Mexico Hotels

Mexico is best known for Spring Breaks and fun in the sun and at the beach, but visitors to Mexico hotels can also enjoy a rich historical and natural experience. Different parts of the country have different climates and things to see and do. Known for beaches, the western area has Acapulco luring college students to hotels in Mexico for Spring Break. It is easy to get across the northern border to Tijuana or Durango for a short vacation. Southern and Eastern Mexico are best known for their history, as Mexico City and its close by pyramids at Teotihuacán show.

Neighborhoods

Guests at western hotels in Mexico, in areas like Baja California, Acapulco and Guadalajara come for the beaches, the surfing, and the laid-back party atmosphere. While there are still major historic sites to see in these areas, such as the rock carvings in Acapulco, these are not as popular as water sports to be found at the large resort hotels such as the Fairmont Acapulco Princess. The central region, with its pyramids, museums, and Mexico City is the cultural heart of the country, and well worth a visit for the history alone. In Mexico City the reasonably priced Eurostars Zona Rosa Suites is just steps away from the museums and plazas of downtown city center and is one of the best accommodations for its price. Even though the southern state of Oaxaca is known for its fishing and its handcrafts, it is the most ruggedly indigenous state in Mexico, and for the visitor trying to escape the modern world, a room in this area is a great base of operations. Oaxaca allows visitors to go from an empty beach to hiking and climbing rugged mountains on an eco-tour within hours.

Mexico Quick Picks and Tips

Conventions

With the growing tourism industry, Mexico is hosting more international conventions than ever, most of which are held at hotels and resorts throughout the country.

Dining

While there are amazing fine restaurants all over Mexico, the country is known for its street food. Specialties include deep fried churros, fresh fruit, Tlayuda, and many regional specialties.

Major Point of Interest

The pyramids of Teotihuacán are a must-see for any visitor to Mexico City hotels. Not only are the pyramids climbable, but the immense site also includes large residential complexes, murals that still retain their color, and the Avenue of the Dead.

Shopping

Visit Oaxaca if you want traditional Mexican handicrafts; the artisans are out in their street markets and willing to talk about their work. For more standard tourist fare, there are malls in most major cities.

Sports

Bullfighting is perhaps the best-known Mexican sport, and often includes a display of the charreada (the national sport of Mexico) within the show. But the locals are also fond of their football games, with stadiums in almost every city, including the Estadio Azteca, the fifth largest stadium in the world, in Mexico City. Mexico has hosted two FIFA world cups.

Sinking in: Cenotes of the Riviera Maya

Running roughly 20 miles along the main road near Puerto Morales is the Riviera Maya's "cenote route," a vast collection of azure pools where you can snorkel, scuba, and get your Eden on.

4 beach resorts where you can swim with dolphins

In my house, dismissing the opportunity to go see "Dolphin Tale," the fuzzy movie about "Winter," the bottlenose dolphin whose real life home is the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Clearwater, Fla., would be the equivalent of canceling Christmas. To skip the movie, which opens Friday, would not be worth the heartbreak of a 7- and 5-year-old. I'm game, if only as research for what I really want to do with the family next spring break: Take a beach vacation that involves a dolphin experience. At these 5 resorts, suit up to swim with the most elegant creatures in the ocean.

Asia, meet Mexico: The Banyan Tree Mayakoba

What do you get when you cross a glamorous Asian resort with the Mayan Rivera? Only one of the most upscale and jaw-dropping Riviera Maya hotels you've ever seen. It's called the Banyan Tree Mayakoba Riviera Maya, and it single-handedly raises the bar on exotic luxury and style.
