This was my sixth trip to this hotel. Overall I love this hotel, but this time I had some issues that they did not resolve. I booked a Junior Ocean View Suite with Terrace with a King Size bed. Upon my arrival they substituted an upgrade on the exclusive 6th floor. The only difference with this room and a regular room was that it was located on a secure floor and it had free internet service. It also had 2 double beds. The Junior Suites are on the 1st floor and have a sliding door out to a terrace that opens to the beach. They stated that my Junior Suite would be available the next day. I went back for 3 days in a row and no Jr Suite was available. I gave up after that and just enjoyed my vacation. I will stay at the Flamingo in the future but will make sure that I get what I pay for. They will be sent emails from me starting 2 weeks out from my vacation reminding them of my reservation. I will also not sign anything until I see the upgraded room from now on and will immediately get my trave agent involved if I am not getting what I paid for. The Junior Suites are the exclusive rooms in this hotel.

Great pools and kid friendly. Only two restaurants, seriously lacking and over priced. No late check out because it is a Owner property which they fail to point out, so being a Starwood member here, really has no advantages.

Club Med Cancun Thanksgiving

Our family of 4 (children ages 5 and 1) enjoyed an amazing Thanksgiving week at Club Med Cancun Yucatan. The resort is gorgeous and the staff is outstanding. Our 5-year old was a bit leary about the Mini Club -- for about 10 seconds -- then he was sucked into all of the fun, just like the rest of us. The kids programming was outstanding. The food is excellent and varied. The grown-ups were treated to outstanding seafood, fresh breads, perfectly prepared meats, and true service by the staff. Our son found something at every meal that was familiar (pasta, pizza, cheeseburgers, etc.), including ketchup (which he thinks makes everything taste better). We made him try other things, too, of course, but he was more comfortable knowing that the old reliables were there, and that he could earn an amazing dessert with a clean plate. Thanksgiving was traditional American, and we noticed lots of other larger family gatherings that evening. They also provided Gerber baby foods (fruits) and yogurts, as well as unseasoned vegetables at lunch and dinner, which could be blended in an available food processor. They provided real Graco highchairs at meals, and fullsized Graco strollers in each room with a baby reservation, as well as a baby tub, bottle warmer and portacrib. Call the resort to confirm these items in advance, and ask them to pick up/return you to the airport and provide age-appropriate car seats ($55 total for the four of us, roundtrip). One less hassle to worry about during the flight. A ground floor room in one of the quieter buildings is great with the younger children. Bottled water is included in the rooms, and replenished daily. Water coolers are located around the premises as well - no worries about the food/water safety. Nightly entertainment was a blast, but our favorite was the elaborate Mini Club Big Show - complete with costumes and dance numbers. The 2 bedroom club room was a great set-up for a family of 4. For Mini Club, be sure to bring a backpack for the child, with a hat, sunglasses, and his/her own bottle of sunscreen. The staff is great about making sure it is applied regularly. Ask about a babysitter for a special date night. And don't miss the day spa. That facility/staff is fantastic.

We spent 8 nights end of September at Club Med Cancun. Our son (4) loved the mini club, we snorkled, used the gym. The choice in the bars and restaurant is very good, especially a good selection of bread. Definitely would love to return.

We enjoyed our stay at the JW. It was a great choice for the holidays. The decor at the lobby was great with a huge Christmas tree and life size gingerbread house. It made the lobby smell great.
The restaurants at the JW were excellent. We particularly enjoyed the Italian for dinner and Sedona grill for breakfast.
The pool and beach area were very nice. Although we would like to see more amenities for children such as water slides or beach activities/events. Also, it would be great to upgrade the kids club as its dated and sub-par as compared to Hyatt kids and Ritz kids programs.

Staff was very friendly, entertainment was really good for being part of an all inclusive (except for Broadway night), buffet food was average - - but Marco Polo was excellent.

This is a good deal for the price. The food was very good and a real nice assortment. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location is good and safe. The only thing we didn't like was all the steps to get outside to the beach area but the excercise done us good!

too many children
did not seperate children from adults. Example:There are two pools, one with a bar the other wijthout. Keep children in the pool with no bar.
TV selection poor.
Beds too hard. Overall, I love the place. This was my second year in a row at the Riu Palace, but I don't think I will return.

The hotel has a beautiful lobby and they go out of their way to help you. It's in the main zone, so be sure to have dollars/pesos to use on the bus (they won't give you change) Great buffet selections Friday - Monday, but would recommend booking restaurants during the week. Also recommend taxi from airport - hotel & back, Our transportation was delayed - but prepaid, so we were stuck. Taxi ride to hotel zone in cancun should be 35-40. Do not let them overcharge. Get to know a taxi driver & he will help you travel cheaply.

We found the staff and the whole hotel complex stunning! Well laid out..right on the beach and very comfortable. Only complaint is that there is no coffee provided for the filter coffee machine-there was a shop where coffee was available, but only in large packets..we only needed for a few days. Other than that, a perfect family place with very friendly and helpful staff!

We arrived at the Royal Islander just before 1 pm as Cheap Tickets state that 1pm is check-in time. However, the Islander's actual check-in time is 4 pm. The receptionist clerk did his utmost to speed up the room preparation, and our room was ready by 1:15 pm. Top marks to the staff for their consideration. Our standard room was on the top floor, with spectacular views of white sandy beaches and turquoise seas, and the hotel's gardens and pools. There are lots of activities with lessons available at no extra cost. Food at the on-site restaurants was superlative. The room was large & comfortable.

The staff here is great, very friendly. The hotel is very clean, food is good, very good for relaxation. Overall it met our expectations, but there are a few areas that need improvement. The food at the breakfast buffet was cold, even when first brought out. The music at the pool area was awful. One of the reasons we did book this hotel was because it advertised premium liquor. Often, even when specified, we were not given what we asked for, and the good alcohol was kept hidden. It was nice that we could go to their sister hotel next door. The shows there at night were entertaining.

My husband and I spent our entire vacation relaxing. We spent our days by the pool or on the beach. The beachfront is beautiful at the resort. The staff is hospitable; not overly friendly or pushy. My husband does not get involved in the timeshare gimmicks so when the staff brought up our "free gift" he did not let him in the room. He took the free gift and told them he was on vacation, not here to buy a timeshare. The guy was friendly and never bothered us again. I have to say the food in their restaurants was not that great and very overpriced. One great thing about staying here is you can visit all of the Royal resorts, use the amenities there, or eat at any of their restaurants; the Mayan is next door and we ate their Mexican buffet and watched their show. It was interesting.

I thought this was the best hotel I've been to in Cancun so far (out of 4 previous hotels). It has an accesible beach as well as a great pool.
The on-site marketplace is well stocked with fruits, vegetables and all other foods, and allows you to put together a cheap breakfast or lunch or even dinner.
The rooms were spacious the balconies are huge (both rooms had exits onto the balcony). The staff is very friendly and pleasant.
Next time I will book here for sure.

We selected this resort based on the positive reports on the internet from other travelers and we are very happy with our stay. The location is good, with the Kukulcan Plaza, a classy shopping mall next door (five minutes walk to the north), and Katsu-Ya, an upscale Japanese Restaurant, just across the road from the mall.
We would have given a nine instead of 8.5 had it not been these two areas:
1) The beds are too soft and not up to international standards when most hotels are now offering harder beds especially for people who might have back problems
2) The two adults pools are a bit shallow, maximum 4 feet 8 inches; not deep enough for hydro therapy exercises (where you ride on a styrofoam noodle which keeps you afloat and walk in the water).

The main issue was with the staff; not real friendly. They could hardly understand English. Though the package I booked was an "All-Inclusive", I decided to tip anyone that helped me with 20 Pesos or more. The service never got better. The price I paid reflected the value...I guess. I will do more research the next time.

We went on a bike tour we also ate at the buffet and snack bar. Although we enjoyed the food they were lacking nightly entertainment. The front desk staff were very brief and not to friendly was not very informative. The staff at Sunset Lagoon did not speak much english which made communication ineffective. In other places that we stayed they were able to speak English fluently. If you stay at Sunset Lagoon it is good to know basic spanish. Be sure to take the boat or shuttle to the sister resort Sunset Royal to visit the beach .

The hotel was great, minus the small beach. This was the second time I have stayed there in one year so the food got a little old after the 5th day. But the Riu really caters to everyone. I would stay there again!

Beautiful hotel, good food. Wondful experience. Only thing wrong was thenpools were cold. Thet should hear at leas one pool. Rooms smelled smokey or musty. Poor Internet connection.

We just returned from a fabulous week at the Gran Melia in Cancun. The hotel is beyond beautiful. The lobby with its soaring ceilings and plants puts you right into a tropical paradise. The beach is clean and close. The pool was sparkling and the bar was close. The rooms were spacious and well maintained. Location is fabulous right across the street from Aqua World where you could board a boat to Isles Mujares or snorkling on the reef. Food was very good and plentiful. I would recommend to all my family and friends.

we just returned from our trip (4 adults and 2 children ages 3, 5). We've travelled many times to mexico and carribean so I have what to compare to. The hotel overall was very good, definitely not over 4 stars but definitely a solid 4 stars
Food:
Buffet had excellent tasting food. I must say the smallest buffet i've seen but every item was verrrry tasty! The desserts were amazing!!! I'm still dreaming about them. However, there were no items on the buffet that were of higher qaulity---- meaning---- no shrimps, lobsters, sea bass, steaks, assortment of seafood. The three restaurants italian, oriental , and ?seafood? were horrible. Presentation there was very nice but yuck. Service at the buffets were amazing. There was always someone there removing a plate or getting you a drink
Rooms: I had an ocean front room in the newer building? The two beds were tiny for two adults on each bed. The bed was very hard and the pillow felt like it had rocks. I tossed and turned a lot. The shower was amazing and the room was cleaned very well. Bring your own toilettries! This is not 5 stars! no slippers, no robes, no toilletires. A pathetic tiny tube of shower gel, lotion, and a bar of soap, come on really? I always bring my own stuff thank god. Nothing else is given in the bathroom.
Pool: pool was nice, with a bar, but cold water so didnt spend time there
Jacuzzi: DISGUSTING. it was more like a kids pool with kids in there splashing around constantly. Visibly floating dirt everyday! I wouldnt step foot in it
Beach: Amazing sand and warm water. BUT you have to walk down to the beach which is a pain, especially when you want to get a drink.
Entertainment: I did not participate in the daytime entertainment. BUT... we were unhappy that there were no shows for the night like most resorts do. There is nothing to do here after dinner. Its not like you can go to a club on the strip w/ small kids.
OVERALL, a solid 4 stars in terms of good service, cleanliness, and good tasting food. However, with so many resorts to visit I would not return here unless there was an amazing deal going on for this place.

The staff at this hotel are amazing. They were able to answer all of our questions truthfully, and guided us to some fantastic restaurants. They were also very helpful in acquiring a taxi for our return trip to the airport. The water from the tap is not safe to drink but they provide you with bottled water at no charge. They also have free internet available 24/7. It was an incredibly nice hotel that was definitely more affordable than an all-inclusive hotel!

this is a good hotel. the rooms are clean the staff are very friendly. the breakfast is basic, bread, jam, coffee and OJ. Not near the beach but very close to central bus terminal. from airport catch the ado bus to the central cancun terminal and this hotel is 50m from there. ideal place for a night before you fly in or out if just passing through cancun.

Côté positif : hotel les pieds ds l'eau ...mais , malheureusement , pas de clientèle française et personne ne parle français . Nourriture trés quelconque et répétitive .Tous les jours la même chose et pas de choix y compris le petit déj. qui est trés moyen .Sinon, , chambre trés propre et serviettes changées tous les jours , mais les chambres manquent de coquetterie ( pas un tableau au mur , rideau de douche rappiécé , tv ancienne et que des chaînes anglaises ou espagnoles , même pas TV 5 monde ..) par contre , superbe vue sur la mer du balcon .mais , rapport qualité prix , c'est un bon produit ( 1157€ par pers. en all inclusives vol compris pour 2 semaines, il ne fallait pas non plus s'attendre à un 5 étoiles ) le personnel est charmant et la plage superbe .

My Sister and I stayed in a double room and it was pure luxury. Loved the turn down service each night. Slippers at each bed with a little linen cloth where you step on or off the bed and bottled water on each night stand. It's those little things that mean a lot.
We stayed on the Club level and I highly recommend it. They have an amazing staff and the 5 food presentations are fantastic. We tried every dish and loved them all. It's a great break from the sun as well. We'd laid out all morning and headed to our room, clean up and have a long lunch in the lounge and just chill out. It's very hot during those midday 12-2. And you can just relax and have a cool and refreshing drink.
