What travelers to Durham are saying

I came to Durham for the cathedral. It's the only fully Romanesque cathedral in the UK -- and it was absolutely magnificent.

Durham hotels

The cathedral city of Durham is one of the most beautiful historic sites in the United Kingdom, having a wealth of historically significant sites to explore, as well as a thriving student population which gives a boost to the town's nightlife and activities. Hotels in Durham range from bed and breakfast affairs in the outskirts of the city to comfortable 4 star accommodations in the city center. In the summer months, rooms can be booked in the university's student housing, particularly for business trips and events.

Durham quick picks and tips

Special Events

For large events, Durham's Gala Theater is the place to go, with live theater performances, stand-up comedy and cinema available.

Durham offers the typical selection of restaurants you'd expect in the UK, with chains such as Pizza Express, Cafe Rouge, and Bella Italia making up affordable staples for a good night out, and many up-market options available. "La Spaghettata" is a family-owned Italian restaurant, which comes highly recommended, with low prices and large portions of honest and tasty fare.

Major Point of Interest

Durham Cathedral and Castle are must-see locations in the city, though the Castle can be viewed only on selected tours as it houses one of the university's 13 colleges during term time. Durham also has a beautiful botanical garden, which acts as a research facility for anthropology and biology as well as being a great location for a picnic.

The Gates and Prince Bishops shopping centers contain the bulk of the shopping locations in the city, with British Home Stores, JB Sports and other clothing stores as well as Granger games and other specialty shops available.

Durham's sports offerings are mainly university teams, with active rowing and rugby teams among its offerings.
