It was OK!

  • Eurohoppa
  • Nov 2, 2012
Family-owned business; house is old but still beautiful; room was small - hardly any space to put our luggage; has no AC or lifts. The hotel's main advantage is its proximity to the coach and train stations. There are also several restaurants and shops nearby. The neighborhood is quiet and private. Breakfast buffet had good selections, but turned out to be not included in our vacation package so we had to shell out 25GBP for eating breakfast there for 2 mornings. We were told when we checked in that it was included but that was neither here nor there. We only stayed in the hotel for 3 nights; our stay there was just OK.

Delightful hotel

  • BHWMC
  • Oct 19, 2012
The Grange Rochester was nicely decorated, in excellent condition, conveniently located, with a very friendly and helpful staff. Although our room was not large, by London standards it was quite adequate. A bus line ran in front of the hotel, but it was also very easy to walk to many areas, including Buckingham Palace. The hotel is on the historic register, so they are not able to air condition, so I'm not sure what a summer visit would be like. We were there in October so there was no problem. Our only complaint was the price of breakfast in the hotel, if it's not included in your room rate, but there were many cafes nearby. I also was disappointed at the fee for wifi. All in all, I would highly recommend this hotel.

Exceeded Our Expectations

  • NoPatience
  • Dec 26, 2012
I had little hope that the hotel would be as nice as the pictures (are they ever?) but St. Ermin's was indeed as nice as the pictures. Because I purchased the room as a package, I expected a small room, inconveniently located. Our room was tucked in a little alcove, away from elevators and foot traffic. As a result, we were over a back street, where the building behind us unloaded heavy loud things several mornings, but that was the only negative of our stay. The room was large and comfortable, especially for a city hotel. Staff could not have been more helpful. Wi-fi was free and quite decent (the hotel was not full, either, which may have helped). Location was perfect for weekdays, with many breakfast and lunch options. Holidays, not so much, as everything closed for Christmas. The Tube station was right around the corner, which could not have been more convenient. (Again holidays made that slightly less than perfect - for some inexplicable reason the Tube closes completely on Christmas, forcing us to get car service to the airport.) I recommend St. Ermin's wholeheartedly.

Very disappointing first time in London Hotel experience!

  • Stephan444
  • Nov 8, 2012
Went on line to book a two night stay in around central London.Came upon this Hotel which was rated about a 3 star in a great location and the best price I could find on line.Booked the hotel room which included FREE WiFi.When arriving to the hotel you have to check in down the block at the Tophams Hotel which wasn't a problem for me.After getting my room key I proceeded to my hotel room. Here's where to my amazement find the door handle ready to come off the door, phone not working, stained carpet and could not get any WiFi signal. After several attempts I could not stand by without bringing these issues to the attention of management. The manager was very professional and friendly and offered an upgraded room immediately without any hesitation at the same price in the Tophams Hotel which is much cleaner and has better quality rooms.I thanked him and accepted the room.I would have rated this hotel a one star but due to the way management handled the situation I rate it a two star.

Fantastic Location in London

  • DeeCee20
  • Sep 25, 2012
Second stay at this hotel. Location is phenomenal for visiting major London sites. Unfortunately, everything in London is expensive these days and this hotel is no exception. The room rate was not unreasonably expensive for a major metropolitan city, but breakfast, etc. were all quite costly (especially when you consider the British Pound to US Dollar values). Room was roomy and very clean located overlooking the lovely courtyard. Despite the expense of London, I would absolutely stay there again as many major London attractions are within walking distance.

Convenient location, excellent staff, very small standard room wit full size bed

  • ParadiseLoverNY
  • Oct 1, 2012
The hotel's location is right next to the Buckingham Palace and about five minutes walk from the Victoria underground and train station. Hotel's staff is excellent . There is a complimentary internet but it does not always work well in a room. The standard room with a double bed was very small without a dresser. So we had to live out of a suitcase for a week. There is a place to hang cloth up on hangers only. The breakfast was good but pricey, we got a special package that included our breakfast. The hotel has an old charm with a military motif and nice restaurants. There a couple of nice restaurants right across the street towards the underground . We really enjoyed Noodle-Noodle and an Buckingham Indian Bakti. It is also close to St. James and Green park, about 15 min walk to The Westminster Abby . The bus stop is near hotel for sightseeing or take it to see Harrods, Royal Albert Hall or Trafalgar square which is less expensive than train and takes about 15-20 min to get there. There are two bottles of water and a tea pot with a selection of flavors in a room also.

Great Romantic Getaway

Great top hotel. If you are looking for a romantic place, boutique size, intimate, private with excellent accommodating staff look no further. My boyfriend and I really loved the room, clean and decorated beautifully, great upkeep of the room throughout the day, complimentary snacks and cold breakfast. Truly special and romantic. If your goal is to be in a trendy, party atmosphere with a busy bar, this is not the place for you. All depends on what kind of trip you plan to take. Or you can jump in a cab and do both, as we did.

My daughter and I traveled to London to celebrate her 21st birthday. 41 Hotel is the perfect place to celebrate any occasion! The staff goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome and to insure that your stay is everything you want it to be! Even before we arrived, the concierge arranged dinner reservations and upon arrival, it was obvious that she had done her homework. The restaurants she recommended were in the perfect location and were superb. The hotel itself is intimate with beautiful black and white decor. Rooms are plush. They offer 11 different kinds of pillows! One of the best things about 41 Hotel is the executive lounge. It is a place to relax, read and enjoy breakfast as well as what the staff calls "plundering the pantry". Almost around the clock, there are delicious snacks available. We took advantage after we returned from the theatre in the evening! Our visit to London was during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. 41 Hotel is directly behind Buckingham Palace. It was at the center of all activities. Accessibility was a bit of an issue, but normally this wouldn't be a problem at all! Overall, 41 Hotel was excellent. We will stay there next time we are in London!

Outstanding

My wife and I have been regular travellers to London for over 25 years and we've finally found the nearest thing to an ideal hotel. The family-owned Windermere is in a pleasant residential district a brief stroll from Victoria rail and tube station (make sure you use the shortcut which the staff will explain) and an even shorter walk from Victoria coach station. The hotel has been refurbished to a very high standard but still manages to be intimate, homely and as far removed from the corporate blandness of the big chains as it's possible to imagine. We stayed in a "classic double" room which was more than adequate for two of us. The bed was so comfortable that on two mornings we slept far longer than we'd meant to! The food is excellent and breakfast is included in the room price. The staff were delightful - the warm welcome from owner Nick when we arrived really set the tone for the rest of our stay. Highly recommended - we'll certainly be back.

Lovely location

  • I'm a travel bug
  • Jul 9, 2012
The private park in the middle of the square makes the location. Our room overlooked the park and all of it's loveliness. We could smell the trees and shrubs and flowers whenever we walked by. The hotel is a couple of short blocks to Victoria Station -a major transportation hub. The close proximity was great. The staff was nice when we spoke briefly. The room was very clean which we appreciated. The mini nespresso machine made noise like a jackhammer but it only took 5 seconds or so for the cup to fill up. A woman that I believe was the housekeeping supervisor came into our room twice while we were in it to ? check on the housekeepers work? She was pleasant so we weren't terribly bothered by it however she was a couple of seconds away from meeting up with my spouse who had just finished showering. As described, the room is very small, no surprise there but somebody really goofed up on the design. There were 3 shower heads but we could only use one, the furthest from the shower opening, or we would have flooded the floor with water. The towel rack held 1 bath towel and 1 hand towel. The square bathroom sink drained very, very, slowly. The window didn't open at all and the room was extremely stuffy even with a/c on ; I recommend doing what we did - buy a fan. The room has 1 luggage rack and the only closet wasn't big enough to hold a suitcase; I put mine on a small ottoman that was in the room. Aside from the 1 towel rack, there isn't a hook or anything else to hang a wet towel on. The one garbage in the room was tiny. The bed was extremely comfortable. We tucked the 2 hotel robes between the headboard and the mattress to fill up the gap. The room's decor is pleasing to the eye. The hotel is big into perfume spray and thankfully the scent is very nice. We enjoyed the bottle of pillow spray in the room. The hotel dining area is very small. We could have asked the bar for ice but a machine would have been handy. We didn't find a hotel gym that we could go in and use but there was mention of hiring a trainer for one-on-one. We were out of the room most of the time but the little things mentioned made an impact because we spent more than a week at the hotel. Overall, the hotel is very nice but we both agreed that we would stay somewhere else if there's a next time; the lack of fresh air was the biggest drawback. I would recommend the hotel to a friend but I'd be sure to mention the con's.

When we checked in we brought 1 additional guest more than originally booked. Checked in at 10PM and they were going to bring up a rollaway bed. By 11PM no bed had arrived. I called and they said they were going to send one up. By 11:20 still no bed and called again. By 11:30 I called and cancelled the bed as my daughter and her husband were going to try to sleep on the twin bed. He ended sleeping part of the night on the floor. We did have a extra bed for the second night.

Don`t book a room in the mews part of the Hotel you are nearly under ground. Very hot and no air at all. Table lamp bulb not working Linen on bed not good didn`t smell very fresh to me and only one thin foam pillow each not even more in the cupboard to use. Shower door came off the runners, due to the wheels bent. shower plug blocked so all the water went over the floor. Breakfast was ok nothing more. nice big chip in the milk jug. toaster just burn bread. I would not class this Hotel as a 4 star by a long shot. The staff were nice and the location was great for viewing London.

Great weekend in London

  • Coldspringer
  • Sep 11, 2012
Super location, extra friendly staff, and a nicely updated room. It was perfect for the two of us for this 3 day getaway in London. Very short stroll to Westminster Abbey, 10 minute or so walk to Buckingham, Palace, 1 block to the St. James Park tube station and another block to the park. We planned to visit Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, and had scheduled a tour of Buckingham Palace. Also we had booked a hop on hop off bus tour and Thames cruise, and were pleased to find that we could easily walk to a pickup point. The location, staff, and amenities exceeded our expectations, and we look forward to a return visit to London, and would stay nowhere else! Food in the pub was also very good and so convenient.

Our stay at Sanctuary House proved to be one of the most comfortable, convenient and satisfying stays of our travels. Located about 100 metres from Westminster Abbey and Parliament House and 50 metres from St James's Park Tube Station, Sanctuary House is the perfect location for any visitors to London. The bedroom was more than adequate for our stay and the beds very comfortable, whilst all of the amenities were first-class. We found all of the staff to be courteous and willing to, promptly and efficiently, attend to any query that we had.

London is expensive. This hotel is pretty good value for the price. You are about a 4 minute walk to the subway station. It is located on a road that has multiple hotels such as holiday inn express. Just make sure you don't get a room on the basement floor. Comes with free breakfast but NO FREE WIFI. You have to pay for the wifi.
