The Britannia is a fine place to stay in Manchester. It's right in the heart of the city and a five to 10 minute walk from the main rail station, Picadilly. We stayed on the fifth floor in a room not facing the street.(We asked for a quiet room). The minor note I'd make is that the evening was warm and with no ceiling fan and only a small window opening, it got quite warm, thought certainly not unbearable. Also I thought the price included brakfast but that was not the case. The ensuite facilties (shower and bath)were great, the vast window offered a view over the city and hotel staff were very friendly and stored our bags for some hours after check-out thus saving us from lugging them around until our late afternoon train. The central staircase in this heritage building is a sight to behold. I have no qualms recommending the Britannia in Manchester.

I was here overnighting as my flight to Chicago required early check in. Everything was fine with the hotel BUT there was no wireless service at all. Having stayed the previous two nights in a room above a pub in West Yorkshire WITH wireless, I can only assume larger hotels not offering it are just gouging. Otherwise fine though, staff are polite, location cannot be beaten. Decent food and beer.

I loved the look of this hotel, because of the old world architecture. I thought it was even more lovely than the pictures that I saw. I loved the dining room with its beautiful chandeliers. The room was cozy and clean. I enjoyed the style and luxury of it all. Slept well and relaxed. Not enough towels provided and when requested more, did not get them. I overlooked this because I loved the place so much. We only stayed one night, but I enjoyed it. I thought the breakfast buffet of the full english style breakfast was heavenly and the staff was very kind and helpful. Very close to the Manchester Airport, made it quickly to rental return. I would stay there again!

My husband and I really enjoyed this hotel. We didn't have a converter when we got there and they let us borrow two, one for his computer and another for my hair dryer. Unfortunately, my hair dryer blew up (i guess we had it on the wrong voltage) and the hotel staff brought us a hair dryer to the room. We didn't know anything about the town or where anything was. The staff was very helpful. They called cabs for us and ordered us pizza to be delivered to the hotel. Their breakfast was fabulous! They have a nice bar/restaurant area. We ate lunch and breakfast here. The standard bedroom was clean and roomy. The bathroom had a towel warmer, a bath/shower, and was very clean as well. The atmosphere was lovely and quaint. It's a very old hotel, but it didn't have the strange smell and super creaky floors like some older hotels do. the shuttle is convenient. The man brought by husband to the airport which was about 5 minutes away and then promptly picked us back up when he called. I would stay here again.

This was our second stay here, the first was great. this time we found the carpet stained, the dvd not working and worst of all the black out blind had come unfastened at the top (high up approx 12 feet) so at 4.30 am sunlight flooded the room , so we were unable to sleep, my husband went to inform the 24hour night staff but there was no one at reception. so all in all not a five star visit . when we mentioned our complaints to reception they were not really intrested, but said mention it next time and we would be looked after , i carnt see there being a next time. all we got was the offer of free car parking and as we were not in the car park hardley any compensation for not sleeping in a bed room that costs over £ 200.00. bad show from manchesters premier hotel.

  • Dec 7, 2011
1st of all I would reccommend Sunday Lunch in the Restaurant. I thought it was £30 for 3 courses and was pleasantly surprised when it was actually £20 per person. Even the wine which was a NZ Pinot Noir to go with the food was only £22 and a quick google showed it to be £11 to buy so not the usual 3 times (or more)cost here. We were running late due to motorway accident and staff were all very helpful and nice. In fact staff were pleasant throughout our stay. It was our wedding anniversary and I chose the Lowry for location as it is near the shops and MEN where we were seeing Coldplay on Sunday night. I asked for an ice bucket for our champagne but as this was £5 I just emptied the mini bar and cooled it in there. Staying the Sunday was a good rate at just over £120 for a riverside room. It was nearer £400 if on a Saturday or Monday so we only stayed one night. Room was large, comfortable and modern. Just not worth the full rate IMHO. If you are tall like me you have to bend down in the shower which is situated above the bath. Tea and Coffee making facilities have to be asked for. I would have preferred a boutique hotel with smaller room and nicer furnishings but this did the job.

Good location & price. Apartment clean & well furnished. No microwave oven which would have been more useful for a short stay than a full sized oven & dishwasher. Recycling area dirty & inadequate. TV picture quality poor on several channels & unable to tune in mainstream channels like BBC1 & 2. The reception staff that I encountered were helpful & friendly bar one. Subjected to very late night noise from canal area below apartment & adjacent bar despite double glazing. Would stay there again, if on a short visit, on basis of location & price.

We were very thankful the concierge sold stamps: both postcards and international so that we could send things back home. We enjoyed our stay in Manchester. We did lots of shopping & the hotel was ideal as it was so close that we were able to pop back to drop bags off & have a cuppa before heading back out! We were disappointed to find no restaurant or bar. Luckily it wasn't far to find restaurants etc. Tesco Express is next door, handy for self catering. Amazing view of the city from the apartment, looked out at it for ages.

This was a great place to stay in Manchester City Centre, couldn't be more convenient for shopping, bars and nightlife! We were upgraded to one of the penthouses on the 19th floor- the view was amazing and it also meant that city centre noise wasn't a problem. There were 3 double bedrooms, one with a fantastic en-suite, and the apartment had balconies outside all the rooms- these weren't big enough to sit on, but great for just standing out and looking at the view. Highly recommended!

I stayed in room 460 I booked a family room. The room inside was not big enough. Jacuzzi does not works. The most annoying thing was this horrible stair ramp inside the room which cuts the room into half and is so low that me and my partner got hit by it several times when trying to go near the table for dinning. Room is dull left side lamp was not working. The bed mattress is inclined downward on the right hand side my partner kept on slipping off it and where do I plug in my phone charger and laptop for work. NOT good experience.

Trip to Manchester

we were in town one night. Staff was friendly. Room was a generous size and was very clean. The location of the hotel was great for our plans and easy to get to the train station. However, no Internet included which was a major turn off!!! That is the only reason I would tell a friend to consider another hotel.

Great father, son vacation

My 18 year old son and I had our first beer together. We saw Manchester City beat Reading, and two days later we saw Manchester United beat Marseille. Other than meeting for dinner and football we each did our own thing; shopping for me, riding the train listening to accents for him. Street names are poorly marked, and seem to change for no reason. If you're in a hurry take a cab...7 pounds to Man. City stadium, 9 pounds to Old Trafford. Ticket agent for train seemed to take advantage of us; he sent us to a station that was closed on Sunday, wasting an hour of our time getting to our hotel. Good trip, my son is ready to return. The old addage holds true: take half the clothes and twice the money

Had a great weekend playing golf at the Worsley park Nice golf course, everything was so clean and tidy. Even though it had just rained before we arrived. Had a great time at the Chimney bar but too noisy at the Sports and Spikes. The food and wine was quite good at the Restaurant Very good value so close to Manchester

I stayed a week at The Place in Manchester. My trip was a blend of business and pleasure and the hotel just added to it. The location is ideal...just off the main shopping strip and a short walk around the corner to the train station. The apartments are spacious and well appointed. I was so happy to find a washer/dryer combo as well as everything a good kitchen should provide. I used the health club and a few occasions and it had good updated equiptment and was never crowded..yea! Would I come back...you bet!

Hotel old and different, would

Hotel old and different, would have been nice if breakfust was included instead of having to pay another £15 also some of the breakfast staff very slow, had to ask for tea and coffee, then the toast, then a fork, then spoons my breakfust was at this point cold!, no one appeared very interested. I would however go back again even though it is a little expensive, the location is resonable.

One word, FABULOUS!

  • Jun 22, 2010
I really enjoyed this hotel. It was right in the middle of the City Center, and close walking distance to everything. The train station is literally across the street, arriving from the Manchester Airport was super easy! The hotel was spotless, the service was superb and I have nothing but good things to say about this establishment. While checking in, the clerk asked if I wanted to leave a credit card on file in case I wanted to charge things to the room. Initially I said, no. She agreed and started writing a room number down. Then I changed my mind and said, yes. She looked up, smiled and then scribbled out the room number and wrote another room number (on a higher floor).I don't know if you get special service for leaving a card on file, but either way my room was excellent. The bathroom had a heated towel rack (fabulous!) and each day the room service keepers would deliver a bag of fresh towels and soaps to my doorstep (because I always leave the "Do Not Disturb" sign posted). I needed to print out boarding passes for my next flight and the clerk at the front desk let me use her computer to print out my passes. Too kind. There is no ice machine, but every time I needed ice I just asked the bartender at the restaurant/bar downstairs and he gladly provided ice.Truly a gem, and after talking to my UK friends, I got a better deal on the room than they could.
