For those who wish to save a bit of money or have sensitive stomachs like me, stay at the Days Inn and choose a room with a kitchenette. Although a bit small and lacking a few utensils, it gets the job done.

Only stayed two nights in the Sofia Hotel but I really enjoyed myself. It is a short walk to the great restaurants and bars of the Gas Lamp District. The rooms were clean and nice but a little small. Overall I was very happy with the hotel, the service and the amenities.

The staff and facilities were fantastic. From the valet to the maid service, everyone was very helpful. The hotel was spotless and tastefully equipped. My only disappointment was the room size. Luckily I was traveling alone, otherwise the room would have been too small.

We used this hotel for an overnighter in San Diego. In our case, we took the Amtrak train and the hotel was just a few blocks walk up Broadway from the Sante Fe station.Convenient to tram stop and buses if you have left your car at home. (no idea what kind of parking is available).
Larger than normal room was clean and quiet even though an active street was outside. (we were on the fifth floor)
Fridge in room is a plus and a complimentary bottled water was a nice touch. TV was big screen type but only had all analog stations . No HD when we were there so picture on TV was so-so.
Bed OK but I didn't get the impression it is any different than any other hotel in spite of hoopla.

- Jan 18, 2012
The staff was friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. Convenient location from the airport, but why is there not a free shuttle that could link from the other Westin which is about 4 blocks away. Easy to get the bay, Gaslamp Quarter, and Little Italy.
You can rent a car from the hotel, which is great to travel up the coast.
Skip eating at the Horton Restaurant and Bar, overpriced and not so great service.
Rooms are great, and quiet. Love the Westin!

Had a great time at the hotel. The room was perfect as we upgraded to 27th floor view room for an extra $20 per night. My wife enjoyed it. The only problem was a party at ground level that could be heard until 10pm in the room on Thursday night. The Fox Grill with free internet and the service was great. The parking charge was in addition to the room charge but what do you expect from San Diego. All in All we will be back....

Our room was very comfortable, and we had great views of the harbor. Parking was $27/night, but you were able to go in and out as many times as you needed to. Hotel restaurants were all closed for private bowl game events when we were there, which was frustrating. The gaslamp quarter was about a 10 minute walk away, but the walk back at night was somewhat creepy. I would probably take a cab back next time.

Hotel was clean, staff was capable. Our balcony was 4 feet over the parking lot with a wonderful view of the Holiday Inn next door. Wireless signal was weak, good thing the Holiday Inn signal was strong and unencrypted so we used that instead. Walking distance to sport fishing boats and a few nice restaurants across the street. Room was quiet, Good value for the money.

Not a bad place to stay. Essentially a motel renovated with some upscale decorations and flair. Room was small, functional and clean (except the ac air filter). Restuarant was ok, they swept the floor around me during breakfast. Upscale menu was ok but limited. Valets were good. Deskstaff acceptable. They don't tell you on the website but valet parking is mandatory and $22 a day as of Nov 2011. Great location if you want to walk to Little Italy or even the bay/Spanish Landing. To far to walk to Gaslamp through downtown and bums sleeping on sidewalk.

I recommend this hotel, the location is very good, its basically walking distance of all downtown (A few blocks from Horton for your shopping and a bunch of nice restaurants). The staff was very helpful and friendly. The hotel rooms exceeded our expectations and the lounge was a great place to hang out. Just be careful with the valet price.

Average Hotel, staff made up for the issue. Our room was not one of the renovated ones and the HVAC unit / Thermostate did not work very well. Temperature fluctuated in the room by over 10 degrees. Exhaust fan in bathroom was noisey. They did give us keys to the room next door if we wanted to move/sleep there. Room also had no blankets or hair dryer, but were provided quickly.

We stayed 4 nights on a trip from PA, first time in CA and my trip was enjoyable. Basic amenities were provided, Pool and Jacuzzi were available outdoors, continental breakfast would have been nice.
Our last night in the hotel the power went out around 4pm, we had to be up by 6am the next day for our flights. Our phone batteries were dead, we had no lights, no alarms. I feel that hotels should be more prepared for unfortunate situations such as a power outage. Maybe have had back up batteries for the alarm clocks they provided, some candles; and if continental breakfast was provided, they'd have had food to provide their guest even at a small cost. We hadn't eaten since 2pm and had to go until 6am the next day before getting a bite to eat with all stores being closed or not accessible.
Other than this minor situation our stay was enjoyable and would return.

For the money, this is a good option. The shuttle service is worth a bundle. We used it to go to SeaWorld, the zoo, Sea Harbor and the airport. This saved us at least forty dollars a day. The drivers were GREAT. The breakfast, although not the best, is a definite bonus.

When booking thing hotel i was a bit scared of the reviews, but after personally testomony i can say it wasnt bad, room looked just like picture and the bed were actually pretty comfy. Bathroom was a little small but plenty of hot water. i didnt like that the cleaning ladies came knocking on your door early like at 9am when lets be realistic, its a vacation and your probably just getting up at that time. Breakfast should include everything instead of paying extra justbfor eggs and pancakes. Lacation was actually pretty good, decent distance from everything.

You can't beat this location in downtown San Diego for the price. The hotel staff was courteous and the amenities were on par with what I expected for the nightly rate that I paid. There is a YMCA workout room and a restaurant on site. It's a short walk to the harbor, Gaslamp District, public transportation, & other downtown locations.
We live in a world of: "you get what you paid for"....and you get that at the 500 West Hotel.

Our room was just above the lobby on E St. We had a very quiet room. The rooftop affords a fantastic view. You can have breakfast, work, play games, or take a nap on the roof. This hotel is simple and affordable. It was clean, and the staff was perfect. We loved it. Thank you for making this trip affordable and memorable. Our group had three rooms. The only complaints were that some people heard noise from the streets below, and some wanted eggs for breakfast so free wasn't enough for those folks. Free is usually pastries and cereal. I loved it and would stay again.

The hotel is conveniently located for shopping, beaches, Balboa park and other attractions. The rooms and beds were comfortable and clean. The internet did NOT work and when we approached the staff they just threw their hands up and said "sorry its out of our control". The website said they have a continental breakfast to include bagels and waffles.... In fact, all that was ever offered was cheese, a small assortment of fruit, and frozen croissants or banana muffins which were never fresh or completely thawed.

Overall great experience and fun trip. I would say that I don't think it's a spot for guests looking for a quiet stay. Love the Ocean
- Sep 13, 2011
Good location if you are doing stuff downtown. Went to a concert at the House of Blues and was able to walk there. About 5 blocks away, not bad. Room was clean and the bed was really nice. Nice view of the ocean, between other high rise buildings. They only have valet parking which cost $32 a day, which was kind of uncomfortable for me. I needed something out of the car and they brought it up to me. Felt like my car was held hostage, BUT, when I called for the car, they had it ready for us right away! Nothing was missing! Overall, pleasant stay. Nice Hotel.

Great hotel, beautiful grounds, and near to everything we wanted to see. We stayed in the spacious oversized garden view and really enjoyed having the kitchen that we utilized for breakfast, and enabled us to keep snacks on hand for the evenings. We really enjoyed the coy ponds and the 2 Macaws on property. Our boys loved the large pool and we took advantage of the jacuzzi. Pleasantly Surprised

Hotel was exactly what you'd expect from a Hyatt and we were pleased with our stay. We were in the Bay II part of the hotel and were surprised to get a room with a full patio and fire pit. The parking lot was taken up with a party tent that had loud music playing all night, which was a little annoying but we didn't let it bother us. Nice pool area with a big spa. Great location right by the bay and it was nice to be able to walk right out of the hotel and around the bay. Also ate at the restaurant at the hotel and had a great meal (although somewhat overpriced).

Stayed at the 600sf suite right next to the marina. Waking upto sounds of seagulls snorting of seals. The suite is ideal for families. Morning walks along the pier. Lot of amenities in walking distance, but stop by a grocery store before checking in for essentials. And if going to Sea World which is about 20min. walking distance, if with kids take a cab to save $14 parking. Great weekend trip.

I live here in San Diego but my husband and I wanted a nice get away for the weekend. This did not disappoint the room was recently renovated and was very nicely done. We were just off the water so the view was fantastic, we were able to see the fireworks from Sea world and wake up to the great ocean view in the morning. Their grounds were beautifully landscaped and at the very front of the hotel they have an enclosed pool with two seals who were rescued which was a really cool feature. We were given complimentary ferry boat tickets so we ventured out that evening to partake in the ride, it went from the Bahia to their sister hotel the Catamaran and back. We will definitely book here again for another visit.

The hotel was really nice, loved the staff, location, amenities, had a great view from the room. They had upgraded our room from Garden view to the bay view, even before we got there.
The only thing they need to upgrade/change would be that the hotel is little older, carpet had some stains on it. furniture was old, bathroom had some rust as well.
But all in all it was perfect, recommend it to everyone.

New Years Night o Fun

We stayed at this hotel on New Years Eve because we didn't want to drink and drive. It was a fantastic experience and we will definitely stay again.
All of the staff, from the valet guys to housekeeping was friendly and happy and sincere. They are a huge part of what made our stay great. And the bed in the room was super comfy, great to sleep late in.
The view of SD bay was amazing and there's a little balcony just big enough to stand outside on. Overall it was an awesome stay and we were both thoroughly pleased. Great hotel!

Fantastic view. The room was very pleasant with a sectioned off bedroom (by french doors) from the living/seating area. The living/seating area had a nice desk for hooking up a laptop computer. Excellent access to the gaslamp district. The hotel itself has a nice lounge for a nitecap and/or breakfast the next morning. Recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to explore the gaslamp district, which was within a 5 minute easy walk.

First night had me wondering as a couple of hours after we checked in someone else walked into or room. When their keys were disabled ours were too but we didn't know it until the next day when we returned from church. Room is spacious, maids extremely frriendly, room is clean but worn. we are on second floor by elevator as my husband is in a wheelchair. Upstairs halls could be wider as is difficult getting in and out of room and on elevator.
