Anchorage is located in the south-central region of Alaska. A
cosmopolitan port city, the municipality is defined by Muldoon Road to the
east, Rabbit Creek Road to the south and Cook Inlet to the north and west.
These include Eagle River and Chugiak to the north and Girdwood to the south. Alaska
is well-known for its winters -- but Anchorage is also frequented in the
summer, when the days are long and the temperatures are moderate. Many people
consider the period between May and early September to be the best time to
visit Anchorage.
The Anchorage area is home to moose, brown and black bears,
Dall sheep, and many migratory bird species. A visitor should be able to find
moose fairly easily by driving any neighborhood near Anchorage, in the foothills
of the Chugach Mountains.
Alyeska Resort in Girdwood about 40 miles south of Anchorage
on the Seward Highway is Alaska's largest alpine ski resort. Alyeska often has
the highest annual snowfall of any ski area in North America and has a wide
array of intermediate and expert terrain. Chugach Powder Guides offers
helicopter and snow-cat skiing in the Chugach Mountains with a professional
guide for advanced intermediate to expert skiers and boarders.

The location of this hotel is perfect if you are intereseted in the downtown area. The room was clean and the staff was helpful. The beds weren't the most comfortable in the world and a mini fridge would have been nice, but other than that, no real complaints.

An old hotel that could stand a lot of upgrades. Still a good value for the money and a staff that is friendly and accommodating. I would surely stay there again, and recommend it to friends. It is close to the airport so there is not much within walking distance but it is only a ten minute cab ride into town.

Just needed a place to sleep and shower

This is copied and pasted directly from my Yelp review:
Really I think this place deserves two stars, but I'm feeling nice and rounding up. I only stayed here one night so I can't comment on much, but this seems like a really strange hotel. Someone told me that it used to be an apartment building that was turned into a hotel. I can see that. It looks like it's in a state of renovation, as the carpeting in the hallways doesn't match, and the carpeting in the rooms is very old looking. The room was small but adequate. With the exception of the shuttle driver who picked me up from the airport, the staff members weren't super friendly. The bed wasn't particularly comfortable, but it wasn't rock hard or anything. The wall paper looked like it was from a cartoon map of Alaska drawn in the 1970s, and the carpet was old and a dark chocolate brown color.
The most striking thing about this hotel was my bathroom. It had a large jacuzzi tub/shower, but it was so deep that it was at least three feet above the floor! I'm 5'9" and it was a stretch getting in to shower. Only after my shower, as I felt like a giant towering several feet above the bathroom floor, did I see the step stool tucked underneath the sink. Very odd. It would not have been handicapped accessible, or really even accessible to shorter people.
Later, I heard a complaint from another guest that she had requested a handicapped accessible shower and the room she was checked in to was not. I believe I overheard the front desk clerk inform her that there are only three handicapped rooms and they were already in use. Sounds like poor planning on the hotel's part to me.

The hotel is decent, nothing super special. If you want something to do in the area that's in walking distance, think again. Midtown is as commercial as it comes, but the surrounding view of the city is one in a million. No city has the view that anchorage has.

Relaxation between Cruise & Denali trip
-

- Sep 16, 2011
Very nice small older hotel which has been updated ... friendly staff ... very clean ... excellent "continental" breakfast in former bar area of hotel. We were in one of the "backside" rooms and the window view directly over the alley and roofs wasn't too great ... but we did well relax a day and two nights before moving on to Denali. We would be pleased to return when/if in Anchorage!

We checked in and the receptionist was extremely helpful in locating us a room for early check in. The rooms are on the small side (but not as small as I expected based on other reviews so I was pleasantly surprised). The bed was super comfy (wish I didn't have to get up at 4AM to get to the airport!). Walked everywhere I wanted to go and even though it is on the edge of town, it was relatively convienent. The shuttle at $15.00 is a deal - but if there are 2 or more in your party not so much so - better off with a cab (unless the shuttle is per party). Looked like b'fast was basic (cereal, milk and fruit), Price was certainly right!!!

Small rooms, easy access to downtown anchorage, and an oscillating fan to boot.
The hotel was pretty basic but well kept and clean. I had a litte trouble regulating the temperature since my window opened to a hallway instead of to outside. The staff was very kind and set the room up with an oscillating fan before hand.
Walk three blocks and you are downtown, of course it's Anchorage so downtown isn't much.
Overall I had a nice stay.

Living rooms, bedrooms, and full kitchens all come with each suite at the intimate, 31-room boutique Anchorage Grand. Its the perfect option for anyone looking for space to spread out and prepare anything from coffee to a gourmet dinner. And with a superb downtown location, youll be within walking distance of the railroad, Denaina Convention Center, Performing Arts Center , and Saturday Market, as well as all of the downtown shopping and restaurants. Be sure to enjoy the free continental breakfast each morning. And dont miss the fresh-baked cookies, made at 3PM every day. Free high-speed internet, a business center, and great views of either the city or the inlet and mountains of the Alaska Range make the Anchorage Grand Hotel even more appealing. The Anchorage Grand is located in a former 1950s apartment building thats seen its share of history: it even survived the earthquake of 1964. Today, its been completely refurbished; dark woods and golds have revitalized the building in a formal, classic style, with streamlined furniture adding to its allure. But you wont find any attitude here, rather a low-key, boutique property friendly, personal service and modern amenities. Most guests here are drawn by the 500 square foot rooms, which provide sleeper sofa beds and enough space to spread out. Choose from 25 queen bed rooms (more privacy with a separate living room, kitchen, and 2 TVs), 4 king bed rooms (more open floor plan), or two double bed rooms (2 double beds, also an open floor plan). And since the suites feature a full kitchen with dishwasher, refrigerator, and microwave, theres everything you need to spend a day, a week, or a month.

Good value, good location
-
DaRose46
- May 13, 2011
The hotel is located two blocks from the major downtown streets of 4th and 5th within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants and attractions. The rooms are suites; mini-apartments like an extended stay hotel; nicely appointed and roomy though the building itself is charmless. Some exterior noise from trains and ships comes through which may be bothersome if you are sensitive to noise at night. My room smelled a tiny bit mustly on first entrance, but didn't bother me after 2 minutes. They have 0 amenities except packaged continental breakfast and a computer you can use in the basement. Good value if you need the space.

Description
Alaska Backpacker's Inn is Anchorage's newest backpacker's hostel. They are located in downtown Anchorage only a few minutes walk from all that downtown Anchorage has to offer. They are right around the corner from the train station and Alaska direct bus. The hostel contains 80 beds broken in small dorms (No more than 6 beds per dorm) and private rooms. Private rooms include cable TV (80 channels plus showtime) and Micro-fridges on each room. 2 shares have micro fridges as well. Other facilities include cable TV in a large common area which also has a Foosball table and vending machines, reading room, kitchen, lots of clean spacious shared bathrooms and much more. This summer are very exited to announce that have taken on the challenge of providing more private rooms due to the high demand. They will be offering updated rooms with an urban feel in the annex building (less than one block away on the same street). They are now providing full one bedroom private suites with full kitchens and bathrooms. Annex building is in the midst of transforming this summer into a sister hostel for ABI. In addition to adding more rooms, will also be offering dining room service. Guests will be able to enjoy a wide variety of menu items from the comfort of their rooms. In the process, they have given all the rooms their own temperature control gauge for individual comfort. With growth comes excitement and sometimes a bit of confusion. They look forward to and thank you for your business and patronage this summer. They are striving to meet as many of your needs as an economical and traveler friendly hostel can.

Compared to other hotels in Anchorage, this was a great deal. The room was large. The morning breakfast had many options and the service was good. The morning staff was a lot more fun than the night staff so checking out was more fun than checking in but that would be my only negative if I had to give one. We would stay here again.

It's a great place to stay for bush Alaskans because it is close to shopping that can be shipped back to the village. We will continue to stay here when we're in town.

The rooms were pretty and the beds were great. There is not really a view because it is in the middle of the city. Also, on one side of the hotel is a cemetery. But this hotel is very close to everything and can be walking distance to restaurants and the mall and shops. There is no pool, which was a little disappointing. We had fun anyway because we were trying to get away for a little while. The lobby is beautiful and the restaurants smelled good, but we did not go to either of them. Their coffee is from Starbucks and tea is from Tazo. It is one of the top few hotels in Anchorage as far as my opinion.

Anchorage rocks!

If you need a quick place to stay and don't mind being a little bit further from the downtown action, then the Ramada will work for you. It's in a quiet section of town and close to most everything. Isn't the Marriott, but then again, it's not $200 a night either. Good for a quick trip!

Building is outdated, rooms are small, but it's cheap, clean, and the staff couldn't be friendlier. A short walk to downtown shops and restaurants, and rear rooms have a nice view. Overall a good value on a budget!

It was okay for price but many negative things. Very poor breakfast, had 2 items begals or fruit, no shampoo, no extra blankets, no towles at the pool, hottub waas way to hot, no movies to order, no free parking, and one night smoke alarm went off all night. We were upgraded due to complications and the kitchen was good with large room. Very quite and they allowed dogs at no extra cost.

Babe from Bedford
- Jul 5, 2011
the beds were comfortable and the breakfast was convenient. The air conditioning didn't work. The view from our window was the side of another building (approx. 5 feet away). There weren't enough tables or chairs for guests to sit and eat breakfast, so guests were left to standing or sitting on the couch or overstuffed chair and balancing your paper plate on your lap.

My fiancee and I needed a place to stay for 10 hours between flights. It was easy to get to (quick and cheap cab ride). I was more impressed with the rooms than I was expecting. I wouldn't stay there if I was vacationing in Anchorage. It is not by anything that you could walk to. I highly recommend it for traveling through purposes.

Not much to report about. This was our last night in Anchorage and we needed somthing close to the airport because we had a 6:00am flight.
The staff was great, the room was comfortable and their shuttle got us to the airport on time. We were not able to take advantage of the breakfast but from past experience at Super 8's i'm sure it was good.

Stayed at the hotel because of late plane arrival so that friends did not have to travel all night to come get me. The hotel was prompt with the airport shuttle and accommodating. The room met my needs of providing a place for a few hours' sleep. The hotel will not be confused with a five-star, pricing seems appropriate for quality of stay.

Mixed experiences
-
AKZeb
- May 7, 2011
This was my second stay at this hotel, and my experiences were very different. The first time I stayed there I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and comfort of the room for the relatively low price. That made me pick this place again when I returned to Anchorage for a few more days. The second stay was definitely not as nice. I was in a room next to an elevator which dinged incessantly day and night. Half of the parking lot was closed for cleaning, which meant a long hike to my room. The vulture-like taxis always circling the parking lot made parking even more of a pain. The clerk who checked me in was friendly and helpful, but the subsequent clerks I dealt with were grumpy and inept. I originally booked two days [...], which were prepaid through the site. It was necessary for me to stay an extra day which I thought would be simple to accomplish. The clerk seemed genuinely annoyed with me that I had used [...], and told me (loudly, in front of everyone in the lobby) that since I had used [...]there was nothing she could do to add another day, and that I'd have to come back in the morning and check out and check back in (if they had rooms available). When I went back the next morning, the guy who helped me was very confused by the whole process and took at least 15 minutes to figure out how to let me pay for another night's stay. He told me it would be $109 for the additional night, but I later noticed a $300 charge had posted to my credit card. This required several calls to the hotel, leaving messages that weren't returned, before I finally got to speak to someone who could fix it. Finally, I don't know what "Free HSIA" in the room descriptions means, but it doesn't mean "Free High Speed Internet Access" as I assumed, since they charged me $10 a day for that. Overall the winter rates are reasonable for the room they provide. It's definitely not worth what they charge in summer. And since my last visit left me with a bad taste, I'll be looking for a different hotel for my work trips to Anchorage.

A Little Disappointing
-
Nana
- Jun 25, 2009
We liked the neatness room and the location was good. But the elevator was broken the whole time we were there. The repair people came several times, but didn't fix - so we needed to walk to 3rd floor room every time we wanted to go to our room...even after running the Anchorage Marathon...our reason for coming.

I really enjoyed my stay at the hotel. My only complaint is that the curtains do not close all the way. The shears do not keep out light. In Alaska it can be daylight up to 22 hours a day. It was hard to sleep.

The bed was comfortable is about all I can say positive about this place... The carpet turned my feet BLACK inside of 15 minutes of walking on it! The checkin/check out person was very sullen and disinterested in the transaction or me as a person. He did not know the directions to anything anybody asked him ! I reported the carpet issue and that the toilet was not functioning well to this person and he couldn't have cared less. I wonder if it even got to the right people? The neighborhood was awful...with striptease joints within a block or two. Never again ! The shuttle driver was friendly and very helpful zi owuld like to add...

I felt the price was way too expensive for what the room was...it was surrounded by strip clubs. The room was not clean and the maid staff was rude and cleaned as little as possible.

Well, the hotel was clean and friendly, especially for the staff in charge of the morning breakfast. The complimentary breakfast was fairly nice for a cafeteria style meal; with menu changes to break the monatony. My only complaint was that the bathroom exhaust fan did not work, although opening the window vented the room quite nicely.
Overall, the stay was enjoyable.
