Good & Safe

Hotel is very new and nice. To quell most concerns, I was in the hotel on a high floor during the 2011 Earthquake, and felt perfectly safe. Despite many aftershocks and even the initial huge quake, there was no damage at all the room. On more general points: -When entering the room, you must put a little rubber stick that's on the keychain into the wall to activate the electricity. When you leave, if you remove the key, the power goes out. This definitely affects anything you plugged in (laptop, camera, etc.), but worst of all, I *think* it turns of the minifridge. Not a massive inconvenience, but it's really not something I enjoyed. -Hotel staff is very accommodating. Even if you decline to have your room cleaned, they will still drop off towels, bathrobes, and toothbrushes every day. Staff speaks decent english, they will understand mostly anything you need. -Room is a decent size for a solo traveler, and even a close couple. Really not enough room for three. There's enough space to be comfortable, but I found myself stepping over my bag the entire trip. -There's a small laundry room, it'll cost you about 500 yen to do a load. There are vending machines on almost every floor, and tons on the street, as well as convenience stores in the area. The station: -No matter where you arrive, you should get onto the Yamanote line, and stop at Uguisudani Station. You can see the sign for Candeo from the platform. There are two exits, north and south. The south exit is noticeably closer to the hotel (go out, down the the bridge to the left, and turn left at the street), but not a lot places to go (a few restaurants and a convenience store, all next to the station). The north exit (go out, slight right onto the street, turn right at the intersection) is a bit further away, but leads you past a bakery, fast food, convenience store, etc. Whichever you prefer is up to you. -If you're using a foreign debit card, the only place nearby to get cash from an ATM is 7-11, and the closest one is on the street that leads into Uguisudani Station (perpendicular to the street that the hotel is on). If you take a walk down that way, you can't miss it. Since Uguisudani is so close and on the Yamanote, it is so easy to get to almost anywhere in Tokyo. Definitely of the best features of this hotel, as you can still have all the experience of Tokyo but not in a particularly busy location. Oh, and the area is very safe; I had no fear walking down all sorts of streets in this area long after dark.

not very far from the JR station but not all know where the hotel is really located. better offer more information or direction about that. the front staff seems not familiar with the website reservation procedure, which kept me waiting for almost one hour on check-in, not smooth either while check-out until i told them unable to wait any more, got to leave right away. the only laptop in the lobby unable to reboot without password, which was only in the manager's hand. so that while he's off work, other staff were unable to use it when i need to print the reservation for the next hotel stay. only one or two front staff can speak english, without whom hardly get enough information

My sister and I stayed here for

  • KENG
  • Apr 28, 2010
My sister and I stayed here for three days for the price of two so for that price I would say it is good value for money. The room is small, and one of us had to put the suitcase on the chair as there was no space on the floor. But it alright for us as we only used it for sleeping. Its proximity to the Asakusa subway makes travelling around very convenient and there was one day when we bought a one day Toei pass for 500 yen and saw most of the sights we wanted. Wish that there was at least one English language tv programme though for the nights we returned early.

Hotel nearby Ueno

  • May 16, 2012
About 8 minutes from the station. For people looking to beat the morning JR rush to Narita - it's a good spot since you can avoid all that and head for Skyliner. This is my second stay there. I noticed that 3 months later - the staff provides paper map for how to get to their hotel which is awesome. It is still a bit difficult to locate at night but with the hand map it's easier. Definitely an improvement. It would help if their maps featured locations of nearby stores and restaurants on streets for travellers with *open* hours marked for late comers. This would add big value to offset the slight disadvantage of the hotel's location. It would help repeat business if people could be sure that no matter what time they get there, they can always find a nearby place to eat, etc. All it takes is to map out the locations. I hope the staff can take these ideas into consideration as it can boost their business.

Overall - very good value!

About 10 minutes of walk from the UENO station once you know where to find the hotel. It's easier to find at night than during daylight - look up to see the lit up sign hovering over other buildings. Entry comes from a quiet side street - nice entrance with staircase but too little advertising to indicate there is even a hotel. Room size was typical for under 100 USD. Bathroom was clean. Could use digital safe but for the price - very good value. Given the price and station location (quick to airport or any part of Tokyo), I'll definitely consider staying there again in the future.

2 adults and 2 teen, on vacation, in two economy twin rooms. Rooms were small as expected but very comfortable (comfortable beds, good shower, quiet). Breakfast was fine - added value and convenience. Location - few minutes to subway. Many restaurants close by, but real central area (like around Ueno station) is further off.

It's an excellent little hotel near the Ueno train station. Not too many amenities, but the rooms are respectably sized for Tokyo. Access to the station- and from there, Narita- is easy. With a nice restaurant attached, this is just what you need for a business or personal trip.

Honeymoon in Japan

  • Oscar and Olivia
  • Mar 17, 2011
From the moment we arrived to our 'honeymoon suite' all the way through until we left, the Oak Hotel staff was 100% compliant with anything and everything we desired and more. Even with the earthquake, the loss of power and news updates (not in english) they kept us posted with the current events and made sure that we had a Black Electrical Torch aka flashlight working at all times. I can't tell you how much they have helped us out, made us feel comfortable and over all made our honeymoon in Japan as exquisite and as much fun as possible. The pre-printed English to Japanese flyer was a multiple life saver. As a veteran and engineer I would recommend my friends to to experience the Oak hotel, as a new husband married to a lovely lady, we will lodge there the next time we are in Japan. We've been back for 2 days and we miss the Oak Hotel already.
