Perfect base for Newcastle

  • gregacus
  • Sep 3, 2011
I arrived at the hotel at 8:30am and was told I wouldn't be able to get to my room until 2pm as there had been someone in the room the night before. That was no problem, I was able to leave my bag in the storage room & then use the wash-room facilities in the gym to freshen up. When I finally got to the room it did seem to be the furtherest from the entrance but sure a little exercise does us good ;). I found the room to an excellent standard, no problems with the cleanliness or the amenities. The only downside to my room was that it was to the front of the hotel which is quite active at night time and can be quite noisy. I had woke up during the night and found it hard to get back to sleep but thankfully I was equipped with ear buds which done the trick. I think ear buds would be a handy solution for the hotel to leave in the room for any light sleepers. That evening I spent a while in the gym & pool area which was more than I was expecting. A wonderful extra to the hotel. For breakfast in the morning I took the lazy option and just paid for it at the hotel which I thought was quite expensive. I did try to make it value for money though :) The hotel is a great starting point for exploring the city, whether it's to the shops or St James Park. As I was only staying for one night I didn't get to see much else of the city. On the Sunday I was also able to leave my bag in the hotel after I checked out and headed to a NUFC match (a must for any visitor) which was perfect as my flight was not until later that evening. I found the staff really friendly & helpful the entire time I was there. Any little queries I had they were more than able to help.

It was a brilliant and very pleasant hotel in a perfect location to to the city centre and railway. It was well presented and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Our room was fine and clean..the only thing that was a negative about the room was the heat!thank goodness there was a fan in the wardrobe!the radiator wasnt on but there were very warm pipes running through the room causing it to be unabearably warm!Other than that, a fantastic stay.

  • Jul 15, 2011
the room was small but clean, the staff was efficient and cleaning people friendly, and the price was good for the area. It was a little warm in June, and with the window open, we could hear drunk people yelling throughout the night, a problem when one sleeps near bars and train stations.

Pluses outweight minuses

  • Miss PS
  • Mar 15, 2012
The hotel (which does need to be updated - as they are planning to do) is located right on the River Tyne. It is just a short walk (uphill) to the center of town but far better to watch the tide roll in and out on the river then be located elsewhere. There is a outdoor market on Sunday, two minutes walk, along the Quay. I was shocked that the hotel (that size) did not have a single converter from American plug to British. After purchasing one at the train station, I realized my computer's plug would not fit into the converter's "mouth". Colin, who I spoke to at the front desk, went way out of his way to fix the converter and help look for a telephone charger (which I had also forgotten). This made up for the fact that no one was able (or interested) in helping earlier in the day. I dined at the restaurant and, with low expectations, was pleasantly surprised (except for the pungent smelling smoker who served my dessert). Too bad they charge for internet access.

Comfortable Room and Great Location

  • EBDAtlanta
  • Mar 13, 2012
I recently spent four nights at this hotel. My room, which had a nice view of the River Tyne and Quayside, was a bit small by American standards but perfectly adequate. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was large with a tub/shower combo, and the shower was powerful, not always the case in the UK. I was pleased that the hotel was quiet, too. I enjoyed the location on the Quayside, and the train station is only a 10 minute walk. I opted not to dine at the hotel, as the prices were a bit steep for me and there are several options within walking distance. Overall, I was pleased with this hotel and would certainly stay there again.

The hotel staff were very friendly and polite,it was very very clean but the rooms were very warm at night. The room was not ready when we arrived and we had to take a walk around the city centre for a while till they were done we were not happy with this as we had been travelling and just needed to get freshened up .The hotel is situated very very close to a railway line so i didnt get much sleep at nite. The lift was very old and very rearly worked so we had to walk up 3 flights of stairs and my partner has a bad back which wasnt very good for us. Hotel was very close to city centre aminities.

For a weekend away this hotel

  • Colin
  • Sep 29, 2010
For a weekend away this hotel was average. The reception could do with a facelift as looking tired and tatty. The rooms we had were clean but the door was a bit rattly and I think with a good push the door would have opened very easily, not very inspiring for safety. The continental breakfast was average but we noticed tet the plates and cutlery were not the cleanest and could have done with a better wash and dry.

I was over for a Newcastle United game and decided to give Jury's a go. Having been to Newcastle several times in the last 6 months, I found this to be the best hotel I've had the pleasure of staying at. Friendly and helpful staff really welcomed me. Room was immaculate and the bed was very comfortable. The only problem I had was trying to locate the hotel. A few signposts around the town would have made findingthe hotel a bit easier but I got there in the end. Highly recommended.

Hate to give it a perfect review

  • Diane
  • Feb 27, 2011
Hate to give it a perfect review but could not fault the location or the unit, just hope that now that I have discovered a gem in Newcastle I can get a booking next time I come from Australia. A short walk takes you to the City and you do not have to put up with the hen's nights I have experienced at other hotels in Newcastle. Highly recommended from a hard to please traveller!

Once the Hotel is finished it

  • Gordon
  • Aug 24, 2010
Once the Hotel is finished it will be brilliant. The boarding outside as you arrive is a bit off putting. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Drinking water in the rooms or an ice machine in the corridor would be good. If the air conditioning was working that would also have helped as the room was very hot. It was very comfortable and we enjoyed our stay.

Very good very friendly staff nice rooms a bit away from places though Newcastle is about 6 miles away but that didn't bother us as we were mostly interested in going 25 miles up the road to Alnwick. We'd stay here again.

What one would expect from a Holiday

  • Philip
  • Nov 11, 2009
What one would expect from a Holiday Inn. Reception staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. Rowdy guests at 2am and 4am on Saturday night. Clean, well appointed rooms. The pillow scheme is a nice touch. Threadbare towels (standard room). I probably won't stay there again simply because it is too far outside of Newcastle (7 miles from city centre) but the deal meant attractive pricing.

We stayed at this hotel one night before returning to the US. Two weddings were being celebrated at the hotel that evening. Lots of fun to sit in the lobby with dinner and a glass of wine and people watch! The room was very nice and very comfortable. No complaints at all.

When I arrived at the hotel I

  • John
  • Sep 1, 2009
When I arrived at the hotel I asked to be booked on a 6.30 transfer to the airport. I double checked with reception to see if the transfer booking had been made. When we arrived at the reception at 6.20 we were told that we were not booked on the bus. Reception then told us they would book us a taxi but this did nit arrive either. we had to wait until the bus returned and take that to the airport we did not get to the airport until after 7.00am and almost missed the check-in time for our flight. A complete fiasco.

Loved that you offered 20 minutes free internet; both my husband and I had been out of country for over two weeks and we hads tons of email and it was so helpful. Like that the toilet is separate from rest of bath. Like that you have glass shower curtain instead of fabric, which is often "soured" in many hotels. Appreciated courier service to airport. LOVELY breakfast with lots of choices. Will definitely stay at NOVOTEL hotels in future. Regards

Chose this hotel for a family get together in Newcastle. Good quiet location. Our room had a fantastic view over Tyne to Newcastle. Room was clean but basic. We chose the continental breakfast option which was adequate. You had to pay in cash for this at the time of eating

Perfect location 5 mins walk from main station:very quiet unless you are facing courtyard when they are emptying bins early(5.30am approx) or on roadside if you want your window open as it faces main road. Buffet breakfast adequate choice but needs more fresh fruit, real juice rather than juice drink and there is small cooked choice.Bonus is availability of a free broadsheet newspaper.
