This hotel was amazing. Less then a block away from a subway station and 10 minutes from the Kyoto Station via subway this hotel is situated perfectly if want to walk and visit shrines, temples, shops, or find a bite to eat. The room itself was very spacious, clean, and included everything we needed for our stay. I would return to the Hotel Monterey Kyoto in a heartbeat.

Excellent location directly opposite the Kyoto Station. Rooms are compact but well equipped (Main building Premium floor). Quick check-in. Did not eat in-house as there are so many other options nearby. Very quiet room despite being located in such a busy area. CNN in English free to room. Would stay here again.

very well located hotel, next to Kyoto train station. Makes life very easy for all sigthseeings. Many options for food and shopping just accross the road. Rooms are small as everywhere in Jp, but confortable enough with fridge, tea making and a small table with 2 chairs. Everything is good, apart from Internet access. They do not have wireless, although they have cable in the room. Not sure if it is free or not. They have only 2 computers in business center and costs Y100 per 10 min. I do recommend this hotel to anyone.

The only thing that would have made it perfect would have been a location with more restaurant options nearby although location within a block of the subway station made getting to the various sites in Kyoto easy.

Hotel was easy to get to near

  • Anonymous
  • Apr 16, 2011
Hotel was easy to get to near a subway stop. Also it's not a far walk from the Teramachi shopping arcade. The room was larger than most other double rooms I've stayed at in Japan. Free internet in the room was useful. The decoration was dated, and the bed was a little bit hard and springy -- not like the very soft mattresses that many places now use. Unfortunately the lobby smells like an ashtray because they allow smoking in the lobby, but I never stayed in the lobby more than 2 minutes so it wasn't a big problem. Overall, it was a good deal with a location convenient for the subway, but not right in the action.

You can't beat the location in terms of access to things outside of Kyoto. Even for the city itself, it is not bad, but there could be nicer parts of town to stay in. Still, it was the nicest we could afford and didn't leave us wanting. The Superior King room had a good view, was spacious, and had one of the best beds I ever slept in. Excellent staff, and we ordered expensive but delicious room service breakfast once. A fun experience. I would definitely consider the Granvia again.

great location for travel

The Apa Horikawadori hotel is located just about 3 blocks from Kyoto Station, therefore was great for the many day trips that we had planned on our vacation. This was our second stay at the hotel; the desk staff now speak English fairly well. The rooms are simple and small, but clean and comfortable. Non-smoking rooms available. The best for us was the breakfast buffet that included lots of choices, with many vegetarian choices (one has to be adventurous and eat the Japanese-style food, but it's delicious). The buffet wasn't free, but reasonably priced. We'll stay there again on our next trip to Kyoto.

Location: close to Kyoto station on the north side. A little hard to find but certainly cloase. Make sure you have a good map of the location. A sister APA is a block away from this, so they had a map in there to find this one. Amenities: OK, the bathrooms are clasic Japanese and small, but everything is there. You aren't there to stay in the room. Cleanliness- good. Comfort- cramped and a I had a view of the wall, but I only slept in the room. Comfort- bed, sheets and pillows better than average. Staff- ok, no issues. Value: very good primarily due to location and cleanliness. Took Subway everyday and couldnot have done much better for a balance of value and location. Would recommend it you are spending most of your time out of the hotel. Warning: small rooms, so don't try and cram too much luggage in there...had barely enough room to open 1 suitcase. Savings opportunity: Get a 1 day pass at the Kyoto station for 600 yen...you can travel the subway limitlessly for that day. Note: Starbucks in the Kyoto station underground at the PORTA.

the location on gojo avenue is excellent. it is not far from kyoto (train) station, and hence it is not too expensive to go to/from the station. gojo is a large street, but is not too crowded with tourists, so getting a taxi should not be a big problem. shijo avenue is right in the center of the action. but the down side of shijo is that it is too busy with tourists. hence, gojo (where the aranvert is located) is a better place to stay. gojo is only a short walk from shijo. the common hot tub is excellent. however, management should be encouraged to post signs making it clear that bathers should completely clean themselves BEFORE entering the tub. it is customary and EXPECTED that bathers will wash and rinse prior to getting in the tub. those who know how to use a japanese bath are grossed out by the foreigners who jump into the tub as soon as they get there. WASH AND RINSE FIRST. i would rate the place a "5" if it had in-house internet access. as it is, there is an internet cafe just down the street on gojo avenue. there are so many excellent restaurants in the area, that it would probably be wise to take in the traditional kyoto food. after all, kyoto was the imperial capital for a thousand years.

Description
Simple, quaint hotel provides touch of old JapanLocated in the center of Kyoto, the Ryokan Hirashin offers guests a chance to explore traditional Japanese accommodations with modern touches. Done in traditional "ryokan" style, the property features tatami-floored rooms, traditional Japanese robes and a feeling of tranquility and scale often lost in larger properties. Still, Ryokan Hirashin features important modern aspects, including free Internet access in the lobby, public baths and a banquet hall. The location is also ideal for exploring the numerous shops, restaurants and museums in the area. Highlights Traditional Japanese accommodationsIn-room dinner service (fees apply)Public bath Banquet hall for large meetings RoomsThere are 27 rooms at the Ryokan Hirashin, each designed in the traditional manner of inns used by travelers in the ancient days with modern touches. All rooms have televisions, refrigerators and air conditioning. Bathrooms are en suite and feature shower/tub combinations. Slippers and yukatas (bathrobes) are provided, and some yukatas may be purchased in order to stroll around the city in a truly traditional manner. Features The Ryokan Hirashin is an extension of the traditional Japanese inn that originated during the 17th century, when inns served travelers along the roadways of Japan. They typically feature tatami floors, communal baths and other public areas where visitors may wear yukata and talk with the owner.   Kyoto has become known as one of the few places in modern Japan where ryokan are found. The Ryokan Hirashin offers dinner and breakfast in its accommodation options, and the meals consists of traditional cuisine known as kaiseki, which features seasonal and regional specialties. The hotel changes its menu depending on the season. Kaiseki refers to a meal consisting of a number of small, varied dishes.   In addition, the hotel features a large public bath complimentary to guests. Men and women have different bathing rooms. It is located a short walk to the interesting Nishiki Market. Two convenient shops are also around the corners. Bus stops are found at nearby Sijo, which is the main street of kyoto. A day bus ticket is recommended for unlimited rides, taking you to most of the tourist sites within the city. We recommend this Ryokan. But one must be reminded that this is not a traditional Ryokan, rather it is a city ryokan. Still worth experiencing.

Description
Japanese inn or modern hotel? Guests get to decide In the heart of Kyoto, steps from a subway station and minutes from dining and entertainment options, the Village Kyoto offers an intriguing twist on the traditional vs. modern hotel debate. Rooms are designed with traditional Japanese tatami flooring and sofa beds with optional mattresses and Japanese futon bedding, allowing guests to enjoy the space in their own way. The Village Kyoto offers a complimentary bento breakfast, communal baths for men and women, business services and fixed-room rates, making it ideal for families and large groups. Highlights Excellent location near Kyoto TowerNew property with flexible room designComplimentary bento breakfastBusiness services available Location The Village Kyoto is located near the unique Costume Museum, a must-see for those interested in exploring the history of Japan in miniature. Since 1974, the museum has exhibited dolls dressed in the varied and beautiful garments worn throughout the history of Japan. Rooms The guest rooms at the Village Kyoto are decorated in a stylish fusion of traditional comfort and sleek modernity, featuring Japanese tatami flooring and sofa beds. In this configuration, guests can relax in a more open, inn-style space. However, the property also features optional mattresses and Japanese futon bedding, allowing for a "normal" hotel experience. Rooms feature large LCD televisions, microwaves, refrigerators and bidet toilets. Guests also receive traditional "samue" sleepwear -- loose-fitting kimono-style tops and trousers. Complimentary wired Internet access is available. Features While the Village Kyoto does not have an on-site restaurant, it does offer guests a complimentary bento (boxed) breakfast each morning that is delivered to the room. Guests can choose between three bento options: Japanese, Western and sushi. The property also features spacious, separate communal baths for men and women, a traditional Japanese staple used for relaxation. The welcome and local knowledge provided by Hiro was superb. The experience was great. As well as the convenience store across the road there is also a larger local shop around the corner and with a little exploring many other shops. Would definitely stay again and would recommend for longer stays. The Tofukugi shrines in the area are also worth visiting.Close to the road but traffic is quiet during sleep periods and did not present a problem. PS with The JR Pass the one stop from Kyoto Central is no problem.

Excellent hotel, très moderne

  • Anonymous
  • Oct 5, 2010

I recently stayed in Brighton for my business trip. I just loved everything about the hotel, not to say how clean and specious the room was (especially for the Japanese standard!), friendliness and helpfulness of the hotel staff was beyond my expectations. The only downsize was that the hotel is far from the downtown area where action happens. There is a hotel shuttle that you can take to the business district, however, and you can find many restaurants there. I will definitely stay there again!

Reception staff patchy in quality

Reception staff patchy in quality of service provided - some are truly outstanding while others clearly require more training. Shuttle bus service from hotel to and from Kyoto Station, and willingness to drop passengers off at locations along the way is very helpful. Internet cafe was out of order, which was a bit disappointing, though free internet connection is available in room. I'd recommend this hotel overall.
