What travelers to Flagstaff are saying

I love Flag! The people, restaraunts, hiking, snow skiing I just love it all. Only one drawback...the traffic. Sometimes it seems like I-40 was diverted straight through town. It must be good for the businesses though.
Clifford S. Aug 13, 2015
Love Flagstaff and NAU. A lot of outdoor activities.
Timothy P. Jul 11, 2015
Didn't spend any time there.

Flagstaff offers miles of trails and geologic wonders

Located at 7,000 miles above sea level, visitors from nearby regions of the southwest United States enjoy the reprieve Flagstaff offers from hot, desert summers. Travelers from more distant climes appreciate the city for its beauty, culture and history. Those who are new to Flagstaff can expect temperate summers and chilly winters. Founded by pioneers in 1876, the city is now best known as the home of Northern Arizona University and for the youthful vibe pervading its streets. Students sip pints in bars like The Mogollon—where you might even see cowboys—and historic venues like The Museum Club make for a memorable night on a dance floor full of trees. Day trips to the Grand Canyon ensure that geology fans are satisfied, while winter sports prevail between November and February.

Things to see and do

Pueblos

Flagstaff offers a cultural and historical experience with its nearby Native American monuments and villages (pueblos). The Navajo National Monument is located only nine miles north of the town. Take a guided tour of the cliff dwellings, which were painstakingly carved into red sandstone canyons, and soak up the Puebloan way of life at the museum exhibits.

Wupatki National Monument is also a short drive from Flagstaff. Enjoy a self-guided tour of the largest pueblo in the park, right behind the visitor center. Visitors can enjoy its rich history and the geyser-like blowhole, which shoots spumes of water high into the air from an underground sea cave.

Grand Canyon

A visit to the Grand Canyon is on countless bucket lists. This awe-inspiring National Park is located just 80 miles outside of Flagstaff. Catch the Grand Canyon Railway in town for a day trip you won't forget, and consider a nostalgic stay at the luxurious Grand Canyon Railway Hotel.

Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument

This mountain provides a fascinating geological view into the evolution of an ecosystem and the formation of new landscapes. Today, most of the mountain remains untouched while the young forest develops. Make sure to stay on the designated trails because the 1,000-year-old formation is still extremely vulnerable to erosion. Follow aptly-named routes like the Lava Flow Trail and the Lenox Crater Trail, or stop in at the visitor center for tips and shade.

Skiing

If you're visiting in the winter months, try out Flagstaff's nearby slopes. Snowbowl rises 11,500 feet above sea level, and has both challenging black trails for the experts as well as easy routes for beginners—who can also use the surface conveyors. Gain access to the Kachina Peaks Wilderness for a backcountry skiing experience.

Hiking

Whether you're seeking vigorous exercise in the cool mountain air or a quick and easy daytime hike between meetings, you can find it in Flagstaff. Experienced hikers will enjoy the 4.8-mile Humphrey Trail -, which requires good hiking boots and lots of water for an optimal and safe trek. If you're looking for a shorter trail, walk the .75-mile Lava River Cave, but be warned that this one's not for claustrophobics.

Where to stay

Are you a history buff? Spend a few nights at accommodations in historic downtown among Flagstaff's various restaurants and bars. If nostalgia is what you seek, spend a night like motorists of the past in a motel on Route 66. Rent a condo at venues like the Flagstaff Resort, where sports facilities, outdoor pools and organized activities mean that guests won't even have to leave the complex.

Best time to visit

Temperatures during the winter months average between 20 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and the nearby slopes are usually covered in snow. During the summer, things heat up, and Flagstaff is a great location for hiking or sightseeing. The best time to visit will depend upon whether you want to traverse the pistes or see local attractions.
