At first we were frustrated. We had two rooms and one was to have two twin beds. This was not the case. When we asked for the twins the first person said there were none. We then asked for a cot and she said there were none. We asked for a different room and that was not available either. At that point we decided our daughter would have to sleep on the floor! As we went out for the evening we ask to have extra linen. They asked if we were cold. I said, " no but someone was gonna sleep on the floor." Lady looked upset. When we returned there was a lovely, comfortable extra bed. Thank you to the young lady (wish I knew her name) you made our weekend!

We were extremely pleased with the suites. Great kitchen with all the amenities. The work-out facility was great. The location was perfect--near to everything. The only issue was the housekeeping. The bathroom was not cleaned properly for two days running. However, all the other amenities made up for this. I think it is important to make sure that the suite is cleaned properly and report it to the front desk if it is not.

Very nice stay

  • Nov 7, 2012
The Apex Waterloo Place was an excellent find. They graciously allowed us to check in early (our flight arrived 6:35 am), and upgraded us to a 2-bedded room, at no extra cost -- very nice indeed! We were able to walk to all the major sights, and the staff were very helpful with directions and good suggestions about where to dine. The room was a bit chilly, despite our attempts to raise the temperature on the thermostat, but then that is what I have come to expect from UK hotels in cold weather, so we came prepared. All in all a very nice stay, I would certainly return to this hotel.

Great base to explore the city

  • DomB
  • Oct 16, 2012
My girlfriend an I booked this hotel rather quickly and did not spend much time researching before. It turned out to be a great pick. Located at Charlotte Square, one of the more beautiful squares in the city, several bus stops (including the AirLink to the airport) stop within minutes of the hotel. Rose and George street are two main streets in the new part of town. While not the most central location for the Castle or Royal Mile, many things are in walking distance and buses seem to run every few minutes. Hotel staff was very knowledgeable and friendly and provided us with good information about the city and several day-tours. One minor point of criticism is that there was some confusion about whether or not breakfast was included in the rate, although the hotel did resolve the issue swiftly and in our interest. Breakfast was good, although several nearby restaurants offer better value. We did not use the restaurant/bar for other meals. While the hallways seem a bit dated, the room was actually very spacious, clean, and nice. While we didn't have much of a view, there was never any reason to expect one based on location anyway. We did not use the spa/gym facilities. Lastly, it would be nice to have free WiFi also in rooms and not just the lobby area, but again, not a major inconvenience. Overall, this is a great place to stay based on location and service. While I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for families (at least I did not see much along the lines of child entertainment) , it should be fine for most couples and business travelers.

This is the second Fountain Court apartment/hotel in Edinburgh I have stayed in (the other being Harris), and just like their other properties it is new, clean and of generally high quality. The location is great - just far enough from Princes Street so as to not be bothered by the crowds / tram works (still going...), but close enough to places like Lothian Road and Haymarket to have your pick of bars and resturants. Highly recommended for short or long term stays, group or single travel.

Lovely small hotel in a Georgian building in the New Town. Decor appropriate for the era. Very comfortable. Location within easy walking distance of Princes St and the Royal Mile (though walking uphill is required).. Level of service was exceptional. It was like a small Downton Abbey with the butler arriving with drinks on a tray!

Wonderful Find!!

  • Aug 3, 2010
We stayed at The Howard for personal travel and we were NOT disappointed. It was a beautiful "old style" hotel made of connecting town houses located in new town. We had wonderful service and a gorgeous room. The view wasn't anything to write home about, but we didn't stay there for the view. It was away from the hustle and bustle of old town, yet close enough to still walk everywhere. The hotel provided a restaurant guide that they had put together and we ate a wonderful local pub. The atmosphere was inviting and restful and the included breakfast the next morning was great!! We are already planning our return back to the hotel and think that the hotel is absolutely worth the five stars!

Great Get-away Apartment

  • May 25, 2010
Great Location! Close to the Royal Mile and Arthur's Seat. Easy to get to entertainment, the castle, the palace, dinning, etc. Hotel room was fully stocked with dishes, towels, extra blankets. The only thing that was missing was an Air Conditioner, but I think that is because it normally doesn't get as hot as it did when I was there. The only other problem I had was that there was no cable, so there were only 4 stations that came in all fuzzy... Other than that, this has to be one of the best hotels I've stayed in while visiting Edinburgh.

We rented a one-bedroom apartment which was small but well laid-out. It had all the amenities that we needed- well equipped kitchen, a washer dryer, televisions in the master bedroom and the living room, nice bathroom with robes provided., dining table and chairs, good location to tourists sites and wonderful concierge staff.

We were greeted by the friendly staff and given a tour of our apartment. Their was nothing they had not thought of. The apartment was comfortable and inviting. The staff had even gone grocery shopping and had stocked our refrigerator with milk, juice, butter. And provided a basket filled with cereals and a loaf of bread as well as coffee, tea and sugar. Kevin and Christopher are fabulous, they are their to help in any way they can. Whether you need a cab or advice on what to see or do during your stay in Edinburgh they are their to help. The Apartment is immaculent and modern. The beds comfy. Our stay here was perfect!

Good 3 star for minibreak

  • Sheila B
  • Sep 27, 2012
I was in Edinburgh for a minibreak (shopping and sightseeing). I was a little underwhelmed by the lobby on arrival and, on the way to the room, felt the corridors were a little shabby (scuffy wallpaper, chipped skirting boards, grubby carpets). However, the room itself was clean and well presented with the standard tea/coffee, tv, trouser press. The room was decorated in tones of brown and beige with a small table and chairs by the window. The bed was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was clean but the shower a little tricky to get right. There was a swimming pool, sauna & steam room with gym facilities as part of the fitness centre which was very good - well maintained with good changing facilities. The restaurant was fine - decent prices, ok food. There is free wifi but I thought it was a bit slow. The staff were all very pleasant, helpful and professional. All in all a good 3 star with a few minor points that could be improved. One major downside was a lot of noise late Monday night to early Tuesday - queried it with the staff next day but no idea what it could have been. I travelled to Edinburgh by plane & got a taxi from the airport. There is an airlink bus from the city centre directly to the airport, £3.50 & about 20 mins. It would have fairly simple to get to the hotel by bus but would have involved at least one change. For the rest of my stay, I travelled by bus as there is a stop just around the corner & a daysaver cost £3.50 for unlimited travel - took about 15-20 mins to get to city centre. I visited Edinburgh Castle, the National Museum, the Art Gallery, took a bus tour, etc. A very picturesque city with many beautiful buildings. There is some disruption at the moment as they are putting a tram system in and also some building work in the very outer areas of the castle. The hotel itself is on Corstophine Hill which has plenty of scope for walks & good views, if your room is to the rear. It is very near to Edinburgh Zoo. The trip compares well with other visits to cities in the UK.

  • Kaylo
  • Nov 14, 2012
The hotel is lovely. The pool is small but all you need, with jacuzzi and sauna. The restaurant/bar is expensive but has some tastey treats on the menu that are worth the price tag. The rooms are comfortable. I feel the best thing about this hotel though is the location. From the windows of the rooms you can see the mountains and fields - stunning to wake up to. The transport links are fabulous. We didn't wait more than 5 mintues at any time of the day or night for a bus including a bus right outside to the airport. We couldn't have chose anywhere better.

Nice stay to prepare me for freshers week at university

  • Sep 11, 2011
After catching a plane 4pm local time, an 13 hour flight, 15 min express train, 2 undergounds, 5 hour train ride, and a 10 minute taxi I was ready to sleep. The Holiday Inn was very welcoming and helpful. I was able to get room service after 9pm and was aided in getting a taxi and with four enormous bags of luggage in the morning. They made a long trip easier so the next day I was refreshed for university. **one negative: Thin walls, but I have found this true of most European hotels I have stayed at.

Not the best location for a March (2008) visit to Edinburgh - it was snowing! It's almost a 2 mile walk to the city center and with teenagers and cold weather, that's too far to walk....so hire a small car! Staff could be friendlier but the hotel was just fine for a one week trip to the old country.

Good place to stay - just know all charges prior.

  • Scotzman
  • Aug 18, 2012
The place felt like home; it was comfortable, fairly quiet and not far from City Center. Having keys for the front door as welll as your apartment felt much more welcoming than using a keycard. Everything worked well and most every ammentity was avaiilable; the only item missing was a hair dryer. Now, you should be aware that you receive your own telephone number, but do not have any method in receiving messages. If you have visitors, the admission phone light should be off to allow it ring. The only real gripes comes from the £10 a gay parking fee and 3% credit card fee (and if using a debit card - any fees your bank may charge).

What a great place to stay. Clean, modern apartment. Really cosy and warm, and only just outside the city centre. Staff were very helpful. The advice about bus routes to and from the hotel proved invaluable. I will be coming to stay again and have already recommended the apartments to family and friends.

Good location close to the city centre and accessible by public transport. Main criticism was the lack of customer service after check-in. Check in good and useful information about shops / eateries and how to get into Edinburgh. Washing machine / dryer in apartment a bonus especially after 2 weeks of travelling. Overall I would recommend it as reasonably priced accommodate that allows you to self cater

Easy living in Edinburgh

  • WhiskyAdmirer
  • Jul 21, 2012
We arrived from an overnight flight, tired, sore, and dragging bags. The Radisson is an easy walk from the Airlink terminal, if a bit uphill. We were able to check in early, shower, nap, and still walk to Edinburgh Castle well before closing time. This hotel is very centrally located, has a beautiful exterior, spacious rooms, and nice amenities (coffee/tea service with a surprise or two, nice tub/shower combination, lovely shampoo, etc). We could open the window in our room, to see Arthur's Seat and hear the gulls cry. The staff are very attentive, and willing to explain almost anything. I think the hotel is a very lovely place to stay. Regrettably, I can't afford to stay here more often.

The Rocco Forte Collection's Balmoral is a luxury hotel in the true sense of the word. With its majestic clock tower, the hotel is a unique and contemporary luxury five-star property in the very heart of Edinburgh. While many Edinburgh hotels claim to have Edinburgh's landmarks on their doorstep, few can say their doorstep is a landmark. The Balmoral offers 188 opulent suites and stylish rooms, many with views towards Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town. The Balmorals ten conference and banqueting suites, including the signature Sir Walter Scott Suite all enjoy natural daylight and can accommodate a wide range of events including: business conferences, intimate dinner parties, large receptions and weddings. The hotel and city also make for an ideal incentive destination with an abundance of history and culture readily available. When it comes to fine-dining, the choice of restaurants at The Balmoral matches the mood of the moment. With attentive but non-intrusive service, guests can choose from the hotel's Michelin-starred number one fine dining restaurant with outstanding cuisine provided by Chef Jeff Bland; Hadrian's for chic and informal dining; Palm Court for traditional afternoon tea or its very own Bollinger Bar. The newly refurbished and stylish Balm-oral Bar is perfect for a relaxing cocktail or traditional whiskey. For the ultimate in relaxation, the Balmoral Spa is an exclusive retreat in the heart of the city. Probably one of the best hotels we have stayed at. Fabulous location, and staff (especially the concierge - David Musk, Steven). They are all locals, are super helpful, and all their tips for things to do and places to see were right on the money. Can't recommend it enough.
