What travelers to Downtown - Gaslamp Quarter are saying

I haven't been to many cities out west, but so far San Diego is pretty much the most amazing urban area I've ever visited. First of all, the climate is awesome so every day is the most glorious day of weather ever. In that respect, you can have TONS of fun for free just by walking around outside and exploring parks, boardwalks, etc. Take a 10 minute drive west at any point and you will encounter breathtaking Pacific cliffs and crashing waves. I think Balboa Park is a must see - you could easily spend three days there just walking around enjoying the sunshine and gardens and visiting the dozens of museums. We went to the San Diego Zoo which was also awesome - SO much to see and learn about (we got there at opening and barely had enough time to see everything before closing). It's a non-profit organization so their proceeds go directly toward animal care & conservation. La Jolla is also a fun place to go walk around the little cliff trail and enjoy the view (though the adjacent neighborhood restaurants/bars are quite expensive). La Jolla is also a great place to view wildlife (tons of pelicans, terns, seals, sea lions) but I was horrified/saddened at the amount of people who were approaching the sea lions resting on the beach/rocks. There are signs everywhere saying don't approach or disturb marine life yet everyone just HAD to get a stupid Instagram shot of themselves getting illegally close to wildlife. If you go, please respect the animals and obey the law! As for dining, The Donut Bar is a must! Donuts as large as your face in interesting, drool-worthy flavors (red velvet, s'mores, Samoa, Pop-Tart, creme brulee, etc.) as well as cold brew coffee and chocolate milk on tap! We went on Friday and all the workers were dressed up as Disney princesses with Disney music playing over the speakers. When I asked why they said every Friday was a different dress-up theme. It's just a funky little shop with creatively delicious donuts! Our hotel was also near the Little...

San Diego is great! My husband and I love it so much that we have decided to buy a small business there, so we can live there in the winter. Most folks around us in Michigan choose Florida as a second home, but we find California so much better. With a direct flight, it is less that 5 hours to get there. People are friendly, like minded, health conscious, there are great vegetarian dining options, and iactively trying to conserve the environment is the norm.

San Diego is amazing as it was my first time exploring the city and also celebrating my boyfriend's birthday. The historic old town and Coronado island are amazing. There are a lot and I mean a whole lot of things to do and I'm just amazed by the city. Sure the drive was long and quite scenic at some points but it sure pays off. There are other places we visited and things done but I'm sure San Diego will cater to your every interest.

Stroll Victorian streets in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter

San Diego, California, may just be the closest thing to paradise in the continental U.S. Balmy, inviting temperatures year-round and a lively beach scene mean that visitors will want those long summer days to go on and on. Surfers glide seamlessly through the waters, hoping to ride in on the next break, outdoor cafes are filled with the sound of families grabbing lunchtime snacks, and historic districts like downtown’s Gaslamp Quarter house Victorian buildings, archways and old industrial structures. San Diego is a destination for business or pleasure - the Convention Center hosts regular events while the kids will love the zoo, and sports fans can live it up at a Padres home game.

Things to see and do

The city's Gaslamp Quarter is in the heart of the Californian city on the edge of San Diego Bay, a location that gives visitors easy access to San Diego International Airport (SAN) via cabs or the light rail Green line. This central location also means that the majesty of San Diego is right outside the door of nearly every Downtown - Gaslamp Quarter hotel.

Balboa Park

Visitors will be hard-pressed to take in all the splendor of Balboa Park in only a day or two. Many of Balboa Park's renowned museums were built in the style of old Baroque- and Spanish architectural buildings. In addition, the historic green space spans 1,200 acres and contains botanical gardens and natural vegetation-lined trails for an afternoon stroll. The jewel of Balboa Park, however, is the legendary San Diego Zoo.

USS Midway Museum

San Diego's rich history also has roots in national defense, and the city remains an integral part of the U.S. military complex. Many Downtown - Gaslamp Quarter hotels are less than a mile away from Navy Pier and the USS Midway aircraft carrier, which is now an interactive museum. The carrier's deck is loaded with 29 restored planes, and visitors can tour the ship's brig (jail), engine room and flight deck. Celebrate the Fourth of July at the phenomenal party hosted by the USS Midway Museum every year, and enjoy a birds-eye view across the city's extravagant Big Bay Fireworks show.

Old Town trolley tours

One of the easiest ways to experience San Diego is by hopping on board a trolley. The city's Old Town trolleys make several stops in the Gaslamp Quarter, transporting visitors across greater San Diego. Riders of the historic vehicles, which tend to be conveniently hop-on/hop-off, have no-hassle access to Balboa Park, Old Town and Coronado Island.

Where to stay – Gaslamp Quarter hotels

Walk the halls of some of San Diego’s oldest hotels in the Gaslamp Quarter. The cornerstone of the district's historic accommodations is the US Grant, a Luxury Collection Hotel, built in 1910 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For second-to-none views of the bay, especially at sunset, book a stay at the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Hotel before sipping a sophisticated cocktail in the lobby. Travelers have their pick of many other 3-, 4- and 5-star hotels in the area too, including the Horton Grand and the Westin San Diego. Per night rates in the Quarter typically begin at around $175.

Special events

San Diego Film Festival

In September, the Gaslamp Quarter plays host to one of the film villages of the San Diego Film Festival. For five days there are independent films, celebrities galore, interviews, early sneak peeks of award-season films and more. Each year, more than 20,000 film buffs attend the annual event.

Comic-Con International

The biggest name in comic conventions, this dynamite event has exploded in popularity in recent years, attracting everyone from comic book artists to A-list celebs. Held in July at the San Diego Convention Center, the four-day event has become so renowned since its inception in 1970 that sessions spill over into adjacent satellite locales.

Best time to visit

Visitors who reside in regions with four distinct seasons should visit San Diego between November and February for indulgently warm weather. During the winter months, the average highs hover around 65 degrees Fahrenheit, with tons of sunshine and average humidity levels. Summer weather in the city is equally spectacular as the temperatures typically range from 60 to 75 degrees daily, and there are few rain showers, giving visitors ample opportunity to surf, sunbathe and otherwise live it up.
