This property was in a great location and had a wonderful beach. There were plenty of lounge chairs and covered cabanas. The hotel staff could not have been any nicer and we felt safe and secure at all times. The food and drinks on the property were reasonable priced and very good. Because the beach was so enjoyable, we never used the pools, but they looked nice. One small complaint was that the beds were extremely hard due to the fact that the mattress sits directly on a cement slab. Regardless I am looking forward to returning again to Hotel Playa Mazatlan....but next time will bring a foam mattress pad! I certainly would recommend this property to anyone traveling to Mazatlan. Accommodations, location, staff and weather made this the perfect spring get away.

Great beach vacation for a great price

  • CKONE06
  • Jun 30, 2012
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to this resort, especially considering we paid less than $2000 with airfare for a 7-night trip. The property is fairly new and very well maintained. There are multiple pools, which is great as some are adult only and less busy. What was also nice is that the hotel had a private area on the beach. Those of you who have been to Mexico before know that this is key as it keeps the beach vendors at bay. We didn't have an issue getting a reservation for dinner, as long as we went down to the guest services desk before 10:00am. The food was average for an all inclusive, but the Mexican food was very good, as you would expect. I'm not implying that the food wasn't good, just that it isn't four or five star cuisine. The drinks were great. I was expecting very cheap liquor, but it was decent. For instance, their vodka was Absolut. Not the best, but it isn't Wolfschmidt either. The staff was great. Everyone was very attentive and polite. The one thing I will admit, however, is that previous posts were correct about the local customers. I read some posts about the locals being "bused in on the weekends," and assumed that these posts were being over-dramatic. But, the day before we left, I literally watched 13 buses full of locals drive up and unload what the security officer later told me was about 900 people. I had no problem sharing the property with the locals, but if that is something that will bother you, this isn't the resort for you in the summer months (I was told that the season for locals to stay at the resort is during the summer months and that in the fall, winter, and spring, the resort is mostly American and Canadian tourists). The one other downside, speaking as someone who has been to Mazatlan before, is that the economic downturn really appears to have hurt the Golden Zone area. A lot of shops and restaurants were closed. But, if you want a great place to eat, be sure to go to Pancho's, which overlooks the beach. It was great, and only about $9 for a platter of food. Awesome. One final thing--If the resort is fairly busy, the elevator system is non-functional. There are 6 of them for a 20+ story resort, and each only holds 10 people at a time. There also appears to be no rhyme or reason as to where and when they stop. You would be on the 10th floor and watch elevators go from floor 1 to 20 to 8 to 16 and never stop. I couldn't figure it out, but it made me absolutely crazy! Also, the locals didn't seem to understand the concept of a line when it came to the elevators. If you are used to riding the subway in NYC, you'll be just fine. If I did it again, I would get a room on one of the first five floors and just use the stairs. All in all, we enjoyed our stay and would return to this resort in the future, should we travel to Mazatlan again.

We really enjoyed our time here at El Cid Castilla in Mazatlan. The rooms were clean and the balcony had a wonderful view of the pool and the ocean. The restaurants had tasty food and a good variety each day. The waiter staff was eager to please. The nightly shows at La Pergola were entertaining. We played Bingo ( RIFAS) daily and enjoyed the live music Thursday and Friday in the Lobby bar. Overall this is a great place to stay.

this is a very nice place to stay for older people and families. the swimming pools are nice and the ocean beach is great. the staff is very helpful and friendly. the bar and cafe are better than average but there are a lot of nice eating places within walking distance. we tried a different place each evening and found most of them to be really good. it is very easy to get around in mazatlan at a reasonable price. this hotel is located in the middle of the gold zone so shopping is fun and easy. this was a very fun and enjoyable vacation.

The hotel is just okay. A/C at room is extremely noisy. Menu Room service is very limited. As an example they only have americano coffe, no other variety. Overall the food is not their best strength. Location is good. The staff is polite and kind but is lack of training in the system and stuff. As an example, I left open a 100 voucher at the check in and my room service as like 20. So when I made the check out instead of cancel the 100 and charge only 20 they did the other way around (charge 100, cancel 20, total charge 80). Now I have to call the hotel to fix this.

Excellent Resort

  • ZSam
  • Jan 16, 2012
But keep the following in mind: - The beach is pretty bad: It's rocky in many sections, and the waves are too high. Plus it's turbulent if you are trying to snorkel. It would be a good surfing beach if you are into surfing. - The resort is somewhat removed from Mazatlan. There is a free shuttle, but it does force you to be less spontaneous about your planning!

Nothing wrong really, just ok

  • Anonymous
  • Aug 6, 2011
The hotel is quiet, surprising for the location. The food was good. It is a bit older. The "new" renovation must have been around 7 or 8 yrs. ago. I reserved a "new" room and it showed wear and tear. I was angry that the hot tub cost an extra $30 or more. I searched for a hotel with hot tub in particular due to arthritis pain and didn't appreciate the trickery since I live on a fixed income. The pool is lovely and my son liked the slide once I talked him into using it.

Great Location on the beach

  • Anonymous
  • Nov 27, 2008
This hotel has a great location just across from the beach. At night I could leave the window open and hear the surf. In the daytime it was very nice to sit on the balcony and watch all the action on the Malecon. The breakfast was very good and reasonable too. I was very happy to have been assigned a room with a balcony facing the beach. I would have been VERY dissappointed if I were placed in a room on the other side of the hotel--no beach view, no balcony. The staff was very friendly and helpful in aiding me to sign on to the computers available to the guests.

What an experience

  • SD JCGs
  • Feb 21, 2012
My wife and I booked it for our first anniversary, not realizing it coincided with their Carnivale celebration. Olas Altas was abuzz with events and attractions and the main road along the beach was closed off with stages set up for live music. We were just outside of that so we escaped all the madness but were a few steps away when we wanted it. The hotel staff was great, especially the owners, who seem to take pride in making your stay a personal experience. Our room was huge, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom was enormous and the jacuzzi tub was very appreciated by my wife and I. They helped us set up a whale watching tour and a trip out to one of the islands. The crowning moment was the fireworks extravaganza over the bay. The owners set up a viewing party on the roof and our view had to be the best around. It was the best fireworks show we've ever seen. In the midst of the big crowd, the owner took the time to talk to us and get our opinions of the event. We'll definitely stay there again if we return to Mazatlan!

The Casa Lucila is a beautiful Botique Hotel! Conchita and the staff were gracious and loving!(something like being surrounded by angels). Everything about the hotel is elegant and magical!! We spent most of our time in historic old town! A wonderful place to visit for the warm people, taking in the beauty of the past, historic sights, beautiful stretch of beach and delicious food. The restaurant at the Hotel is a lovely retreat anytime during the day, as is the pool and sitting areas. The food is superb! The Ocean views are breathtaking. We cannot wait to return!

The best kept secret in Mazatlan.

This Hotel sits in the center of all activities. To the North you have the Golden zone to Playa Bruha. To the south old Mazatlan. The Staff is second to none. The swimming pool is arranged so that if you want the sun you have it, same goes for the shade.

Staff was nice and friendly. Room was clean, but shower was terrible. Ceiling fan blade broke off and maintance had to come and repair. Air conditioning was blowing hot air, but we opened the balcony door and the wind was blowing off the ocean very nicely. Overall a nice place to stay but I think there were better places to stay closer to Gold Zone. NativeSooner

This was our third stay at the Royal Villas. It just keeps getting better and better. The staff all recognize us now and were eager to greet us. We plan to return many, many times if the service continues to impress. One small criticism: There was a private wedding reception in the hotel grounds on the Saturday evening. This party interfered with the entertainment that the hotel had already provided for the "paying guests" in the bar area. They had to cancel the live music entertainment in the bar at 9.00pm in order to accomodate the wedding party and the hotel guests were NOT invited to the wedding. The wedding party went on until after 3.00am and the music could be heard all over the hotel! It didn't bother me, but it was the talk of the breakfast buffet on the Sunday morning after.

We stayed for our first time at Royal Villas Resort in Mazatlan. The location is really good. Near lots of restaurants & outdoor shops for shopping. The resort is not fancy, but clean. We enjoyed happy hour (4-5 pm & 8-9 pm) every day. We never ate at the resort, except for snacks, pizza, nachos, etc. by the pool area. The door guys out front are very helpful for information and very friendly. All the staff was very friendly!! We rented 2-Jr. Suites with our group of 7. Have grown children (20-30) with us. Worked out nicely. We checked out a 1 & 2 bdrm. VERY NICE!! Next time we will upgrade to at least a one bedroom. No activities, besides Bingo at the pool. No beach area set up for hotel. Kinda had to figure out your own. Did have plastic chairs & umbrellas you could set up if wanted. We stayed on the side of resort where Gus Gus Restaurant is located. NEVER had an issue with noise. It was cool while there, so always had patio door shut.

Great spot right on the beach

One could argue there are "nicer" hotels, but the location of this hotel is great on both the beach and the street. All the staff were really friendly, the room was awesome, and the restaurant downstairs has great chiliquiles (sp?) for breakfast, at outdoor tables sitting right next to the beach. What more could you want? If we go back to Mazatlan, we will stay here again.

At first we were impressed with the motel. Unfortunately that was short lived. We had a great view, but at night the lights from the next door room lit up our room as the curtains did not cover the whole window. The curtain were also just white curtains so it did not black out any light. We also had very thin walls, which was not a problem until night three when we had a party next door. They also were smoking and we had smoke in our room from the vents. We did complain and the front desk just wanted us to be moved. We declined as it was late and would have taken too long to move. We also had constant noise from the people on the beach, morning, noon, and all night. 6am we would still have people outside yelling and carrying on. We did not sleep well the whole time we were there. The motel did have a very good restaurant and a good happy hour. We will not stay there again, but may visit the restaurant.

Nice hotel, with a wonderful accommodating staff. I would recommend a small fridge in every room and more umbrellas by the pool. My only complaint, the beds are extremely hard. Once I mentioned to the front desk, they were very prompt in fixing the problem. This place is great for convenience of shops and dining. The food at the restaurant is very good. We would stay at Oceano palace again.

Great location

  • Bruja48
  • Apr 9, 2012
The beach location is wonderful, notwithstanding all the beach vendors who are there all day. I had heard about the noise from the adjoining bar, but when I turned the AC on low I couldn't hear the music any more. it did go on until the wee hours of the morning, however. That noise was nothing compared to my next-door neighbors who yelled, banged, sang, screamed, and partied most of the night. In spite of the noise, I would stay here again. It is a very good value.

The mattress in our room was the best we've ever had at a hotel. The pillows were uncomfortable. The coffee maker didn't work, but was replaced at our request. The maid was wonderful, and brought extra pillows and towels at our request. The staff was very friendly and eager to please. I would definately go back here.

Nice hotel

This is not a Mexican ocean front resort. No pool scene, swim up bar, or lounge chairs in the sand. It's instead a old school hotel that happens to be in the best part of town. First, the beach is just across the street. But it is located in what the locals call "Mexican Mazatlan". Quiet, clean, and without the rumbling traffic and pollution in the "Golden zone", what the locals call "California Mazatlan". Also, the hotel is on the edge of the historic part of town and a short walk to the Muchado Square. Nicest part of town.

A clean comfortable hotel, right on the beach (OK, across the street), with very helpful waitstaff. You will need a "pulmonaria" open taxi to get to the gold zone or the theater district, but they are reasonable. Critical for us, they accept pets.
