We stayed here while participating in the Sea Otter Classic. They were accommodating to the cyclists and allowed us to keep our bikes in our room. Room was nice, clean and had every amenity expected. It's a one minute walk to downtown which has limited parking, so it was great to be able to walk to dinner and the local bars.
Continental breakfast was limited but sufficient and they had cookies in the lobby at night. Staff was friendly & helpful.
Only drawback is that it's across the street from the fire station, so we were woken in night by sirens... but it was minor.
We are looking forward to staying here again!

We've been staying at the Colton Inn off and on over the last 35 years. It's always been a good decision! The rooms are clean and comfortable with a fireplace, refrig, and microwave. The bed was warm and cozy! There's a free continental breakfast available in the Lobby but you'll need to take it back to your room or, if the weather is nice, out to the back common area deck. It can get pretty crowded in the Lobby while everyone is trying to gather their food. The Staff is pleasant and friendly. It's a great value in an area that can get very expensive!

We had a pleasant stay at the Abrego. The hotel is a bit away from the usual tourist area. It's about a 20 min walk to the water; parking in town is fairly inexpensive. The Abrego is an older hotel which has been upgraded. There is a restaurant which we did not use.

Not too bad
-

For the price I wouldn't say the room was bad. I think we paid like $50 for the night. We drove down to the beach and ate dinner. The room was clean but the hotel DOES NOT have A/C. It was still nice and cool bc the room had a fan but in the hotter months this might not be good. The room was clean but the bathroom was a little gross. Again, for $50 it wasn't bad. The room was big and the landscaping was nice. The hot tub was nice to relax in at night. If your a "frills" type of person you might not like it but for the price it was ok for a night or two.

The staff were friendly and amenable. The location is good, easy walking distance to downtown Monterey. The rooms could be improved, the decor is old, the bathroom light did not work consistently or the heating. But for the price and location it was ok.

Comfortable Place in Monterey
-
John Needed a Get-Away
- Mar 6, 2011
The bed mattress was the most comfortable that I have slept on. This was one of the reasons for returning to the Portola. Service was very good. Only complaint I have is the price value of the movies offered, I paid $17.99 to watch an average box office movie (the "Traveler") and the selection was very very limited. The pool was not heated and the water temperature was cold. Nice English pub a block away called the Crown and Anchor. Decent selection of ales on tap and good fish and chips.

Great value, convenient right off Route 1 and within bicycle ride or walk to Fisherman's wharf and Cannery Row ( 1.3 mile) and Del Monte shopping Center (across the street).. Very clean, well maintained, large pool, plenty of parking, friendly helpful staff. Hotel is older, multi-story,could use updating.. The room was quite cold at first, but we turned the heat on and went to dinner and it was toasty the rest of our stay. A path starts across the street from the hotel and goes to Fisherman's Wharf and connects to a longer path that starts along side the sand dunes and goes to Pacific Grove. We were told it goes 25 miles, but we did not go that far on either end. We sampled the middle and it felt safe, no steep inclines, and beautiful bay views. We rode past Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf and along the bay.

It's right off Highway 1 and across from a popular mall. We came early and they were able to let in to our room. It was a corner room in the back, clean and comfortable. Even though it's right next to the highway I didn't hear car noise at night and slept well.
We also enjoyed the hotel restaurant which has an award-winning salad bar, which includes Marianne's ice cream or sorbet(a popular Santa Cruz ice cream maker).

It's an OK hotel/motel close to downtown Monterey. There are quite a few others in the same neighborhood, but this one is one of the closest if you want to walk to downtown restaurant or a bar. There is a newer (more expensive?) part that is a little bit nicer, but the older one across the street is not bad either. Overall, nothing extraordinary, but rather nice and quiet - perfectly adequate for a weekend's stay.

The hotel was very clean and in a good location. The parking in the main part of the hotel was slim, but the extra parking across the street was not a hassle. The only bad parts of the stay were the very hard bed and the fact that the staff at the front desk did not seem to be there very often. I slept okay, but my husband had a very hard time sleeping because of the hard bed. When we got there, the front desk staff were nowhere to be found, and the morning we left, they were not there either, even though it was at least 8AM.

Nice staff. Room was nice. Wasn't expecting hardwood floors. Looked nice but made room a little cold. Hardwood floors also made for loud upstairs neighbors. I thought we'd be closer (walking distance) to Cannery Row, but it ended up being a short drive. Great local breakfast/lunch spot up the street (Kathy's). Great price for the area!

I stayed 1 night at this motel with my kids. Everything was perfect except the fact that I was on the bottom floor and I heard everything from above. I called the front desk and they must of informed the people on the second floor and the moving stopped. The room was spacious, affordable, and had everything that we were looking for.

Visiting from the Midwest
- Nov 22, 2011
we had booked a double bed but when we sat in our bed it was Sandy like someone had gone to the beach and the staff didn't change the sheets. We called to complain and they upgraded us to a king bedroom with fireplace. That was a nice gesture and made the trip worthwhile. The room was clean and the decor was nice. We would come back again.

My mom and I only stayed one night, but we really enjoyed staying at the Mariposa. We had a double queen room with fireplace and balcony that was very modern and clean.
The front desk worker was pleasant. He helped us make a best POA for the night and next day and even gave us a coupon for free appetizer at a restaurant.
Our only complaint was the continental breakfast was slightly picked over by the time we got there at 9am.

We loved the location of this hotel, close to the Pacific Highway but out of the hustle of Cannery Row. The room was clean, the staff was great, and the continental breakfast was just what we like. The only concern I had is that the bed was a little small and creaks every time someone moves in the middle of the night. All in all though, it was perfect price for what we needed.

We were looking for something cheap, and this ended up being the cheapest rate for the night. Not a shabby place but you do get what you pay for. None of the appliances worked, and when the heater was turned on the whole room smelled gross.

Unbeatable motel for the price
-

My wife, daughter and I were in town for a funeral so we were just looking for clean and quiet at a reasonable price. Our expectations were not high but we were pleasantly surprised. We were able to check in early, which one reviewer said was not permitted. Then again, December in Monterey is not peak season.
The place was clean, quiet, pleasantly appointed and included muffins, apples juice and coffee in the morning. The owners were very polite and friendly and the only reason we didn't give it a 5 was there was no restaurant there. But we'd rather eat on Fisherman's Wharf anyway.
Next time we're in town, we'll stay here instead of the pricier hotels we usually stay in, and we'll use the money we save on lodging - eating seafood at the many wonderful local restaurants instead.

Convenient to Rt. 1, but difficult to find in the dark on way back from Fisherman's Wharf. Reasonable rates, clean, not luxurious. Free coffee, juice and packaged Danish for breakfast -- have to eat in room.

Vagabond in Monterey

My sister and I stayed at the Vagabond one night for a quick beach trip. I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised - the beds were comfortable, room and bathroom was large, and there was a microwave and refrigerator in the room to store our ice chest stuff. Vagabond also offered a Continental breakfast. There wasn't any fruit that morning, but there were 2 choices for cereal, plastic covered pastry and bread choices along with the coffee and juices. I had plenty to eat with just cereal and toast. This added to the values of the motel by allowing me to avoid a breakfast cost. I would stay there again.

My boyfriend and I went here to help fix our relationship. we got a little lost but then found it. It is in a great location. Walking distance to downtown. We were looking for a placs to get sure good drinks we went to mucky ducks, wasnt too good. So we went back to our room and turned on the fireplace and cuddled up with a movie. The bed was big and comfy. Our heater didnt work very well so I was a little cold all night. I would turn the fireplace on but it had a timer so I coukdnt leave it.on all night.
