They upgraded us to the Continental Club level and it was truly spectacular! A private waiter in the lounge , all day complimentary snacks and then a happy hour with muse bouche , finger foods and beer/wine. Truly a delightful treat. People at the staff couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating.

We loved it!

From beginning to end, it was a great trip. . The only on site experience that was not great was the spa. I had an "ok" massage and there was no hot water in the shower. It was pretty pricey but I figured there was value in being able to shower after the service, but that didn't happen. The manager was not there and I was checking out the next day. The clerk at the hotel desk assured me that if I email the spa manager, it will be made right. But yes, I would not hesitate to go back or recommend it to anyone! One more thing, traveling during Christmas week meant that we were not able to find tours because they sold out in advance, way in advance. I wish I had known that and I wish the tour desk could offer more assistance or options.

Pros: Very good hotel, Pool was very good, the Hot Pool was fantastic. Its in a good area. Close to a lot of restaurants & in one block walkable to the beach, staff were very helpful. Cons: Room is small, a bit pricier for the size, I suppose its for the area, room needs a bit improvements. no complimentary Breakfast. always short of Pool towels.

Great for a budget getaway to Isla Verde. The Hotel is recently renovated but still you can see the old hotel in the building details, specially in the rooms. The Managers Cocktail was a very nice touch with complementary drinks and food. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Nothing to luxurious or nothing stunning about it, but for the money is a great place to stay, just a block from the beach and the other expensive hotels.

The perfect location

  • Chris Travlin Man
  • Nov 16, 2012
This is a very nice hotel. The security is excellent, from the pass key operation of the elevators to the safes in the rooms. The size of my room was also exceptional. Unfortunately there was no view as I was on the lowest floor and the hotel is shaped like a horseshoe and all I got was a view of the roof. There were some ginger plants scattered about but this could be vastly improved with the addition of several more potted plants if the roof could support them. The rooms do not come with microwaves or refrigerators but you could get a small refrigerator for an addional $10 per day. There are plenty of restaurants about for any budget so this is not really an issue. There are also convenience stores and a grocery nearby so you can stock up on anything you might need. They had cable with several channels in english although there was a problem with the remote channel selector but you could work around it. There were a few tours I could not go on because their seaon doesn't start until afer Christmas. So that's sometihng you may want to consider when planning your vacation. But insofar as Old San Juan is concerned, there's a huge police presence so I felt very safe wandering about. All in all, I really enjoyed myself.

Good Hotel, Bad location

  • abbaby
  • Dec 29, 2012
The hotel itself was good. The casino is disappointing if that is something you take seriously. And accessibility to places of interest (old San Juan, Condado, Isla Verde etc) is non existent. Need to take cabs (15-20$ worth one way) for each of these destinations. So need to budget that into trip cost before deciding that the savings in booking this hotel are worth it.

  • Dec 22, 2012
When we booked this hotel we knew it was a little out of the way, what we didn't realize was that it is REALLY out of the way. I have read reviews that also say other hotels are out of the way but we soon realized this is way worse. At least the other hotels have a beach. We got nothing, except an infinity pool. Also we almost got robbed walking back to the hotel because the Taxi driver said he can't take us any closer to the hotel because of the concert at the convention center. Moreover, the restaurants at the hotel are all rated pretty bad, so you are kind of forced to go out to eat. The hotel is really new since it was built in 2009, so that's a huge plus for us and the main reason why we stayed there. However, new doesn't mean clean. The first day my bed had dog hair/feces on it and I wrote a note for the cleaning lady to change the sheets. She changed that sheets and we thought it's all good. The problem was that 3 days later we found blood on my wife's bed sheets. Nothing huge but looked like someone had a small cut and let it drip onto the bed.

We arrived at the hotel at 10am after our cruise and check-in wasn't until 3pm, but they had our room ready by 11, which is great. In the meantime, they told us we could put our stuff in lockers and start enjoying the pool and grounds. I'm giving them a 4 star because everything was soo over-priced that I was pretty disgusted. The cost of the room was fine but I went to purchase sunscreen at the shop and a 6oz bottle was $21.00. A plate of simple nachos was over $15, the cheapest beer was $6. We ended up ordering a pizza from pizza hut down the street and had it delivered to our hotel. We had spent a few days in Puerto Rico at another hotel and stuff was nowhere near this. I know prices at resorts tend to be inflated but we travel a lot and this was just completely absurd. Otherwise the hotel was quite nice, spacious and clean room, friendly staff, etc. I would recommend this hotel if you don't need to eat, drink, or purchase any simple items while on your trip.

San Juan Ritz Carlton; Isla Verde

  • Grateful
  • Dec 18, 2012
It's the Ritz, so, expect that it will be nice. It's clean and the staff are exceptionally friendly and cordial beyond any hotel I've ever stayed. However, I felt like I always needed cash to tip and keep tipping, notwithstanding the daily resort fee you pay. I know that's how many employees make money but it gets old. The pool area is nice if moderate in size -- there's only one pool, so, that means kids/families, which if you go on vacation for peace and quiet, might be challenging. The beach is okay too, but, like other destinations, it has its share of debris on and in the sand; cigarette butts, used plastic straws/utensils, etc. The pool staff is accommodating and there's plenty of fresh water and oranges poolside. The lounge chairs seem a little dated -- when it rains in the morning, the foam retains so much water and doesn't dry well, we took the foam pads off the loungers and just used the slingback virtually every day. The lobby also has "free" cold bottled water and apples during the day. With the exception of the poolside cafe/restaurant [very dated and extraordinarily expensive for what you get -- $19 for 2 fish tacos?, $14 for a pina colada in a plastic cup], the hotel restaurants are nice. The Italian restaurant we ate at was 2 entrees + 3 glasses of wine = $140+, without appetizers, salads, dessert, coffee or tip. And, the bill will come with space for the waiter and captain's tip, respectively. Yes, the service and food were good but not sure $140+ and + 2 tips good. For breakfast, take a 3 minute walk outside the hotel and try Piu Bello or Las Carnarias, if you want something light and more reasonably priced than the full menu restaurant. There is a coffee bar with muffins etc. inside the hotel as well. The real issue for me at the Ritz was the taxi fares -- standard rates apply; $21 one way [w/out tip] to Old Town San Juan which is less than 15 minutes away. So, for dinner in Old San Juan, add an addtl $40+ to your bill just for transportation. There is a regional bus transport that runs between 30 - 45 minutes for $.75 that some guests used and said it was fine. That notwithstanding, the surrounding area of the R/C is very dingy, and, but for the noticeable police presence, probably not the best place to hang out. There's a "couple" restaurants on that street if you don't feel like eating at the Ritz or hiking it to Old San Juan. But, again, the area is not the best. There's also a hotel zone in an area of Condado [$17 one way taxi fare], which was more upbeat and very marginally reminded me of the south beach strip. Restaurants of note: Casa Lola (Condado area). Cafe Puerto Rico (Old Town San Juan). Don't miss: Old San Juan, forts, cemetery, churches, charm of residential streets and neighborhood restaurants. We did this all on our own -- took a cab into town and did all the sites ourselves. Very easy to do, you are on your schedule and Old Town San Juan is very navigable on foot.

Beautiful hotel but it was our honeymoon and they refused to upgrade our room. We had a view of the pool and city and it was super cramped in there. The pool is great and the beach water was warm (nothing compares though to the Pacific Ocean:) Great restaurant (Il Mulino was aMazing ;) Very family friendly Park across the street for much less!!!

Good enough

At $154 per night for a couple of nights, it' was OK. No frills, but spacious, clean and comfortable. Customer service was impeccable. Furniture and decor outdated, but it didn't bother me since I just needed a place to shower, sleep and keep my stuff for two days. It has a kitchenette that I didn't use, but it would be convenient for those who use it. I'd stay there again for another quick trip. If I'm staying longer and want a little more luxury, then I'd expect to pay more somewhere else.

The hotel was very nice and clean. I liked that a continental breakfast was included. The staff was very nice and helpful. My only complaints were that there wasn't a pool and because our room was on the side of the street we could hear all of the traffic noise. Overall, we enjoyed our stay there.

We had a great time at La Concha. Good food great property and amazing staff. La Perla restaurant is a must see spot inside a giant sea shell. Prices for food and drinks were fair for such a nice hotel. If I could make one improvement to the property is the lobby bar sound system. They bring in Dj's on most nights but it was ruined by a terrible musak style sound. No base at all... Other than that everything was quite nice....

The hotel was average...the location good, the service great. There was a night without running water b/c they had to clear the water lines. We didn't have water to flush the toilet, wash or brush teeth for 12 hours. It was a little inconvenient to say the least. Also, the rooms did not have coffee makers nor was there coffee available in the lobby. NO breakfast either.

Quiet, romantic hotel on beautiful beach

  • Dec 20, 2012
We had a great vacation at the San Juan Water and Beach Club. A cute, boutique hotel, well located on Carolina Beach. The hotel is clean, has a staff that is eager to please you and an excellent restaurant. The food combinations were innovative and delicious! This smaller hotel has few options on site, but has a quiet part of the beach with food and bar service beach-side ! Go for the snorkeling trip and try out some local restaurants on the island. We felt safe and well tended the whole time here! We will be back!

The staff is great. They work diligently to please their guests. The rooftop pool and bar area is amazing. The beach is right outside the front door. They have waitresses that deliver drinks and food on the beach. However, I purchased a cooler at walgreens and bought my own beer everyday. It was a lot cheaper. Taxi's are always waiting at the front of the hotel to take you where you need to go. Old San Juan is a short 15 dollar cab ride. Ocean views fromt he room are splendid. Great hotel for grown ups. I didn't see a single kid at the hotel the entire trip. The value at this place is great. I would def. stay there again.

Fantastic Stay

The staff at this hotel was so nice, kind, and helpful. They went out of their way to take care of all our needs and went way beyond what most hotels would do. The gave us assistance on places to visit, eat, etc. The hotel is located close to the forts in San Juan and other tourist attractions. It is close to restaurants and the cruise terminal. Do not need to get a taxi to go the the cruise terminal if your large luggage has wheels. The breakfast was good. The hotel was very clean. We will defiantly stay there again. The only issue is some noise of garbage trucks and cars outside of the rooms. This is a old hotel and the windows and doors do not shield out all the outside noise. I could write a book on how great our stay at this hotel.

Wonderful Experience, Perfect Location

  • no frills traveler 33
  • Dec 23, 2012
I really felt lucky to be staying at Hotel El Convento. It is gorgeous, located in the heart of Old San Juan. The staff is top-notch. They speak both English and, of course, Spanish, fluently. They care very much about your experience as a guest. I was there just before Christmas time, and there were some parties happening in the center open area of the hotel. It was fun. There was some noise trying to go to sleep, but it didn't bother me. The rooms are relatively small, very clean, and lovely. (I stayed in a single, and am sure that the rooms are larger if you are staying with more people. Obviously.) I really liked it and would absolutely recommend it.

Imagine walking back to your room in the evening. lighted only by small lamps on tables for two along the courtyard balcony draped with philodendron and bougainvillea, music wafting up from the patio or second level tapas bar. You've just left the complimentary wine and cheese gathering and gazed over the city from a number of vantage points. This is a lovely, tranquil oasis with every staff member ready to assist with a smile.

Basic Accommodation but nice

  • Terri L.
  • Jul 22, 2012
The staff was friendly, the hotel is a block from the beach and walking distance to everywhere. It is a good hotel to venture out from. It is basic. It serves a continental breakfast, has internet access, and the rooms are clean. It is not fancy but it is economical and helps you to spend your money on more important things than a room. The area around iti s very expensive. Good choice for an active family that needs a good base to come back to at the end of a long day out.

Good location and value

The hotel is well located one block from the beach and close to the bus that goes to Old San Juan. The elevator is noisy and there is no carpeting in the hallways so sounds reverberate at night. The rooms are small but comfortable, however, there was little water pressure and the water was not very hot at times. Breakfast was convenient and the hotel very clean. If you are looking for a well located, low price hotel, this is a good deal.

Great location excellent value

  • Osobarboso

This place was perfect for what we needed. It was clean, the staff was friendly, and the hotel was in walking distance to anything we could need. I originally was kind of skeptical about the hotel. I had read some of the reviews and was unsure what to expect. We arrived in the evening and there was a sign on the door to check in at the sister hotel down the street. But after a few minutes of ringing the buzzer someone came to the front door and let us in. It took a while to check in, as the clerk was new, but we were pleasantly greeted and shown to our room. The clerk gave us some advice of local restaurants in the area. The area is safe and close to many amenities. There were shops and restaurants very close. Kasalta, Bebos, and many other restaurants and shops were within walking distance. The beach was a block away. They have a nice bar in the back of the hotel that was recently renovated. The only drawback was that I was literally eaten alive by the mosquitoes back there. It is a nice retreat and they have a huge wide screen TV to watch sports and relax. Ileana the bartender was helpful with local places to try and things to do while in San Juan. There is a pool that we used daily. It is small but clean and well serviced. I would stay here again and I would recommend it to friends and family.

Better than great for the price

I only booked hotel once I had landed SJU at 11am. I had a 2pm appointment in Carolina but once I picked up rented car I went directly to Hotel - only to be told that I could not check in until 2pm. When all I wanted to do is to do the paper work and leave my bag. I have stayed in many hotels so I knew that with a 2pm checkin the room may not be ready until then but I am accustomed to being able to check in and check my bag. I was also told that there was a pool, a hot tub, a restaurant and a bar. As I had several appointments I picked this hotel mainly for the hot tub because I knew that once finish with my running I would need it. Needless to say I arrived at 7:30pm and found no one on the desk and no way of getting into the hotel lobby. Another couple was there and they had already called a number posted on the door. We waited well they waited a total of 30 minutes before someone came from the "sister hotel" down the street. here incidentally The hot tub and restaurant is located. I must say that I was a little disappointed tired and hungry at this point and in desperate need of food and I surely could have used the hot tub. Please note that there was a pool, a very nice pool and a bar, a very nice bar. Well I changed clothes had a drink at the very nice bar and went out to Ashford St. to find food. I followed the recommendation of staff and had a nice meal. On the walk back I discovered The Radisson Casino at 10:30pm lost my money then at 12:45am I returned to the hotel to gather my things as I had a flight out at 3pm and I had to return the rented car. Had the hot tub and restaurant been there I would have really enjoyed the hotel ate and saved money. All in all The hotel is very nice and I would stay there again this time fully aware of their check in policy and that there is only a pool and a bar. Pool is open all night and the bar closes at 9 to 9:30.I should have known that it was too good to be true for the price - which was exceptional. Even without the hot tub and the restaurant I can't believe the price.

Our trip to Puerto Rico was as a whole fabulous. The hotel was not the best. I definitely felt like we were roughing it. The staff was awesome and super friendly. The location is gorgeous. Couldn't find a prettier beach front. However the rooms are very old, outdated, and barely functional. The water went off for 36 hours while we were there. We couldnt shower of use the toilet. Which was a major drag! The hotel has a nightclub an a bar which is fun for adults. If I take my kids again we would stay somewhere a little more kid friendly.

This hotel in the Isla Verde area is not easy to find. Look for the Burger King on the opposite side of the street in order to locate the small entrance/parking lot. The hotel is small, but the staff are helpful and the location on the beach is amazing. The rooms are small but they get the job done. The bathroom was nice and the full-size bed was comfortable.
