Some surprises, but overall is good

  • DRAFTER12

I paid for one bed in a 4-bed room on internet. But when I checked in, the front girl gave me a bed in a TEN-bed room!!! Regardless I told her this is NOT what I paid for, she insisted that she cannot do anything about it. At last, I had to pay extra £20 to switch to a 4-bed room. The hall-way was shabby while the shower room was really clean. The bed sheet was wrinkled, like someone has used it already. Do watch your head if you are given a bottom bed.

at first disappointed, your email to me to confirm my booking said "Room description: Dormitories room. Contains one single bed. Suitable for one person." which made me believe I would get as I asked - a single room to myself - email was misleading. However, breakfast was good and staff were helpful. Hostel conveniently situated for tube and chipshop.

Excellent stop-over before flying from Heathrow.

  • Mar 13, 2012
The hotel was perfect for my needs. I had business near King's Cross before returning to the US. My one complaint was that I could not get into my room until 1:30 pm. The receptionist insisted that there was not a single room available at that time. This was a problem since I had arrived from Cambridge at 10 am. The breakfast was plentiful but not especially memorable.

Great location. A problem that you have to pay for wifi access - in comparable hotels in Sweden it is free. Also an issue that in the middle of summer having only quilts as bedcovering can make it rather hot at night.

MIC Hotel is located in Euston Street, just 3 minutes walk from Euston Station which has mainline train, London underground and local bus connections. The hotel bedrooms are located on the private, quiet, 3rd floor (with lift) of the Methodist International Centre. The centre offers a wide range of meeting facilities as well as bedrooms and accommodation for adult students of many different cultures and beliefs from around the world. The hotel bedrooms far surpass many of the so called four star hotels in the area with air conditioning and LCD televisions as standard. MIC does not have any parking facilities. There is metered parking on Euston Street and NCP car parks are located at Euston Station and North Gower Street. MIC is located outside Londons Congestion Charging Zone.Even though the bedrooms have won awards and the meeting rooms are spacious and adaptable, the Atrium must be regarded as the best space in the building. It is a large open area designed to relax in. It is furnished with colourful and comfortable chairs and sofas with ample space to stretch your legs. The café is situated at the far end which also serves as fully licensed bar. The Atrium is used by all guests throughout the day yet still retains an air of calm. It is the ideal place to get away from the noise of the city or to meet fellow guests for a drink and a bite to eat.

I had booked through [...], the hotel staff couldn't find my reservation. But they were nice enough to give me the last room available for the night. The room is tiny, the bathroom is tiny. The window can not be opened, it's kind of stuffy in the room. There is a lift but I still needed to lug the luggages up and down some steep stairs to get to my room. The location is awesome, right outside of Euston station, but the room is quiet.

One fantastic week in London

  • Amira
  • Jan 3, 2012
This hotel is in an AMAZING location. You are literally a walking distance from almost everywhere. Smack centre of London. About 2 minutes walk to Oxford Circus and about 5 minutes to Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Soho, Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square. It is also conveniently located right beside the Warren St Tube Station so that you can get anywhere if you don't feel like walking or if you feel like seeing some areas that are a bit farther out. The only thing is that the hotel is situated near a hospital, so you can expect to hear ambulances and sirens throughout the night, but we thought it was worth staying in such a great spot! The lobby of the hotel is fantastic, the rooms are nice and clean but very small to North American Standards, but for Europe I think they were great. The only issue we found with this hotel was that the concierge was not helpful at all. They had no idea about anything in town and could not direct us/give us advice to get anywhere. Typically, you would expect more from a 4 star hotel. Over all we had a WONDERFUL experience and would definitely recommend staying at the Radisson Grafton on Tottenham Court Rd. for a lovely London experience!

A small room, but very clean and has ammenities like wireless and cable. It took a little time to find the electrical outlets and ethernet port, but eventually I found them (above the coffee maker!). The bathroom is small and I'd imagine the shower would be difficult for large people, but average folk will find the phonebooth like experience OK.

Good Location, Close to Russel Park Metro Station

  • Oct 10, 2011
The hotel is very pretty from the outside and has a very pretty, small courtyard in the back. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The bathroom is EXTREMELY small (think Airline Bathroom) and the shower is the smallest shower I have ever seen. I was traveling with one of my daughter's. It's a good thing my husband wasn't with us, as he wouldn't have fit in the shower. The location was good and was a 5 minute walk to the Russell Park metro station. The Room was clean.

Location across from train stations was the best part of this stay.

  • British Travelers
  • Sep 18, 2011
We stayed one night at the Megaro close to the end of a 2-week vacation; so we had several comparisons to other British hotels, including another 4-star hotel just two blocks from the Megaro. It just didn't stack up! Ironically, it was our most expensive but least liked. Room was clean, but extra small with minimal amenities. Shower looks futuristic but is not easy to use. Proximity to the train stations was great for convenience. However, the noise levels of motor traffic, sirens, and people yelling in the streets prevented a good night's sleep. Staff were courteous and professional. The restaurant "cooked breakfast " was so-so. We don't understand the 4-star rating and suggest they review their pricing and rating policies.

Good value for the price

  • Chris
  • Oct 24, 2010
My daughters, ages 28 and 25, and I went to visit London to learn about British history, visit the tourist spots, etc. We chose the Holiday Inn since it was the only hotel that pictured two double beds. When my [...] travel information was emailed to me, it appeared that there would only be one double bed and a sofa bed for the third person. When we arrived at the hotel I explained that I saw pictures of two double beds when booking and hotel girl was very nice to accomodate us right away. Overall the hotel was very clean and service was fine. Our only complaint was that it was too far from "the tube". I knew when I booked the hotel that it was four or five blocks away, but after a day of touring/walking, the four or five blocks to get back to the hotel was a bit far. Also, we weren't sure about how safe the area was in the evening, though nothing ever happened to us. Next time, I would book a hotel closer to "the tube".

Description
The Alhambra Hotel built in the early 1840's for lodging purposes, represents one of the last landmarks of the Pre-Victorian Period Set in Kings Cross, an area which was once a village called Battle Bridge. It is surrounded with historical landmarks, such as the famous Kings Cross Train Station built in 1851 which at the time was the largest Railway Station in England. Over the last 50 years The Alhambra Hotel in King's Cross London, has established itself as the premier budget Bed and Breakfast (B&B) within the King's Cross / St. Pancras area. The Alhambra Hotel offers comfortable refurbished rooms, with a complimentary tea and coffee making facilities in every room, a full English or Continental Breakfast and WiFi for a very affordable / cheap price. The Alhambra Hotel has been run by the Valoti family for over half a century, originally by Francesco and Martine and now also aided by their daughter and son-in-law Sonia and Bruno. During this period the hotel has hosted guests who wanted to see local sites such as the British Museum and British Library or take advantage of the fantastic public transport links. This has been added to with the opening of the new St. Pancras Eurostar Station which is very near and easily within walking distance. When seen as an overall package the combination of affordable and comfortable rooms, with a now world famous breakfast cooked (by the Owner himself!), free WiFi and amazing location, makes the Alhambra Hotel the obvious choice of accommodation within the Kings Cross / St Pancras area.

This was a great hotel. The check-in was very efficient and friendly. The room was good, if a lttle small. However, that is what one expects in London unless you are prepared to pay over 150. The English Breakfast (included in the price) was excellent; and efficiently and freshly prepared. There was a small problem with the Shower, but judging by the positive reaction to my feedback I guess this will will be resolved quickly. I will certainly be staying there again.

Everything that you would expect

Everything that you would expect from a 5* hotel. Just one unfortunate aspect, for my wife and me personally: we were looking forward to the re-opening of the (original) building as a hotel after so many years - BUT our accommodation was in a new building adjacent to the original - but as a 5* hotel we found no faults.

Very good

Great location--very close to Russell Square tube stop and handy little mall with grocery store, popular coffee shop and several restaurants. Hotel is modern, clean, and generally consistent. Room was small but not tiny with electric kettle, tea and instant coffee. Refrigerator had been removed from room. Only minor negatives were inconsistent housekeeping--did not remove used coffee cups every day and took wash clothes with leaving new ones. Our bill had a bar charge that was not ours, which was removed without any problem.

I felt that my room was overpriced. It was small, very basic, and cost $800+ for three nights.

Great Location and So-So Price

  • Brian
  • Sep 16, 2008
The hotel is just off of both Russell Square and Tavistock Square (where one of the bus bombings took place; take time to note the memorial plate outside the British Medical Association). The Bloomsbury area is great. The hotel is one block (as the crow flies) from Russell Square Tube stop and just two blocks from the British Museum. If you're young and healthy you can EASILY walk from the hotel to Leicester Square and also to Trafalgar Square. The hotel was extremely clean and odor free. I had a street view and if you lean your head out you can see Russell Square. This was my second one-night visit in the same week (I was in Manchester for most of the trip). On my first arrival at about 11:00 am no room was available, so I had to leave my bags. They have a GREAT sort of machine-like method of leaving bags so you can go out and do stuff right away. On my second stay, I arrived at about 10:30 am and my room was ready, so I was able to pop up and leave both my bags and some breakables from Manchester. When you arrive, there will ALWAYS be tons of buses in the courtyard, and lots of people meandering in the lobby. Don't let it frighten you; they are in large tour groups, so just politiely make your way to the check-in desk. Check-in both times was quick, efficient and easy (despite the crowds of bus-tour folks). My only real complaint is breakfast. The included breakfast is toast, rolls, butter, jam, various cereals/canned fruits/yoghurt. The full English was, as I recall 4.99 pounds (so about $10). That is fine, but the table set-up is like a large U.S. public high school. That is to say, 6 people to a rectangular table. The tables are very close together, so basically, you're tense and crowded. Get there as soon as it opens (check the time for the given week day or weekend day). I don't like people on top of me while I'm eating, so I had my toast, jam and coffee and left. Again, the hotel can't be beat for location. It lacks any ambiance; there's a nice bar there if you need a beer afer hours, but otherwise no real common space. However, one is only sleeping and showereing there after all. The station is within walking distance, so the hotel's location was doubly convenient. It is also within walking distance of St. Pancras and King's Cross (unless you're lugging a LOT of heavy or breakable things). If looking again for a Bloomsbury Hotel, I would consider it. London single-room hotel rooms simply don't get much cheaper than $150 US anymore (not without facing grime or geographical inconvenience). So, bottom line: if you stay here, you'll probbly have no real complaints, AND you'll be able to walk to quite a few must-see things without putting out the significant cash for a cab or tube fare.

The Royal National Hotel is extremely close to the British Museum, a must see for mummy fans. Although somewhat confusing as to which side of the hotel to check into (the south side) and lacking internet in the rooms, the hotel was adequate, if a bit pricey. The free breakfast is a little meagre, but you can upgrade for 4.50 pounds. Internet in the lobby tended to be slow during peak hours, but easy to access (Many Univ. of London students were availing themselves of the service).

Hotel staff not aware of our reservation thru Orbitz. We were told room was not available for all four nights but they fixed it. I suppose you get what you pay for. Peace of mind, mostly. Could've probably done as well (location or price) if we'd flown in without reservations & looked on our own because there are plenty of small hotels like this.

Location excellent as we arrived at Euston station and left on Eurostar the next morning. Also not far to walk to interesting places. Receptionist friendly. Service at breakfast friendly and good choice of breakfast considering price. We had a ground floor room but it felt safe. The room and en-suite were quite small but comfortable enough for 1 night. Kettle and hair dryer provided. We will probably try somewhere cheaper next time as it may not be much different.
