. Also, the restaurant in the hotel, Current, is also very good.

Despite some negative reviews in a popular travel review site, the W was quite enjoyable and a pleasant surprise. Staff exceptionally friendly. One complaint: a lot of extras were charged for such as internet even in the business office. There was uncertainty about which amenities provided were free vs billable, an awkward feeling.

The hotel is average and does require some updating of the rooms and amenities provided within them. The staff was not very helpful when the elevator broke and we were unable to get the luggage cart down from the third floor. The valet fee you pay is over priced and the attendants are not very helpful. Finally, the onsite restaraunt/bar has minimal offerings, over priced, and has a staff that is very unfriendly and not customer service orientated.

New Years Night o Fun

We stayed at this hotel on New Years Eve because we didn't want to drink and drive. It was a fantastic experience and we will definitely stay again. All of the staff, from the valet guys to housekeeping was friendly and happy and sincere. They are a huge part of what made our stay great. And the bed in the room was super comfy, great to sleep late in. The view of SD bay was amazing and there's a little balcony just big enough to stand outside on. Overall it was an awesome stay and we were both thoroughly pleased. Great hotel!

Super cute and clean for the gardening fan

  • Mar 26, 2012
Booked my room based on several factors. I was looking for a hotel in Dontown San Diego that had parking, breakfast and in room amenities like fridge, etc. Thought the pictues posted online looked cozy and added a homey feel to the property. All my needs were met. Hotel parking was only $10/day--way better than the $20-40 other, larger hotels were charging. Free Continental breakfast was mostly ready at 6am--great becasue I was in SD for a race and wanted to get some food in me before I went to the start line. Most hotels have breakfast at 7am, so pleased to find out I could take advantage of the food. Staff were friendly at check-in and saw them sweeping the courtyard/parking lot to keep it immaculate. Room was what you would expect for a Best Western of that age and size, but my friend and I had plenty of room. The room looked recently refurbished with clean carpet and newish bedding and the (small) bathroom had new tile, fixtures, glass shower and rainfall showerhead and good water pressure. Location is just north of the GasLamp district, so you get a great short walk to restaurants/nightlife without having to be disturbed by traffic and revelers in the wee hours of the morning. Best surprise feature was all the plants in pots and planters around the courtyard. My friend, a gardener, was speechless at the size, variety and colorfulness of all the plants. If you have ever stayed in a hotel with dead palms or bushes in the planters and felt depressed because of it,you will certainly appreciate all the flowers and succulents around the offices and rooms. Also a small viewing deck on top of the roof with more plants for meditation and quiet time. Would definitely stay here again!

Small, but friendly

  • Cali Girl 51

The rooms are quite "cozy" (a wee bit tight & small, especially the bathrooms), however the staff is quite friendly and accomodating. We were surprised to find no fan in the tiny bathroom, as the opening of the equally tiny window was not terribly efficient in clearing out the dampness of the shower. The room was clean, if compact. The walls were the traditionally non-soundproof type. The complimentary breakfast was unexpected hearty & replete with enough choices to please most any tastes. The grounds and roof garden are pleasant respites of green in the midst of a cityscape- a succulent lovers haven! The small fridge was nice to have, and the small market across the street made for a handy(if overpriced) snack/wine/essentials run.Parking was $10/day, which compared to other locations is low, but really--there should be no charge to guests for parking in the Inn lot--perhaps it would seem friendlier to add a couple dollars to the room price, and not charge separate for prkng.

I stayed at La Pensione Hotel because of the great value. This was part of the package that had been offered, but I was pleasantly surprised by this little gem, particularly with the location. It is a small place, but if you do not intend to spend all your time in the room, which I don't, it works. It's in the heart of Little Italy and is surrounded by some nice restaurants. The other plus was that public transportation was very accessible.

parking shock

  • billy kay
  • Feb 25, 2012
The only thing that stops me from rating this hotel as perfect is I found out when I was checking in that it would cost $16 per night to park in their garage!! Are you kidding? Parking should always be included. Where else am I going to park?they should at least mention it on the website. I am already paying good money to come to the place, you would think they could be less greedy and not charge for parking.I never heard of paying to park.

Clean room without frills!

  • justice4animals
  • Mar 13, 2012
Pros: just blocks from Gas Lamp District, flat screen TV, nice clean bathroom and room, free parking (limited spots). Cons: Room 112 - We had 1 pillow + 1 full-sized towel in the bathroom (for 2 people!) , no closet , no coffeemaker, no tissues in the tissue holder, cigarette hole in comforter, the ac/heater was missing a knob and was filthy (with dust) so thankfully the weather was great and we had no need to turn it on. If you aren't picky and just need a clean/ inexpensive room to crash, this is the place for you. But if you need certain amenities, spend a little more and go elsewhere or you will be disappointed.

We are happy with the hotel. We stayed at the Westin San Francis in San Francisco before. And we found this one offers better value - as the hotel is a lot newer and the interior (like the carpet, the lobby) is modern and clean. The room is very clean, it is quite large, nice bed with luxury bed linen.. The location is perfect for us to walk around in downtown San Diego. We walked to Little Italy, Gaslamp district for dinner and fun time in the evening. It is pretty safe. We did not like that the hotel room only provided plastic cups no glasses at all. When we called the staff quickly delivered two glasses to our room. Valet parking costs $32 per day. This was not clearly stated when we made booking.

I was at Palomar San Diego for business and expected the basic business accommodations: wifi (yes!), printing (no! really?). The room was missing basics like a pen, a working lamp, a list of hotel amenities, a pad of paper with the address so I could tell colleagues where to pick me up. And the one room phone (which is plenty) was not near the bed - bad for wake up calls. And that call at 10p to see if I liked my room service was a bit much. However, the staff was very friendly, the happy hour was very generous, the pool was wonderful, and I feel like they're on the right track.

The hotel is a walking distance away from the gaslamp district and is considered to be within downtown. The room had some dust in it and was rather modestly furnished. However, the price is attractive, the services are all standard (free wifi, breakfast, wake up calls, room amenities) and overall this is a nice bargain. Would recommend to anyone on a budget!

Staff friendly and informative. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was good too and a great view from the balcony. Being in the Gaslamp district it was noisy at night especially on Saturday but the action was right at your finger tips. I didn't have any trouble sleeping. Lots of places to eat and people were friendly. Close to Hortons Plaza and other areas within walking distance. Great transportation as well.

Decor is very much "old 1920's hotel" which was fun. the suites are large, with small kitchen (dishes, microwave, refrid), pull out sofa and bed. The rooms on the front side of the hotel are noisy on weekend nights though. The breakfast (toast, cereal, etc) on the roof was a nice touch, and then have games and books there as well. Parking EXPENSIVE, but there are other options near by (although no in-out privlages except with valet). Right in gaslight, not far from the action. If you are at convention center is about 6 blocks, which was a bit far for kids to walk at the end of the day.

The hotel was nice and lovely. The room was spacious. The rooftop bar had a really good view, but it was a little too cold for me even with the firepits. The downstairs bar/restaurant is a little bit pricey but is convenient. The location is GREAT! It is sooo close to everything! Can't beat that price for the location. Overall, I had a great time here :)

Hotel was clean and staff was friendly. The Table 509 restaurant was clean with great staff and great food and drinks. The bar on the 9th floor was fun and entertaining, but closes early. The hotel was in a great location, within walking distance to most everything downtown. Will definitely stay here again!

Location is minutes from Gaslamp Area. Many restaurants, shopping, and attractions are within walking distance of hotel. Nice heated pool and hot tub. One BIG drawback was the $26.00 parking PER DAY!!! With the amount of money spent at the hotel, the least they could do is to throw in free parking. The cost to park was ridiculous!!!

The B&B was in a great location very close to Little Italy. The rooms were clean and spacious and the vibe was romantic. The best part was the free breakfast which was top tier and made from scratch. Very good value for the accomodations and perks!

This B&B is a gem! [...] is a wonderful hostess and the gourmet breakfast served was outstanding. Our room was immaculate and the bed was very comfortable, offering great value. Located in Little Italy and close to downtown San Diego makes this a far better choice than staying at any of the larger hotels in the area. Don't miss this experience.

The hotel was amazing and I greatly appreciated everything they had to offer, but when it came to the financial part, needless to say it is 4 days later and they still cannot figure out how to work their accounting. So, if you decide to stay, be sure you make sure they know what they are doing before you hand them your credit card.

Description
Hip, open-plan hotel in historic Gaslamp QuarterThe Keating is a small, 35-room hotel in the center of the Gaslamp Quarter of downtown San Diego. Designed by Pininfarina (read: Ferrari and Maserati) and opened in 2007, the hotel prides itself on its unconventionality and caters to people with active lifestyles. On site are the Sway Lounge, a chic nightclub with an underground NYC ambience, a spa offering Swedish stress-relief, a pizzeria, Club diVino and the MerK restaurant. The Keating also offers meeting facilities and in-room couple's massage and aromatherapy. 3 Reasons To Stay: Cutting-edge, Pininfarina-designed boutique hotel in a listed, historic 1890s building Located in the vibrant Gaslamp Quarter near San Diego's major attractions and entertainment venues Fine dining, Italian wine collection and exclusive wine tastings from local wineries The Keating RoomsThe 35 luxurious 'stanzas' (guest rooms) and suites feature customized furnishings, such as spacious closets, ergonomic chairs, and custom-design beds by Pininfarina. Many aspects of the 1890s building, like mahogany fittings and stainless steel, remain. The loft-style rooms feature no interior walls: the traditional bathroom/bedroom division is replaced by an open floor plan. Resin and concrete floor treatments eliminate the need for carpeting. Expansive ceilings and the building's original exposed brick walls complement the decoration. The Keating is located in the heart of downtown San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, walking distance from the Convention Center, the major hotels, plenty of dining and pubs and nightlife. The design of The Keating is very modern - in fact it was designed by the guys who work for Ferrari. The rooms have exactly what you need: flat screen TV with HD satellite, free wifi, a roomie shower, a warm bed and cookies when you get into bed! It's small and quaint but has a great city vibe to it. Well price as well.

Great House

  • Love Doves
  • Jul 19, 2010
The large room Garden Room) and bathroom met or exceeded our expectations for a relaxing getaway weekend. The large very comfortable bed in the quiet location made for restful sleep. We are walkers and enjoyed the fact we had little need for the car once there--Downtown San Diego, the Gaslight District, and Balboa Park were all within reasonable walking distance. Reading the morning paper in the rear garden was pleasant and relaxing, as was sitting on the covered porch out of the afternoon sun. The only glitch was upon check-in. We had notified staff to expect us at 6:00pm, but heavy traffic put us over an hour behind schedule. We arribed frustrated , tired, and hot and were really looking foreward to the afternoon wine, which is scheduled from 5;00-7:00 p.m. When my wife mentioned at check-in how ready we were for the wine, the attendant replied "Too bad, I just put it away!" A little more flexibility in the interest of customer service would go a long way--perhaps holding a small plate and a drink for late check-ins? Indoor seating for breakfast is limited and there can be a 15-20 min wait when the inn is full--just plan ahead. Other than this less than glorious start, we would rate this experience on a par of the better B&Bs where we have stayed.

Great Location, Good Staff, Great Stay

  • MisterMaGruber
  • Apr 27, 2012
Pros: Great location. Clean Rooms. Friendly staff. Altitude Sky-lounge. Free Salt-water taffy. Cons: A pool would have been nice for this price, but honestly this really isn't a con as we knew beforehand that this hotel had no pool. The hotel is located right in the heart of the Gaslamp District. We were a 5 minute walk away from the convention center and a 10 minute walk from a plethora of amazing restaurants. The staff was friendly. The rooms were clean. The beds were soft. Overall a great stay.

Pleasant Surprise!

  • Jentry
  • Dec 27, 2011
I usually stay at the Double Tree in San Diego's Gas Lamp. This is my first time at the Andaz and was pleasantly surprised. I received the AAA rate for one of their larger rooms. Stepping out of my car at the Valet, I was greeted by a friendly an attendant who took my bags. By the time I entered the lobby, a gentleman working off an iPad had my room key ready and was offering to take my bags to the room. I was quite impressed. I was informed that most of the chips, chocolates, juices and coffees in the room where complimentary. The room key needed only to be waved neared the latch to unlock, making it easy for me to get in with my hands full of luggage. The room was very well decorated in a modern style and I felt very much at home. Other reviewers have mentioned a musty smell, which I also noticed, but it was minor and not unusual for such buildings approaching 100 years. The location was ideal in central SD Gas Lamp. I never made it to the rooftop lounge or pool; however I could see people returning at night seemed to be enjoying themselves. I was staying on business and will definitely stay at the Andaz again. I have already given raving recommendations to my coworkers.
